4 CHINESE EXPORTS TO INDIA: TRENDS AND ANALYSIS
MODULE 1 CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION General Introduction: 1.1 Global Scenario: 1.1.1 International Monetary Fund (IMF) in its World Economic Outlook, September 2007, stated that the global economy grew strongly in the first half of 2007, although turbulence in financial markets has clouded prospects. While the 2007 forecast has been little affected, the baseline projection for 2008 global growth has been projected at 4.75 percent, supported by generally sound fundamentals and strong momentum in emerging market economics. Risks to the outlook, however, are firmly on the downside, centered around the concern that financial market strains could deepen and trigger a more pronounced global slow down. Additional risks to the outlook include potential inflation pressures, volatile oil markets, and the impact on emerging markets of strong foreign exchange inflows.
1.1.2 Global Economic Environment: The global economy continued to expand vigorously in the first half of 2007, with growth running above 5 percent. China’s economy gained further momentum, growing by 11 ½ percent, while India continued to grow at more than 9 percent and Russia at almost 8 percent. These three countries alone have accounted for one-half of global growth over the past year. Robust expansions also continued in other emerging market and developing countries, including low-income countries in Africa. Among the advanced economies, growth in the euro area and Japan slowed in the second quarter of 2007 after two quarters of strong gains. In the United States, growth averaged 2-1/4 percent in the first half of 2007 as the housing downturn continued to apply considerable drag and real GDP growth is expected to slow down from the fourth quarter of 2007 onwards. In emerging market and developing countries, growth is expected to remain strong across all regions; albeit at a somewhat more moderate pace than the brisk growth we have seen over the past two years. It is expected China and India will be the two largest contributors to global growth. China is expected to grow by more than 11 percent, while India is expected to grow by 9 percent. Growth may moderate across emerging Asia in 2008, reflecting slower trade growth as well as some policy tightening in countries facing overheating pressures. 1.2 WORLD’s MERCHANDISE EXPORTS & IMPORTS: 1.2.1
5 CHINESE EXPORTS TO INDIA: TRENDS AND ANALYSIS
In 2006, the volume of world merchandise trade grew by 13 per cent while world gross domestic product recorded a 5.4 per cent increase. This confirms the trend of world merchandise trade growing by twice the annual growth rate of output since 2000. 1.2.2 The strong 2006 increase in the volume of merchandise trade is backed by a robust recovery of European exports, which increased by 8.6 percentage points to 12.9 per cent. The real merchandise exports of the United States grew at 11 per cent, and China’s trade expanded by 27 per cent. South and Central America and the Caribbean recorded a growth rate of 21 percent, the Commonwealth of Independent States (25 per cent), and Africa (21 per cent). Exports of the Middle East also grew by 19 percent during 2006.

