If you’ve been watching a lot of HGTV lately, perhaps you’re thinking about updating your house or a particular space? As a lover of all things interior, I often get asked to help clients refresh their home. Some of my first questions revolve around determining their design style and trying to get an idea of how they want their updated space to look and feel. Often people have a hard time defining their style, which is normal and, I believe, a good thing. If you want to make some updates to your home but are unsure of how to begin or what to pick, fear not! Here are my tips to help guide your interior decorating journey.
You’re not limited to just one style. When it comes to one’s personal interior style, rarely does it fit neatly into a box. We’re all a mishmash of influences, cultures, and experiences, and usually this influences how we want to feel in our home. Whether you lean toward minimalism, industrial vibes, wabi-sabi, or beachy elegance, your style is likely a blend. Embrace this as it helps create a home or room that feels like a collection of your travels, family, history, and personality.
Assess your current decor. Take a look around your home. What pieces do you love? Which ones make your heart skip a beat? These are clues to your style. Maybe that vintage map on the wall or your collection of old concert ticket stubs holds the key.
Consider your lifestyle. Your lifestyle should be taken into consideration when making design choices. Do you have young children or pets? Or perhaps you’re a busy bee who craves simplicity? Your lifestyle should help guide decisions when selecting colors, materials, and fabrics.
Get some inspiration. Pinterest, magazines, and Instagram are great resources, so spend some time diving into these treasure troves. Collect images and see if there are certain patterns, colors, textures, and styles to which you are drawn. Do you consistently save cozy cottage interiors or modern lofts? These can be clues to what resonates with you, even if it’s vastly different from the style of your home or space now.
Budget wisely. Decorating doesn’t have to break the bank. Prioritize what matters most to you. Splurge on that statement piece, and then get creative with budget-friendly finds. Mix old and new, high-end and thrifted. Blending textures, colors, and eras makes spaces interesting and unique.
Now that you’ve dipped your toes into the world of decorating styles, start experimenting! Move furniture around, swap out accessories, and let your home evolve. And most importantly, enjoy the process. Your home is your canvas!
I’d love to see your home updates! Tag me on social media @vacayrentaldesign

It all goes back to my meetings with Robert Reffkin, CEO & Founder of Compass, in 2015 when he was trying to expand into Southern California. Robert shared his vision for an agent-centric company that provided best-inclass support for agents, beautiful marketing, and a tech platform that allowed agents to be more efficient and provide clients with better information and services than ever before. We talked about building a company of proven successful agents that were likable, collaborative, professional, ethical, and fully committed. I had been in real estate for over 30 years at that point and had a very similar perspective, or vision of creating a company of excellent agents, with phenomenal support and tools, that could then give our customers the best service possible. In January 2016, I left my management position at Coldwell Banker and started Compass in Santa Barbara and Montecito.
With the help of the founding agents, we created an agent committee to make sure we were enlisting only those agents that were productive and met our value criteria of being likable, collaborative, professional, ethical, and fully committed. Now as we approach our 9-year mark, we have assembled an amazing group of agents approximately 100 strong. Our culture is second to none as our values resonate throughout our Compass agent community. We provide our agents best-in-class support, tools, and education so they can provide their clients best-in-class service. We have grown to the 3rd largest company in the area (by 2023 sales volume) and #1 in the country (by sales volume) three years in a row. We focus on our agents so they can focus on their clients, and we pride ourselves on our client-first commitment.
“People have asked me this question many times over the 8 1/2 years since I started the Compass office in the Greater Santa Barbara area. For me and my agents, and make no mistake this company was built by the agents as much as anyone, it was to build something that would be based on the concepts explained above. For you, our future friends and clients - If you want to work with amazing, experienced, caring agents that bring these values, beautiful and effective marketing solutions, one-of-akind tools, and incredible support to make the home selling or buying experience more efficient and enjoyable; people who have been committed to perfecting their craft, building this strong and professional culture, and always putting their clients first, I encourage you to come find out for yourself.”

