BY NORA HESTON TARTE / D AMERICAN CRUSE LINES

Have you ever wanted to explore California by way of the water? With the first overnight cruise ship since Sacramento’s Delta King, adventurists are in for a treat! American Cruise Lines’ is launching its Delta-bound excursion in February 2023 with a Northern California route that explores Sacramento, Stockton, San Francisco, and Napa Valley.

But not all of the fun is had on the water. While the American Jazz will float down the Delta waterways, many of the excursions take place on land including a guided tour of Old Sacramento and a NASCAR-style outing at the Stockton 99 Speedway. There are plans to bring in more attractions in Stockton including winery and museum visits.

The price point is high. Tickets start at $6,000 and can reach above $11,000 for the eight-day, seven-night trek. For all of that, you’ll enjoy outings in major Northern California cities plus plenty of leisure time and overnight accommodations on the boat, and the American Jazz is full of modern amenities that help the price make sense. Every state room includes a sleeping area, living area, full-size bathroom, and seating options. Plus, the vessel itself dons a fivestory glass atrium, private balconies in all of its staterooms, and spectacular views from every point of the ship.

When it’s not in Northern California, the ship is sailing down the Mississippi, into the port of New Orleans, or headed for Music City. 2020 – year inaugurated 190 – total guest capacity 99 – number of rooms
