Annual Report PHILANTHROPY IN ACTION
2016-2017
Note from the Co-Clerks of the Board of Trustees, Seth Brenzel & Shabnam Koirala-Azad
One of the most rewarding aspects of being involved with a Quaker school is the opportunity to reflect. As we share with you the 2016-2017 Annual Report, we welcome this opportunity for two important reasons. First, it gives us a chance to honor what was a significant change for our school last year as we welcomed Mike Hanas as our new Head of School. The ease of this transition belies its significance, and speaks volumes about Mike, the Friends faculty and staff, and our families. Just as importantly, this report provides us a chance to reflect upon the extraordinary contributions, financial and otherwise, of our greater Friends community. From philanthropic contributions to engagement in our work with future initiatives, our community has demonstrated our shared values at every turn, asking thoughtful questions, sharing energy and ideas, and stewarding our school together. We are keenly aware of the importance of this generosity and engagement for our young school, and we are deeply grateful. Thank you for all of the ways in which you’ve contributed to San Francisco Friend School’s journey thus far.
Letting Our Lives Speak: Quaker Values in Action In the spirit of continuing revelation, our service learning program is structured so that students can deeply engage with issues of social justice as part of our shared goal of working towards a more caring and just society. This year, our eighth graders are partnering with The Gubbio Project, whose mission is “to be in community with and to provide a sacred space and sanctuary for unhoused people in need of safe, compassionate respite during the day. Every Monday and Friday, a cohort of eighth graders walks two blocks to St. John the Evangelist to partner with the Project to wash sleeping mats, sweep the courtyard, and tidy the sidewalks which are often lined with street encampments. In partnering with Gubbio Project, we teach our students that problem-solving cannot be done from a distance. Engaging in direct service to support such a powerful element of our shared humanity, that of sleep or rest, has had a powerful effect on our conversations about homelessness. A Friends education makes time and space for students to have authentic, real world encounters and experiences, allowing us to lift up the voices of those who may be invisible or marginalized in our society.
Operating Statement Each year, the Board of Trustees carefully balances the fiscal and programmatic needs of the school, while attending to the vitality of our Quaker values and school community. Our operating budget reflects our priorities as a school, and we are proud to lead the way among Bay Area schools in our commitment to socio-economic diversity through our adjustable tuition and Friends Community Scholars programs. As a young school without a large endowment, we depend on the generosity of our community for philanthropic support. This, along with careful stewardship of our school’s finances, has placed us in a strong financial position.

Development Report We are grateful for the tremendous generosity with which our community supported Friends in 2016-17. Gifts from our parent community, faculty and staff, trustees, alumni, grandparents and friends lift up every aspect of our school and ensure our financial sustainability. Each gift, large and small, makes a difference. ANNUAL FUND The Annual Fund is the foundation of our fundraising program. As the school’s largest source of non-tuition income, the Annual Fund ensures that SFFS provides a breadth of programs we cannot fund through tuition alone. Last year, a generous anonymous family offered a $10,000 match to fellow 8th grade families and the Board of Trustees. In total, this helped raise an additional $22,450 for the Annual Fund, bringing our total for the year to $761,997. COMING TOGETHER IN COMMUNITY We celebrate community and a shared love of reading through two community events each year, the Blue Party and Booktopia. The Blue Party supports our adjustable tuition program, and is equal parts fundraiser and community builder. Our annual library fundraiser, Booktopia, supports our library collection and the Birthday Books program, a way of equitably celebrating birthdays and our students’ love of reading. Together, these two events raised $169,886 from our community. Annual Fund Giving By Gift Size / # of Donations / Amount Received >$10K 11 $158,686 $5K-$10K $2.5K-$5K $1K-$2.5K
