Paint Colors Demystified

If you walk into most home improvement stores, you will find confused souls standing in front of the paint chips, overwhelmed, and trying to decide which direction they want to go with their room du jour. Painting your walls is a big project that has a direct impact on the look and feel of the space. Let’s simplify the process so you can add instant value and transform your space with confidence.

Paint is one of the easiest, most affordable ways to change the look and feel of a room. But with endless options, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Follow these expert tips to take the guesswork out of selecting the perfect shade and finish.

Start with a Scheme

If you are redesigning your whole room, start with some inspiration. I usually start with a fabric I love that I’ll be using as an accent for pillows or window treatments. If you choose a fabric that has a pattern and colors you love, you can pull together the other colors in the room from that fabric swatch, including paint! For example, choose a floral or stripe that has several color options, and then take it with you to the paint store. This way, you can hold your fabric directly against the paint chips you are considering. You can see what works and what doesn’t. Whether you are staying neutral or going bold and moody, taking items with you that will show up elsewhere in the design will ensure you keep everything coordinated and connected.

How to Choose the Right Color

I think the biggest mistake I see people make with paint is that they choose colors that are far too pigmented. If you are intentionally going for a moody feel in the room, then the more pigment the better. However, I see the most success with paint in rooms where the color on the walls acts more as a beautiful backdrop to the other decor and art in the space. Warm neutrals and soft grays allow other items like vintage pieces and beautiful fabric to take center stage. Even when selecting a true color for the walls, I always find myself making my way to the lightest and airiest version of the color I’m looking for. Whether it’s blue, green, or lavender, I’m always looking for a shade that looks like the color is a whisper across the walls, instead of demanding attention as soon as you enter the room. My rule of thumb is always that softer and lighter colors create the most cozy and serene experiences.

How to Wall Sample

My general rule for sampling paint is to make sure you edit your choices. After you’ve identified your general color direction, narrow down your choices to three to five shades before sampling. Apply swatches directly to your wall and observe them over a few days. Make sure you notice them at different times of day because the colors change depending on the amount of sunlight and shadow in the space. Light changes everything, so make sure the color feels right in both daylight and evening glow. Once you’ve lived with them for a few days, trust your instincts and pick your winner.

Pick the Perfect Sheen

The simple way to look at choosing a sheen is this: The higher the sheen, the more reflective the surface will look, and the easier it is to clean. Flat paint creates a beautiful soft look, and it is great for ceilings; however, it is very impractical for a family with kids. My particular favorites for families are eggshell or velvet, as they still have that softer feel and can be wiped well with a sponge or towel. Trim and millwork should have a higher sheen than your

walls, like semi-gloss or satin, to add depth and dimension. Higher sheens reflect more light and clean up more easily, making them practical for busy households while still achieving a polished look.

With the right paint choices, you can transform your space into a reflection of your style and personality. Remember, the walls are more than just a background they set the tone for everything else in the room. Whether you’re going bold and moody or soft and serene, approach your paint project with intention, and you’ll create a space that feels perfectly you.

Gail Arnold’s Favorite Nonprofits of the Year

As many of you contemplate end-of-year donations, I present here four Santa Barbara–based nonprofits that do extraordinary work. Your donations would enable these organizations to serve more of those in need.

CARE4Paws

This treasured nonprofit provides critical assistance to low-income pet owners, preventing pets from going hungry or without needed veterinary care or from being relinquished to a shelter. With its two mobile clinics, CARE4Paws provides free and low-cost spay and neuter procedures (2,900 procedures this year) and other veterinary and wellness care (more than 16,000 dogs and cats served this year). CARE4Paws also provides free pet food and supplies to low-income and homeless pet owners; provides foster care for pets of domestic violence victims; and funds for veterinary care at other facilities.

The more community support it receives, the more suffering it can alleviate and the more pets who can remain with their owners. Its annual Happy Tails fundraiser is always fun and engaging. To make an online donation, go to care4paws.org

Santa Barbara Rescue Mission

This oh-so-valuable nonprofit provides food and shelter year-round to homeless individuals in our community. By year’s end, it will have provided nearly 50,000 nights of shelter and more than 75,000 meals. The Santa Barbara Rescue Mission (SBRM) also runs 12-month residential substance abuse treatment programs, which have success rates many times higher than national averages and operating costs that are a fraction of the cost of commercial programs. Since program inception in 1997, more than 1,000 men and women have graduated with their lives truly transformed.

