RESEARCH PROJECTS Thesis Project (B.Arch) Mumbai, India

Psychiatric Rehab. Center B. Arch Thesis
Research Abstract: In developing countries like India, more prominence is given to physical health than mental health, which is considered by some societies, as stigma prevails it, as a curse. It is, therefore, difficult for people to immediately decide what to do when a person is suffering from mental illness because of the myth surrounding it. So instead of reporting mental illness to the hospital, people prefer to take them to faith healers or temples and shrine to seek spiritual healing. Cases such as these are widely reported and covered by countless media and journalists, in a manner some find exaggerated, and some i nformative. “Living in with mental illness is never easy no matter where in the world you live. But it can be particularly hard in India” Even though some seek treatment where the conditions are conducive towards recovery, as many as 60% of those cases are left abandoned or have no place to go and around 48% of the cases go unreported. These patients then find it difficult to fend for themselves after recovery and are therefore reluctant to leave the hospital environment. This has therefore resulted in overcrowding in the psychiatric hospitals. One such example of these cases is currently prevailing in Thane Mental Hospital. The goal of this proposed psychiatric rehabilitation center is to help patients to develop the emotional, social, vocational and intellectual skills needed to live, learn and work in the community with the least amount of professional help. With the current mental health care bill in process of being passed by the Rajya Sabha, the decentralization of mental health services can be realized by providing the proposed model of the psychiatric rehabilitation center. This would not only help reduce the burden of housing patients that have recovered in the psychiatric hospitals, the patients would also find themselves able to fit well and play their role in the society. As far as the stigma is concerned for the phase involved after the rehabilitation, negligence or discrimination would have been the case once or may still be prevailing in the rural parts in this heterogeneous country. But with the rapidly urbanizing cities and the fast paced lifestyle, the urban society has a rather open-ended view of the issue and stigma related to mental illness. That is to say, change can be bought with persistent development in research and awareness of the society.
