Mixing Metals: To Match or Mingle?
Whether you’re decorating a cozy corner or revamping an entire room, selecting all of the finishes can be daunting. It’s easy to spend hours down the rabbit hole of Pinterest, only to emerge feeling more confused. Which shade of blue paint is best? Will this tile work with my cabinets? Should all of the metal finishes in the room be the same … or can I mix them?
In interior design trends, mixing metals has increased in popularity over the past few years. When well done, mixed metals in kitchens, bathrooms, and other living spaces can create a “collected-over-time” look by bringing visual depth and interest to a room. Varying metal finishes across hardware, furniture, lighting, and other fixtures adds character that a “matchy-matchy” look may lack.
So, what’s the rule on using metal finishes in your home?
Although there’s no perfect formula for determining how to mix metals, there’s a way to mix metals so it doesn’t look like a hot mess. Read on for my tips to pull off this trend and achieve a curated, designer look!
First, let’s start with how many metals to choose: I recommend selecting two metals per room. Personally, I would use the same two metals throughout the home, rather than having different combinations in each room. Start by selecting the dominant metal, which should account for approximately 60 to 75 percent of the metal accents in the room. Common dominant metals include satin nickel, polished chrome, or brushed brass.
Next, add a complementing accent metal. Like any good relationship, the metals should work well together, rather than fight each other. To achieve this, it’s about finding the right balance with metals.
Some metals are cool and some metals are warm, and using one of each will help create balance in the room. Chrome, stainless steel, and nickel are cool, while brass, gold, and copper are warm. To achieve balance, I recommend selecting one metal that is cool and one that is
warm. Black is neutral, which means it pairs well with both groups.
But what about the finish of the metal itself? Some may disagree with me, but I recommend using the same finish when mixing metals to help provide cohesion in the design. If you’ve selected brushed antique brass as your primary metal, then adding another brushed metal as your accent would be ideal.
One rule that is important to follow is to keep metals the same per item group. For example, it would look odd to have half of the kitchen pendants in black and half of them in chrome. Instead, select black for all of the pendants and use chrome for the cabinet hardware and sink faucet.
And, lastly, choose what you love! Decorating your space is about personal expression. If you adore a particular metal, find ways to incorporate it. Mixing metals isn’t about rigid rules it’s about creating an intentional look tailored to your taste.
I’d love to see how you mixed metals in your home! Tag me on social media @vacayrentaldesign

On September 28, about 400 guests enjoyed Sips & Ships, an annual event of the Santa Barbara Sea Shell Association (SBSSA) to raise funds for its familyrun youth sailing program. The sprawling event encompassed all of Santa Barbara Harbor’s Marina One, where 17 boats welcomed guests on board and docks were lined with food, beverages, and silent auction offerings.
Many guests were former or current SBSSA participants, while others came out simply to enjoy the scenic harbor, tour beautiful boats, and enjoy the festivities. This year even featured live entertainment, with the band Spring Loaded performing on the bow of a boat. Owners of motorboats and sailboats generously welcomed guests on board, where they were free to tour the boats above and below deck and sit down, chat, and relax.
Boat owners, including Paula and Jeff Clark, are enthusiastic supporters of SBSSA. The Clarks had spent every Sunday from April to October for 12 years with Sea Shells, with their three kids having participated in the program. Their eight-foot dinghy in their Sea Shells days was their first boat, and the next one, 20 years later, was Sea Larks, a 50-foot Xquisite Yacht X5 Sail Catamaran, upon which they welcomed guests at the event. They have traveled in this gorgeous boat around Central America and the Caribbean, and next year plan on heading to the South Pacific. “The Sea Shell organization has a special place in our hearts.” Paula related. “We raised our kids at Sea Shell beach [and] made friendships that have lasted the test of time and memories to cherish forever.”
Founded in 1948, the all-volunteer nonprofit still operates Sunday afternoons from April to October on West Beach. Parents organize the events, teach the kids to sail, and maintain the boats. The first three sessions provide basic instruction, and then the new young skippers pair up with experienced skippers and head out on the water. Each Sunday, there are four kids’ races and one adult race. The program teaches skill building and resilience building dealing with, for example, a capsized boat and chilly or choppy waters noted SBSSA Boardmember Mark Matthews, a parent and accomplished sailor. “Plus, it’s a great family day at the beach and just a whole lot of fun.”
A defining attribute of the program is the inclusion of the whole family. Another key feature, according to
Commodore Andrew Bermond, himself a parent, is the emphasis on the autonomy of the kids, who are referred to as skippers because they are the captain in command. Initially, the skipper is often intimidated, Bermond related, so having a parent or other trusted person helps build a sense of security, and then they develop the courage to sail solo. Currently, 40 families participate, with about an equal number of boys and girls. This year, the Novice Fleet has kids ages 7 to 12, but this fleet and the advanced fleets are open to kids up to age 18. While some parents are on the boats helping the kids, others are onshore under beach umbrellas enjoying watching loved ones and new and old friends experience the thrill of learning to sail.
