Sanford Bemidji Expands Surgical Options With Robotics
By Paul Hanson, President Sanford Health of Northern Minnesota
Healthcare
providers have an awesome responsibility; their job is life. It is a privilege to work among people who have dedicated themselves to this extraordinary mission. For nearly four years, I have had the honor of being part of the exceptional team of healthcare providers and support staff at Sanford Health of Northern Minnesota. Together, we set goals and achieved dreams. We overcame obstacles and engineered success. One of our greatest accomplishments was becoming a regional provider, offering new clinical services while balancing the financial commitments that often accompany growth. This was an ambitious goal that required a collaborative commitment
from our Board of Directors, physicians, and employees. To become a recognized regional provider, we needed to have a deeper operational relationship with our medical staff. We needed to invest in our employees’ professional development. We needed to recruit additional specialists to our community. We needed to invest in capital equipment and information technology. We needed to find the right partner to coordinate our integration efforts. Together, we did. Sanford Health helped us achieve integration and elevate our organization to regional provider status; a
transformation which enables us to provide better care to a greater number of people. Cardiology, orthopedics, and primary medicine have been our recent focus. The introduction or enhancement of these services have propelled us into thinking bigger. The next phase will be cancer and women’s services. When I leave this organization next month, I do so with the knowledge that Sanford Health of Northern Minnesota is in capable hands led by compassionate hearts. We have accomplished much together, and I appreciate the support and guidance you have given me. I look forward to seeing what you achieve next.
Sanford is embarking on exciting times! On June 2 we will be converting to a new Electronic Medical Record which will revolutionize patient care throughout the entire health system. Please be advised you may initially have longer than normal wait time. We thank you for your patience.
How will the new electronic medical record benefit you? • One secure patient record throughout Sanford • A unified patient bill • Streamlined communication between your health care team • And much, much more...

shley Jensen is a first-time mom with a new baby. When she started having pain last summer, Ashley suspected gallbladder problems because she’d had some symptoms prior to pregnancy. A CT scan confirmed the presence of gallstones. With a new baby, Ashley didn’t have time for an extended hospitalization or lengthy recuperation. Fortunately for this new mom, Sanford Bemidji had recently added da Vinci ® Surgical System, a minimally invasive surgical robot that is even more precise than laparoscopic procedures. “The new da Vinci ® robot allows us to provide cutting edge care to patients right here in Bemidji,” says Dr. Benjamin Roy, who performed Ashley’s surgery. The da Vinci ® system offers advanced surgical technology. For instance, its “robotic arms” serve various purposes; one arm holds an endoscopic camera that gives the surgeon a multi-dimensional view inside the body while the other arms hold instruments. Because the surgeon directs the system’s arms, jointed hands and use of micro instruments inside the body, possible human problems such as hand Benjamin Roy, MD, performed da Vinci robotic surgery on Ashley Jensen’s gall bladder following the birth of her first child. tremors are eliminated. In addition to knowing that surgery is being performed in the most optimal environment available in today’s medical field, patients experience all the benefits associated with minimally invasive procedures: less pain, less blood loss, shorter hospital stays and faster recuperation. ®
Ashley was admitted at Sanford Bemidji Medical Center at about 8 a.m. in the morning and went home the same afternoon. Not that long ago, gallbladder surgery required an extended hospital stay and four to six weeks of seriously limited activity to fully recover. “It’s pretty amazing what they can do now,” Ashley said. “Being a nurse, I had done my own research, but they explained everything to me too. I was fairly comfortable almost immediately after surgery and healed very well. I was back to normal within two weeks. I’d certainly recommend it for anyone who needs surgery.” The da Vinci ® system is used for a variety of surgical procedures. Reflux surgeries and hysterectomies will be added next to the growing list of da Vinci ® surgeries available at Sanford Bemidji.

Sanford Bemidji Travel Medicine Gifts and souvenirs are important to the travel experience. The best gift, though, is feeling good while vacationing. Making an appointment with Sanford Health’s Travel Medicine Clinic before an overseas vacation can help travelers stay healthy during their trip. Nurses at the Travel Medicine Clinic do a comprehensive analysis of individual travel plans, and equip travelers with knowledge and medications that can be very handy if they fall prey to maladies common to the area where they are traveling. “We tell travelers what diseases are possible and what vaccines are recommended for where they are going,” said infectious disease specialist Dr. Mateen Rahman, who reviews all travel itineraries. “We give them medications to take along that can help with possible problems.” Ideally, appointments with the Travel Medicine Clinic should be made three months in advance. The TMC is located at the Sanford Main Clinic. To make an appointment, call (218) 333-5000.

