Writer’s Residence Semester - II Site Location - Charodi, Ahmedabad, Gujarat Structure - Timber Frame Structure Faculty - Sanal Thathapuzha, Sneha Ramani The aim of the studio was to read a book and design a residence for the author. The book I read was Seven Summers by Mulk Raj Anand. He was a journalist, script writer for World War II and he supported freedom all over the world. He was friends with many freedom fighters and actively took part in Indian Independence Movement. He lived a very basic and minimal life. So, while designing i kept these things in my mind and inculcated more open spaces such as verandahs and courtyard. The main idea was to make the residence welcoming and open as the author himself had empathy towards people and was keen in interacting with people and helping them out. In this semester, we were asked to use timber as a structure. The vernacular architecture of Ahmedabad mostly comprises of Timber. Responding to the hot and dry climate of Ahmedabad, spaces are arranged such that it creates courtyard in between and on the south side there is a deep verandah which protects the house from the direct and harsh sunlight.

Reader’s cafe Semester - III Site Location - Nirma University , Ahmedabad, Gujarat Material - Stone and steel Faculty - Viral Bhavsar, Falguni Goghari, Manisha Basu The aim of the studio was to create a space which offers knowledge as well as entertainment. So, I thought of creating a reading cafe as books are the greatest source of knowledge and a small cafeteria and an open amphiteater along with it would create an ambience. We had to chose two materials and stick upon them through the whole design. I chose stone and steel. The walls are made of stone nad the roof is made of steel and the landscaping again is done with the stones. I’ve also tried to inculcate the playfulness in the design by play of levels and heights. The reading area is one the upper floors so that its free from the cafeteria noises and the ground floor serves as the purpose of entertainment as it comprises of cafeteria and the cafeteria further leads to the amphitheater where small gigs could happen.

GROUND FLOOR PLAN The upper level comprises of wide steps so that people can just grab a book and sit informally on the steps and have discussions over books. The main idea was to create a space which is social for knowledge exchange and interaction and also quiet where one can find their own zone to contemplate i.e., has levels of remoteness and togetherness. And as the site is full of lush green trees thereby the large openings and open sitting areas provides connection with the nature.

Housing Studio Semester - IV Site Location -Vadodara, Gujarat Structure - Frame Structure Site area Guided by - Jitendra Meghnani, Foram Bhavsar, Falguni Goghari, Imran Khan The aim of the studio was to design affordable housing for economically weaker and middle income section in the development of housing in high density low rise urban environment in Vadodara. The colony is mainly a low- rise residential area with having Khanderao Market on the North peripher, lined up with the commercial and mixeduse buildin. The road passing by site remains choked by traffic. So, I’ve tried to keep the residential and commercial separated from each other. The housing scheme proposed here has 120 houses which has s private terraces or balconies for each house which ensiure visual connection with the neighborhood.

Baroda is located in hot and humid climate of Gujarat. One of the way to reduce the heat load is to provide roof gardens. Terraces that result from stacking of blocks can be used to provide green outdoor space.

Institution Studio Semester - V Site Location - Nirma University, Ahmedabad Structure - RCC Frame Structure Guided by - Sanal Thathapuzha, Sneha Ramani, Ashish Tiwari, Dhaval Chauhan The aim of this studio was to design an undergraduate architecture school for Nirma University. The site also has a lake, so i decided to orient the school towards the lake and placing all the active places such as studios, canteen and exhibition space facing the lake. In this studio we first set the curriculum of the school and accordingly moved forward towards the design. The whole idea was to make a fluid space with plenty of semi open and open areas and creating different sizes of niches for interaction to happen. The deck on the ground floor and the terrace garden on first floor becomes the informal extension of studios and studios doesn’t limit into an enclosed space. Different exercises such as memory lane, collage representation of ideas, conceptual model making, curriculum development, reprogramming the school etc. took place to come to the final design.

The left collage shows how the architectural education should be and how freedom, social interaction and creativity are important parts of the program. The right collage shows the central active core space and how the other spaces are surrounded by it and finally becomes the part of the court itself.The lake separates the rigid structure of University from the fluid nature of school. The bottom montage shows the flow of activities from the court to the studios and then to the lake.