MODULE:2 TEXTILES CHAPTER:5 YARN
YARN 5.1INTRODUCTION : PRODUCTION OF YARN The production of man-made fibre during 2007-08 amount to 1244.17 million kg.As compared to 1139.47 million kgs during 2006-07 constituting an increase of 9.19%. The production of man-made filament yarn amounted to 1509.34 million kg. In comparison to 1370.48 million kg. In the previous year constituting a increase of 10.13%. The percentage increase / decrease of nylon filament yarn, polyester filament yarn and poloypropylene filament yarn during the period were (-) 14.36%, 11.75% and (-) 21.39%. In 2005, spun yarn market size was around Rs 35000 crore with total production of 3100 million kgs. Out of which, cotton yarn had 69% market share in terms of value, blended (cotton and non cotton fiber) yarn had 19% market share in terms of value. So, total share of cotton and cotton-blended yarn was 88%. 100% non-cotton yarn market was very low having market share just 12%. General Characteristics 8 CHINESE EXPORTS TO INDIA: TRENDS AND ANALYSIS
Cotton Yarn is manufactured by processing cotton fiber. India produces yarn of wide range of counts (a measure of linear density), which varies from 2 to 120 and mainly dominated by cotton made yarn. Global Scenario •
Spun yarns are used worldwide in a wide range of textiles, apparel and other manufactured products. With a total output of 28 million tons, spun yarns satisfy more than half the needs of the global textile and clothing industry.
•
Spun yarn market is growing well. Between 2000 and 2010 the demand for spun yarns worldwide is forecast to rise by almost 25%.
•
Growth will not be evenly spread. Spinning capacity is increasingly shifting towards developing economies as investors install new machinery in lower cost regions. Asian countries in particular stand to benefit the most in the medium term.
•
In developed and newly industrialized countries, spinners are highly vulnerable to growing imports of "downstream" textiles and apparel. Spinners also face growing competition from filament yarns and nonwovens.
•
Major players in textile are China, India, Pakistan, USA, Turkey, Japan, Indonesia, Brazil, Egypt, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Israel, European Union and Mauritius.
Indian Scenario •
The Textile and Clothing Industry is the largest and prominent sector in Indian economy in terms of manufacturing, foreign exchange earnings and employment generation.
•
In 2005, spun yarn market size was around Rs 35000 crore with total production of 3100 million kgs. Out of which, cotton yarn had 69% market share in terms of value, blended (cotton and non cotton fiber) yarn had 19% market share in terms of value. So, total share of cotton and cotton-blended yarn was 88%. 100% non-cotton yarn market was very low having market share just 12%.
•
Cotton yarn is one of the biggest export commodity having total export of around 450 million Kg in 2005, in terms of value, it was around 6000 crore.
•
India is also biggest yarn exporter in world having global yarn export market share of 17%. India mainly exports to China, Korea Republic, Bangladesh, Egypt, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Turkey, Japan, Israel, European Union and Mauritius.

6.4 FORECAST FORECAST TO INDIA’S MAIN TEXTILE DEMAND COTTON INDUSTRY At present, India’s cotton consumption is 25.4 million packs. While its production capacity is 19.5 million packs. Indian cotton scientists estimate that the 19 CHINESE EXPORTS TO INDIA: TRENDS AND ANALYSIS
cotton industry’s demand will be 32 million packs in 2010. To finish this goal, it doesn’t need to increase cultivated area and cut down cost. In 2005-06, the output of cotton yarn was 2.462 million tons. It’s predicted that output of India’s cotton yarn will maintain rising trend. The output of cotton yarn of IS-40S will be increased sharply. In 2009-2010 the output will reach 4.24 million tons totally, IS-40S accounting for 90%, reaching 3.67 million tons. SILK INDUSTRY In 2007, the output of ordinary mulberry silk in India was 16000 tons and it is predicted by Indian silk dept. it would reach to 24000 tons by 2010. CHEMICAL FIBER INDUSTRY Consumption of chemical fiber in India is 1.5 kg., while the average consumption of the world is 3.5 kg. In the view of emergence of Indian middle class, the application of chemical fiber will permeate into non-fiber field constantly. So Indian domestic consumption has a large room for development. It is predicted that India’s domestic demands will increase 14% per year to 12.5 million tons in 2010. The increase mainly impelled by the demands of polyolefin. Polymer’s total demand is hopeful to increase to 4.26 million tons in 2010 from 48,000 tons in 2000 at 14% per year.

CHAPTER 8 :SYNTHETIC & ANIMAL TEXTILE MATERIALS 8.1 INTRODUCTION The synthetic textile materials in India mainly comprises of fiber and filament yarn of cellulosic and non cellulosic origin. The cellulosic fiber/yarn industry is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Textiles while the non cellulosic industry is under the control of Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers (department of chemicals and petro chemicals). Consumption of synthetic fiber in India is 1.5 kg per head, while the average synthetic fiber consumption of the world is 3.5 kilograms. Indian man-made fiber focuses on domestic demand. This situation sharply differs from textile industries in China, Korea and Taiwan In view of the emergence of the middle class, the application of synthetic fiber will permeate into other textile field constantly. So Indian domestic consumption has a large room for development. Fur and hides find their main use today as clothing, particularly coats. They are valued for their warmth, and as a status symbol. Hides are skins obtained from animals for human use. Examples of animal hide sources are deer and cattle typically used for producing leather, alligator skins, snake skins for shoes and fashion accessories and wild cats, minks and bears, whose skins are primarily sought for their fur. In India leather is produced from cattle hides at home/ small scale but most leather making is done on a large scale. The leather industry and the fur industry are distinct industries that are differentiated by the importance of their raw materials. In the leather industry the raw materials are by-products of the meat industry, with the meat having higher value than the skin. The fur industry uses raw materials that are higher in value than the meat and hence the meat is classified as a by-product. Fur and hides find their main use today as clothing, particularly coats.

