About the Program Join San Francisco Art Institute’s (SFAI) immersive three-week summer Young Artist Program (YAP) and connect with a creative community of peers who forge new ways of looking at and living in the world. YAP is the perfect place to get your hands dirty, learn new artistic techniques, and express yourself. Courses are led by dedicated artists and teachers during morning and afternoon sessions. Courses take place on our historic Chestnut Street campus in the heart of San Francisco—look out at Alcatraz and the Bay during lunch in the SFAI Café; take in the Diego Rivera mural during a painting lesson about public art and scale; see a constantly rotating display of inspiring student artwork on your break; spend time in the Anne Bremer Memorial library which houses over 20,000 art books, magazines, and videos; or participate in a YAP lunchtime social event.

Morning
M–F | 9:30am–12:30pm
Digital Animation
Create short, animated movies using Flash software and explore the basic concepts of drawing, sound, interactivity, symbols, and text. Prerequisite: Basic computer knowledge.
Expressive Painting
Develop creative and technical fluency in acrylic painting by exploring color and composition, surface preparation, and paint handling as you work from the live model, observation, and photographs.
Line to Life Drawing
Learn the fundamentals of composition and drawing, working from still lifes and live models to create traditional and nontraditional drawings using graphite, charcoal, ink, and other media. Models in the Young Artist Program are clothed or in bathing suit attire. No prerequisite.
Screenprinting
This course introduces you to screenprinting processes and techniques that utilize drawing skills, digital technology, and basic design principals that allow you to create prints on fabric, paper, plastic, and more.
Black-and-White Photography
Learn the basics of 35mm photography, black-and-white film processing, contact printing, and print enlarging, while experimenting with traditional and nontraditional photographic methods. Afternoon
M–F | 1:30–4:30pm
Expressive Painting

Digital Photography
Explore digital photography as a creative and expressive tool while you shoot images, learn camera operations, make digital prints, discuss photography with your classmates, and critique student work. Students must provide their own digital camera with manual settings.
Video Art
Explore the diverse uses of video in modern culture as you learn the basics of video camera operation, lighting, and editing to create innovative video work based on your personal interests. A personal video camera is helpful, but not necessary.
Sculptural Forms
Explore building in three-dimensions with a variety of materials, including clay, cardboard, found objects, fabric, and plaster while learning the importance of place, site, and scale in contemporary sculpture. Images: (above) YAP student works on a screenprinting project, 2019.

Additional Program Details FRIDAY WORKSHOPS 12:30–1:30pm
In addition to studying in a studio environment, students participate in collaborative projects on Fridays. These sessions take place between classes from 12:30–1:30pm and will include technical workshops and conceptual exercises such as a collaborative mural project, exquisite corpse drawing exercises, or stop motion animations.
YAP EXHIBITION Friday, August 14 4:30–6pm
A required campus-wide exhibition and screening celebrates the extraordinary work of YAP participants. Join us Friday, August 14, from 4:30–6pm. Video and Animation screening will commence at 4:30pm in the Osher Lecture Hall, followed by program closing remarks and the campus-wide exhibition until 6pm.
LUNCH TIME
Students attending both AM and PM sections are encouraged to bring a packed lunch as food service will not be available. All students are also invited to join the YAP team for the Friday lunch hour, which includes technical workshops and conceptual exercises such as a collaborative mural project, exquisite corpse drawing exercises, or stop motion animations.