I’VE LIVED IN SANTA BARBARA FOR 50 YEARS.
THAT’S 50 YEARS OF SWIMMING IN OUR BEAUTIFUL OCEAN.
50 YEARS OF BUILDING FRIENDSHIPS –COOKING, FEASTING, PLAYING, GROWING TOGETHER...BABIES... TEENAGERS... WEDDINGS!
50 YEARS OF GOING TO THE FARMER’S MARKETS.
50 YEARS OF PLAYING ULTIMATE FRISBEE ON THE BEACH, GETTING SLOWER EVERY YEAR.
50 YEARS OF WRITING STORIES, PLAYS AND FILMS.
50 YEARS OF HELPING PEOPLE FIND A HOME, OR SELL THEIR HOME.
50 YEARS OF CALLING SANTA BARBARA OUR HOME.
“I am so happy to take a moment to say good things about our Realtor, David Wieger. Buying my first house in 42 years, I anticipated being pushed, coerced and bullied into a decision. What I found in David Wieger was a man who listened intently to our specific wishes and concerns who moved quickly to offer us possibilities. My wife and I then made a total about-face, looking for something entirely different and David missed not one beat, sending us several options that reflected our new interests. We actually found a house in Santa Barbara and made an offer within a very short time. The whole process was remarkably smooth. David seemed to be able to expedite matters through his contacts and diplomacy. David’s depth of understanding of the entire process, his patience, wisdom and willingness were huge factors in ameliorating our stress and anxiety of the house-buying process. I’m delighted to call him my friend and recommend him heartily!”
- Meredith & Nancy
“We can’t recommend working with David highly enough! From the initial call, we felt like he understood exactly what we were looking for, and we connected with his calm, relaxing, patient manner. He went above and beyond the entire time we worked together, giving his time generously and checking in with us frequently. He gave us his honest and transparent feedback about a number of properties, saving us from a lot of headache. But don’t let his laid back vibes deceive you; David is also a total shark! He negotiated a tough deal for us like an utter pro, keeping us calm and focused the entire time, and delivering a phenomenal result. He was just so great to work with. We couldn’t be happier with how it turned out, and are already recommending him to friends and family. “
- Vanessa & Xander
“David Michael Wieger has a talent for joining dreamers with the perfect house and a gift for graciously guiding sellers through the process of reaching for the next dream. It was to my great joy and satisfaction that I worked with David as both buyer and seller. You’ll not find a more creative and hard working agent with more heart and expertise in real estate.”

Sofie and Charles;
Simply thank you for all of your love and support during the sale of my mom’s home. You were amazing in all that you did. However, I will never forget: your enthusiasm at the estate sale, you are a natural salesperson, your kindness with my sisters, your incredibly warm and loving hugs. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

Abel Ramos & Jackie Potter discuss selling and living Santa Barbara.
In honor of Fiesta, can you tell us about a favorite community event or tradition that you look forward to each year?
A: My favorite is the I Madonnari Festival, just a few blocks away from our home at the Mission. It’s a joy to bump into familiar faces and enjoy the vibrant artwork. Our kids love decorating their own squares, expressing themselves in the festival’s spirit. We end the day with food, live music, and catching up with friends. I love creating cherished memories in a community that feels like home.
J: I’m lucky because my favorite community event happens every week! The Farmer’s Markets throughout our county are hands-down my favorite community gathering. Whether it’s breaking up my Tuesday with the State St. market or riding my bike to the Carpinteria market, my community cup (and grocery bag) gets filled!
As Santa Barbara’s popularity has grown, what/where are some of your favorite local, hidden-gems in SB?
A: Some of my favorite local spots in Santa Barbara are the protected spaces up the Gaviota coast. Some of this space was in my wife’s family for decades, so there is such a deep rooted love of the area for our family. I am so grateful that so much of my wife’s life was spent up there, so we can continue to create countless memories, lessons and values with our family. From hiking, camping trips, to picnics on the beach, so much of this coastline has a special place in our hearts. It is beautiful to see the efforts that continue to keep this coastline natural, a vital part of what makes Santa Barbara so special.
J: If I shared my secret beach spot in the Indy Newspaper, it wouldn’t be a secret anymore! But in a city filled with taco spots, my go-to “hole-in-the-wall”(which is more of a hidden door-in-the-wall) for the most delicious tacos and salsa is Tacos Don Roge in Carpinteria. Every week I look forward to grabbing tacos and meeting my man and our dogs at the beach for a sunset taco picnic.
As realtors, you act as stewards of the community. What are some of your favorite things about living in Santa Barbara?
A: Living in Santa Barbara is very special for our family. The community spirit, friendly people, and relaxed atmosphere make it an ideal place to raise our kids. My wife has deep roots here, and seeing our children grow up in a city she loves so dearly, is incredibly fulfilling. I love that our typical day involves being up at the creeks in the morning, grabbing a bite at Cold Springs and an evening at the beach, all in one day. We get to experience so much with such convenience.
J: My favorite thing about living here isn’t tangible. For me, it’s the energy of a town situated between the mountains and the pacific ocean. It’s the people who are committed to creating a life around nature and community. In Santa Barbara, “keeping up with the Joneses” means comparing how many times you went to the beach last week, and that’s exactly the kind of neighborly competition I can get behind.
A: For sellers in Santa Barbara, it’s important to understand how the market has changed. Inventory is slowly growing, and interest rates are playing a significant role in buyer decisions. The market dynamics have shifted since the COVID era, making it crucial to present your home well and price it right from the start. If your home misses the mark, you might find yourself waiting with price reductions. Having a knowledgeable agent and a strategic approach are essential in navigating these current market challenges effectively.
J: For buyers, outside of having a whole bunch of cash and patience, your best asset is a strong support system. With little inventory and high demand, buying in SB is challenging, but having an agent who is proactive, has market foresight, and the hustle to win for you will make your experience not only successful but enjoyable as well. I always remind my clients that this process should have a balance of work and fun!