Indian government also reduces the basic duty of PX from 10% to 5%, all the spun and other filament yarns’ duty from 16 to 12%. Budget 2003-04 announces to cut down the chemical product duty, so some Indian companies’ cost of polymer imported and other chemical products will fall down a little. The budget also plans to reduce the duty of polyester filament from 32 to 24% to support the development of domestic polyester industry. The production of man-made fiber during April-October, 2004 showed an increase of 15% as compared to the corresponding previous period (April-October, 2003). The total man made production is expected to increase by about 115 during 2004-05 as compared to the production in 2003-04.the production of viscose staple fiber, polyester staple fiber, acrylic staple fiber and polypropylene staple fiber is expected to increase by 10%, 11%, and 9% respectively during 2004-05. The total production of man-made filament yarn also increased by around 7.52% during AprilOctober,2004 as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. However the production of polypropylene filament yarn declined by21% during the period. The total filament yarn production during 2004-05 is expected to increase by about 3% as compared to the production during the last period Exports of synthetic and rayon textiles touched an all-time high of Rs 10,227 crore in 2005-06, a growth of nearly 6 per cent over the previous year. The industry is now eyeing Rs 27,000 crore export revenue in four years. The export target set by Synthetic & Rayon Textiles Export Promotion Council (SRTEPC) is in line with the buyers’ increased attention to India for sourcing synthetic fiber textiles since the removal of quota in January last year.
8.2 MARKET POTENTIAL Import: Import of synthetic fiber/filament increased during the last five years but the total import has declined by 25% during 2003-03 as compared to corresponding period of last year, the import of polyester filament yarn constituted about 73% of the total imports during 2003-04. Companies involved in production of leather products are concentrated mainly in the state of Tamil Nadu, Delhi, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
Leather Industry in India, occupies a place of prominence in the Indian economy, in view of its massive potential for employment, growth and exports. There has been increasing emphasis on its planned development, aimed at optimum utilization of available raw materials for maximizing the returns, particularly from exports. Looking at the statistics available on the various websites of trade and commerce in the country, a conclusion can be made that the leather industry in India is strong enough to export leather. Imports from China have decreased in the last few years though china being the biggest exporter of leather in the world. China being the leader in leather manufacturing capturing 64% market share in 2005 has seen a decline on 24% in 2006. The industry is further expected to consolidate for next 2-3 years due to low demands, increasing shipment cost and changing business environment around the world.
Import of leather and hides: Data for the recent imports of leather and hides are not available on the websites providing free access. Data clearly mentioned as for this category is only till 1987 on the website of Reserve bank of India, after which no clear distinction for import of animal textiles is given. MODULE: 3 GARMENTS 9. READY TO WEAR GARMENTS 27 CHINESE EXPORTS TO INDIA: TRENDS AND ANALYSIS