When Jim Ritchie’s "Widow Maker" Called, Sanford Bemidji Answered
Inpatient Kidney Dialysis Keeps Patients Close To Home
Why add inpatient kidney dialysis when Sanford Health has an excellent, long-standing outpatient Kidney Dialysis Center? There is one good reason, according to nephrologist Daniel Louvar, MD, “Patients benefit. It improves care, convenience and cost.”
With the addition of inpatient dialysis, hospital patients who need kidney dialysis receive treatment in their hospital room from nurses with specialized training in dialysis. Formerly, Fargo was the closest city with inpatient dialysis and inpatients were transferred to Fargo by air or ambulance. Kidney dialysis needs are increasing, partially because kidney failure is more likely as people age and the aging population continues to grow, Dr. Louvar said. Diabetes and hypertension are the primary causes for kidney failure, but there are many other problems that can contribute to it too. In healthy people, the kidneys naturally regulate body levels of water and minerals and remove waste. However, when kidneys are damaged or fail, they can’t complete these functions and kidney dialysis becomes the means of artificially processing and eliminating waste and excess water from the blood. Without dialysis, the waste products in the blood would continue to increase, leading to coma and death.

espite having had a heart attack 12 years ago, Jim Ritchie, 66, continued to run five to six miles a day to keep fit so he could snowmobile, ride motorcycle, bicycle, cross country ski, play softball and enjoy other outdoor activities. But last winter, the Bemidji resident’s strength, pace and stamina began to wane. He was always tired and out of breath. In February, he began to feel pain in his chest and up his left arm and shoulder. He drove himself to the emergency room at Sanford Bemidji Medical Center where the new Heart and Vascular Center had opened the previous month. On-site, specially trained physicians immediately began treating Ritchie for a heart attack. “The lady at the desk took one look at me and started hollering for people,” Ritchie said. Medical experts agree treatment for heart attacks should occur within 90 minutes of a patient entering the ER. That’s what happened for Ritchie. This time he didn’t have to travel and waste valuable minutes seeking treatment. When he had the heart attack in 2000, his treatment couldn’t begin until he was transported by ambulance 133 miles to Fargo. In the new Sanford Bemidji Heart and Vascular Center, doctors inserted two stents. Ritchie later learned that his left anterior coronary artery, the "widow maker," was 95 percent blocked. Only 20 percent of people live after this type of health scare.
Dr. Louvar joined Sanford Bemidji full time last summer. He was already very familiar with the Bemidji system, having served as Director of the Outpatient Kidney Center for the last three years from Fargo where he lived then.
Jim Ritchie visits the Sanford Bemidji Cardiac Cath Lab where Jeffrey Watkins, MD, performed life-saving cardiac surgery.
“I was lucky when I got in,” Ritchie said, adding that the physicians, nurses and staff at Sanford Bemidji Medical Center were responsive, knowledgeable and compassionate. “They treated me very well.”
“I think there’s an added advantage in being in Bemidji full time and being more familiar with the hospital itself and the patients,” Dr. Louvar commented. “I enjoy being able to grow the nephrology services and being a part of this community. The new inpatient dialysis service complements other hospital services and fits with our commitment to grow as a regional medical center. ”
Good cardiac care isn’t something that can wait. The Heart and Vascular Center is the region’s only heart and vascular center with a cardiology clinic, cardiac catheterization lab and preparatory and recovery areas for both vascular and cardiac patients. Donors helped make the new center a reality, equipping it with the most advanced technologies available, so that a specially trained health care team could save lives and hearts like Jim Ritchie’s.
In addition to dialysis, Dr. Louvar has expertise in hypertension, kidney transplants and the diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases. He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine: Nephrology.
Daniel Louvar, MD, checks on the dialysis machine while it goes through its cleaning process. Dr. Watkins performs a cardiac cath procedure at Sanford Bemidji.