Tabler “I worked with Stan beginning in 2016. Since then he’s represented me in four transactions in Santa Barbara. Over the years I’ve worked with quite a number of realtors in both Washington and California and Stan is far and away the best. His decades of experience in the Santa Barbara and Goleta markets bear fruit when one needs accurate and honest assessments of property condition, neighborhoods and valuation.”

Over a decade ago, we had the opportunity to live here and embrace a new lifestyle; where living on the Mesa means ocean-scented breezes, the sounds of seagulls and seals barking, long runs below the cliffs of Shoreline Park, exploring sea creatures at Leadbetter Beach with our daughter at low tide, and launching our catamaran off the beach for a wild sail on a windswept blustery ocean... in a word, heavenly.

Concerns about human and planetary health have led many to prefer locally produced, organic foods. Despite no pesticides or chemicals, the organic label tells nothing about the nutritive content of food. Only healthy soils such as those restored on regenerative farms can produce foods rich in vitamins, proteins, minerals, and enzymes. Local sourcing means fewer carbon emissions and improved freshness.
Because we have depleted our soil over many centuries, but especially in the past 70 years, the fish, plants, and algae we harvest from our oceans are more packed, in gen-
eral, with protein and micronutrients than terrestrial foods. Seafood is an important and growing source of protein for humans around the world. Data from 2020 indicates that more than half the food harvested from the oceans is from aquaculture, namely, fish farms.
pollutants out of water and create habitat for other sea creatures. Seaweed farms are another they sequester carbon, offsetting greenhouse-gas emissions, and extract nutrients from fertilizer runoff from land, thereby helping reduce algae blooms.
Some farmed species such as salmon, tilapia, and shrimp had many negative environmental impacts in the early years of farming but have undergone a transformation due to technological innovations and new practices.
by
After a rocky beginning, large-scale fish farming has become a truly sustainable method of producing seafood. Some categories of aquaculture are inherently sustainable mussels, clams, and oysters filter
Waste has been significantly reduced: AI camera systems track fish movement in their pens to deliver just the right amount of food at the right time. Bioremediation, another improvement, employs filters that provide surfaces for beneficial bacteria and micro-algae to clean up pollutants in the water. These and other management practices, now incorporated into U.S. regulations, have made a big difference. Unfortunately, they are not implemented in many other countries. Since the U.S. still imports around 70 percent of the seafood consumed here, a serious issue remains as to how to get other
countries to improve the sustainability of their aquaculture.
California became the first state to set up a statewide network of marine protected areas (MPAs), the largest component of which is in the Santa Barbara Channel. Our local MPAs protect numerous endangered species, sensitive habitats, kelp forests, and deep-sea coral gardens. The success of these zones has been dramatic, essentially dispelling the initial opposition from local fishermen. Species have rebounded, spilling beyond the reserve boundaries, and greatly increasing the catches of fishermen. Because of our healthy and sustainably managed Channel, buying local seafood makes sense, just like consuming local, organic fruits and produce.
“Our planet is 70 percent ocean” says Kim Selkoe, CEO of the local Get Hooked seafood company. “If we fish sustainably and harvest sustainably, we can meet the protein needs of large numbers of people.”