9.1 INTRODUCTION Ready-to-wear has rather different connotations in the spheres of fashion and classic clothing. In the fashion industry, designers produce ready-to-wear clothing intended to be worn without significant alteration, because it is by far the most economical, efficient, and profitable way to produce garments. They use standard patterns, factory equipment, and faster construction techniques to keep costs low, compared to a custom-sewn version of the same item. Some fashion houses or fashion designers create ready-to-wear lines that are mass-produced and industrially manufactured, while others offer lines that are very exclusive and produced only in limited numbers for a limited time. Whatever the quantity produced, these garments are never one-of-a-kind. Haute Couture and Bespoke The antithesis of ready-to-wear is different depending on whether it concerns women's or men's fashion. In women's fashion high end clothing made partly incorporating features requested by the client and to her exact measurements is called haute couture. In menswear, it is usually called bespoke. In menswear, one further distinguishes between made-to-measure (or 'semi-bespoke'), in which a standard pattern is adapted to the customer's measurements, and (full) bespoke, in which a new design is created from scratch for each customer. Savile Row is a famous district in London legendary for its bespoke tailoring. Charvet in Paris is an example[1] of a famous men's bespoke shirtmaker which offers both a high-end ready-to-wear as well as a bespoke service. The top tailors of traditional clothing, such as traditional Savile Row establishments, do not generally diversify, although a few have; in this case, the ready-to-wear clothing is not actually made 'in house', but is a re-branded garment. An example of a firm that has done this is Gieves and Hawkes. Many of the larger establishments, such as Anderson & Sheppard, Henry Poole, or Huntsman will not produce ready-towear clothing, and, at much cheaper rates than the female haute couture houses, are able to attract enough buyers to remain profitable on bespoke clothing alone. A large factor in this decision is a fear of alienating traditional customers, who might see ready-to-wear as tarnishing the reputation of the establishment. Such perceptions are based on issues caused by the lower price, and include problems such as a worse fit, lower quality construction (for example fused canvassing which shortens the garment's life), and using lower quality fabric. In actual fact, keen to avoid such criticisms, houses like Gieves and Hawkes have been careful to sell clothes with traditional cloth and construction wherever possible. In the shoe industry, most bespoke manufacturers do sell ready-to-wear items, but again they are usually not produced by the actual firm, being bought in from the exclusively ready-to-wear manufacturers and rebranded. 28 CHINESE EXPORTS TO INDIA: TRENDS AND ANALYSIS
Fashion houses that produce a women's haute couture line, such as Chanel, Dior, and Lacroix or Torrente by Julien FourniĂŠ, also produce a ready-to-wear line, which returns a greater profit due to the higher volume turnover of garments and greater availability of the clothing. Relative to couture, ready-to-wear clothing is often more practical and informal, though this may not always be the case. The construction of ready-to-wear clothing is also held to different standard than that of haute couture due to its industrial nature. High-end ready-to-wear lines are sometimes based upon a famous gown or pattern that is then duplicated and advertised to raise the visibility of the designer. Collections Ready-to-wear collections are usually presented by fashionable couture houses each season during a period known as Fashion Week. This takes place on a citywide basis (London, New York, Paris, Milan, Los Angeles) and occurs twice a year. Collections for autumn/winter are shown early in the year, usually around February, and spring/summer collections are shown around September. Ready-to-wear fashion weeks occur separately and earlier than those of haute couture. Ready-towear shows do not always feature the actual garments to be sold later in the year. The key word wearability is used in the press and industry to describe how different the designs featured in a show will be from the garments sold in stores.

