ABOUT ME I’m a recent graduate of architecture seeking position of a Junior Architect. Through the past years, the architecture training and curriculum has offered me an exposure to a mixed form of design approach. Exposure to art, hand-on workshops, installation designs, site visits and design projects have evolved the way I perceive architecture today. Apart from architecture, my intersts lie in illustrations. I have an interest in layouts, designs, prints and posters. My alternate portfolio illustrators my work towards Design and Posters that has been attached with this Portfolio.

IN SEARCH OF DALIT EXPRESSION Nagpur, Maharashtra

Semester: IX + X, Thesis Guide: Ar. Jamshid Bhiwandiwalla Building Type: Institutional Built-Up Area: 3300 SQ M 6

Understanding the Community’s Practice VS the associated spaces, (Nagpur, Maharashtra) The Dalit narrative is a narrative that has largely consisted of archival of stories of oppression and their fight against it. These stories have always fought and still fight strong resistance in order to be heard. The caste stigma is the predominant reason why they are not as commonly discussed as they ought to be. This book explores the many modes used by the community in an effort to make themselves heard. It looks at the allied spaces that promote and play a role in the making of these spaces.

These practices are then compared to how the popular sites/projects associated with the community are received by the people and it questions whether they benefit the community at all. It studies the many limitations of these large scale projects in comparison to the community built spaces. This study is then led to exploration of a newer language that can be adopted for the building of spaces for the marginalized that benefits the community as well as the city that houses it. 7

INTENT The thesis thus is intended to look at a largely marginalized community in an alternate capacity. An attempt to see how the community can be looked at in a newer perspective. It intends to see what is it that has been limiting their spaces for so long (if it has) and what can be done to overcome it. It thus, is a thesis In Search Of Dalit Expression.

BUILDING DIAGRAM STRATEGY 1- The building is weaved around the edges for occupying only the periphery which is the current organic way the site is being encroached upon. 2- The peripheral strategy allows the ground to remain much open so as to not disturb the present activities that happen on site. 3- Choreographing various entry points to maintain the idea of porosity in from the street to the site. 10

INSTITUTION PLAN + DIAGRAMS The above plan shows the breakdown of the Institution proposes on the Indora Ground. It is largely a peripheral project with institution building forming along the back edge of the plot. This edge building then opens into a ground that ultimately leads to the large Amphitheatre that becomes a large space for Public Gathering. The Drawings on the right show resolution diagrams of the site as a whole. 16

Jeene Bhi Do Yaaron Mumbai, Maharashtra

Semester: IX, Housing Guide: Ar. Vandana Ranjitsinh & Ar. Ashok Lal Building Type: Residential Complex 24

Brief Housing Studio conducted in Semester 9 - MHADA LIG (Malvani, Mumbai) The design aims to further the idea of incrementality module that was proposed by Mhada to the residents of Mhada - LIG Colony. Taking the idea of incrementality forward, the following aspects were to be looked at in details, 1 - How can incremental housing schemes provided by Mhada allow for growth within the dwelling spaces thereby future proofing the residents’ lifestyles? 2 - Can this incremental plan be just in terms of possession of space or can a new system of incrementality be introduced in terms of construction – ownership which is specific to Mhada – LIG alone?

3- How can more hybrid programs be generated that are specific to the lifestyle of people that live here? 4- How do we create a more interactive and open Mhada – LIG? 5- How can the incrementality spill onto the schemes of Design and rental – ownership schemes?

Musa Baug Complex Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh

Semester: VII, Architectural Design + Urban Design Studio Guide: Ar. Sonal Sundarajan Building Type: Institutional (Urban Farming & Horticulture Institute) 32

Urban Planning and Architectural Design studio in a Historical Context (Musa Baug, Lucknow) The Musa Baug precinct garners its importance from the Musa Baug monument. Due to lack of Public Infrastructure and its location in the extreme end of the city, Musa Baug has been subjected to absolute negelegance and zero public interaction. The master planning of Musa Baug thus looks at spreading the energy from Lucknow city centre towards this farther end of the city. Programs which could lead to the public engagement at this ends have been proposed to give character to the site. Auxiliary functions other than institutions form the main connectivity through the larger master plan proposal. The master plan thus consists of:

