Designing for Industry

Non Literal Form focus on product semantics, detail and creating exciting tactile forms. The telescopic feature was suggested by the series of rings when the object is seen from above. The eye piece’s lip indicated it needed to be pulled upwards. The hole is concave, guiding the user to look in and see their surrounding through an orange filter. I wanted them to experience something new.

The Accidental Hero

Final Major Project yr.1 Focus on designing a medical device to reduce post -operative depression in children. ADE is a soft toy that children recieve when they visit hospital for an operation. He is a tool to allow nursing staff to identify if the child is hiding their anxiety.

Children project their emotions onto soft toys. Ade can indicate how the child is feeling.

The doll is heavy, which has a calming effect on young people.

His cape can be flipped over his head and become a hospital robe.

His comicbook illustrates how even the most super of us get injured. The box allows the patient to read the comic with one hand.

Bayer Innovation in Plastics Competition focus on designing a necklace celebrating the value of plastic and making it accessible to people with poor dexterity. Gratia is a range of necklaces celebrating the value of plastic. Each central gem is made from two tones of injection molded ABS. Within these parts are magnets that act as a clasp mechanism making the product very accessible to people with artheritis, enabling them to continue to beautify themselves. The framework of the pendant is 18K Gold Plated and I used a Reflection Control Acrylic to give the illusion that the central ‘stone’ is hovering. I gained an understanding of materials, costings, the making process and enhanced my presentation skills.

Functionality

Pendant Variations

Live Project Focus on creating a new range of portable speakers for a target market and increase brand exposure. Our aim was to design three portable speaker systems that would sit comfortably in the B&W consumer product range. The team chose to introduce a clear theme spanning our designs. We wished to make tactile, compact and wireless systems for the young professional. The company also wanted us to redesign the packaging to better reflect the exclusivity and high-quality the brand is so renound for. I learnt the importance of contextualising, refined my verbal and graphic presentation, manage work effectively in a team and let go of ideas in search of better ones!
