ormally known as Madras, Chennai is the 350 year old city suited in South India. It is also often called as ‘Chingara Chennai’ which means cute and beautiful in Tamil. Chennai was founded in 1639 when the British East India Company was granted land to build a trading settlement by the Nayak (local ruler) of the suburb of Vandavasi. The city grew up around the English settlement of Fort St. George and gradually absorbed the surrounding towns and villages. However, despite the strong British influence, Chennai has retained its traditional Tamil Hindu culture and effectively blended it with the foreign influence. The city is rich in the treasures of history from temples and shrines to forts and palaces, the landscape of the past lives in harmony with the present. The city is widely spread over an area of 180 sq kms. It is a major trade center, being well linked by road, rail and air to important cities besides being a sea port. Compared to the other major metros of India, it has lesser population as well. Let’s see what the city has to showcase for its visitors.

Historical Monuments/ Museums Fort St. George St. George Fort is located on the banks of Bay of Bengal. It was built by the British East India Company in 1640 AD. The fort is believed to be the first establishment of the British in India. It is said to be a military architecture marvel. St. George Fort holds great historical importance and is looked after by the Archaeological Survey of India. It served as a home away from home for the officials of the East India Company in 17th century. This helped in the development of Chennai city. St. George

Fort has a number of other worth watching monuments within its boundaries. St. Mary’s Church, situated in the fort, is one of the oldest surviving churches built by the British in India. This beautiful building has stood the test of time and still holds the splendor of the yore. The glass windows, wall frescos, teak plaques still shine with their all time glory. Another fascinating structure here is the 150 ft tall flagstaff, made entirely of teakwood. This ancient monument is certainly worth visitin on your trip to Chennai.

Freemasons Hall It is situated in the Egmore area of Chennai. It is a living example of the cultural and traditional heritage of the people who inhabited the ancient city of Madras. Freemasons Hall was constructed by the East India Company, during the colonial rule. Freemasons Hall is one of the finest buildings of Tamil Nadu. The location of the structure is such that it can be easily reached from any corner of the city. Freemasons Hall is a double storey mansion and can accommodate around 200 people at a time. It has been designed with the help of Greek style of engineering. This is clearly visible from the mammoth pillars and the use of Italian tiles and marbles, which adorn the interiors of the hall. The small lodge room on the first floor is capable of accommodating 60 people at a time and is meant for holding Masonic meetings.

The Government Museum of Chennai This is one of the most popular sightseeing spots in the city. It is deemed to be one of the oldest museums of India, as its inception dates back to the colonial rule. There are six independent buildings in the museum’s campus, which constitute 46 galleries. The museum was designed by H. Irvin, the consulting architect

of the Government of Chennai. The Government Museum has a splendid hall, marvelous reading room and striking teak wood shelf and stands divided into a number of sections. These sections include those on Geology, Archeology, Zoology, Anthropology, Numismatics, Botany and Sculpture. Also, there are other four galleries in the museum. They comprise of the Hindu sculpture gallery, Bronze gallery, Amravathi gallery and National Art gallery. Apart from this, the Government Museum also houses a Children’s Museum, which is a special section dedicated exclusively to children.

Senate House Senate House of Chennai is definitely a worth watching monument in Tamil Nadu. It is located at the campus of University of Madras, near the Marina Beach. It is truly an architectural marvel and was constructed under the supervision of one of the greatest architects of the 19th century, Robert Fellowes Chisholm. The foundation of this monument was laid in 1869 and was successfully completed by the year 1873. The Senate House was once the hallmark of the city of Chennai. Its structure is a creative and harmonious blend of Indo-Saracenic style, with Byzantine architectural features. The building is surrounded by four spearing towers, flanked by exquisite domes, painted in different colours. This adds to the magnanimity and splendour of the monument.