Explanation: Chinese ready-made garments have clocked a 92 per cent surge in imports into India during the first eleven months of the last fiscal. Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh have moved in to the second slot in key import segments such as cotton yarn and fabrics, readymade garments and home textiles. In case of imports of readymade garments, Chinese imports shot up 91.77 per cent during April-February 2006-07, according to latest Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics figures. Nepal, which incidentally does not have much of a textile industry of its own, came in second to China in terms of total import volumes in this segment, recording a 9 per cent growth during the same period. According to garment industry players, the surge in the imports of finished products such as ready made garments has been egged on by the appreciating rupee, making imports into India more competitive for countries, where currencies have not been hardening as much. China accounted for 28 per cent of total imports into India in the readymade garments segment during the eleven-month period. Nepal’s imports into India, which according to industry insiders is mainly Chinese origin items, accounted for 13.13 per cent of the garments imports.

13. SPORTSWEAR 13.1 INTRODUCTION In broad sense, sportswear can be divided into two categories: one is common sportswear, including outdoor sportswear and indoor workout clothes; the other is specialized sportswear used in specific sports, such as swimwear, jersey, ski suit and racing suit. According to sport event, it can be divided into track suit, ball sports wear, water sports wear, weight lifting suit, wrestling suit, gym suit, ice sports wear, mountaineering suit and fencing suit. •
In the textiles market, sportswear and casual clothes have always enjoyed better performance than other products. They are very popular among consumers, particularly in recent years when people attach more importance to functional products.
•
With the concept of sports and exercises being more readily accepted and further development of new technology and techniques, consumers impose higher technique and function requirements on sportswear and outdoor wear. The development on functional fabrics has enhanced development of functional sportswear. Sportswear in the 21st century will be a combination of function and fashion.
•
Functional sportswear with high technology functions which can protect the human body and improve sport achievement is the inevitable development trend of sportswear.
13.2 MARKET POTENTIAL
Sportswear has been firmly established as a type of casual clothing or `leisurewear' since the 1980s, and this places it within the broader markets for clothing and footwear. In 2008, consumers spent an estimated £3.25bn on sports clothing and £1.28bn on sports footwear. This represents 8% of their total outlay on clothing and 19% of their spending on footwear. •
Although most of the sportswear sold to consumers is bought as leisurewear, and not for playing the sport for which it was originally designed, the inspiration for `sports fashion' nevertheless comes from specific sports and the technical needs of apparel for those sports. A host of sports are involved, grouped broadly into teamsports (e.g. football, rugby), fitness activities (swimming, jogging, working out) and outdoor pursuits. Examples of major markets produced by these activities (whether for `function' or for `fashion') are replica football shirts, tracksuits, running shoes and fleece tops.
31 CHINESE EXPORTS TO INDIA: TRENDS AND ANALYSIS
•
Branding is important for both function (participants seek the correct `performance' items) and fashion in sportswear, and two brands have emerged as global leaders. Nike Inc had global sales of $18.63bn in 2008, operating on such a scale that it was able to design new Nike footwear for every sport at the Beijing Olympics.
THE PROBLEMS OF CHINESE COMPANIES I Low brand recognition and small scale II Low technology content and slow speed of information transfer III Large scale of counterfeit and fakes IV Poor management V Poor social services mechanism
13.3 DUTY STRUCTURE Data is not available
13.4 FORECAST •
In terms of consumer participation, the major trend of the past 20 years has been the move away from sports and towards `pure' fitness activities. Many modern consumers simply do not have the time to commit themselves to playing competitive sports. Instead, private health clubs and the gyms at local leisure centres have become the focus of their fitness activities.
•
The sports market is, in most respects, a fairly mature one, and Key Note forecasts a relatively slow growth rate between 2008 and 2012. Current demographic trends bode well for participation, but little growth is expected in the sports-equipment sector, and sportswear's share of the total clothing and footwear market is shrinking gradually. However, Key Note forecasts a revival in expenditure on spectating, with excitement about the forthcoming London Olympics likely to be a contributing factor.

14.1 INTRODUCTION:
The lingerie market in India is still in its infant stage and, until in recent times, the accessibility of high quality intimate apparel was limited to irregular or grey imports sold under the counter. Because of the limited products and lack of enough specialized and organized retail atmosphere, the fashion realization and quality awareness of the Indian consumer for intimate apparel is yet to be realized. The Indian lingerie Industry is growing because of the increasing domestic demand coupled with huge export potential. It will soon receive an upfront position. From a cottage industry it can be transformed into a growing trade. Indian brands have experienced that they have to be more quality conscious and work harder in branding, promotion, packaging and innovation. Only the mindset to make world class lingerie is lacking. Smaller countries like Sri Lanka, Turkey and Bangladesh are major producers in this segment. Indian companies have recognized the significance of innerwear for men and women and the competition is just boiling as new and more players arrive to offer Indians that much required fashionable lift. It may be shocking that there are 1000 Indian brands in the market but only 200 are nationally active. The others cater to markets in the vicinity of their production. Many of these brands have so far continued the advent of MNC labels for the last decade and should continue to do so. 14.2 MARKET PRODUCT

Growth of the organized retail sector has fueled growth of the lingerie industry as the share of the former has increased from 3% in 2004 to 5.9 percent in 2007 in the Indian market. In India Triumph, Lovable Lingerie, Enamor, VIP, Juliet, Amul etc are major players in lingerie market. Today 70 per cent of the lingerie market of India is unorganized. But that can be replaced with the increase in the number of malls and quality-conscious consumers. For example, Lovable's growth of 20 per cent last year was sustained by new retail space.

