For a better way of life Gate City Bank impacts pediatric oncology at Roger Maris
Gate City Bank’s gift was one of three challenge gifts announced at the Roger Maris Gala on Nov. 17.
For Gate City Bank, philanthropy and volunteerism provide the foundation of a corporate culture that is dedicated to supporting the communities they serve. This commitment was evident during the Roger Maris Gala on Nov. 17 when the bank made a $500,000 gift to create an endowment to benefit pediatric oncology at the Roger Maris Cancer Center. “We were humbled by the response,” said Gate City Bank Chairman, President and CEO Steve Swiontek, about Gala guests recognizing bank leadership with a standing ovation. “Philanthropy is something we do on a daily basis; we don’t expect anything in return.” Cover photo: Gate City Bank’s gift will have a lasting impact for pediatric cancer patients and their families. Gate City Bank, founded in 1923, serves 19 communities throughout North Dakota and Minnesota. Known regionally for their commitment to investing in the communities they serve and providing a better way of life, the bank was recently awarded the Corporate Leadership Philanthropy Award by the ND Chapter of Association of Fundraising Professionals. Employees also embrace the bank’s mission – having volunteered a total of 16,700 hours in 2011.
“Philanthropy and volunteerism are within us – they are part of our culture, they are how we operate and function,” said Swiontek. “We want our employees to see the impact we can make in our communities. It’s our privilege and commitment to make the lives of our customers and employees better by investing in them and their communities for a better way of life.” Pediatric oncology has always had a special place in Swiontek’s heart. His wife, Mary Anne, worked in the Roger Maris Cancer Center as a registered nurse in that field for ten years. “I remember visiting Mary Anne at Roger Maris and seeing the nurses and physicians working with children and their families,” said Swiontek. “It’s a reminder that our issues are not as big as we might think.” The playroom in the newly remodeled downtown campus of the Roger Maris Cancer Center will be named the Gate City Bank Playroom in honor of their gift. The endowment will provide patients and families with the resources, programs and technology they need to best cope with a cancer diagnosis. According to Roger Maris staff, children and their families view the playroom as a refuge… a safe place to play games and be a kid during the biggest challenge of their lives. “Gate City Bank has demonstrated remarkable leadership in making this gift towards Pediatric Oncology through the Building Tomorrow Today campaign,” said Sanford Health Foundation President Brian Mortenson. “This gift will leave a lasting legacy on the future of the Roger Maris Cancer Center and will make an impact on the patients and families we serve for generations to come.”

An evening filled with Waves of Wonder
Harpist, Rachel Brandwein, filled the entry of the dome with beautiful music. Robert Robinson, Minneapolis, inspired the crowd to clap along to “Hold on, a change is coming.”
Waves of Wonder engulfed the Fargodome on Saturday, Nov. 17 for the Inaugural Roger Maris Gala. The normally austere dome was transformed into a space worthy of the black tie affair with décor featuring the theme– Waves of Wonder. More than 850 guests helped raise more than $1.2 million to benefit the Roger Maris Cancer Center. “It’s an odd and difficult dichotomy for us to lift up the words of cancer and celebration in the same sentence,” said Sanford Health Foundation President Brian Mortenson. “We all understand that the tragic and deadly thing that is known as cancer is met head on every single day by the hopeful and inspirational, life-giving and life-saving impact of the work of the people of the Roger Maris Cancer Center.” A surprise appearance by Robert Robinson roused the crowd to clap along with an awe-inspiring rendition of “Hold On, A Change is Coming.” The powerful program allowed guests a rare look inside the joys and sorrows of three patients facing a cancer diagnosis. Through video diaries and personal presentations on stage, Nancy Moore and Kirk Dean shared their journeys, and Dan and Christine Lawson shared their son Isaiah’s story. Afterward, guests were given the opportunity to support health care for cancer patients. “What philanthropic giving provides is above and beyond measures for our patients,” said Mortenson. “It’s all about supporting extraordinary patient service, cutting-edge research and over-the-top lifesaving and life-giving capacity.”
survivors,” said Marilyn Guy, committee chair. “It’s an honor and a privilege to have served on a committee with these women and to live in a community that cares compassionately for those going through cancer treatment, celebrates successes with them on their journey and invests in the research needed for even greater hope for the future.” The Fargo-Moorhead community united for the patients served at the Roger Maris Cancer Center – gifts from the evening will provide unprecedented patient care and cutting edge research and technology so patients can continue to receive the best care at Sanford Health in Fargo. While the event focused on the inspiring stories of the Roger Maris Cancer Center, attendees also enjoyed dinner followed by dancing to the Casablanca Orchestra. Waves of Wonder also flowed into the complimentary photo area where guests posed with larger than life ribbons and a 1969 Rolls Royce. Special guests, the Maris Family, traveled from Florida to attend the inaugural event. “We were so pleased to attend this year’s Gala,” said Pat Maris. “It was a wonderful event and the stories of patient care and treatment really were inspirational. It truly is exciting to see all of the support from the community for the Roger Maris Cancer Center.” The Roger Maris Gala Committee were integral to the wonder of the evening – lending their expertise to all areas of the event from the invitations to the menu and décor. “The splendor of the transformed Fargodome was surpassed only by the compelling stories that we heard throughout the night from cancer
