September Is the New January
For many, September feels like the real start of the year, even more so than January. The back-to-school season, the end of summer, and the shift in weather all contribute to a sense of renewal and fresh beginnings that rival the New Year. I personally love this time of year the Minnesota girl in me would love to have cooler temps, but I know they’re coming! Here are a few reasons why I believe that September can be looked at, and acted upon, as “the new January.”
THE BACK-TO-SCHOOL MINDSET
Whether you’re a student, a parent, or just someone who remembers the school calendar, September often marks a return to routine. After the slower pace of summer, there’s an innate desire to get back on track, set goals, and establish new habits. It’s a time to refocus and approach the coming months with a renewed sense of purpose, much like in January.
A TIME FOR REFLECTION AND PLANNING
The end of summer is also a natural period for reflection. As the days get shorter and the air turns crisp, there’s a subtle shift that encourages introspection. People begin to reassess their goals for the year, check in on their New Year’s resolutions, and make adjustments where needed. September offers a chance to hit the reset button and make a final push toward achieving those ambitions before the year ends.
THE POWER OF SEASONAL CHANGE
The changing seasons also play a role in making September feel like a fresh start. As the vibrant greens of summer give way to the rich hues of autumn, there’s a sense of transition and new beginnings. This natural shift can inspire change and motivate people to embrace new challenges, much like the dawn of a new year.
RECLAIMING ROUTINE
While January is often about setting big goals and making dramatic changes, September’s appeal lies in its practicality. It’s a time to reclaim routines that may have slipped during the summer months. Whether it’s getting back into a fitness regimen, reestablishing work habits, or simply organizing your home, September is the perfect time to get things in order and create a solid foundation for the remainder of the year.
A SECOND CHANCE AT NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS
by Sara Caputo
For those whose New Year’s resolutions have faded, September offers a second chance. It’s an opportunity to revisit those goals with fresh eyes and renewed energy. The timing is ideal for making meaningful changes before the holiday season arrives, ensuring you finish the year on a high note. In many ways, September embodies the spirit of new beginnings just as much as January does.
HERE’S AN IDEA TO TRY NOW
Take this Labor Day weekend to commit to something new and different. It need not be something grand or with a lot of fanfare, and the commitment only has to last through December 31. Start and finish the book that’s been on your bedside table for months. Brown-bag it once a week. Get your email inbox cleaned up and keep it that way or hit the gym at least two times per week.
Come January 1, you may find that your 2025 is already off to a smooth start.

Headway in Curbing Packaging Waste
Plastics have brought convenience and benefit to our lives but also pollution, toxicity, and environmental degradation. Globally, almost 500 million tons of plastic are produced each year, 90 percent of which ends up contaminating our planet. Alarmingly, plastic production is forecast to soar and could triple by 2040.
The framework for a global plastics treaty was adopted by 175 countries in 2022 with final negotiations to happen later this year, followed by implementation starting early next year. Despite being a giant step forward, much remains to be done to reverse our plastic polluting ways.
Perhaps the most encouraging are the

sweeping measures that the EU (European Union) has just enacted to address packaging waste. The regulations aim to reduce environmental damage and promote sustainable practices. The PPWR (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation) sets binding targets on throw-away plastics. On average, every person in the EU generates 418 pounds of packaging trash each year, and this figure is growing.
For the first time, the EU has created goals to combat the growing problem of waste by reducing packaging regardless of the material involved. Packaging must be 5 percent less by 2030, 10 percent by 2035, and 15 percent by 2040. The PPWR’s fundamental goal is to reshape packaging habits everywhere in the EU. The protocol requires that almost all packaging material be recyclable by 2030. Plastic packaging is especially singled out with minimum recycled content standards. Takeout restaurants must provide reuseable containers. Single-use plastic bags, straws, utensils, etc. will be banned by 2030. Similarly for miniature packaging of toiletry products, ubiquitous in the hospitality industry. Plastic and metal beverage containers will be collected separately via deposit-return programs.
These EU rules cover the full life cycle of packaging, including the manufacture, composition, and reusable or recoverable nature of materials. The requirements are designed to foster innovation. One example being researched in Singapore is to duplicate the gut flora of a super worm (Zophobas atratus) that degrades plastics. Using the microbes found in the worm’s gut in varying combinations, scientists have been able to efficiently break down the most prevalent types of plastics in a scalable and replicable manner.
While challenges remain, adoption of the PPWR is a big leap forward in the fight against plastic pollution and waste proliferation. Being the biggest producer of packaging waste, the U.S. needs to follow suit. As an added benefit, all these rules, requirements, and measures provide a big boost to creating a circular economy.

