FROM THE CEO Dear Arts Center Members,

From right to left: Jim Richerson, Victor F. Keen, Liz Szabo, LuDel Walter

Over the years, the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center and Buell Children’s Museum have consistently been voted Best Gallery and Best Museum by Pueblo Chieftain readers in their Best of Pueblo contest. We are eternally grateful for the confidence in our world-class facilities. We continue to expand our course offerings through the Learning Center. Our attendance numbers also continue to grow. Coming in 2020, through the generosity of the Rawlings Foundation, we will be turning the previous garden level space of the Buell Children’s Museum into the Rawlings Learning Center to allow for more music and arts education classes.

As we swing into the Holiday Season, we at the Arts Center are excited that this year’s performance of the Nutcracker Ballet will be the 20th anniversary of the Southern Colorado family tradition. So many have worked hard to make this a magical performance. Most of the Nutcracker performances sell out early, so don’t wait to get your tickets. This year, the production continues with its classical style under the artistic direction of Nanine Wainwright and opens December 5th with 5 performances. It was my great pleasure to host the collector Victor Keen, a Pueblo native, and his wife Jeanne Ruddy for the opening weekend of the Outsider Art exhibit on display through January 2020. Outsider artists are self-taught; often with little contact with the mainstream art world or art institutions. In many cases, their work is discovered only after their deaths. Keen began amassing his collection several years ago following a successful career as a lawyer practicing in Philadelphia. Eventually, the collection became so large that he, and others, created the Bethany Mission Gallery. The stunning collection on display features 130 pieces by 31 artists. We are proud to be a part of the Outsider Art catalogue - an achievement in itself – which allows the Arts Center to have a long lasting presence beyond the exhibition. It is a great pairing with the original “Outsider Artists” we have in our permanent collection – the works of the santeros on display in A Spirit of Tradition: From the Bishop Tafoya Collection. Next year if you ask, “is the glass half empty, or half full?” the answer is a resounding Completely Full! On June 6, 2020, we’ll be unveiling Inspiration: Dale Chihuly, James Mongrain, and Vintage Venetian Glass from the George R. Stroemple Collection. The Stroemple Collection is internationally-recognized as one of the most significant collections of artwork documenting the studio glass movement in the Pacific Northwest. With holdings by such luminaries as Dale Chihuly, Lino Tagliapietra, and Flora Mace, the Stroemple Collection illustrates both the early nascence and mature culmination of contemporary glass art-making. For those who aren’t familiar with the artists and the collection, I urge you to visit our website to learn more. In the five and a half years that I’ve been with the Arts Center, I’ve seen tremendous growth and synergy in the arts community in Southern Colorado. As awareness of the arts as an important economic driver and tourist destination is more realized, the future appears very bright. Thank you all for your dedication and support of our wonderful Center. None of this is possible without the dedication to our mission by the staff, board, our city councilors and mayor, and our county commissioners. Thank you for your continued support of the arts in Southern Colorado,

STILL “CRACKING” ON

Celebrating 20 Years of Magic By Ashley Minnich

The Nutcracker is a staple production for dance companies around the world, and the Sangre de Cristo Ballet and School of Dance is no exception. Although the tradition of this classic tale extends further into Pueblo’s history than the past 20 years, the Arts Center has continuously housed the production (complete with guest Mother Gingers) since 2000. Over the years, many directors have brought the vision of their Nutcracker to life on the Arts Center stage, beginning with Karen Schaffenburg’s directorial debut in 2000. Although the production was titled Dance Noel, only performed Act II of The Nutcracker, and had only three performances; it was the beginning of a tradition that developed into a fully-fledged Nutcracker production by the following December in 2001. Karen, with the assistance of her husband Fernando Schaffenburg (who portrayed Herr Drosselmeyer for several years), recreated the show every winter until 2010 (for a total of 10 productions). Over those years we saw many iterations and new touches to make the show unique and fresh every time while continuing the tradition.

2002 saw the introduction of guest artists to the production in the form of Pacific Northwest Ballet dancers Astrit Zejnati and Patricia Barker in the roles of Cavalier and Sugarplum Fairy respectively and continues to host the occasional guest artist even today. The 2010 production saw the directorial introduction of the new Artistic Director, Misha Izotov, who noticeably changed the casting by removing the

