Living the Dream on the Summer Solstice
I
first met Deborah Samuel three years ago, at a beautiful $13 million home for sale in Montecito’s exclusive golden quadrangle. Deborah was the Realtor representing the seller of a gorgeous 6,000-square-foot mansion. We toured the entire grounds, from the two-story entry portico to the terraced pool house and the custom-built Pilates studio. The property oozed opulence, and Deborah led the way. I can feel intimidated walking through houses with eight-digit price tags, but Deborah seemed right at home and made me feel comfortable as well. Fast-forward to last week, as Deborah and her wife, Kelsey, hosted me on board their floating home in the Santa Barbara Harbor. The winter sun MAKE MYSELF AT HOME glistened off the water, with my favorite coastline view as our backdrop. It was a magical winter morning, and I immediately fell under the spell of their tiny-home lifestyle on the American Riviera, as they shared the story behind their journey to make their goal of floating-home ownership a reality. As we stood up on the flybridge, gazing over the masts of their neighby Sarah Sinclair boring vessels, Deb described visiting Santa Barbara in 1998, kayaking in the harbor, looking up at the foothills, and declaring that one day she would live here. But homeownership in Santa Barbara is not easy. Nor is boat ownership the romantic, carefree experience that many people imagine. Deb and Kelsey lived in an RV for five years while they saved to purchase their dream home. Boats can’t be financed like houses, and slips in Santa Barbara are rare and pricey. They knew what they wanted, and with their eyes on the prize, they strategically styled their lives so that when the right combination of circumstances appeared, they were ready. Their patience, perseverance, and planning paid off earlier this year, when they purchased the 1973 Grand Banks Europa 42 #323 named Summer Solstice and brought her home to their newly acquired slip in Marina 4. Grand Banks is an iconic line of power boats that has a reputation
for long-distance trawling and pleasure cruising. From 1965 to 2005, more than 1,500 Grand Banks 42s were built. The first of these vessels is reportedly still in action as a commercial dive boat in Sweden, a testimony to the craftsmanship and longevity of these ships. Built from wood, the shipping line made the decision in 1973 to switch from wooden hulls to fiberglass, a controversial change that sparks debate among serious boaters even today. The Summer Solstice had a retrofit in 2010, which included fiberglassing the wooden hull to the waterline. She now has the perfect blend of old-school wooden charm plus modern convenience underneath. The Summer Solstice, bright white with sparkling chrome railings and teak details, gleamed in the sunshine as I came aboard. I poked and peeked and asked a ton of questions about how they’ve made this floating tiny home function for them. Living in any small space means prioritizing. For example, in their efficient kitchen — or, rather, the galley — every appliance has its place, tucked out of sight. Sitting proudly on the countertop front and center, however, is a classic espresso machine. Judging by the made-to-order cappuccino that Kelsey whipped up for me, I’d say that their priorities are in the right place. Wardrobe needs also dictated some customization. A second cabin was retrofitted to function as a walk-in closet, with double-layer clothes bars, hanging shoe racks, and a cushioned bench for comfort. Speaking of comfort, the Summer Solstice has not one but two fireplaces. One is a fire table on the aft deck, lending ambience to this cozy gathering place, day or night. The other fireplace is an electric heater with faux flames crackling in the middle of the living room, a k a the salon. The salon has been outfitted with a spacious workstation since the Summer Solstice is also headquarters for Kelsey and Deborah’s burgeoning businesses. Deborah is a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices’ Montecito office, and the pair also owns Santa Barbara SOS, a company specializing in moving, downsizing and estate sales for seniors. Many clients use Deb’s expertise in
preparing a home for the market, in conjunction with Kelsey and her team’s services to help them reduce their possessions and prepare for a trimmed-down next chapter in their lives. Their own minimalist lifestyle helps Deborah and Kelsey relate to clients who may be daunted at the prospect of leaving a 3,000-square-foot home for a 900-square-foot apartment in a senior living facility. The couple explains that they have chosen a life of experiences rather than things and that their lives are fuller than ever. The biggest extravagance onboard, however, is for their “kid.” Black Cat is their petite feline sailing companion who rules the Summer Solstice. He lies up on the bridge in the sunshine and patrols the perimeter. He also has the most refined kitty powder-room setup that I’ve ever seen: an unassuming sideboard that has been retrofitted to accommodate a litter box inside. Easy cleanup, ultimate privacy. Black Cat has a throne befitting his station on the yacht. At this time of year, as the days get shorter and the temperatures drop, it’s fitting that Deborah and Kelsey are living aboard the Summer Solstice. They’re basking in the never-ending sunshine of their dreams coming true.