War Memorials A visit to the War Memorials is the best way to discover the heroic past of India. These war memorials have been built to pay homage to those great souls who fought for the nation. Some of these War Memorials are located within the boundaries of the city, while some are located at the outskirts. Two most famous and visited memorials in and around Chennai are:

• Victory War Memorial The Victory War Memorial is located to the south of Fort St. George. This memorial is also known as ‘Cupid’s Bow’. A circular rock and marble structure have been built here, in the memory of those who sacrificed and lost their lives for the country’s honour, during World War I. It is situated on Beach Road of Chennai, near Island Grounds.

• Rajiv Gandhi Memorial It is located at a distance of about 40 km from the main city. The memorial is precisely situated at Sriperumbudur and is dedicated to the former Prime Minster of India, Raiiv Gandhi.

Valluvar Kottam This is a monument built to pay homage to famous Tamil Poet Saint Thiruvalluvar. The monument

is in the shape of a temple chariot and contains a lively and splendid statue of the poet. The temple chariot is a replica of the one at Thiruvar. Thiruvalluvar’s significant contribution to Tamil literature is in the form of Thirukkural. As a tribute, 133 verses from the same literary work have been inscribed at the base of the chariot. Apart from this, there is an auditorium that can accommodate up to 4000 people at a time.

Religious places Thousand Lights Mosque Thousand Lights Mosque is a well-known worship place for the Muslims in the Chennai. It is situated at the Anna Salai Road in the city. The mosque is popular for a number of reasons, such as its architecture, its historical and religious importance. In early 19th century, the place where the mosque presently stands used to be the assembly place of the Shiite Muslims, during the month of Muharram. Later, the assembly hall was built, following which the mosque was constructed. The total area of the land occupied by the Thousand Lights Mosque is 3 acres. There is an interesting story behind the name of the mosque. It is said that 1000 lamps needed to be lit in order to illuminate the assembly hall, thus the name. With a medieval style of architecture it has an exhilarating structure, with multi domes and spearing minarets. The average height of the minarets is around 64 feet above the ground. The mosque is adorned with the quotes from the Quran. There is a main hall at the ground floor to offer prayers for men, while there is a separate room for women. There are two rooms on the second floor which are known as Bargah and represent the sanctuary. Thousand Lights Mosque holds great importance for the Shiite Muslims and is a pilgrimage site for them.

Aarupadaiveedu Temple

There are innumerable temples for the Lord Muruga in Tamil Nadu, but Aarupad-aiveedus literally means six fighting fields, the six highly revered shrines of Lord Muruga, are considered as most important. The deities in these six well known temples show different stages in Lord Murugaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life. It is believed that Lord Muruga showers blessings over the devotees who visit and offer prayers in these six temples. These temples attract lot of people from various places in India and abroad.

This shrine is situated on the shores of Bay of Bengal; at the Elliotâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s beach. This beautiful shrine is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, Mother of God, Annai Velankani. The church is the replica of the Basilica of Our Lady of Health, Velankani. People belonging to all faith and religion gather here for worship. This church attracts lots of people and it is believed that one will get the same blessings in this shrine of Virgin Mary as he gets in Velankani.

Ananthaa Padmanabha Swaamy Temple This is a contemporary temple built in 1962. Anantha Padmanabha, name derived from the words Padma (lotus) and nabha (navel), is depicted to be offering worship to Lord Shiva in the form of Linga. This temple is built on the same model as that of Sri Anantha Padmanabha Swamy Temple at Trivandrum. The inner chamber houses the statue of Lord Vishnu in the form of Anantha Padmanabha as placed in Trivandrum. There are three doors through which one can see the divine head, mighty body and lotus feet of the Lord who is lying on the divine snake Adisesha with its hood caring the Lords head. The right hand is resting and worshipping the Siva Lingam and the feet on a lotus. Springing from the navel is a lotus stem with flower on which Brahma is seated.

Armenian Church This church in Chennai was built in 1772 on the site of the Armenian cemetery. This is a marvel of architectural beauty. This church has a magnificent bell tower, the largest in the city, has 6 bells. This tower attracts many and is a must place to visit in Chennai.