The joint market contribution of the leading five retailers in India totals less than two per cent. Though, Lingerie sales have increased by 12 per cent in the past five years because of a new awareness of intimatewear. Women's innerwear industry in India is worth Rs. 2,000 crore and is growing at an average rate of 12 per cent. The Rs.28, 375-crore womenswear apparel segment covers 32.1 percent share of the Indian apparel market in value terms. In volume terms, market share of womenswear is one percent greater than that of menswear but in value terms its share is five percent less than that of menswear due to branded segment in womenswear was practically non-existent till a few years back. At present, it is the most profitable segment for investment. During 2005, volumes increased by 5.5 percent while value appreciation was as high as 15 percent. 14.4. FORECAST: Various industry majors operating in men apparel segment have now started to diversify themselves into women wear in order to exploit the highly lucrative market that was estimated at more than Rs. 37,000 Crore in 2007. The market, in the past five years, posted a growth rate of good 14%. And with the growing presence of organized retail and rapidly spreading mall culture, the industry is all set to grow further in future, according to "Women Wear Market Forecast to 2010, a research report by RNCOS (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/616566/) -Increasing at a CAGR (Compound annual growth rate) of over 17%, women apparel market is expected to cross Rs. 61,000 crore by 2010. -Branded women apparel market is projected to rise at a rate close to 25% and surpass Rs. 18,000 crore by 2010. -Premium segment apparel is forecasted to account for close to 20% of total women apparel market by 2010. -Western wear, along with lingerie, will emerge as the fastest growing segment. In the undergarment market INDIA is projected to increase its international market share by about US$100 million. Given that price points in INDIA is somewhat low, this expected growth shows an opportunity in huge quantity for lingerie companies. Products which shape the body and offer smooth curves are observed as a key growth sector for baby boomer lingerie buyers. New and innovative fabrics like Lycra and microfibers will become a very nice choice for buyers in a coming period.
14.5 CONSUMER BEHAVIOUR Women have been encouraged to buy more lingerie garments, owing to their strong fashion appeal and the fact that underwear (such as camisoles and vests) is often worn as outer wear. Women's emotional relationship with lingerie has also stimulated interest in the sector. Media interest in body shape and the means by which women can boost their self-esteem by regarding their body shape in a positive light has been reflected in increasing lingerie sales.

CHAPTER 16 SLEEPWEAR AND ROBES
16.1 INTRODUCTION
SLEEPWEAR: Nowadays women’s sleepwear is no longer thought of as just the regular nightgown or pajamas, there is such a wide selection of different types of sleepwear, from the classic nightie to camisoles and boy shorts. Women now tend to prefer more comfortable or sensual sleepwear and will choose soft cotton knit for something they can lounge about in and go to bed with. For a sexier look you can pick out the sheer and clingy nightgowns with lace and trimmings. Other types of women’s sleepwear include nightgowns, which can be floor-length or hip-length, as well as full or straight down with slits. They can also have long sleeves or be sleeveless, with the added advantage that they do not feel tight on the waist, as pajamas may tend to feel. Kaftans are also considered as women’s sleepwear and are extremely popular for they often come with a front zip which is practical when you have to slip it on quickly; it is in fact a good item to have when traveling for it is extremely practical. You have a great selection of patterns and bright colors with kaftans, and they also come with embellishments such as embroidery. 38 CHINESE EXPORTS TO INDIA: TRENDS AND ANALYSIS
There is even a special line of sleepwear specifically made for women during menopause, it actually moves night sweat away from your body, thus resulting in a better night in bed. Often, you may find matching nightgowns and robes, which are very elegant and sensual. Nightgowns and robes can cling to your silhouette enhancing your figure and can be much more than just an item of clothing you sleep in. ROBES:
There are a number of women’s robes that are available online as well as offline. They come in a number lot styles and materials. The main objective of the women’s robes is to completely dry you off while keeping you warm at the same time. The women’s robes available can be washed in washing machines. The women’s robes (thick ones) are usually made of towel material and come in a variety of colors. The robes come with or without pockets. There are a number of women’s robes that also come with an option of zipper instead of the normal sash around the waist. The materials that are usually used for the women’s robes are chenille, polyester, micro fiber, poly-cotton, cotton, terrycloth, cashmere, charmeuse, bamboo. The micro fiber robes usually come with terry lining for added support. Robes also come in a variety of colors such as white, pink, blue, prints, greens, and browns and in tan colors. Some of the other embellishments that the robes can carry are the zippers. Some may also have embroidery on the front pockets and on the back, while others may have hoods. The good quality robes for women will usually start at $50 and they can be more expensive, depending on the materials and the use of embellishments on the women’s robes. Another style of the women’s robes is known as the kimono robe and tends to be shorter than the regular bathrobes. They are also available in a variety of materials such as flannel, polyester and can be seen in a variety of prints. The sleeves are slightly different and generously cut. They can be wrapped snugly around the waist. Another type of women’s robes is known as the spa robe. Both men and women use this when they sweating it out in the spa. These spa robes start at $80 but are easily available at discounted prices. They are also available in a number of materials such as Chenille, polyester, micro fiber, poly-cotton, cotton and velour. They are usually simple and are less embellished than the regular bathrobes. The advantage of using chenille is that there is no mildew smell. Another type of women’s robes is known as the wrap. They come in a variety of styles such as velour towel wrap, cotton shower wrap and terry shower wrap. They look like short dresses that

