SOMETHING ABOUT ME Something about me is a series of four illustrations that revolve around the choice I made.

#SOMETHINGABOUTME

THE CHOICE It was 30th April 2014, and I had just fiished an illustration for my college(JSS) newsletter. The theme was farewell in which I captured all the fields of engineering. The illustration ends with the drawing of an arrow splitting into two i.e. two “obvious paths all students will have after they graduate. Work or study further. Little did I know that I would later find myself in the shoes of the little guy on the right bottom corner of the illustration, wondering what to do in life.

#THECHOICE (1/3)

THAT’S NOT THE SHAPE OF

MY HEART Months passed by and I graduated. I was a B.tech in Mechanical Engineering. I had decided at the beginning of my final year that engineering was definitely not it. I also had a job offer in hand. Question was whether I should take up that job or pursue design. Kill my creative self and take up a mundane job ?

#THECHOICE(2/3)

MY MIND Eventually I chose Design, much to my Dad’s disapproval. Fortunately for me he came in terms with my decision and was on the same page as me, supporting me. The real challenge that time, however was to actually get into that dream course. Many times in life, taking that first step is all it takes to bring about a change, be it in the world or within ourselves. For it reveals two simple truths. One, only you know the courage it took to make that choice and that nobody can take it away from you. Two, this is only the beginning. The latter stands true at any given point of time in life. Whether we are at the foundation of creating and moulding our lives or at the peak of it. Because a choice, any choice comes with consequences. While we are free to make our choices, we are not free to choose the consequences that come along. The best we can do and must do is to adapt and deal with them and rise above them. I was unaware of the journey when I chose to pursue art and design. My mindset had to change completely. Till then I was dealing with numbers, calculations, fixed set of rules and formulae, etc. but now I had to start thinking differently. Deal with shapes, emotions, perceptions, abstract concepts and so on with no guidance whatsoever. I had to reset my mind, develop skills, get used to the process of design, learn to execute and realize my ideas and most importantly I had to evolve into a better version of myself. I had to see myself as my own competition, I still do. I had to prepare myself for the kind of life I was asking for and it was tough, it still is. Two years of struggle, reinvention, failures, discouragement, derision, isolation and more failures. There were times when I questioned my decisions but all of this has taught me what I could never learn in any other way. I had to go through that process to be where I am today.

#THECHOICE(3/3)

MY SOUL And it all led me to Italy, but once again it only seemed like a beginning. There were bigger challenges ahead. I realized that one has to evolve into a designer and then as a designer, and its not easy. I have had critiques that shattered the very foundation of my convictions. Failed many times but got back up every single time. I was in a slump every now and then but I came out of each one as a new person. Going through failures taught me that every problem has a solution, there may be only one solution but there is a way out! And until I find THAT way out I have to let myself explore the possibilities. For I have to be right only once! What happened was every time I overcame a challenge, however small or big, I revealed, layer by layer, my truest self within. Meaning, I found myself. I began to trust my intuitions more, believe in my strengths more and most of all my faith in God is increased sevenfold. Once you put your heart, mind and soul into something, you work hard. And the harder you work, the harder it is to give up. I am mindful of my weaknesses and try to conquer one at a time as I move closer to being the person I want to be. I know there will be hurdles ahead but I also know that every hurdle is an opportunity. And Whitney M. Young, jr. said - “It is better to be prepared for an opportunity and not have one than to have an opportunity and not be prepared. The choice for me was not about choosing a career its about being who I want to be.

In the creative domain, I have come across so many people who steal I deas. Often it so happens that this person(predator) steals and implements your idea before you do and takes all the credit. In the end you’re left with nothing. So I decided to use this as an inpiration for a eries of Illustrations.
