Demand extends health care sign-up deadline to today
There’s still a chance to sign up for health insurance. The federal government has decided to extend the deadline to sign up to midnight tonight, citing unprecedented demand and a large volume of enrolment for health care through the federal marketplace. Hundreds of thousands have already selected plans over the last two days, and about 1 million consumers have left their contact information to hold their place in line,� said Shelby Venson-Smith, press officer for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which is tasked with running the federal marketplace. “Our goal is to provide access to affordable coverage, and the additional 48 hours will give consumers an opportunity to come back and complete their enrollment for Jan. 1 coverage,� Venson-Smith said.
The deadline to enroll for coverage in 2016 was Tuesday, but call centers were overwhelmed at the number of calls and many were unable to sign up for healthcare insurance in time to avoid the increased penalties for 2016.
