The Hundred Sheltering Years...
100 year old Club Building at Mazgaon in Mumbai
St. Joseph’s Club (Belman) Y P O C Mazagoan, Mumbai E L P Accommodation) M (Male Catholic A S Preface In early 20th Century, many Manglorean Christians started migrating to Bombay in search of daily livelihood to support their families back home. Most of them were very low scale workers, taxi drivers, domestic and bakery workers. Accommodation was the biggest challenge faced by them as they could not afford
better accommodation due to their low income. Some of them had to even sleep on Bombay footpaths. During those days some visionary men came together and started ‘Kudam’ (Clubs/ Associations) to support low income brethren. Today, there are more than 40 such typical clubs/ kudam exists in Mumbai mainly belonging to Mangalorean Catholics.
History of St. Josephs’ Club, Mazgaon, Mumbai Our Club was started by the enthusiastic, visionary and foresighted youths of Belman Parish in Mangalore Diocese (now Udupi Diocese). The founder of the club is Late Sebastian Lobo and Marcel Martis. Along with them, 10 other youths of Belman and surrounding areas joined them. They hired 131.35 sqm room on monthly rental basis on 1st July, 1914. They dedicated the club to St. Joseph in honor to their native Church Patron Saint. The Club can accommodate maximum forty members at any point and it provides Kitchen and other basic facilities. The main objective of this club is to provide decent, comfortable stay with minimum fees to the young catholic males hailing from Mangalore/ Udupi Diocese. The association was registered as “St. Joseph’s club” under societies Registration Act, XXI of 1860, mainly due to the efforts of Late Leo D’souza. In the year 1978, it was registered under Bombay public trust act 1950 in leadership of Jerome D’souza. The association is being administered honorably by the members themselves. During these periods, many leaders selflessly served for the developments of Club. They are still remembered as Pillars of Club, mainly Louis Goveas, Jerome D’souza, Manual Lobo and Apoline Martis. Last twenty five years, Robert D’souza, Palimar is serving as president along with the other core committee members. The Club celebrated its Golden Jubilee in the year 1964 and Platinum Jubilee in the year 1989 in club premises. In 1966, it was a shocking news to the club management and members that the Landlord of Building had sent legal notice to vacate the premises and filed case at civil court. The case hearing went on for years and finally in 1974 club won the case in the court. Later original landlord sold his property to new landlord. After 15 years, again in the year 1989 second landlord filed case against club in Bombay High Court. This time too, the verdict came in favor of club on 21.12.1999. The members of club rejoiced and celebrated their victory on 30.05.2000 with
