SHOPPING at HualĀlai
F
rom haute couture and ball caps, diamonds and sneakers, golf clubs and shades to some of the world’s finest wines, Hualālai Resort offers all of this and more for the most discriminating buyer. With seven retail outlets scattered throughout the heart of the Resort, Hualālai also brings some of Hawai`i Island’s most respected artists and local boutique farmers directly to Members and guests. Nearly daily, these artisans set up shop on the broad, shaded lanai at the centrally located Trading Company. This general store is the place to fuel your vehicle, and your body and soul, not to mention a great place to buy those last minute gifts for family and friends back home! Island-made specialties are showcased, including sinfully-delicious Hawai`i-grown chocolates, honey, macadamia nuts and tropical preserves; and sensational lotions and fragrances naturally cultivated from a variety of local florals, herbs, spices, woods and nuts. An assortment of gourmet salads, sandwiches and sushi also are available for those on the go, along with a selection of beverages (including the aforementioned fine wines). A large section of the store stocks Resort logo wear – rash guards and tees among the most popular – including the highfashion, high performance board shorts worn by our Alaka`i Nalu (masters of the waves) who manage Hualālai’s comprehensive ocean sports program. Just next door, the casually elegant Seaside Beach boutique offers up must-have resort garb for both men and women, along

with all the stylish and hip accessories to polish the look (hats, totes, every-day-wear fine jewelry, sandals and shoes). This is the place to find much sought-after designer lines reflecting a relaxed, low maintenance, beach lifestyle – James Perse, Solid & Striped, Lady and the Sailor, LeTarte and Helen Kaminski among them. The adjacent Hualālai Sports Club & Hualālai Spa shares a small portion of the boutique’s space with a collection of facial and body lotions – many of the same exceptional quality products used by the skin and body treatment professionals at the spa. A selection of yoga and fitness wear for men and women (including the widely popular and comfortable Lululemon) is also on offer here. In the meantime, the nearby Hualālai Tennis Club serves up a broad selection of ultimate performance, high-fashion clothing and shoes specifically designed for the courts, including DNA Athletic that is quickly becoming a favorite among professionals on the ATP and WTA tours. An exclusive to Hualālai Resort, the Tennis Club is the only outlet in the state where you are able to score this brand! Top end racquets, shoes and accessories round out the shop’s offerings. With two award-winning golf courses on-property, it’s no surprise the Club Shop (overlooking the 18th hole of the Jack Nicklaus-designed Hualālai Course and situated just below the Hualālai Grille) offers one of Hawai`i Island’s most comprehensive collections of luxury brand golf attire, equipment and accessories. Beautiful Jewels by Mish! An Annual Exclusive at Hualālai Resort
O
ne of the most anticipated events of the year at Hualālai Resort is the multi-day trunk show by famed fine jewelry designer Mish Tworkowski, better known simply as Mish. Hardly one of those one-name celebrities basking in their own glow, Mish is as humble and charming as his pieces are drop-dead gorgeous! In fact, he confides that if he weren’t designing some of the world’s most cherished collectibles, he would most surely be a gardener! No surprise, really, since his inspiration has always been the beauty found in nature – a simple twig, exotic florals, exquisite underwater flora and corals. In December 2013, he hosted his fourth consecutive – and entirely exclusive – trunk show for homeowners and guests at Hualālai Resort. Mish debuted some of his most recent collections with many of the showcase pieces selected with a relaxed, resort lifestyle in mind – pieces that are just as stunning worn with a t-shirt and jeans as they are with gowns on the red carpet at galas worldwide. “Today people have a much more casual lifestyle and prefer to purchase something unique and beautiful that 7

