BUFA’S GARDEN IS JUST THE START OF WHAT THEY’RE BUILDING

It all started in 2015 when a group of twelve civicminded individuals came together with a desire to grow enough local, pesticide-free produce to share with their community. At the time, they started by first serving themselves and growing their own food at Boggs Track Community Farm. It wasn’t long before they outgrew their 20x20 plot and were in search of more land. The stars aligned when a generous land owner by the name of Kitty Brown offered the group to farm on her land in French Camp for $1 per year. This opened the door for a larger garden and the opportunity to grow enough produce to feed more than just themselves.

Fast forward to today, the garden is now the foundation of an impactful nonprofit called Black

Urban Farmers

Association, or BUFA. The association is inspired by the history of black farmers in the United States and the impact they made and continue to make on the availability of healthy foods. “I’ve believed in what BUFA could do for people, especially African American people, from its beginning,” says Reatha Hardy-Jordan, co-founder and director of the association. “I am very passionate about helping others, and I believe that is exactly what BUFA has allowed me to do. Food, the right food, matters.”

BUFA is focusing its efforts on providing its produce at an affordable cost to corner market shoppers in South Stockton that wouldn’t otherwise have access to locally grown, pesticidefree produce. The organization also has plans to donate produce to community partners in Stockton.

The heart of BUFA, however, is about growing more than a garden; it’s about growing a community that notices the needs of those around

them and isn’t afraid to get their hands dirty in an effort to meet those needs. Volunteers at the farm not only learn about how pesticide-free produce is grown, they also get to take some home. “I love to see people come out, and experience what it feels like to give back,” says Reatha. “When you volunteer on the farm, you become a part of a community that really cares about health and hunger.”

To further encourage farming in Stockton, The City of Stockton’s Economic Development Department has created a grant to support urban farmers and food entrepreneurs in the community. The City received the additional grant funding being used for this program from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Community Development Block Grant CARES (CDBGCV3) in response to the effects of COVID-19. The City considers this grant crucial to sustaining the community’s food industry, while increasing neighborhood access to locally grown, affordable foods.

Combine your wine lust with a love of the coast—this particular area of Sonoma County offers rugged bluffs ascending from the ocean, seemingly bottomless glasses of chardonnay and pinot noir, and the best digs for a night tucked into bed, the sounds emanating from vintage records lulling you to sleep.

First things first, when you come for wine, this becomes the most important item on the itinerary. Jenner, Calif. is home to one tasting room dubbed Fort Ross Vineyard Tasting Room. Off a country road about two miles from the highway, the building proffers scenic views from a modern, wood cabin-esque estate. Come in Friday through Tuesday and sip as you overlook the Pacific Ocean, floating above the coastal fog and surrounded by green meadows and forests that glisten with dew drops in winter months. The rest of your evening is best spent at Timber Cove Resort, a stunning, modern lodge perched on the tip of the peninsula, with views of the ocean from outdoor table tennis and pool tables perfect for playing with friends or challenging your significant other to a round. Inside, the play continues with a large collection of board games to enjoy by the fire over a bottle—or glass—of wine. A roaring fire heats the lodge in colder months while Bubba the bartender whips up cocktails and pours local vino. On Wednesdays live music is your soundtrack.

When you’re ready for food, eat on site—but be warned an advance reservation may be needed (and if you don’t secure one there aren’t a lot of other options for dinner nearby). The fine dining establishment dubbed Coast Kitchen offers a smattering of delicacies from chicken to fresh seafood. The menu rotates so we can’t promise what will be there in January, but regardless of the specifics, the fare will be delicious and cooked to perfection. Whatever you do, don’t skip dessert.

Before you retire to your room—many of which boast stunning views of the pristine coastline—grab a handful of records from the lobby. Rentals are free and you can take as many as you like. The only stipulation is you return them before you leave. From the balcony, watch sunset or sunrise, or skip downstairs to enjoy the view over the communal firepit.