Snow Queen and Cavalier from the performance in order to add some “reason” to the fanciful storyline. Donna Stinchcomb stepped in to direct the 2011 production before Stephen Jay Wynne began his innovative reign from 2012-2013 that introduced the idea of a 21st century Nutcracker to the stage complete with aerial silk artists, hip-hop soldier dolls, a karabebased battle scene complete with a ray-gun to take down the Mouse King. Michelle Boutros took over as Artistic Director from 2014-2016, continuing the futuristic feel and adding in some patriotism to the opening scene with a “Welcome Home Heroes” banner. Nanine Wainwright began her tenure as Artistic Director in 2017 by returning the show to its traditional roots in the Victorian era, after having previously assisted with choreography in 2016, and is directing the 20th production for 2019. Karen Schaffenburg, at the beginning of her tenure as director, was quoted as being hopeful that “our Nutcracker becomes an annual must-see event for the people of Pueblo”. And so far, we like to think we’ve been successful in continuing this tradition. It’s an immense amount of work to coordinate this production every year with aspects taking place both inside and outside of the Arts Center, but every year we continue to “crack on”.

Come early on December 5 and take photos with Santa and the Sugar Plum Fairy!

GEORGE ORWELL’S 1984 BY AQUILA THEATRE SUNDAY, MARCH 15, 2020 AT 4PM

“The classics made relevant with superb acting and clever staging” - The New Yorker

As our modern world grapples with the threats and benefits of technological integration, Aquila Theatre’s production of 1984 provides a space to appreciate the value of individual thought – an evocative and timely narrative of personal freedom against political repression. Today, Orwell’s prescient story resonates around the globe as individuals, systems, and governments clash. 1984 is a classic by one of literature’s most significant authors and provides the kind of evocative and innovative storytelling that suits Aquila’s bold, ensemble driven, physical style.

ARTIST: Christiana Lieberman PROFESSIONAL OR EMERGING ARTIST: Emerging/Art Historian TELL US ABOUT YOUR ART: When I do create work, it is usually conceptual, and based off some sort of theory. This work (shown right) is titled “Visibility is a Trap” and draws from theory by Michel Foucault and addresses issues concerning social media. BUT YOU DON’T CREATE ART ANYMORE? After high school, I stopped being passionate about making my own art, and grew interested in the art other people have created

and the power/importance every piece of artwork has. COMPLETE THIS SENTENCE. ART IS... our voice to tell the stories of who we are. INSPIRATIONS: Romantic authors; Edgar Allen Poe, Henry David Thoreau, and Ralph Waldo Emerson are among my top favorites--they focus on humanity, nonconformity, and focusing on the self. NEXT BIG GOAL: To curate an art museum FAVORITE ARTISTS: Marcel Duchamp, Salvador Dali, Frida Kahlo

We asked the Milliken family a few questions about the Arts Center, Dancing, and things in general. Here’s what they said… Q: Where’s the first place you go when you visit the Arts Center? We spend a lot of time at the School of Dance where our kids have all participated. Q: How and where do you find inspiration? Outdoors, performing and visual arts. Lots of reading and biographical documentaries. Q: Do you have a favorite artist? Too many to list. Favored genres/moments include Art Nouveau, Vienna Secession, Surrealism and modern fantasy art associated with fiction and performance environments. Q: What is your advice for the next generation? Unplug. Learn how to live and create unfettered by the pressure technology creates. Q: Just for fun – Who was your favorite president? Thomas Jefferson. Q: What do you enjoy most about the Arts Center? The community and multi-disciplinary aspects. SENSORY FRIENDLY EARLY OPEN DAYS AT THE BUELL CHILDREN’S MUSEUM 2nd Wednesday of the month, every other month starting Feb 2020, April, June, August, October, December Exception: June date is 3rd Wednesday

We’re opening early for our friends with sensory sensitivities! Program participants will have early access to the exhibits from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM before the Museum opens to the public at 11:00 am. These mornings are great times for children and families to play with our hands-on exhibits, explore the Art Studio, and enjoy family time in a safe, accessible and welcoming environment. This experience includes a sensory-modified setting, limited attendance, and sound and lighting adjustments. We also have a social story to help prepare families for their Museum experience. The Buell Children’s Museum will lower loud gallery sounds and roll out ‘touch cartons’ with sensoryfriendly activities. Staff members will be on hand throughout the site to answer questions. On your first visit, grab a sensory map to see the space’s active and quiet spots and check out the sensory break room.

American Library Association Notable Children’s Book; Publishers Weekly Best Children’s Book of the Year; International Reading Association Children’s Choice Award and more!

In their newest musical, Judy Moody and her brother Stink take audiences on a hilarious adventure. As usual, Judy is in a mood. After seeing her classmate’s picture on the front page of the newspaper, Judy wants to be famous and sets off to find fame and happiness. All the while, Stink and his foul-smelling sneakers become a real distraction as he vies for the coveted Golden Clothespin Award. This ship is extremely advanced since it runs off of a crystal powered by knowledge, which, luckily, our audience has in droves.
