Little summer rest for two seniors COURTESY OF LEE COUNTY SCHOOLS
S
ummer break for high school students is only about 10 weeks long and two seniors from Lee County will be spending six of those weeks this year at the Governor’s School of North Carolina. Lynn NguyenLynn Nguyen, a rising senior at Southern Lee High School, and Alana Edwards, a rising senior at Lee County High School, have both been accepted to the Governor’s School, a residential summer education program for gifted high school students across North Carolina. Both will attend the Governor’s School West campus in Winston-Salem. Nguyen will be studying math. “With math, there’s a definite answer – it’s not up to the person to interpret it,” she said. Meanwhile, Edwards is set to study social science. “I’m not sure what I want to do as a career, but it’ll probably be some mix of dealing with the environment and public policy,” she said. “Maybe environmental law.” Both applied in the fall and were made aware of their acceptance to the program in March. The application process consisted of two essays

– one explaining why they wanted to attend and what they wanted to study, and a second about a social issue they felt was important. Edwards chose water pollution and privatization in third world countries as the social issue about which she was concerned. “It’s a basic human resource that I think all people should be entitled to,” she said, explaining that she first became interested in the topic in her freshman environmental science class. “It’s so easy to take water for granted, but it’s a struggle in some parts of the world to get enough.” Nguyen, meanwhile, wrote about North Korea’s totalitarian government and its repressive policies. “Lately I’ve been interested in human rights,” she said. “And I thought that the government (in
North Korea) was too controlling. It’s too much.” Both Edwards and Nguyen are looking forward to the school’s class structure, which emphasizes learning without grades or tests. Neither said they’re too concerned about giving up a large portion of their summer break. “I thought about (giving up summer vacation) slightly at first, but I’m not really too worried about it,” Nguyen said. “The fact that it’s so open is something I’m looking forward to,” Edwards said. “It’s an environment where I can explore more. I’m kind of a perfectionist, so it’ll be good to have a chance to not be afraid to fail or to ask the wrong question.” Nguyen’s principal at Southern Lee, Chris Dossenbach, looks forward to seeing what she accomplishes over the summer. “We are so
proud of Lynn’s accomplishments and I know that she will do great things while attending Governor’s School,” Dossenbach said. “This is an excellent opportunity for Lynn to expand her mind, learn new things, meet new people and to form relationships that will last forever. The Southern Lee family wishes Lynn the best of luck this summer.” Likewise, Lee County High School Principal Kenna Wilson said the
school’s staff is excited for Edwards and proud of her achievement. “Her efforts to seek out this prestigious opportunity to grow and to learn during the summer show how special she is as a student and as a young lady,” she said. “We are so proud of her.” Lynn Warren, director of AIG education for Lee County Schools, said both Edwards and Nguyen are “outstanding and
well-rounded students.” “They are wonderful candidates for Governor’s School,” Warren said. “They are strong in their academics while also participating in a number of school sports and other activities. Additionally, and very importantly, they are generous in their efforts to help others. Both are respected by their peers for their maturity and intellect. They will represent Lee County Schools well.”

Her uncle is involved with NC Trout Unlimited’s chapter , in Clinton, and that organization sponsored her application to the 2015 Teen Summit held over six days in June and July near Western Carolina University in Cullowhee. She was one of 24 teens in the United States selected to attend the summit. “It’s a leadership program, so they’re going to teach some leadership skills,” she
explained. “I want to be able to show people my age that it’s okay to fish and get outside-especially girls. I want to let them know you can hold a fish and still be a girl.” Basinger, who keeps things feminine with a pink fly rod bearing her name, said she likes to fish “a decent amount” in the warmer months of the year. “I love holding the fish, the way it feels. I don’t know why I love it, I think it’s weird. It’s the only animal like that that I can touch,” she said. Basinger has been involved with an NC Trout Unlimited youth trip before. In 2013, she attended a camp at Lake Logan, near Canton, where she caught a large rainbow trout. A photo of that catch, which was taken by her father, appears on the organization’s website (nctu.org) for the 2015 Teen Summit. “It’s a story,” Basinger says with a sigh when asked about that photo. “I was one of the only girls at the camp and I wasn’t catching anything. One of the men who was there and giving tours around the camp was having me cast in weird places like under rocks, and all I was catching at first was rocks. I wanted to go to a different fly. I like dry flies because I like to see the fish jump out of the water and when I did, I caught a 20-inch rainbow trout. It was exciting.” While she hopes to bring leadership skills home after this summer, Basinger’s experience with fly fishing and NC Trout Unlimited has

He brought me to do a presentation to his Rotary club. My dad’s boss was there, and he enjoyed it.” Was she intimidated speaking to a group of grown-up business professionals? “Intimidated?” she asked, laughing. “Not when I’m prepared.” Lee County High School Principal Kenna Wilson expressed pride at Basinger’s selection and the leadership skills she already possesses. “Kiley is a student at LCHS that follows her passion in so many areas,” she said. “It is no surprise that she is a leader and stands out in a sport that is traditionally seen as a male sport. As her principal, I absolutely love her spirit.”