Within city limits—a little over an hour from Jenner—Sonoma County is alive with wine experiences to fill your time and your wine cabinet. With a more casual feel than the other side of the hill, Sonoma serves up wine just as delicious as the Napa Valley but with experiences that feel more accessible to some. Showcasing only the region’s best, Landmark delights with a line-up of pinot noirs and chardonnays. You’ll enjoy five sips while taking in views of the Mayacamas Mountains from the Kenwood Estate’s gardens. On the tour you’ll be pulled by a tractor and regaled with the humor or Dr. Bob or another tour guide before settling into the tasting room for a few more sips. If you’re open to an interactive experience, we recommend a stop at Meadowcroft Wines. Situated on the old grounds of Sunset Magazine, Meadowcroft is part of a sprawling estate offering up picture-perfect backdrops ideal for photo shoots, restaurants, shopping, and more. The blending experience here is a full-blown wine education, teaching you while also testing your senses. When you’re ready to walk off all of those calories, head to Jack London State Park. Open to hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders, and bird watchers, we recommend taking a quick trip down to the Wolf House ruins for a quick history lesson. About one mile in total, it’s not a hard trek, and a quick detour will also take you to the author Jack London’s gravesite as well as the graves of two young children who once lived on the property. While wine and food is important, where to stay is one of the first considerations of any trip. And let’s just say, Sonoma isn’t short on options. The Sonoma Lodge mentioned above is one of the best options in the city, but the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa is another worthy choice. Come here if you’re a fan of spas, where outdoor pools are heated above 80 degrees and you can switch between hot springs with just a day pass. Order appetizers as you lounge before retreating to your room, which feels like an oasis of its own. When it comes to food, we recommend not skipping a chance to dine at Girl & The Fig. The downtown restaurant serves "country food with a French passion.” Inside it’s a city feel, buzzing with energy in the heart of downtown Sonoma. Another meal-not-to-miss is at The Lodge at Sonoma Resort. Michael Mina’s creation—Wit & Wisdom— offers high-end and hearty dining to end your evening, perfect after a long day of wine tasting (and even better if you’re staying on site at the gorgeous property complete with a spa and well-appointed rooms with private patios). One of the best items on the menu is the savory “pop tart,” a braised short rib wrapped inside of a flaky pastry crust and served with a horseradish cream au poivre. If you’re looking for a quick bite, Les Pascals Patisserie, a French bakery serving up meringue and croque monsiuers is the perfect stopover (just down the hill from Jack London State Park and Benziger Family Winery). Not everyone would jump at the chance to complete a vodka tasting, but we definitely recommend giving it a try while in Sonoma. Hanson of Sonoma Distillery serves flavorful organic, grape-based, gluten-free. and non-GMO vodka to guests and also mixes up cocktails with the ingredients. Start by sipping through flavors like grapefruit, habanero, and cucumber (alcoholic spa water) before ordering a few fun mixes to enjoy with lunch. One thing is for sure, if it’s warm weather and wine you seek, heading south is the key. Solvang is a cute little Danish-inspired town dripping in cabernet. And if you’re looking to wet your whistle while also feeling like you’ve been transported to another continent, here’s the space to do it.

For breakfast, anything other than brekkies by CHOMP won’t do. CHOMP is a local spot famous for its burgers, and brekkies is its late morning (or early afternoon) concept, offering both American and Mexican breakfast dishes (plus mimosas). The menu feels endless with hearty options like chicken and waffles and biscuits and gravy. For lighter bites, brekkie toast is where it’s at—choose from California Avocado, Nutella, and Almond Butter. Before you leave you MUST stop by the local bakeries and candy shops to gorge on Danish sweets and treats. The line can get long and the pastry cases are stacked so it’s hard to pick just one thing to go home with. Do yourself a favor and load up for later. Brunchin’ with Ignis Provisions

Your ultimate excuse to indulge in a Sunday Funday is here—look no further than brunch with Ignis Provisions. The husband-and-wife duo of Daniel and Bri Cortez are serving up a brilliant brunch at Riaza Winery in Lodi, and you do not want to miss these perfectly plated provisions.

This surefire pairing of two talented chefs and a wellestablished Lodi winery results in a boozy brunch to get excited about. Just think—pork belly bowls and tempranillo as a drool-worthy combination.

The partnership started slow but has taken off. After providing food for several Riaza winery events, the pair approached winery owners, Rick and Erin Taylor, about the possibility of pulling up the Ignis Provisions trailer on Sundays for brunch. What began as a gracious opportunity has blossomed into a fortuitous relationship for both parties. After all, what is better than an evolving, eclectic brunch menu paired with local wines?

“The Riaza family has been our biggest fan/supporter since the very beginning when we were just working off of a tiny little grill,” said Bri Cortez. “We couldn't be more thankful to them.”

Daniel and Bri’s history, however, predates their Ignis business venture. It began when the two met at work five years ago. Bri and Daniel both attended Cordon Bleu in Sacramento where they grinded their way up the ranks of kitchens in Napa, Sonoma, and Lodi’s Wine countries. When the world shut down in the spring of 2020, the couple decided to take a leap of faith. They began Ignis

Provisions during the pandemic to provide for their family with the flexibility of working for themselves.

Ignis Provisions is an ode to the roots of their combined passion for the art of cooking. The name derives from the Latin word for fire and the primal necessity of cooking. They use live fire as much as possible in their cuisine, whether they are smoking, grilling, or whipping up a table-side presentation.

IP’s brunch menu is as eclectic as California cuisine. On any given weekend you might find Thai-, Mexican-, or even Japaneseinspired dishes, and on others, you can savor reinvented classics. Take, for example, their in-house French toast crafted from bread pudding pressed for 24 hours. Sometimes they throw down lamb and eggs, lox flatbread, and even a spicy shrimp po’boy, all delectable rifts on classic recipes. On a recent visit to Riaza Winery, the Cortezs pumped out satisfying hand-made tater tots, molded and dipped in the fryer before getting served on a bed of piping hot queso. The dish is garnished with pickled onions and microgreens, resulting in the best hearty hangover grub. But one of the team’s all-time favorites is the rabbit posole. “We like to get adventurous with proteins in a way that’s familiar enough that guests will try something new,” Cortez says. “So far it’s worked well for us!”

While many people couldn’t imagine working day in and day out with their spouse, it’s something that comes naturally to Bri and Daniel. “We honestly love working together. We met at work, so we've never known a life outside of being coworkers.” Cortez says. “Five years later and we are pretty in sync. Not only do we get to spend time together, but we also get to share our passion project.”
