Altering Our Course for a Better Tomorrow By Paul Hanson, President Sanford Health of Northern Minnesota
S
anford Health of Northern Minnesota is an emerging organization that is not afraid to challenge the traditional role of a “rural” hospital. We have accepted the added responsibility of regional provider as part of our elevated commitment to the residents of northern Minnesota. With Sanford Health behind our team of physicians and staff, we are willing and able to meet the challenges we face on a local, state and national level. We do so with the recognition that success is a moving target. Technology that is new, innovative and revolutionary today, may not meet the needs of our patients tomorrow. Balancing the introduction of cutting edge technology with financial stewardship to meet the expectations of our patients and physicians is a challenge that we embrace.
For Sanford Health of Northern Minnesota, the services we have identified as contributing most to sustainable growth include orthopedics and sports medicine, cardiovascular and cancer services. Our mission-driven services such as emergency and obstetrical care are still very much part of our base and investing in our staff and physicians is critical in our approach to enhancing the patient experience. During the next twelve months, Sanford will honor its promise of growth in Bemidji. Today, a new orthopedics and sports medicine clinic large enough to accommodate six providers is being built. A dedicated cardiovascular lab will be introduced in the “heart” of our hospital and will accommodate up to four medical providers and a projected 660 procedures during its first year of operation. Our introduction and implementation of

I
t is a year of celebration and recognition at Sanford Health: 2012 is the Year of the Nurse. The 2012 nursing award recipients are: The 2012 Innovation Award was awarded to Sanford Bemidji Medical Center 2nd floor nurses Sherry Russell, RN, Audrey Martin, RN, and Stacy Thistle, RN, for their work on TCAB (Transforming Care at the Bedside). The focus of TCAB is to improve clinical outcomes and quality of care. Together, they have led this initiative with the 2nd floor nursing staff and implemented significant changes around providing patient-centered care.
The 2012 Rising Star Award recognizes nurses in their first two years of practice. This award was presented to Megan Gross, RN, 3rd floor Sanford Bemidji Medical Center. Megan naturally connects with patients and their families. She is eager to learn and displays commitment not only to her personal growth, but that of others, believing there is always something new to learn.
Dr. Rod Will, Internal Medicine, Sanford Bemidji Main Clinic, received the 2012 Friend of Nursing Award. This award recognizes an individual who has helped the profession of nursing. Dr. Will role models trusting relationships in his interdisciplinary approach to patient care. He is affirming, accepting, encouraging and committed to the growth of nurses.
The 2012 Florence Nightingale Award recognizes nurses who, through strength of character, commitment and competence, contribute to the evolution of the nursing practice. Two individuals were lifted up with the 2012 Florence Nightingale Award, Mary Miller, LPN, Director of Regional Clinics and Clinical Informatics Operations, and Cheryl Rowlette, RN, Clinic Administration. Mary supervises clinics that spread from Walker to Kelliher. She is passionate and courageous, always wearing a smile for her co-workers and patients. Cheryl has the ability to see humor in any situation. She is a master of negotiation. A co-worker states, “Cheryl is the most memorable person in my life.”

Sanford Bemidji Hospitalist Program
Upon admission to Sanford Bemidji Medical Center, there’s an excellent chance you will be seen by a hospitalist. Many primary care physicians rely on hospitalists to care for their patients when they visit emergency rooms or are admitted to the hospital.
What is a hospitalist?
A hospitalist is a hospital-based physician who specializes in all aspects of a patient’s care, from the time of admission through discharge. Their time is devoted solely to caring for patients in the hospital. Hospitalists examine, evaluate, order tests, prescribe medications and follow the patients’ recovery process.
Can a hospitalist order x-rays and other tests?
Yes. Hospitalists manage and coordinate a patient’s entire hospitalization, including ordering diagnostic tests and establishing a treatment plan. Hospitalists are familiar with key departments and individuals within the hospital, allowing for prompt connections with other healthcare personnel and services.
Are hospitalists on call?
A hospitalist is in the hospital at all times so they are able to respond immediately to emergencies. The hospitalist’s availability also contributes to improved communication with family members for routine questions, post discharge planning and emergencies.
What about my regular doctor?
The hospitalist communicates with your primary physician. Your physician is notified of your hospitalization and information regarding your stay is sent to him or her at discharge. If you do not have a regular doctor, a hospitalist will discuss this with you during your stay and a plan for follow-up after discharge will be established.

thank all of our Foundation volunteers and
donors listed on the pages that follow to let them know how much their time and support is appreciated. Their generosity in the name of quality healthcare in our region creates a healing environment that will continue to make a difference in people’s lives. This personal commitment was incredibly valuable over the past year and has allowed us to reach our
goal for the Foundation’s digital mammography project. These contributions directly benefit many of our families, friends and neighbors to save lives in the fight against breast cancer. As we move forward, this commitment to care for one another will fuel a lifetime of care in our community…for we truly are Stronger Together!
Digital Mammography Each year in the U.S., more than 20,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer. Last year, Sanford Bemidji advanced the fight against this disease by installing new digital mammography systems in both the clinic and hospital. Generous gifts to the Foundation helped make this technology possible for our loved ones in the community.
A story of hope and healing
T
hroughout Patience Anderson’s life she has had health issues that have brought her from her home in Walker to Bemidji for medical care and services. In January of 2011, Patience went in for a routine mammogram which revealed cancer in her right breast. Over the course of six months, Patience received both radiation and chemotherapy treatments from Dr. John Bollinger and Dr. Homayoon Shahidi at Sanford Bemidji. After the completion of her cancer treatment, Patience and her husband, Roger, planned a trip to Mexico to celebrate. Prior to leaving on vacation, Patience scheduled her follow-up mammogram hoping to receive a clean bill of health. Prior to her screening Sanford staff explained the new digital mammogram equipment. Patience drew both comfort and peace of mind knowing that the scans could be viewed immediately. She remembered what it was like waiting to find out what her results were the year prior and how agonizing it was “not knowing.” This time things were different – within an hour, the test came back. The scan on her right breast, the one they had found cancer in a year ago, looked good - but they were detecting some abnormalities in her other breast. As you can imagine, it is hard for anyone to find out that they might have breast cancer. But having