they can wear every day,” he says. Mish’s iconic, often whimsical designs most frequently appear in 18K gold adorned with vibrantly colored precious and semi-precious stones, including diamonds in every hue, sumptuous South Sea pearls and coral. A native New Yorker, Mish says, “We absolutely fell in love with Hualālai during our first vacation here 12 years ago. We’ve returned every year and as soon as we arrive, it’s as if we are breathing a different air!” From the very first show, he says, the resort owners and specifically the owners/operators of Seaside Luxe and Seaside Beach (the two haute retail outlets on-property) made it extremely clear that they only wanted very special pieces presented – pieces that couldn’t be found anywhere else in the world. Since then the collection is offered only once a year in Hawai`i and in only one location – Hualālai Resort! Otherwise, Mish's fine jewelry is available to his worldwide clientele at his breathtaking, gallery like studio on Bond Street in New York City. www.mishnewyork.com

hile nearly 200 recreational activities are offered for Hualālai Resort keiki (children generally ages 5 to 8) and Junior Members (9 to 17) – including clinics and private lessons to perfect a stroke on the golf course or a forehand volley on the tennis court – exploration, education and volunteer opportunities, many unique to island life in Hawai`i, also are featured on a year round basis. “Appreciation and respect for the ocean are the key takeaways in our Junior Alaka`i Nalu and Ocean Life Explorers programs,” says Trent Fischer, who heads up the Alaka`i Nalu ocean sports department at the Resort. “Ocean and shoreline safety is always our highest priority and our traditional Hawaiian water sports 8

and shoreline exploration adventures complement that mission.” The three-day Junior Alaka`i Nalu program is designed for teens 13 to 17 years of age and is focused on developing knowledge and skills needed to be stewards of the ocean – conservation and sustainability advocates—while also providing an opportunity to sample traditional Hawaiian water sports such as six-man canoe paddling, stand up paddling and more. Keiki, tweens and teens, Fischer says, may also become Ocean Life Explorers by participating in shoreline-based activities, discovering the multitude of marine life that thrives in tide pools lining the Resort’s coastline and collecting tiny fish and organisms from the team’s educational touch tank. The homesites are positioned to capture wonderful golf course and ocean views surrounded by vistas of Hawai`i’s stunning mountains including Haleakalā on Maui. Buildings feature gently curved double pitched wood shingled roofs with deep overhangs shading walls and generously sized door and window openings. Large lānai link the inside of the house to the outside and are oriented toward ocean and golf course views. One of the most popular family adventures, Fischer says, is exploring the Kona-Kohala coast by canoe or speedy Ribcraft. In addition to exhilarating fun on the ocean, the guided tours feature talks about the natural and ancient Hawaiian history in this region. Spinner dolphins are often spotted, while, during the winter months, Humpback whales put on a show along with their newborn calves, sparking discussion about these amazing marine mammals. Meanwhile, the Resort’s Natural Resources management team, led by David Chai, provides even more in-depth exploration of the ocean and its creatures, focusing on protection, sustainability and enhancement of the fragile marine environment, including the eight restored anchialine fish ponds found on property. As part of its commitment to awareness and education, the Natural Resources Department hosts a Junior Marine Biologist program for children 12 years and up – it’s especially recommended for aspiring marine scientists! A maximum of four participants spend half a day with one of the staff marine biologists learning such things as how to collect and record data about Hawai`i’s unique underwater world. Chai and his team are also active in rehabilitating sick and injured marine life in the ponds’ brackish waters, including sharks and rays of all sizes. When in-residence, up-close and personal shark adventures are offered to kids 6-14 years of age, adventures that include shark feedings! A true learning adventure, the resort’s marine biologists teach the biology, behavior and cultural significance of sharks in Hawai`i during this exciting and engaging program. Continued on next page