CHAPTER 11: SWEATERS AND KNITWEAR 11.1 INTRODUCTION Wool and Woollen textiles industry is a rural based export oriented industry in which the organized sector, the decentralized sector and the rural sector complement each other. There are 958 woollen units in the country, the majority of which are in the small scale sector. This industry is administered by Central Wool Development Board (CWDB).
11.2 MARKET POTENTIAL Woollen industry in India falls under both organized and decentralized sector. Composite units worsted and non-worsted spinning mills and machine made carpet units compromise the bulk of the organized sector while the hosiery, knitting and carpet and durry making units fall in the decentralized sector. a) Total number of registered units

These objectives are sought to be achieved through the following organizations:(i) (ii)
Central Wool Development Board, Jodhpur Wool Research Association, Thane.

11.4 FORECAST It is predicted that Indian domestic demands will increase 17-20% per year to 125 million kgs in 2010. The demand in woolen ready-made garments is much stronger than that in raw wool. Demand of sweater of knitwear is difficult to predict independently as it changes according to the trends. Projection for the Eleventh five year plan is to increase the domestic production or raw wool by about one and half times of the present level i.e. reach an annual production level of around 75 million kg so as to decrease dependence on imports. 46 CHINESE EXPORTS TO INDIA: TRENDS AND ANALYSIS
Domestic markets are growing but the pace of demand is higher which has helped imports to flourish in the market.

CHAPTER 12: WEDDING WEAR 12.1 INTRODUCTION
A wedding dress or wedding gown is clothing worn by a bride during a wedding ceremony. Color, style and ceremonial importance of the gown depends on the religion and culture of the participants In modern tradition, the color of western-culture wedding dresses is white.( The popularity of this color can be traced back to 1840 and the marriage of Queen Victoria to Albert of SaxeCoburg) Many wedding dresses in China are colored red, the traditional color of good luck. In modern Chinese weddings, particularly in Western countries, the bride usually opts for the white Western dress or changes from a red gown to a white gown later in the day.
12.2 MARKET POTENTIAL
47 CHINESE EXPORTS TO INDIA: TRENDS AND ANALYSIS
Garment companies offer an extensive range of wedding wear items for all men, women, kids, bridegroom, and bride, to suit appropriately the festive occasion, and to make the beautiful bride more enthralling, and even modest looking brides at least splendid to look at. The exclusive wedding wear collection rendered by these industries, is an exquisite blend of ethnic motifs, intricate embroidery and rich silken materials, deep vibrant colors such as vermilion, crimson, pink, orange or magenta. Dazzling and glamorous golden works have been done, to render the bridal attire ornate and magnificent. This collection of various types of bridal wear ranges from sarees to lehenga cholis or sharars and even the bridal gowns. There is a huge market for export of these category of garments from China to India, this could be made out from the number of companies engaged in this business, but no statistical data regarding the growth is available on this websites and the websites from India visited for the various other categories are not useful in providing the required information as the collective information for all kind of garment is given.