Mystic Whaler
Tall Ship Commissioned for Educational Adventures
O
n October 15, the Central Coast Ocean Adventures Foundation (CCOAF), a relatively new nonprofit, commissioned its Mystic Whaler tall ship for her new purpose of providing extraordinary at-sea experiential education to area youth. Guests enjoyed the ceremony from their dockside seats at the Santa Barbara Harbor, followed by a celebration at the S.B. Maritime Museum. The 110-foot schooner, built in 1967 as a representation of a late 19th-century cargo ship, was purchased by Foundation founders Roger and Sarah Chrisman. It arrived from the East Coast to its new home in Channel Islands Harbor, Oxnard, in January 2022. This very impressive vessel carries 3,000 square feet of sail. At the event, Executive Director and Captain Christine Healy related how programming on Mystic Whaler provides STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education, and that STEM education is very important for developing critical-thinking skills. CCOAF’s programming, she explained, also provides the opportunity for social and emotional growth. Participants practice effective communication, efficient organization, courage, and self-discipline. Mystic Whaler did its first programming in Santa Barbara last October, followed by a spring visit, and then did five weeks this fall. The Foundation is committed to future programming for school groups and the community in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. Through a partnership with the S.B. Maritime Museum, which handles the bookings, CCOAF held programming for 17 public school classes this fall. Most of the classes were at the 4th-grade level, with 19 to 35 kids on board at a time. The Sailing Through Time programming, which ran this year, is a living history program. With staff in costumes and character, it starts dockside with STEM activities and, weather
permitting, sailing thereafter. The program teaches the historical uses and methods for sailing a tall ship and challenges the kids to operate the vessel. While the stated cost to the schools is a hefty $3,700, so far, all kids have come either for free or for half that cost, depending on the income classification of the school population. This has been thanks to generous grants from, most notably, the Chrismans, whose philosophy is “No child left ashore.” A few foundations have stepped up as well. A total of 762 Santa Barbara County students have participated, with kids from six out of the nine participating schools attending for free. Healy shared that kids are very excited to be on board. It seems inconceivable but is true, Healy related, that some kids who attend school so close to the Pacific Ocean have never actually been to the sea, “much less experienced it from the deck of a beautiful and majestic sailing ship.” According to Maritime Museum Executive Director Greg Gorga, the hands-on, experiential program is fantastic for youth who have learning and language challenges. Students learn communication skills, teamwork, and leadership. They use math skills previously only known from a textbook, and they accomplish major tasks, such as raising a sail, plotting a course, and learning mechanical advantage. These tasks, according to Gorga, also build self-esteem and confidence. There’s a fun factor here, too. Kids get particularly excited, Gorga related, about raising the sails and doing a tug-of-war exercise with the block and tackle. According to Healy, a favorite activity is being lifted in the bosun’s chair, an activity that teaches mechanical advantage and builds teamwork. Interest in the programming ran high among Santa Barbara County schools, but constraints in the Santa Barbara harbor limit its time here. The ship is also available to groups other than schools, with bookings handled by the Museum.

Personal Goal Planning: Don't forget to combine both personal and business goals, it's not all about work! Being honest and self-aware is essential when it comes to personal objectives. Think about your ideals, what would most greatly impact you, and areas for development. Think about the things in your personal and professional life that make you happy and fulfilled. Regular Reflection: Goal planning is an iterative process. Regularly assess your progress and adjust your goals accordingly. Life is dynamic, and your aspirations may evolve over time. Reflecting on your journey allows you to stay aligned with your values and adjust your goals as needed. I use an app called STREAKS for keeping track of how I am doing throughout the year. Also, be sure that each goal follows the SMART criteria — Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound — which are a tried-and-true framework for effective goal setting. Instead of setting a broad goal like "exercise more," make it SMART by specifying, for instance, "complete a 30-minute workout four times a week." This not only defines the objective but also provides a clear roadmap for success. Goals without deadlines and SMART
criteria are just dreams. Tips for Implementation: Break It Down: Break down large goals into smaller, manageable tasks. This not only makes the journey less overwhelming but also provides more Todd Shea opportunities for celebrating achievements along the way. Prioritize: Not all goals are created equal. Identify your high-priority goals and focus your energy on achieving them. This helps prevent burnout and ensures that you're investing your resources where they matter most. Celebrate Milestones: Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, whether big or small. This positive reinforcement not only boosts morale but also creates a sense of accomplishment that fuels motivation for the next set of goals. You're laying the groundwork for an effective and rewarding year ahead of you by adopting the thoughtful process of creating specific SMART objectives and using these pointers in your planning. As you set out on this adventure, keep in mind that goal planning is a continuous process that changes and grows with you rather than a one-time chore. Enjoy yourselves, and have a fantastic 2024!
