From Research, the Power to Cure
Founded on a Culture of Innovation
The La Jolla location has grown from a single building to an extensive campus.
Our founders, Dr. William and Lillian Fishman, showed tremendous foresight when they chose to locate their new cancer research institution on the Torrey Pines Mesa in the La Jolla neighborhood of San Diego. Today, the area is one of the most vibrant biomedical research hubs in the country and Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute lies at its heart. The Fishmans started with an innovative approach to cancer research and provided scientists with the freedom to explore new ideas. Since then the Institute has grown tremendously, both physically and in terms of its impact.
With cancer expertise as our genesis and a passion to improve human health, we have developed robust research programs that touch on many conditions. Today, we have campuses in California and Florida that include five research centers: • National Cancer Institutedesignated Cancer Center • Del E. Webb Neuroscience, Aging and Stem Cell Research Center • Infectious and Inflammatory Disease Center • Sanford Children’s Health Research Center • Diabetes and Obesity Research Center
From Coast to Coast, Every Dollar Counts The names of our donors grace matching recognition walls in San Diego and Orlando, serving as inspiration to the researchers who pass by them each day.
THIS EDITION OF PORTAL IS A SPECIAL INVITATION TO GROW WITH US. Step through the door and have a look inside the Institute’s two locations. If you are interested in anything you see here and want to be part of our progress, there are many ways to take that next step. Please turn to the back cover for more information.

Private investment in health science is critical to our continued success. As we look to the future, we will continue to support young people because they are tomorrow’s scientists and doctors. We provide opportunities for them through community outreach, internships, our own graduate program, and positions for postdoctoral researchers. Contributions play an important part in all that we do. They help launch careers, provide funds when grants fall short due to NIH cutbacks, and help recruit and retain the most innovative scientists. Sanford-Burnham appreciates your support and is well positioned to make optimal use of all resources. Stay in touch with us and see what the future holds!
Our groundbreaking medical research is the foundation upon which cures are based. We are committed to increasing the speed and efficiency with which our laboratory discoveries are translated into clinical benefits for those suffering from disease. We understand the urgency of our mission; we know lives are at stake and time is often short for those in need. Our collaborations with pharmaceutical partners such as Takeda, Pfizer, and Johnson & Johnson capitalize on our expertise in fundamental science to help translate discoveries made in our labs into tangible benefits for patients. We are also increasing our involvement with
clinical partners. One shining example: The Florida Hospital–SanfordBurnham Translational Research Institute for Metabolism and Diabetes (TRI) recently opened its new facility in Orlando. The first of many investigations will soon move from our laboratories to human studies at the TRI. The Institute has also invested in state-of-
the-art technology that positions our researchers at the leading edge of personalized medicine. Through faster genome sequencing, biomarker identification, and individualized disease profiles, researchers at Sanford-Burnham are transforming health care as we know it.
This group of scientific interns represent the researchers who will make the discoveries of tomorrow.