Ashtalakshmi Temple This temple is a highly revered shrine situated in Besant Nagar, on the shores of Bay of Bengal. The architecture of the temple is unique, with the deities installed in four levels. It looks different than the other South Indian temples as it is a modern construction, less than

25 years old. The temple enshrines Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess of Wealth and Lord Vishnu as the principal deities. The temple has separate shrine for the Ashtalakshmi forms of Goddess Lakshmi. Ashtalakshmi Temple has a shrine for the Dasavathars (the 10 incarnations) of Lord Vishnu.

Jain Temple The first Jain temple in South India in Chennai; this temple is known as Shree Gujarati Swetamber Jain Mandir. Lord Parshwanatha, the 23rd Teerthankar is the presiding deity of this renowned shrine. The three gopurams and five doors of the Mandir have marble carvings based on the architectural principles of the famous Dilwara temples. Only marble has been used in the construction, and the architects, carvers and workers were brought in from Rajasthan. The idol is made of Quartz selected from the Chellur mines in Karnataka. The stone was considered special due to its green color, which, according to Jain scriptures, is the colour of God. Jain acharyas walk all the way to the Gujarati shwetambar Mandir from North India and stay here for ‘Chatur Masa’.

Kaalikaambaal Temple A frequently visited temple, it is located in the bustling commercial area of George Town - in Thambu Chetty Street, (near Parry’s Corner) in North Chennai. It is over 400 years old and is said to have been visited by the Maratha King Shivaji. The Universal Mother is worshipped as Kalikaambaal - Kamakshi here. The

annual temple festival here involves an ornate chariot decorated with metal cymbals/cups is a unique feature of this temple. The festival attracts lot of tourists as well as local people.

Kaaraneeswarar Temple This is a very famous temple is situated at Saidapet. This temple is located next to the railway station. This temple has a 7-storied Gopuram (dome) with two prakarams. The main deity is Lord Karaneeswara and Goddess Swarnaambikai. This temple has a beautiful tank and is a main attraction apart from the tall Gopuram. Annual ten day Brahmotsavam takes place in the Tamil month of Chithirai 1. Lots and lots of devotees throng to this temple during this festival.

Kapaleeswarar Temple Located at the southern part of Katcheri Road in south Mylapore, this temple is a holy artifact dating back to 1250. Lord Shiva is the presiding deity of the Kapaleeswarar Temple. Karpagambal, his consort, is another major deity. The architecture is a supreme example of ancient Dravidian style, with typical side entrances, gopurams, courts and a tank built around the central shrine. The 37 m tall Gopuram (pillar) is carved with stucco gods, goddesses, and saints. The bronze statues of 63 Shaivite saints adorn the temple courtyard. The courtyard also has a Punnai tree, one of the oldest trees in Chennai.

Luz Church

Church of ‘Our Lady of Light’, popularly known as Luz Church, is located in a tiny corner of Mylapore. The church, built by Franciscan missionaries from Portugal in honour of Mother Mary in 1516, is commonly known as ‘Kaatu Kovil’ (Church located in a forest) amongst the local people. of ‘Our Lady of Light’ and is believed to be the oldest church in Chennai. The Luz Church is noteworthy for its old European ecclesiastical architecture. The arches in Gothic style and well-designed classical lines in European style, add to its beauty.

Marundeeswarar Temple Marundeeswarar Temple, God of Medicines, in Tiruvanmiyur has the temple deity Shiva in the form of Marundeeswar or Aushadeeswarar. Mythology says that it was Agastya, great saint, who named the deity ‘Aushadeeswarar’. Unlike other Siva temples, this temple does not have a shrine to the Navagrahas. The main Lingam is described as Swayambu. During the festival period the deity will be taken on procession in the middle of the day. The chariot, a high one, with the deity and the priests standing at least 6 or 7 feet above the crowd, and devotees use two long ropes pulls the deity around the temple. Sri Parthasarathy Temple It is located at Triplicane, near the famous Marina beach and spread over an area of 1.5 acres. It was built by the Pallavas in the 8th century. The temple, dedicated to Lord Krishna (Parthasarathy), houses images of the five incarnations of Vishnu. It also has a small shrine dedicated to Vedavalli Ammai, Vishnu’s consort. Parthasarathy in the sanctum sanctorum is in a standing posture facing east, holding in his right hand the divine conch called the Panchajanyam.