Infectious Disease Specialist at Sanford Bemidji
With the addition of Mateen Rahman, MD, as a full-time infectious disease specialist, Sanford Bemidji has improved quality care and convenience for inpatients and outpatients. Hospital patients who develop serious complications, such as infectious pneumonia or heart valve infections, no longer need to be flown or transported elsewhere. Area people living with chronic infectious diseases like AIDS and hepatitis no longer must travel to Fargo for outpatient care or wait for a visiting specialist appointment. “Some infectious diseases can be life-threatening so with my presence here, hospital patients get treatment faster,” said Dr. Rahman, who completed an infectious disease fellowship last summer and then met certification criteria established by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Cutting Edge Robotic Surgery
Anyone is susceptible to an infectious disease, which can spread from person to person or via bites by insects or animals. With summer approaching, tick-borne diseases are a concern. Dr. Rahman advises wearing protective clothing and examining the entire body daily. If a tick is present, remove it and clean the area well. “Usually, you will not get infection unless the tick has been stuck on the body for more than 36 hours,” he said. “But tick-born disease can be serious. A person can get multiple or co-infections from one tick bite. So it’s important to seek treatment if you react to a bite.” Sanford's Infectious Medicine Program is the only one in northwest Minnesota. Patients with chronic infectious diseases can schedule outpatient appointments with Dr. Rahman by calling Sanford Bemidji at (218) 333-5000.

volunteers and donors whose generous spirit has made lifesaving care possible in our community...You truly did a wonderful thing! Your personal commitment was incredibly helpful and allowed us to reach our goal. By partnering with the Foundation, you did not simply give to a building, piece of equipment or new technology…you made a commitment to care for your family, friends and neighbors.
Giving from the heart Dr. Benjamin Roy provided Joe and Janice Lueken a special look into the world of robotic surgery. The Luekens supported the purchase of the da Vinci ® robotic surgical system in Bemidji along with the new cardiology center through the Foundation's Together. For Life. project.