1- Provision for a Transit Terminal which becomes the entry to the City. 2- Sewage treatment plant with public functions along the embankment. 3- Revival of Musa Baug Monument overlooking the Charbaug Orchards. 4- Proposing a large Dairy Farm Unit. 5- Relooking at the idea of embankment in terms of pedestrian and cycling exclusive spaces. 6- Proposing a regulated public transit spots across the site. 7- Zone planning the Vasantkunj Valley adjacent to the Musa Baug site. 33

LUCKNOW MASTER PLAN DIAGRAMS The above diagram was a class studio which consisted of understanding the patterns of living within a historical context. This study was then complied and consolidated to come up with one large master plan with several architectural proposals. 34

These consisted of studies on: 1- Wet Lands 2- Energy Maps 3- Mobility Maps 4- Green corridors 35

MUSA BAUG CHAR BAUG The Plan of the project consists of a large Chaar Baug that is enclosed along the edges. The longitudinal axis connects the entrance to the Baug from one end to the Green House on the other while the other axis connects the two opposite ends of the street. The building along the edge of the street consists of programs that form the Horticulture institute. 39

THINK ABOUT THE RADIO (Ajmer, Rajasthan)

Semester: VI, Architectural Design Studio Guide: Mayuri Sissodia Building Type: Institutional (Exhibition and Archival Centre) 44

INSTITUTIONS OF FAITH Architectural Design studio in a Historical/Religious Context Radio: an object with a simple singular job of -Broadcasting. What connected one to the radio were the various forms of audio broadcasts it had to offer. These consisted of music and podcasts which had various styles of content delivery. Using this quality of a radio to device various formats of broadcasts forms the basic intent of the project. The proposal aims at cross-programming and creating an experimental studio for collaboration between various other religious and non- religious cultures with Sufism. The collaborative works would then be archived and broadcasted to reach the masses by way of radio and web telecast, live performances and exhibitions.

The Broadcasting Unit aims to sit as an external object within the site. It attempts to achieve this by striking a contrast in its finish by way of its construction technique. While the Dargah is majorly load bearing, the steel structure and lightness achieved by its slender members and porous Jalis consist of the main form of the building. The roof unit becomes the stitching element that holds the various pockets of programs as one goes along the stretch of the project which begins at the first gates and ends along the main shrine.

JUVENILE COURT + REMAND HOME (Dongri, Mumbai)

Semester: V, Architectural Design Studio Guide: Ar. Prashant Prabhu Building Type: Institutional (Court House and Juvenile Remand Home) 56

INSTITUTIONS OF DEMOCRACY Architectural Design studio in Democratic Institutions (Judiciary) Located in Umerkhadi, just a walk away from the Sandhurst Road Station, is the Dongri Juvenile Court Complex.

Thus, looking at the aspect of an ‘image’ of a court complex, the design makes use of the remand home as the first image for design while the court still runs the remand home fundamentally. To give an image and feeling of a workshop complex is the primary focus of the design. The complex has every building different from the previous one giving a sense of a diversity within the site as huge as 16000 sq m. However, the use of colours and common material across the site helps to bind all buildings together as one large juvenile court complex.

An image that a court building generally holds is that of intimidation and fear. A juvenile court takes this feeling even further. With over 200 juveniles living here, the least amount of built-up is offered to them with most amount of functions crammed into just a few buildings. With strict walls and clear demarcation across the site, the entire remand home is pushed to a very limited corner when it require the most amount of area. 57

Architecture Portfolio - Saniya Patil

GROUND FLOOR PLAN The Complex consists of the following: 1- The Entrance Security Block 2- Central Granary 3- Juvenile Court House 4- Remand Home 5- School Building 58

Mohana Health Care + Research Lab (Chakrata, Uttarakhand)

Semester: VI, Architectural Design Studio Guide: Ar. Namrata Kapoor + Ar. Apoorva Parekh Building Type: Institutional (Medical) 68

INSTITUTIONS OF EVERYDAY Architectural Design studio in the Mountain Settlement of Chakrata Creating Programs and Form from three stories: 1-ever since he was paralyzed bellow his waist after his fall, he has been useless on the fields. He lives on the charity of others. 2-that year the winter was harsh. We trudged across the snow to get us some warmth. 3 -lying on the road stuned, silenced, the hopping hope died. He had come with the letter she dreaded the most. Located on the topmost part of the settlement in Chakrata, Mohana is a settlement which has a lot of gradual terraces with houses that are cosy and compact.

