The San Jacinto College Foundation, Chesmar Foundation, and the Houston Endowment are tackling the teacher shortage together through innovative scholarship and grant programs.

The three organizations are ensuring San Jacinto College students can affordably earn their Bachelor of Applied Science in education with an emphasis in early childhood education.

“Our goal is to help fill the workforce gap in early childhood education by providing a new bachelor’s degree for students who are currently working in education,” said Dr. Brenda Hellyer, San Jacinto College Chancellor. “The need is high for qualified early childhood and elementary school teachers and professionals. As demographics change, our region and state must attract more diverse teachers. San Jacinto College is committed to working with our education partners to provide them with skilled, trained employees.”

The College's curriculum includes student teaching opportunities that prepare graduates to lead classrooms. Partnerships with Crosby, Deer Park, Pasadena, and Sheldon independent school districts ensure graduates have immediate jobs.

THE CHESMAR TEACHER SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Chesmar Foundation has donated $900,000 to support Texas residents pursuing a four-year teaching degree at the College. Half of the donation has created the Chesmar Teacher Scholarship Fund, and the other half is going toward alternative certification program testing. Chesmar Foundation’s support covers tuition, fees, and essential course materials, ensuring students can complete their programs and earn their teacher certification.

The scholarship targets 100 Bachelor of Applied Science in education students, providing funding each semester until they complete their degree.

HOUSTON ENDOWMENT

The Houston Endowment has also committed a $1.5 million grant to cover employee and operating costs during the initial two to three years of the Bachelor of Applied Science in education program.

The grant helped fund a recent program celebration. Current and prospective students and their families attended the come-and-go event to meet faculty and other classmates or learn more about the program.

Supporting Students’ Success:

The San Jacinto College Foundation empowers students to achieve their educational dreams. We are excited to have partners

— like the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo — that support this initiative as much as we do.

This year, the rodeo’s vocational/technical scholarship program expanded to include students pursuing associate degrees or certificates not only in industrial fields but also in medical technology. Eligible programs include nursing, radiologic technology, medical lab technology, pharmacy

technology, physical therapist assistant, and occupational therapy assistant.

“It is our mission at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo to nurture the next generation of skilled workers,” said Chris Boleman, rodeo president and

In 2024, the San Jacinto College Foundation received a $50,000 grant from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo for scholarships in these areas:

• Electrical technology

• Medical laboratory technology

• Plumbing technology

• Pharmacy technician

CEO. “There is a continuous demand for these individuals in our workforce, and we are proud to be able to support them in their post-secondary education journey. We are thrilled to be able to expand our impact this year, creating more opportunities for Houston students.”

• Licensed vocational nurse

This grant is part of a larger $400,000 commitment by the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo to support vocational scholarships at nine Houston-area colleges for the 2024-2025 academic year.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and San Jacinto College have been working together since 2002. In the 17 years that the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has supported the San Jacinto College Foundation, students have received 206 scholarships, totaling $463,486.

The San Jacinto College Foundation is honored to partner with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo to turn students’ dreams into a reality and build a brighter future for our community.

San Jacinto College Foundation:

The San Jacinto College Foundation supports students beyond scholarships, teaming with various departments to ensure students have access to industry-standard equipment and curriculum.

One example is the Foundation’s support for the new biotechnology spaces. San Jacinto College, the exclusive provider of the National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training in the southern U.S., recently celebrated two significant milestones. The College opened a new biomanufacturing training lab at the South Campus and broke ground for a state-of-the-art Center for Biotechnology at the Generation Park Campus. These locations will offer an Associate of Applied Science degree and onboarding

certifications to prepare new professionals with the knowledge and skills to excel in the field.

To ensure graduates’ career readiness, the College must stay ahead of the curve with the latest industry equipment. However, advanced equipment often costs thousands of dollars. Thanks to a generous Foundation donor, the biotechnology program purchased the CliniMACS Prodigy P/N 44314 (worth $80,000), an automated cell processing platform that enables scalable GMP-compliant manufacturing of cell therapy products. This essential equipment ensures students have the best resources for their education and careers.

“By collaborating with our departments and securing vital resources, the Foundation ensures students receive top education and training,” said Robert Cage, San Jacinto College Foundation executive director. “This not only prepares them for successful careers but also provides our area industries with ready employees. We proudly support initiatives that empower our students and strengthen our community’s future workforce.”