Joe and Janice Lueken know firsthand the importance of having quality health care available close to home. They both had health issues in the 1990s that caused them to travel across the state seeking treatment that was not available at home in Bemidji. Today, however, it’s a different story. Recently Janice underwent hip replacement surgery at Sanford Bemidji Orthopedic Clinic with orthopedic surgeon Jason Caron, MD. “Out of town care is often impersonal. Dr. Caron’s care was outstanding and it was so nice to be close to home,” Janice said. Long-time supporters of the Bemidji community, the Luekens were inspired to support the Sanford Health Foundation of Northern Minnesota’s recent project, Together. For Life., when they heard of the extraordinary impact it would have on the ability for hundreds of patients each year to receive the care they need right here at home. The campaign
made two new services possible in Bemidji: 24-hour cardiology care and the da Vinci® robotic surgical system. “We have witnessed amazing growth in the health care available in Bemidji over the years and it has been extremely beneficial for our community and region as a whole,” Janice said. “We are fortunate to have this kind of superior care here and are proud to support its growth.”
When you can give back to the community who gave so much to you, there’s no greater feeling in the world. According to Penny Echternach, Executive Director of Sanford Health Foundation of Northern Minnesota, the generosity of the Luekens and many other donors ensures miracles in medicine happen every day at Sanford Bemidji. “We are so grateful for the Luekens’ leadership
in making this gift, and for their support in making these vital new services possible at Sanford Bemidji,” she said. “In addition to bringing the miraculous tool of da Vinci® robotics here, the new cardiology center offers patients the lifesaving care they need within moments of arriving at our door versus spending hours of time traveling to another facility for emergency cardiac care.” Health care is just one of many important causes the Luekens have supported over the years. Their philanthropy is fueled by gratitude for the community that supported their business, Lueken’s Village Foods, for 46 years. “When you can give back to the community who gave so much to you, there’s no greater feeling in the world,” Joe said. Have you considered a bequest to the Sanford Health Foundation?
The Smyithe Family Knows Hospice Provides Quality of Life at the End of Life Liz Horlick spends time with her father, Frederick “Fred” Smyithe and Sanford Bemidji Hospice nurse, Cindy Hockenson, at Trillium on the WoodsEdge campus where Fred lives.
Who’s your guardian angel? All Sanford employees and volunteers are dedicated to making a meaningful difference in a patient’s hospital experience. But sometimes, just one of these people can make all the difference. The Sanford Health Foundation has launched a program called Guardian Angel, which allows patients and families to thank a Sanford doctor, nurse, staff member or volunteer who made their hospital experiences special.
Those individuals honored by a patient or loved one for exceptional care receive a beautiful angel pin to wear proudly. Gifts to the program support excellence in facilities, services and technology to enhance patient experiences now and in the future.
To recognize your Guardian Angel, please call the Foundation at (218) 333-5515 or visit bemidji.sanfordhealth.org/foundation to make a gift online today.
Pulling For Hospice and Palliative Care From Sanford Bemidji Hospice early the morning of Monday, April 22, Joe Dahlby and Earl Speckman began making their 340-mile trek from Bemidji, MN, to Joice, IA, in a covered wagon pulled by draft mules Rufus and Rowdy. The day marked Earl’s 80th birthday and a chance to fulfill a bucket list wish for Joe. The trek is also being made to raise awareness for hospice and palliative care across the state. They are inviting gifts from communities along their journey to support local hospice and palliative care programs along the trail. Track their progress by visiting their blog: www. travelingthetrailwithrufusandrowdy.blogspot.com. To make a contribution to Sanford Bemidji Hospice in honor of their travels log on to bemidji.sanfordhealth.org/foundation. bemidji.sanfordhealth.org/foundation
A bequest through your will or estate plan to Sanford Health Foundation of Northern Minnesota is a simple way to ensure your life’s work and personal values will be remembered as you wish them to be, leaving a legacy in health care that will benefit countless lives for generations to come. For more information, contact the Foundation at (218) 333-5515 or visit bemidji. sanfordhealth.org/foundation.
Three times Liz Horlick’s family has faced the heartache of watching someone close to them deal with a terminal illness. Over the past 13 years, both her mother and step mother were diagnosed with varying forms of cancer and her father with Alzheimer’s disease. Each time, she and her family were grateful for the services of Sanford Bemidji Hospice. “I’d have to say that, from the onset, we were amazed,” Horlick said. “They gently asked the difficult questions, helped us with the difficult truths and, right along with us, cried as we made one difficult decision after the other.” Horlick’s family first considered hospice when her mother, Margery “Marge” Smyithe’s, cancer recurred for a fourth time in 2000. “We nearly lost her in early May 2000, but she rallied one more time until December when we were told the cancer was taking over in a big way,” Horlick said. Horlick’s mother died in March 2001.
Thank you. Programs featured in this publication benefit from the support of readers like you. encourage 18
Horlick’s father, Frederick “Fred” Smyithe,
remarried and the newlyweds lived happily for nearly seven years. But her step mother, Betty Smyithe, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given six to nine months to live. She died in October 2009. With both cases of terminal illness, Horlick said her family knew they couldn’t handle the final stages alone. They didn’t have the means or the knowledge to be of much help or comfort, but it was still difficult to choose hospice services. “Initially, the word ‘hospice’ meant that we were conceding to their cancers and giving in to death when, up to that point, their journeys had been all about hope and survival,” Horlick said. “Hospice had never been part of our family’s vocabulary, and it just sounded like we were giving up all the hope we’d worked so hard to build.” Sanford Bemidji Hospice, on the contrary, served all their needs. “Hospice was always there to take care of any discomforts and our greatest fears with the most amazing professionalism,” she said. “And they loved Mom and Betty with all their hearts, even on the
most difficult of their days. That love was reciprocal, and Mom and Betty were so grateful for the time hospice spent making the end of their lives much less difficult.” Horlick’s father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in August 2009 and entered Sanford Bemidji Hospice in the fall of 2012. “I doubt dad even remembers being on the other side of the door when both Mom and Betty had hospice care, but he knows his ‘hospice people’ are very special folks,” Horlick said. “He’s grateful to have someone to listen." Donations to Sanford Bemidji Hospice help provide compassionate end-of-life care for patients and their families. Donors allow hospice staff to meet the special needs of patients and their families by providing pain management, spiritual and social support and bereavement counseling.
