*Before the start date of the program, should the U.S. State Department issue a “Travel Warning” that American citizens must not travel to Japan, SBCC will cancel the program. If the program is canceled as a result of a travel warning, AIFS will refund the entire program fee to all participants on that program

Travel & Housing Air Transportation. SBCC has contracted with AIFS to provide travel and housing arrangements for the Japan Summer 2018 Program.

Group Flight Deadline: April 6, 2018 **You must be accepted into the program before you can reserve your space on the group flight. Apply by March 30th to allow time for the review process

AIFS will organize an optional round-trip group flight from LAX to Tokyo (TYO) returning Kansai International (KIX) to LAX on a regularly scheduled airline. Airfare is not included in the program price and costs $1,295 plus departure taxes and surcharges (estimated at $190). There is a 10 student minimum requirement for the group flight. You must notify AIFS on or before April 6, 2018, if you wish to fly with the group. You may make your own travel arrangements if you do not wish to travel with the group. An AIFS representative will meet the group flight participants at the appropriate airport in Tokyo and arrange for a round-trip transfer from the airport to the Tokyo housing and from the Kyoto housing. All participants are responsible for checking in at the designated arrival point and time on the scheduled date of arrival. Participants missing the transfer and/or check-in time are responsible for making and paying their own transfer and first-night accommodations respectively. Detailed arrival information will be provided approximately two weeks prior to arrival. Housing Arrangements. Exact housing placements will be provided to participants upon your arrival. Twin–bedded rooms on a bed & breakfast basis in a centrally located hotel in Tokyo, twinbedded apartments in a centrally located apart-hotel in Kyoto. Each apart-hotel is equipped with linens, a kitchenette, laundry facilities, and WiFi.

Information Meetings Information meetings for the program will be held on the SBCC Campus. Attendance is not mandatory for participation in the program Parents and students are welcome to attend. Information meetings are usually located at the Luria Library Conference Room on the West Campus unless otherwise noted. Program Description The summer 2018 program to Japan was born out of a high demand. Students will learn the concepts and principles of Interpersonal Communication as they experience the "old" and "new" Japan by visiting key architectural and cultural sites in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Hiroshima. Students will gain an appreciation of the historical, cultural, and linguistic diversity of the country, and will learn how Japanese people view their society and identity. In addition, students will understand the significance of Japan's relationship with the United States. This program will offer a valuable experience for students to gain an understanding of effective communication in a global society. Additionally, students will study the work of classical and contemporary Japanese directors and how their work has advanced the international art of cinema. The Film Studies course will analyze landmark films by celebrated Japanese directors in terms of theme, structure and cinematic technique. Emphasis will be placed on the role of the “auteur” director. Japanese directorial contributions to specific genres such as sci-fi, martial arts, and horror will be explored.

Program Co-Directors Professor Mika Garard has been teaching courses in Communication at Santa Barbara City College for 17 years. She was born and raised in Northern Japan

and came to the US as a Rotary Foundation Scholar to pursue her education. She holds a B.S. and M.S. in Speech Communication from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. While she was a graduate student, she worked at the International Student Office organizing workshops, field trips, and new international student orientations. Before she started teaching at SBCC, she worked as a Japanese-English translator at a Japanese-French joint-venture company in the Midwest. Professor Michael Stinson has been a full-time faculty member in the department of Film and Media Studies at SBCC for the past 17 years. During his tenure, he has directed seven international study programs and taught courses in screenwriting, film production, cinematography, directing, editing, and film history. He was awarded a Master of Fine Arts in Film and Television from U.C.L.A. and worked as a screenwriter for Warner Brothers, Paramount, and Universal Studios. He is currently Co-Director of the Student Screenwriting and Filmmaking Competition at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. Prior to film school, he lived and worked abroad for ten years as a photojournalist and was based in Japan for over six years.

Program Requirements The Summer 2018 short program in Japan is open to students who are 18+ years and who are in good academic standing. There is no language or major requirement. You do not have to be currently enrolled at SBCC, but must enroll for Summer II, 2018 once you are accepted to the program. You will be required to attend a mandatory pre-departure meeting in May 2018. Details will be sent prior to the meeting.

Application Deadline We encourage you to apply early, as the number of places is limited.

you are planning on taking the group flight. A minimum of 20 students must be approved by April 20th for the program to materialize. If the program is full before the deadline, acceptance cannot be guaranteed.

*Before the start date of the program, should the U.S. State Department issue a “Travel Warning” that American citizens must not travel to Japan, SBCC will cancel the program. If the program is canceled as a result of a travel warning, AIFS will refund the entire program fee to all participants on that program

Travel & Housing Air Transportation. SBCC has contracted with AIFS to provide travel and housing arrangements for the Japan Summer 2018 Program.

Group Flight Deadline: April 6, 2018 **You must be accepted into the program before you can reserve your space on the group flight. Apply by March 30th to allow time for the review process

AIFS will organize an optional round-trip group flight from LAX to Tokyo (TYO) returning Kansai International (KIX) to LAX on a regularly scheduled airline. Airfare is not included in the program price and costs $1,295 plus departure taxes and surcharges (estimated at $190). There is a 10 student minimum requirement for the group flight. You must notify AIFS on or before April 6, 2018, if you wish to fly with the group. You may make your own travel arrangements if you do not wish to travel with the group. An AIFS representative will meet the group flight participants at the appropriate airport in Tokyo and arrange for a round-trip transfer from the airport to the Tokyo housing and from the Kyoto housing. All participants are responsible for checking in at the designated arrival point and time on the scheduled date of arrival. Participants missing the transfer and/or check-in time are responsible for making and paying their own transfer and first-night accommodations respectively. Detailed arrival information will be provided approximately two weeks prior to arrival. Housing Arrangements. Exact housing placements will be provided to participants upon your arrival. Twin–bedded rooms on a bed & breakfast basis in a centrally located hotel in Tokyo, twinbedded apartments in a centrally located apart-hotel in Kyoto. Each apart-hotel is equipped with linens, a kitchenette, laundry facilities, and WiFi.

Information Meetings Information meetings for the program will be held on the SBCC Campus. Attendance is not mandatory for participation in the program Parents and students are welcome to attend. Information meetings are usually located at the Luria Library Conference Room on the West Campus unless otherwise noted.