If so, Hualālai Resort’s Ka`ūpūlehu Cultural Center, managed by Earl Regidor (Uncle Earl) offers a lengthy roster of hands-on workshops and demonstrations to intrigue the most curious and artistic keiki – from traditional Hawaiian song and dance, lauhala weaving and lei-making to an immersion into the Hawaiian language and history. “Perhaps the most lasting and important thing our kupuna (elders) share with our Members – keiki and adult alike – is the art of genuine ho`okipa (hospitality) one of many cherished values in our Hawaiian culture,” Regidor says. The Four Seasons Resort Hualālai hosts many of the daily keiki activities here as part of its Kids for All Seasons program – one of the many complimentary benefits that are part of living at Hualālai. Whatever your child’s interest and/or aptitude, all of these programs are about building confidence and learning new skills or testing existing ones while home at Hualālai! And, in addition to receiving knowledge and skills, there’s also a chance for keiki to give back to the Hualālai community. The Junior `Ohana Foundation Board puts together fundraising activities throughout the year, offering meaningful volunteer opportunities for all keiki and Junior Members. Junior Advisory Board
Hualälai ‘Ohana Foundation Me ke aloha, kōkua aku kōkua mai: Pela iho la ka nohona `ohana. With love, help others, be helped: Such is a family relationship.
In 2002, the Hualālai `Ohana Foundation (HOF) was established as a nonprofit vehicle for Hualālai Residents to contribute to the well-being of the community’s most valuable asset: its employees. The Foundation’s tradition of giving is two-fold: to offset the high costs of both education and medical care for Hualālai employees and their immediate families. Since 2002, HOF has distributed medical and educational grants to hundreds of individuals and their families and, while 2013 numbers are still being calculated, it is estimated that nearly $800,000 will have been raised last year to support its goals. And, a substantial sum was contributed to that total through the fundraising efforts of the Junior Advisory Board comprised of Hualālai Homeowners’ children. What started as a simple, one-day cart wash put together by a few Junior Members to benefit HOF in 2007, has grown to include a handful of annual special events and a full-scale, recycling program for Hualālai’s residential neighborhoods. Junior Board President Alana Dreimann, one of the founding members, promises more exciting programs and events in 2014. So far, the Junior Board efforts have netted nearly $150,000 for the Foundation in just six years.
“The representatives of the Junior Board of the HOF work together to improve the lives of the employees of Hualälai and their families through education and healthcare programs. Our mission is to raise funds for the HOF and raise awareness for issues close to our generation.” Junior Board Mission Statement “It’s been a real inspiration to watch the youth of Hualālai take such strong initiative, to embrace a shared sense of responsibility and purpose in contributing, giving back to this community they love so much,” Michael Bonahan, immediatepast president and current HOF Board Member, says. “They really get – or are learning quickly – that true fulfillment comes from a life of service.” Additionally, the Junior Board strives to support the efforts of the Foundation; to provide the Board with a different perspective; to learn the importance of philanthropy; and gain professional development skills, which will benefit them in the future. LAVA POTS HAWAI`I HŌlualoa artist Mark Kimball has been creating his iconic Lava Pots for 25 years. Inspired by the natural beauty of weathered lava, he developed a composite lava-like material that requires no firing, is waterproof and contains enough plastic to be formed on a potter’s wheel. This large Lava Vase with weathered neck is more than five feet tall (62 inches) and 44 inches wide. It’s shown here in a classic shade of Hawaiian basalt, Pakala Ash. Kimball’s Lava Pots are available in a wide range of styles, colors and finishes. $3,500. www.lavapotshawaii.com THOMPSON ART STUDIOS, INC. TOM PICO For more than 20 years, Tom Pico has been turning out some of the most sought after wood carvings in the state. It’s complemented by the soffit that borders the room; slightly different in color, Pico created it using Honduran Mahogany. Price determined per project specifications. (808) 985-9180 www.tompico.me

ALEX GUPTON Alex Gupton’s colorful, often whimsical Italian glass pool mosaics are easily recognizable throughout the islands. A resident of Hawai‘i Island, Gupton is a fine artist working in pen & ink and acrylic, however, a decade ago the beauty and colors of fine Italian glass grabbed his attention and mosaics entered his world! Pictured here is his mosaic capturing the movements of 35 Koi fish – all renditions of the actual Koi that once occupied this expansive water feature. A 50-feetlong by 15-feet-wide pond that is only three feet deep. “Great for the grand kids to splash around in while petting the fish,” Gupton says.
