Since 2007, the Scheinfeld Center has built its reputation for inspiring and preparing up-and-coming entrepreneurs who can successfully rise to the occasion. It’s a great pleasure to present the 2019/2020 Scheinfeld Center annual report to our valued community. This was a year of new initiatives and expanded outreach, and I hope you will agree that our team delivered on our mission to support our diverse student entrepreneurs. Some notable highlights include: ●

Cultivated a Scheinfeld Innovator’s community of over 140 SBCC students through weekly meetups to inspire the entrepreneurial mindset across academic disciplines at SBCC.

Celebrated our 10th annual Scheinfeld New Venture Challenge for high school and collegiate student entrepreneurs amid the the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Launched a new Scheinfeld Interns virtual entrepreneurship program with 10 students receiving hands-on experience in a startup environment to fuel their growth and entrepreneurial readiness.

Sincere thanks to our committed community of faculty, staff, alumni, mentors, investors, and collaborators who were essential to this year’s success. Scheinfeld New Venture Challenge Our annual business plan and pitch competition invites Santa Barbara County college and high school students to compete for cash awards. The competition is an important capstone experience for students, and it also builds awareness about the Scheinfeld Center opportunities and resources. 2020 marked our 10th annual competition and was held virtually due to the pandemic.

Scheinfeld Innovators Community Launched in 2019, this community brings together SBCC clubs and students from any academic discipline for weekly meetups that cultivate the entrepreneurial mindset and global competence.

Scheinfeld Interns Program Redesigned in 2019, these project-based paid internships with the Scheinfeld Center help students grow their entrepreneurial skills in a team environment. The Readiness Inventory for Successful Entrepreneurship is used to establish a skill baseline for each intern and track development. The Scheinfeld Center also collaborates with the Center for International Trade Development to offer virtual internships with global small businesses.

Enlightened Entrepreneur Academy We invite entrepreneurs who have contributed significantly to the development of free enterprise throughout the world to our annual Enlightened Entrepreneurship Series networking event that includes a fireside chat between a moderator and the entrepreneur. The event culminates with presentation of the Jim Scheinfeld Enlightened Entrepreneur Award to honor their work. (On hold due to COVID-19)

Scheinfeld Get REAL Accelerator Get REAL provides SBCC collegiate winners of the Scheinfeld New Venture Challenge follow-on startup support, culminating with the Get REAL Shark Tank in which they compete for a $10,000 award. (On hold due to COVID-19)

Business Mentoring & Consulting We tap into regional industry experts and business support organizations to help students build their social connections and professional network. 2019/2020 Annual Report|

The Scheinfeld Center and SBCC’s entrepreneurship program meets students where they’re at, whether they’re merely curious about entrepreneurship, committed to advancing their concept step-by-step, or launching their startup at a rapid-fire pace. Given modern day complexities, we hold that the entrepreneurial mindset and skills are relevant to success within any life plan. We welcome diversity among our students and their business concepts, and we uphold equity in the access to important resources so they can focus on what matters.

, Jacob Zander Footsouls are much more than just insoles to make your Converse feel more comfortable—they’re a symbol to “Feel Your Soul” and live life to the fullest. As with many entrepreneurs, Jake’s entrepreneurial journey started with pain. He loved to wear his Converse, but he disliked that they were so uncomfortable, even leading to shin splints. So, he set out to develop a solution that people who wear Converse would love; something that made their Converse more comfortable and something that would inspire them. Jake launched his concept in 2017 through SBCC’s Enterprise Launch course and went on to win the 2018 Scheinfeld New Venture Challenge. In 2019 he returned to win the Scheinfeld Get REAL Accelerator Shark Tank competition and a $10,000 award. The award helped him 5x his sales in the months following. Stay tuned: Jake reports there’s more to come in 2020!

Sylvia Franco-Comer Sylvia Comer had a strong desire to relive the authentic Mexican fresh salsa that she enjoyed in her childhood as made by her late Mama Lidia. So, joining forces with her husband, she launched their flagship product, Smokin’ Good Salsa during her Enterprise Launch course at SBCC. The salsa is a fusion of Mexican and Western fresh and smoky flavors. Sylvia placed second in the 2017 Scheinfeld New Venture Challenge, and she went on to complete the Scheinfeld 2019 Get REAL Accelerator in which she landed her salsa on the shelf in 27 Gelson’s stores.

Adam Verhasselt Gone are the days when a single album cover would suffice for musicians. Nowadays, musicians are required to meet the market demand for digital media. Why? Music streaming platforms, such as Spotify, have enabled musicians to upload animated visuals that autoplay as users stream music, providing a new level of engagement with their fans. That’s where Adam’s startup, Vlux Visual, comes in. Vlux Visual provides animated visuals, automatically generated, at a low cost. Adam’s entrepreneurial capacity is well-demonstrated with two Scheinfeld New Venture challenge wins in 2018 and 2019, placing third and first, respectively.