just finished cancer treatment - Patience was even more frightened. Her stress and worry were greatly relieved when Sanford was able to schedule her for a diagnostic digital mammogram at the hospital immediately. Within an hour she received the results – it wasn’t cancer. Patience had tears of joy that filled her at that moment. She was grateful for the compassion and comfort she found in the staff and physicians at Sanford. “I have always had good things to say about Sanford Bemidji – I can’t say I’ve always wanted to be there, but I’ve always had an outstanding experience. I’ve been treated by excellent physicians close to home and been given comfort by staff who have seen me through some of the hardest battles of my life,” said Patience.
Sanford Health Foundation of Northern Minnesota Volunteer Committees The Sanford Health Foundation of Northern Minnesota is proud to recognize these amazing individuals who give freely of their time and talents. Because of their service, the Foundation enjoys continued success in fulfilling its mission to support and promote healthcare services for our local community.

Tools and tips to leave a lasting legacy
Potential Benefits of Planned Gifts
T
he term “planned giving” refers to charitable gifts that require some planning before they are made to your favorite charity. Planned gifts are popular because there are many tools and techniques that can provide valuable benefits. To make this happen, a team of your attorney, accountant and financial planner can give you options that best meet your individual needs. The following are the basics to get you started.
Will
• Increase current income for you or others
Bequests in a will are the most popular type of planned gift. Bequests reduce the size of your taxable estate while helping your favorite charity. You can leave a specific dollar amount, piece of property or a percentage of your estate after making provisions for family and friends.
• Reduce income tax
Stocks and publicly traded securities are easy to give and offer great tax advantages. You can transfer the stock to your charity electronically through your broker or gift a signed stock certificate.
• Avoid capital gains tax • Pass assets to family at a reduced tax cost • Make significant donations to charity
Securities
Tangible Personal Property
Perhaps you own certain pieces of art, antiques or other collectibles of value that you might be willing to contribute. Many items of tangible personal property make suitable charitable gifts. Consult the charitable organization in advance of making this type of gift to be sure it can be accepted.
Real Estate
If you’ve owned your home or other real estate for a long time, no doubt it has increased in value significantly. What happens if you sell the property? The property’s appreciation is subject to capital gains tax upon completion of the sale. Before you sell your real estate, you might want to consider different options such as donating your property outright, placing it in a trust, retaining the use of it for life with it going to charity after or give it by will. All of these methods will enable you to enjoy personal financial benefits while supporting charity in a meaningful way.
Life Insurance
When you first bought a life insurance policy you had a purpose in mind—probably to help ensure the financial stability of your family should something happen to you or your spouse. Have your circumstances changed since then? Do you have life insurance policies that are no longer needed? You may either donate the life insurance policy or simply name a charity as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy.
Retirement Plan Assets
Retirement accounts are often exposed to income taxes and estate taxes at a combined marginal rate that could rise to 65 percent or even higher on large taxable estates. Yet many of these taxes can be avoided or reduced through a carefully planned charitable gift.
Gifts that Give Back to You
There are several ways you can make an important future gift to charity while retaining, or in many cases increasing, the income you receive from the asset used to make the gift. For example, a Charitable Gift Annuity is a simple instrument that pays you an annuity for your lifetime, and that of another individual if desired, based upon your age(s) at the time of your gift. The remainder of the annuity then goes to the charity upon death. There are many types of charitable annuities so be sure to talk to your professional advisor about the best one for you.

Honoring a Labor of Love
A
s a nurse at the hospital, Mimi Diffley loved working in healthcare. She thoroughly enjoyed caring for patients as well as her cherished close friendships with colleagues at work. Sadly, her career was cut short when she lost her battle with breast cancer in 2007. After Mimi’s death, the Diffley family partnered with the Sanford Health Foundation of Northern Minnesota to establish an employee scholarship endowment fund. Throughout her working years, Mimi juggled family, going back to school and working. It was important for the family to establish the fund to both provide scholarships to Sanford employees, like Mimi, who seek to further their career in healthcare and to honor her in a way that would be a lasting tribute. Since its start, seventeen employees have received scholarships from this wonderful opportunity established by the Diffley family. Family gifts and donations from current employees continue to help the fund grow so even more and more employees can benefit in the future. Congratulations go to four employees who were awarded scholarships this year: Tiffanie Dugstad, Elizabeth Johnson, Elizabeth Engum and Kari Josefson. For more information about this special fund, contact the Foundation office at (218) 333-5515.