SBRM receives no government funding, relying on the community for support. Its passionate supporters gather each year at Dos Pueblos Ranch for its fundraiser, the Bayou. To make an online donation, go to sbrm.org

Immigrant Legal Defense Center

This incredible nonprofit with an amazingly talented and dedicated staff provides legal representation, case management, and therapy to undocumented immigrants struggling in the Tri-County region and facing deportation. Presently, the Immigrant Legal Defense Center (ILDC) represents 290 individuals, 62 percent of whom are children and youth. It maintains a waitlist only for children and youth, which currently stands at more than 100.

With the incoming administration prioritizing mass deportations, ILDC will be ramping up its legal services for detained and non-detained immigrants. Also, it will be hosting several workshops to train community members on immigrant rights so they, in turn, can educate immigrants, with a goal of replacing their fear with knowledge of their rights.

While ILDC does receive some state funding, community support is crucial to meet the huge demand that already exists, let alone what lies ahead under the new administration. To make an online donation, go to sbimmigrantdefense.org

SEE International

Based in Goleta, this exceptionally impactful nonprofit operates mainly in the developing world, where its

650 volunteer ophthalmologists perform sight-restoring cataract surgeries. Clinics run for a few days to a couple of weeks, with on average 100 people regaining sight. Having volunteer teams, who pay their own travel expenses, coupled with donated and carefully sourced medical supplies enable this efficient nonprofit to turn every $100 donated into the gift of sight for a blind individual.

Locally, in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties, SEE provides free eye exams and glasses, serving 6,000 residents this year. In October, SEE celebrated 50 years and 750,000 sight-restoring surgeries. To make an online donation, go to seeintl.org

Gabe Grandcolas, an accomplished real estate professional with Knight Real Estate Group of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table (SBART), a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and celebrating local youth athletics.

Grandcolas’ reputation as a dedicated professional, former athlete, and engaged community leader was instrumental in his selection for this prestigious position. A local standout, Gabe was a pitcher for the Santa Barbara Dons baseball team, earning three varsity letters from 2012 to 2014.

Reflecting on his own experiences, Gabe recalls attending SBART events during his high school years, making his new role especially meaningful.

Deconstruction versus Demolition

We live in a throwaway economy. Advertising, built-in obsolescence, and undervaluing labor contribute to this system.

Right-to-repair laws are pushing against this embedded pattern, with California being one of the leaders and early adopters. The construction industry generates massive amounts of waste when buildings are demolished or renovated 22 percent of everything in landfills in California, according to a statewide waste study. When demolished, a typical

2,000-square-foot house produces around 240 cubic yards of debris.

Buildings account for 40 percent of global use of raw materials and are one of the biggest contributors to greenhouse-gas emissions. Deconstruction is an alternative to demolition. It is a careful process that involves taking apart a building to salvage reusable materials. Disassembling a building can be time-consuming and requires skilled workers, but it reduces the need for new materials, conserves energy, and minimizes environmental impact.

Offsetting the time issue is the tax advantage that the building owner can gain. IRS rules allow an owner to get a tax credit for materials being salvaged for reuse or recycling. After a site visit, an IRS qualified appraiser prepares an inventory of salvageable materials with their “fair market value” numbers, usually about a third of the cost of the same materials when purchased new. Separately, the owner contracts with a deconstruction contractor or their builder if the crew is skilled in deconstruction. Since 75-90 percent of materials in a home can be reused, repurposed, or recycled, the tax benefits often add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars. However, these tax deductions can be claimed only when materials are donated to a nonprofit organization such as Habitat for Humanity or The ReUse People (TRP).

(like Habitat’s Reuse Stores). This requirement has been mostly offset by one successful program that sells most of the salvable materials on site before deconstruction begins. The final challenge is how to get contractors to use salvaged materials in their projects.

Why has deconstruction not gone mainstream? As mentioned, it is working against a system designed to make it easy for people to throw things away. Taking longer can also be a deterrent, but that can be lessened by disassembling interior spaces while waiting for permits. To encourage deconstruction, a community needs property with a building dedicated to storage and display of materials

Although not mainstream, deconstruction does happen. Locally, the Miramar Hotel tile reuse project in Montecito donated large quantities of iconic blue roof tiles to affordable housing projects in the community. Rebuild Green deconstructs about 100 houses a year in the Bay Area. In 2016, Portland became the first city to institute an ordinance requiring deconstruction of single-family houses built before 1940 slated for removal. Half a dozen other cities have followed Portland’s example. Palo Alto requires the deconstruction of all residential and commercial buildings slated for removal regardless of age. Boulder mandates 75 percent of buildings by weight be diverted from landfills. Can Santa Barbara follow these examples?
