PHILANTHROPY IN ACTION SAN FRANCISCO FRIENDS SCHOOL Annual Report 2020–2021
To Our Families and Friends, Who Make Our Learning Community Possible
2
LETT E R from the H EA D OF SCHOOL Dear Friends, One year ago we celebrated making it through the beginning of what we did not realize then would be a multi-year pandemic. We savored victories especially sweet and summoned the will and goodwill to meet unprecedented challenges. While we continue to navigate stormy seas and savor moments in safe harbor with no clear finish line in sight, I am very happy—no, I consider it a privilege—to report that we have done so in true Friends fashion: with Quaker values at the center, with our community connections in many ways stronger than ever, with joy reignited and serving as the oxygen for hard work, with humor alive and well, and with as clear a picture of what matters most as we may ever have had.
In celebrating what we can, I also want to acknowledge how difficult this time has been for so many in so many ways. I am mindful of many of these hardships, and I could not be more grateful for the ways in which you have continued to lift up our community at every turn, including your unparalleled generosity. At the end of this school year, I will be passing the reins of San Francisco Friends School to incoming Head of School Pankti Sevak, and I will do so with great confidence that you will welcome her warmly and together further the mission of Friends in preparation for whatever comes next.
Thinking SFFS,
Mike Hanas Head of School

LETT E R from the C O- C L E R KS OF T H E B OA R D OF T R U STE E S
Dear Friends, As we reflect on the 2020–2021 academic year, we continue to be inspired by the grace, generosity of spirit, and resilience of the San Francisco Friends School community. We are deeply grateful for the leadership and dedication of the administration, faculty, and the entire SFFS professional community for navigating the uncertainties of such a challenging year while upholding the Quaker values we all hold dear. We also appreciate the efforts of the Parents Association to create and support community connections, despite our physical distance. The SFFS community stepped up in some incredible ways during the last year, supporting the first-ever 48 Hours for Friends days of giving and virtual Blue Party and helping us successfully meet our goal for the Friends Forward endowment campaign. Also new last year was the launch of FiredUp, a collaboration between the Board, the Parents Association, and the Professional Development Committee to give the faculty and staff frequent boosts of appreciation and gratitude throughout the year. Another collaborative effort between administration, the Board, and our neighbors at Millennium School secured SFMTA approval for extra outdoor space with Slow Streets access to the bike lane on Valencia. Finally, we are especially grateful to the Head of School Search Committee, led by Shabnam Koirala-Azad and Edward Chung, in partnership with Carney Sandoe, for the thoughtful and successful completion of the search for the third head of the San Francisco Friends School. This coming year will be an exciting one as we celebrate Mike Hanas and welcome Pankti Sevak to SFFS! As we prepare for SFFS to enter its 20th year, we thank you for your ongoing commitment to the San Francisco Friends School and for the many ways you continue to support the school and its mission.
Maureen McAvoy and Kelly McKane Co-Clerks of the Board of Trustees

ART INSPIRED BY DATA by Jennifer Stuart, Academic Integration Specialist Our 6th Grade math students explore how data tells stories as an example of our integrative curriculum at Friends. In March of 2021, our 6th Grade math students engaged in a project inspired by “Dear Data,” a year-long analog data drawing project created by two awardwinning information designers, Georgia Lupi and Stefanie Posavec. Each week for a year, the artists collected and measured a particular type of data from their own lives. They then used this data to make a drawing on a postcard-sized piece of paper, putting the data art on one side and a key Examples of our students’ visual data collection and analysis. to reading the data on the other. Then, they mailed each other the data art. Examples of data they collected include: how many times they said or wrote the word “data” in a week, a variety of data about their book collections, data about the kinds of photos they take on their phone, and data about the sounds that surround them.
6
After learning about Dear Data, analyzing many examples of visual data, and practicing their art skills, the 6th-Graders at SFFS started their own journey. First, they decided what data they wanted and set about collecting it. Next, they looked at the data and thought about what the information told them. They were then challenged to relay that story visually, using what they learned from their experiments and keeping in mind that their final picture had to be understandable (when using a key).
For their project, our SFFS students focused on two objectives: 1. To Learn to See—as artists and mathematicians, and to learn about using data as a material. 2. To Observe, Acknowledge, Count, and Draw—essentially, to immerse themselves in the world of data. Additionally, students created their postcards while keeping in mind that data artists design data so it is more accessible and does not overload the brain; that data visualization has become an art form; and that human beings respond intuitively and emotionally to patterns. To learn more about the project that inspired our 6th Grade Friends, please visit the Dear Data website at www.dear-data.com/ theproject.

Revenue & Expenses 2020–2021 In 2020-21, Friends incurred over $1.9M of Covid-related expenses so that we could continue to provide a high-quality education to each of our students whether they were at home or at 250 Valencia. We hired additional educational staff, provided teacher training, and purchased technology and equipment including: laptops, iPads, smartboards, and software. In prioritizing health and safety, we hired a health coordinator, purchased protective equipment like masks and face shields, and made necessary building modifications. Finally, we included an increase in emergency Adjustable Tuition in order to help sustain our community. As an independent school we depend on tuition and the philanthropic support of our community to sustain our programs and strategic priorities. We are grateful for the generosity of our community, and for the careful stewardship of our budget, to allow us to remain in a strong financial position. Please note that the revenue chart below does not reflect restricted funds raised for the Friends Forward endowment campaign.

Coming Together in an Unprecedented Year The San Francisco Friends School community came together in remarkable ways throughout last school year. Restrictions around gathering in-person forced us to rethink beloved traditions like Booktopia and Blue Party, and provided the chance to create new opportunities for connection through events like Coffees with Trustees, Ask Mike Anything community discussions, and Zoom Happy Hours. Despite the challenges, we celebrated record-breaking fundraising. The Friends Annual Fund is the cornerstone of our fundraising program and the school’s largest source of non-tuition income. It ensures that Friends can sustain a breadth of programs beyond what tuition alone can provide. Last year, gifts to the Annual Fund totaled $1,075,572—the most we’ve ever raised! An additional $262,605 was raised for Adjustable Tuition through our first-ever 48 Hours for Friends and (virtual) Blue Party. Every gift to SFFS is an opportunity to grow and shape the lives of our students. We are tremendously grateful for the gifts from parents, faculty, staff, trustees, alumni, grandparents, and friends that strengthen every aspect of our school and nourish our bright future. Friends Forward Endowment Update In May of 2019, the SFFS Board of Trustees voted to launch the Friends Forward Endowment Campaign. It was an effort to raise money for an unrestricted endowment dedicated to helping our school retain the best faculty and staff both now and into the future. Two years later, in the Spring of 2021, our school closed out the campaign with pledges and gifts totaling over $5.3 million. Because endowed funds are invested in perpetuity, these gifts will have a major impact on our school’s long-term future. Each year a percentage of the fund will be disbursed to the school’s budget providing our trustees with an additional source of revenue as they plan for the year ahead. With that additional income, the board will have more flexibility to act on SFFS’s strategic priorities and to adapt to our community’s evolving needs. The Friends Forward endowment is already starting to grow. Beginning last year, SFFS’s Investment Committee invested some of the gifts that we had already received. As of June 30, 2021, the fair market value of the Friends Forward endowment was $4,531,082, representing a 35% return on our initial investments. Over time, this endowed fund will continue to grow and ensure that our school will thrive long into the future. Our Friends Forward endowment, as well as the Cathy Hunter Fund for the Future endowment, helps to ensure that Friends continues to attract and maintain stellar faculty and provide a top-notch learning environment for our students.
