An Overview of Oculoplastic Surgery Oculoplastics includes advanced training in ophthalmology and specialization in reconstructive and plastic surgery. Oculoplastic surgery is conducted on adults and children to treat disorders of eyelids, lacrimal system, tear production, brows, bones around the eye and the face adjacent to the eye. Let us discuss some of the common conditions treated by oculoplastic surgery are : Eyelid Abnormalities There are numerous eyelid disorders that are congenital or can occur from injuries or aging. For example- ectropin (turning out of the lower lid), entropin (turning in of the lower lid) and ptosis (drooping of the upper lid). Oculoplastic surgery is done to reposition specific muscles and treat these abnormalities. Tear Duct Disorders Tear ducts form an important part of lubrication system of our eye. Tear duct surgery also known as dacryocystorhinostomy or Jones tube placement is done to blockage in the tear duct that can result in excessive watering of eyes. This abnormality occurs due to previous trauma or infection or as a result of aging. Injuries of eye socket, cancers and other problems Oculoplastic surgeons can perform the procedure to correct certain injuries, tumors and other congenital abnormalities of eye socket. Orbital Surgery orbital surgery refers to the procedure performed within the bony portion of the eye socket to remove the tumors or reposition the bones. Orbital decompression is procedure used to correct the protruding eyes resulting due to hyperthyroidism or Graves' disease. In this procedure bony socket is expanded to accommodate swelling and extra tissue deposited behind the eye.