CHAPTER 20 FASHION JWELLERY AND EYEWEAR 20.1 INTRODUCTION India is one of the fastest growing markets for jewellery, growing at the rate of 10.20 per cent per annum over the last five years. Today, the Indian consumer market for jewellery is said to be $13.1 billion, an increase of close to 8 per cent over the previous year. A study by KPMG says that India is set to realise total jewellery sales of $21 billion by 2010 and $37 billion by 2015. Currently, out of the eight key world retail markets, the US is number one accounting for 31 per cent of the jewellery sales. India and China follow with 8.3 and 8.9 per cent respectively. For eyewears:
Every third person in India wears glasses. And that translates into a Rs 1,800-crore prescription eye wear market. In early 2007, the prescription eyewear market in India was estimated to be worth between Rs 18-20 billion,1 with around 30 million pieces (frames with glasses) being sold every year2. It was also one of the fastest growing consumer segments in the country in the early 2000s, recording an average annual growth rate of around 25%.3 This segment however, was largely dominated by the unorganized sector, which accounted for 95% of the prescription eyewear business.4 For the foreseeable fashion future, eyewear will emerge as one of the less expensive ways for economical consumers to assert a personal design aesthetic and satisfy the urge for high-end labels. "Eyewear is a huge and increasingly diversified business driven by a host of health, demographic, lifestyle and fashion trends,". "Sunglasses and other types of eyewear have become viable accessories on par with fashion staples such as handbags." The global eyewear market enjoyed a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9% for the 2004-2008 period. However, consumer aversion to copious spending on discretionary products caused the market to decline 2% in 2008 and finish below $64 billion compared to more than $65 billion in 2007, when the market gained 15% over the prior-year period. . Technological innovation is crucial to the advent of new eyewear products that will entice consumers. 20.4 FORECAST For jwellery : According to the KPMG study, India’s growing importance in the global jewellery market is only expected to increase in the future. The total demand is expected to reach $18.25 billion in 2010 and to $ 28.28 billion in 2015. Diamond jewellery consumption in India is estimated to jump by 78 per cent in 2010. India and China together are predicted to emerge as a market equivalent to that of the US by 2015, according to the KPMG report on the global gems and jewellery industry – Vision 2015: Transformation for Growth. The industry can see capital infusion of around $ 10 billion, according to Mr Mehul Choksi, Chairman of the Gitanjali Group. As per forecasts, by the year 2015, the industry will witness a good fragmentation in the jewellery retail business while keeping the area of diamond mining, sourcing, processing within the confines of either niche or mass players, says Mr Ashwin Jacob, Manager at KPMG Advisory Services Pvt. Ltd in India. The future scenarios for the global fashion jewelry industry, based on the recent trends, are that the mining countries will capture a huge share of the polishing sector as well. Substitutes of precious stones such as synthetic diamonds and non-precious metals will replace the precious stones. The plain gold jewelry sales will keep on declining and China and India will emerge as large retail markets. Projected share of industry segments and key consumption marketsProjected share of various jewellery segments(2015)

Based on the above trends the projections for growth of jewelry industry are as follows: •
The growth in sales of the industry as a whole will slow down and the world will notice the emergence of new markets. The global fashion jewelry sales will grow at the rate of 4.6% annually and is estimated to reach US $ 185 billion by 2010 and US $ 230 billion in 2015. China and India together will emerge as equivalent to the US market in 2015.
96 CHINESE EXPORTS TO INDIA: TRENDS AND ANALYSIS
•
Jewelry fabrication services will also show sluggish demand and will move to new centers. The CAGR of global fashion jewelry fabrication is estimated to be 5.1% by 2015. China and India will be the new centers for jewelry fabrication.
Figure 4: Projected global fashion jewelry sales (2010,2015), USD billion •
Lowering margins in profit and debt levels in the industry will help to build up the fashion jewelry industry.
•
By the year 2015, the fashion jewelry industry will witness the emergence of a number of giant markets, which will be the industry leaders of the future.
The future of fashion jewelry industry lies in the developing countries and primarily China and India. The African countries producing raw materials will also benefit from the expansion of these markets. Thus on the whole the future for the industry is bright but still certain steps need to be taken by the key players to increase supply of raw materials and reform the supply chain.
For eyewears : It forecasts the global eyewear market will rebound by 2010 and grow at a CAGR of 1.4% to exceed $68 billion by 2013. A full return to normalized annual growth rates of between 3% and 6% are forecast to begin during the latter half of the 2008-2013 period.