In a settlement where life surrounds around crops, cattle farming and festivals throughout the year, the project attempts to provide a space dedicated to the health of those who live there. Extracting its design strategy from the given stories, the structure primarily consists of solariums and service spaces. The tall wood posts of the solariums work as the structural member for hanging the roofs over the service spaces. The project largely makes use of the local material in the traditional building ways as well as attempts to use them differently in order to create a space large enough to accommodate more people at a time. 69

Architecture Portfolio - Saniya Patil

Intervention Model The model illustrated the heavy stone pile walls that form the base of the project. These walls then hold the steel and glass solariums that rest on concrete pads that run on the top of stone walls. The Roof of the building is hung from these steel frames.

BUILDING STORIES CHAKRATA Measured Drawings

Semester: IV, Measured Drawing Studio 82

AD STUDIO in the Mountain Settlement of Chakrata (Chakrata, Uttarakhand)

However, these settlements are more than just the individual houses they are made up of. The spaces in between the houses are reflective of the kind of community and public life the people envision for themselves. This, we believe is what architecture is about, that it is not just the built form but what people choose to do with it and how they conceive it in their minds. The documentation of the four settlements thus aims to highlight the nuances of everyday life captured through instances and events that take place in these settlements, keeping in mind the architecture required to make these events happen. From simple acts like going to the market, or gazing at stars, or rearing bees, we have attempted to capture the spaces that house these activities.

The settlements in the hills have a unique style of the vernacular cyborg that they evolve as a community. The building typology has developed as a result of the climate and geographic conditions. The earthquake resistant construction is one we believe is very important to highlight and emphasis for its uniqueness and skill in craftsmanship. There is a great deal of ornamentation also carried out on the wooden members, whether posts or panels, that requires immense skill and patience. 83

THE PINK PROJECT

(Kamathipura, Mumbai)

Semester: III, Architectural Design Studio Guide: Ar. Rohan Shivkumar Building Type: Institutional (Health Care + Research Lab) 86

Architectural Design Studio - Semester III City Project - Mumbai Kamathipura - A hub of a place, has its major working class crafting away in restricted areas struggling for every inch of space. The Pink Project at Kamathipura aims to address this call of the site while providing additional programs to the structure so as to boost the economy and showcase the crafts of this city’s craftsmen and workmen. The building thus provides large studio spaces at the basement, A showroom space/market area at the grounds and an office area on the first floor level for larger marketing and administration.

The project aims to see architectural responses in terms of the usage of colours. It makes use of distinctive form and contrasting colours than that which already exist on site so as to draw masses towards it and provide exposure to city’s crafts. The Pink colour of the project thus stands as a celebrative element of the site’s history and its present aura.

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE Bloom Office, Cambodia

SEMESTER: VI, Architectural Design Studio GUIDE: Mayuri Sissodia BUILDING TYPE: Institutional (Exhibition and Archival Centre) BUILT-UP AREA: 3300 SQ M 90

Work done as a part of professional Practice (Internship) (Phnom Penh, Cambodia) Bloom Architecture is a design office based in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The firm was founded by Architects Antoine Meinnel and Joko Tandijono in 2015. An office that comprises of a team of not more than 20 architects has so far envisioned and worked towards the making of over 15 projects in the past 4 years. Their expertise ranges from projects that involve interior refurbishments to complex projects such as that of Hotels and Resorts. Their ability to visualize the relevance of their built design in the contemporary context of developing Cambodia is what makes them one of the few sought after design studios in Phnom Penh.

Context, Meanings, Heritage and Innovation, Sustainability and Integrations are the main themes that the office keeps in mind while shaping a new project. They make constant efforts to keep their designs anchored to its context and history, a strategy they adopt to avoid mere compilation of architectural elements. Their effort in understanding the use of local crafts and adopting its ways into today’s day and age proves their desire to sculpt and push the available resources to the destination of the everchanging ideologies of the design field.