Enjoy the benefits of an existing typical local area investor return, while working to realize the significant upside investors want today (mid-5% to 6%+ cap rate range) and could be attainable for this well-located central Santa Barbara multi-family asset. The location is a few blocks to Cottage Hospital, and within 1-2 miles of several other major employment centers and the signature Santa Barbara amenities of downtown restaurants/retail, the Theater/Arts district, the waterfront/beaches, and Santa Barbara City College. Along with close proximity to freeway access and artery streets allowing tenants ease of reaching these destinations, the factors combine to generate unmatched tenant demand. S.B. Youth Sailing Foundation Celebrates New Clubhouse
Scholarships for Sailing Lessons for Low-Income Youth Continue
On August 15, the Santa Barbara Youth Sailing Foundation (SBYSF), a nonprofit formed and supported by members of the Santa Barbara Yacht Club (SBYC), held a jubilant “kelp cutting” for its new Clubhouse on Marina One, just past the yacht club.
At the cutting, SBYSF President Lauren Bell, who recently took the helm of the nonprofit, welcomed donors and other guests. She shared how the foundation is dedicated to providing youth with the skills, confidence, and camaraderie that sailing offers. Many individuals were recognized for the hard work and talent they contributed to the project, but “The Erics” Boardmember Eric Andresen and immediate past president Eric Stokke got the highest praise for their leadership in the planning and building phases, and Andreson was lauded also for his custom woodworking.
Previously, there was a basic storage shed on the site and classes were held inside the yacht club, a situation that became increasingly inadequate for the popular and growing program. The new clubhouse, right on the dock, includes a well-appointed classroom and storage area. Program Manager Nick Kaschak described the new facility as a massive upgrade that creates a “culture of excellence” that fits with his philosophy of “Sail like a champion today.”
The facility was built offsite to avoid the challenges of building in the harbor, but transport and relocation provided their own challenges. Smart minds collaborating solved these.
Lots of donors were recognized, including the Deardorff family, whose sizable fund provided seed funding, Roger and Sarah Chrisman, Harry and Wendy Atterbury, Kenny and Krista Kieding, Jody Holehouse, and Stanley and Lil Nelson.
From this column’s perspective, the best part of SBYSF is that the program doesn’t just serve yacht club and other financially well-off kids, but also serves low-income kids through full scholarships for sailing lessons. Each year, Santa Barbara Yacht Club Women, a nonprofit foundation
comprising female members of the S.B. Yacht Club, funds scholarships so about 20 low-income youth get the same fun and rewarding experience as yacht club kids get. So far this year, $10,000 has been granted and since SBYCW’s inception in 1989, more than $250,000 has been doled out. Scholarship recipients comprise about 10 percent of participants.
According to SBYCW Scholarship Committee Chair Tracy Schifferns, sailing provides a multitude of benefits to kids, including developing problem-solving skills, boosting confidence, promoting physical fitness, and fostering responsibility and respect for nature.
Much of the recent funding has gone through the Police Activities League (PAL) for summer lessons, which is by far the biggest component of SBYSF’s activities. PAL youth have fully embraced the experience, according to PAL Executive Director Judie Lugo, and they typically find it incredibly rewarding. The kids “love the thrill of learning something new, the challenge of mastering it, and the unique connection they feel to the environment around them,” Lugo shared. “It’s been a truly transformative experience for many, building confidence, teamwork, and a sense of adventure.”
SBYSF offers programs year-round, but the summer is by far the most active. Lessons go from beginner level, with kids as young as 6, through the highest level of youth competition. The nonprofit nature of the foundation and generous support from the S.B. Yacht Club and its members enables SBYSF to keep fees lower than they otherwise would be.
SBYSF has a large, impressive fleet of sail and powerboats, including 24 Optimist dinghies, 10 Optimist SailQubes, 11 CFJ sailboats, Club 420s, Lasers, and RIBs. At the high school level, youth participate in competitions organized by the Pacific Coast Interscholastic Sailing Association (PCISA).

He recounted witnessing this “magic” one day, when he saw a teenage instructor calmly transform a frightened young beginner into a confident sailor, a feat that could only have come from the experiences she had received from the foundation. With the community’s continued support and hard work, Wilson related, he expects the magic to continue for many years.

TEACHER’S FUND LAUNCHES 2024 BACK TO SCHOOL SUPPLIES DRIVE
The non-profit Teacher’s Fund has launched its annual Back to School Supplies Drive with the goal of raising $75,000 to purchase educational supplies for Santa Barbara-area teachers and students.
This year’s fundraising drive launches August 20 and runs through September 20. Anyone interested in donating to the drive can do so here http://www.tfsuppliesdrive. com/. Donors can contribute to specific items requested by teachers or submit a general donation. Common teacher wish list items include STEM supplies, learning toys, art supplies, electronics, and classroom furniture. Alternatively, individuals and organizations can sponsor the supplies drive. Sponsorship levels start at $250 and include social media mentions and entries for the chance to win one of numerous prizes and other recognitions. All proceeds from the fundraising campaign go to help kindergarten through 12th grade teachers at Santa Barbara-area schools, from Carpinteria through to the Santa Ynez Valley. So far, each year’s drive has surpassed expectations, with the 2023 drive bringing in over $76,000.
“We are so thankful for all the generous support from the community over the years. Their contributions make a real difference for our hard-working Santa Barbara teachers and their students,” said Brianna Johnson, a realtor for Village Properties and supplies drive committee co-chair. “We’re optimistic that this year our wonderful community will once again step up and help us reach our fundraising goal.”
The Teacher's Fund was created in 2002 by Renee Grubb, the owner of Village Properties, as a way for teachers to request much needed supplies for their classrooms. Since then, the Teacher's Fund has donated more than $2.1 million to Santa Barbara-area schools. Over the years, as schools have faced increasing budget constraints, the Teacher’s Fund has stepped up its fundraising to provide ever greater support for teachers.