Periaapaalayath Amma Temple This temple dedicated to Goddess Periyapalayathamma, an incarnation of Shakti (Goddess Parvati), is an important religious and tourist place in Chennai. The bank extends over an area of 3.2 hectares and provides refuge to the different species of reptiles. Crocodile Bank started with a mere population of 30 crocodiles, which has now grown to 2400 reptiles, of varied species. One of the main attractions of the bank is the Crocodile Conservation Center. It is the largest breeding center of crocodiles in India and has bred thousands of crocodiles since its inception. Crocodile Bank consists of lush green flora, which makes it ideal for the habitation of reptiles, just like their natural habitat. Moreover, several African and Indian species of Crocodiles and alligators are kept in captivity here. The bank also has a Snake Farm, where anti-venom is produced. The venom extraction process is a great fascination for the visitors. In addition, Crocodile Bank also conducts research on the biology of crocodiles, turtles and monitors lizards. Today, the bank houses 12 endangered species of turtles and 5 species of snakes, including King Cobra. Though these animals are confined within its boundaries of, they enjoy the environment just like their wild and natural abode.

Mahabalipuram The city is also known as Mamallapuram and is located in the Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu. The city was once the capital of Pallava kings and was named after the Pallava King, Mamalla. It is flanked by a number of historical monuments of the yore. Considering the antiquity and the significance of the monuments, it has been listed amongst the world heritage sites of UNESCO.

The historical monuments here are a delight for domestic as well as foreign visitors. Situated at a distance of 60 km from Chennai, the rock cut temples and caves situated here are the finest in the world and originated between 7th and 9th century. The main attraction of Mamallapuram is the Shore Temple, which is renowned for its intricate carvings and skilled craftsmanship, the world over. The temple is located on the shore facing the sea. The most striking feature of this temple is that it is dedicated to both Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. Apart from this, there are a number of other monuments here, such as the cave temples, monolithic rathas (chariots), sculpted reliefs and structural temples. Most of these monuments display Dravidian style of architecture. The pillars exhibit Dravidian art, whereas sculptures are excellent specimens of Pallava art. However, many of these structures are incomplete, which indicates sudden withdrawal of patronage form rock cut temples.

Pulicat This is a small town situated at a distance of 60 km from Chennai. It houses a Dutch cemetery dating back to the 17th century. The Dutch built a fort here in the

year 1609, to ensure a comfortable stay at the Coromandel Coast for a long time. It was finally occupied by the British in 1825. After independence, the fort became a part of Chennai then Madras state of India, which was later renamed as Tamil Nadu, in 1968. There is also a Dutch Church here, which has withered away in spite of renovation. Owing to the number of monuments and lakes present here, a trip to Pulicat should be interesting. The cemetery is looked after by the Archaeological Survey of India. The main attraction of the place is the Pulicat Lake. The lake is separated from the Bay of Bengal, by a strip of land which comprises of the Pulicat town. Owing to its proximity to the sea, it has turned into a salt water lagoon. It is the second largest lagoon of India and boasts of a rich biodiversity. Therefore, the lagoon has been preserved as a Wildlife Sanctuary. It is a home to number of animals, fish, aquatic and terrestrial birds, mammals and reptiles. It is the hub of migratory birds like Flamingos, which are the most frequent visitors, with about 15,000 of them visiting every year. Pelicans, Kingfishers, Herons, Painted Storks, Spoonbills and Ducks are some of the other birds that show up at Pulicat Lake every year. There is also a light house on the opposite side of the lake.
