“Kristen got me back to 100 percent,” Tate said. “Every week, I found myself being able to move it a little further until I could do everything I did before.” Her experience was so positive Tate is working with Schulz again for a completely different issue. In June, she was in a car accident and has since struggled with whiplash and recurring headaches.

The gift of health and healing, close to home Connie Tate with Kristen Schulz, physical therapist.

For Connie Tate, having quality medical care close to her rural home is priceless. Tate lives in Hunter, N.D., and with just a 15-minute drive, she can conveniently receive life-changing treatment at Sanford Hillsboro. “Having medical care in our community is the most important thing,” Tate said. “When you can have it in a little hometown like this, the personal connection you create with the staff is priceless.” Tate started physical therapy at Sanford two years ago after injuring her rotator cuff. She was playing with her grandchildren and heard something tear in her shoulder. The injury kept her from doing day-to-day tasks like getting dressed, pulling something out

of a cupboard and even reaching behind her back. Those little things became a big deal, and Tate knew it was time to get help. After surgery to repair the tear, Tate started working with Kristen Schulz, a physical therapist at Sanford Hillsboro. Physical therapists work in conjunction with physicians to provide individualized treatment plans that help patients reduce pain, regain mobility and strength and recover muscle and joint function–as quickly and as safely as possible–following surgery, injury or illness. That’s exactly what Schulz did for Tate during the several months they worked together. She taught her exercises and stretches to regain mobility and maintain flexibility.

Through unique therapies like the Graston Technique and dry needling, that help reduce chronic pain and loosen injured muscles, Tate has seen some improvement. She plans to continue her physical therapy. “I trust Kristen,” Tate said. “She is always so friendly, professional and very caring. I just can’t say enough good things about her.” At Sanford Hillsboro, Tate said she receives excellent care from every doctor, therapist and caregiver she sees. “The quality of people working here is just exceptional and the programs are vital,” Tate said. “We just absolutely have to keep that in these smaller communities.” For Tate, having care available close to home has made the difference between seeking help and living in pain. “I probably would not have stuck with therapy if it meant traveling twice as far to Fargo,” Tate said. “With the expense of running to Fargo a couple times a week for therapy, I would give up sooner.” Donors like you help touch the lives of patients like Tate every day. Healing through music Donors bring new music therapy program to Sanford Hillsboro A new program at Sanford Hillsboro is using the power of music to enhance the health and well-being of long-term care residents.

activities including stretching and marching to different beats and encouraging residents to share memories associated with the songs.

Since October, Adaire Reinpold, a board-certified and state-licensed music therapist, has been leading the initiative, made possible by donors who have supported the Sanford Health Foundation Hillsboro’s spiritual care fund. Reinpold has become a favorite presence at Sanford, working with residents one-on-one and in group sessions.

Reinpold also coordinates Music and Memory programming, which fills iPods with personalized playlists for residents. She explains that listening to favorite songs is proven to decrease agitation and negative behaviors, in addition to accessing parts of the brain not lost to Alzheimer’s or dementia.

Depending on resident needs and abilities, a session may include creating, singing, moving to, and/or listening to music— interactive experiences that address social, cognitive, physical, emotional and spiritual goals. “I always use music that is familiar,” says Reinpold, who engages residents with favorites on her guitar or piano that range from western classics by Hank Williams to hymns like “Amazing Grace.” She leads

“Overall, the residents have responded very positively to the music, by singing along, dancing, playing instruments, and sharing memories with each other,” said Reinpold. “There’s just something about live music and music-making together that uplifts us and brings out the best in all of us. It is so rewarding for me to see these residents come to life, to hear their stories, and share in their lives.”