Although the races are primarily for fun, according to Matthews, there are also “some hotly contested racing at the front of the fleet and then races within races in the middle and there’s always a big round of applause for the kid, or adult, that brings up the back of the pack.”
Thanks to an existing fleet of boats and this annual fundraiser, SBSSA keeps costs relatively low to make the program as financially accessible as it can. Annual membership is $200 and boat rental $300. Participants can also buy their own boat and store it with SBSSA for a $175 fee per year. A couple of donated boats are available each year to low-income families.
Two safety boats are a constant presence to deal with the inevitable capsize. SBSSA has 30 Sabots (sailing dinghies) for novices, and some Open Skiffs, RS Teras, and RS Fevas.
SBSSA is very welcoming to parents with no sailing experience. In recent years, only about half of the parents come in with experience. Some of these newbies opt to learn to sail with their kids, but for those who don’t want to, there are plenty of other parents who volunteer to do so. A Sportsmanship Trophy is awarded each year to the skipper who is the best sport. According to Bermond, “a few older skippers have realized that helping novice skippers learn to sail is a great way to become a candidate for this award. Others just enjoy the experience of being a mentor.”
SBSSA has raised $75,000 to renovate its storage sheds near the Harbor’s boat launch, but needs to raise another $50,000 for the project, which seeks to ensure safe storage for future generations.

VOTE NO ON PROP 5: STOP THE TAX HIKES ON HOMEOWNERS
As President of the Santa Barbara Association of REALTORS®, it is crucial that I highlight why we must vote NO on Proposition 5, a measure that could have serious implications for both our housing market and property tax system.
WHAT PROPOSITION 5 DOES
Proposition 5, on the 2024 California ballot, seeks to lower the voter approval threshold from two-thirds to 55% for local bonds that fund affordable housing and public infrastructure. Bonds are a way for the government to borrow money that is then paid back with interest. On the surface, this seems like a way to streamline the funding of essential housing projects and community services, but it comes with significant risks.
INCREASED PROPERTY TAX BURDEN
By making it easier for local governments to issue bonds, Proposition 5 puts Californians at risk of increased property taxes. These bonds are repaid through property taxes, meaning that if more bond measures pass, property taxes will rise as the cost to pay off these bonds tends to range from $1.70 to $2.00 per each $1.00 borrowed over the life of the bond. For homeowners, especially those already struggling to afford California's high cost of living, this could make homeownership even more difficult to obtain and sustain. For renters, it is possible that these expenses could be passed on to tenants making affordability that much worse. Additionally, commercial property taxes would be impacted causing increased
prices for all consumers. While addressing housing needs is important, Proposition 5's approach threatens to place too much financial pressure on Californians for too little gain.
VAGUE LANGUAGE AND UNCLEAR OVERSIGHT
Another issue with Proposition 5 is the vague language surrounding what qualifies as “affordable housing” and "infrastructure projects." Without clear definitions, bond funds could be used for a variety of projects that may not directly benefit affordable housing or the community at large. Additionally, while Prop 5 includes some oversight measures like audits and citizens' committees, lowering the approval threshold diminishes the rigorous voter scrutiny currently required for these significant financial commitments and the expenses of these audits can come from the funds raised by the bond measure, thereby limiting any positive impact it may have on the community.
EROSION OF PROPOSITION 13 PROTECTIONS
One of the most significant concerns with Proposition 5 is how it weakens the protections provided by Proposition 13, the 1978 law that limits property tax increases to no more than 2% annually, based on the home's purchase price. Prop 13 was designed to provide predictability and stability for homeowners.
Prop 5 circumvents these protections by lowering the approval threshold that has been in place since California was made a state. The result would be a wave of new tax increases, undermining the affordability and financial predictability that
Prop 13 was meant to secure.
Prop 13 is crucial for keeping homeownership within reach for millions of Californians. For long-term homeowners, it prevents them from being priced out of their homes due to rising property values. For new homeowners, it provides predictability, ensuring they aren’t hit with unforeseen tax hikes as the value of their homes increases. These protections are essential for creating a stable and fair housing market, which would be threatened by the lowered threshold proposed by Prop 5.
CONCLUSION: WHY VOTE NO
Everyone understands the importance of creating more affordable housing, but Proposition 5 is not the right path forward. It risks destabilizing our property tax system, increasing the tax burden on Californians, and weakening the vital protections of Proposition 13. Californians, particularly homeowners, depend on the stability and affordability that Prop 13 provides. Voting NO on Proposition 5 will protect our community from unnecessary tax hikes and maintain the safeguards that help make homeownership still a possibility.
Let’s focus on finding solutions without jeopardizing the dream of homeownership across California. Vote NO on Proposition 5.
