Eye-Catching Queen Anne–Style Homes
These are often the type of homes that you can’t help noticing as you walk along our streets streets such as Bath or Laguna. Sometimes, it seems like people piled on all the exterior details they could afford to show off their wealth. These Queen Anne–style homes are often called “Victorian homes,” but technically, a Victorian home is any home that was built during Queen Victoria’s reign (1837-1901). Queen Anne–style homes were popular from 1880 to 1910, and somehow, they are not at all related to Queen Anne, who reigned from 1702 to 1714.
Here in Santa Barbara, our city’s list of Designated Structures of Merit indicates that Queen Anne–style homes were built here from 1873 to 1910. Many of these homes have two stories. One-story Queen Anne–style homes are usually called Queen Anne cottages or Folk Victorian. The roofs of Queen Anne–style homes are usually steeply pitched, and some have decorative roof cresting along the top. (Cresting looks like a fancy metal fence along the roof ridge.) Many of these metallic details have not survived the years sometimes lightning or
by
rust was the culprit, and sometimes it was because homeowners removed the metalwork during World War I or World War II when people were encouraged to contribute metal to be recycled for military use. Roof cresting that remained on your home during the war years was a very visible symbol that you were not “doing your bit.”
Some Queen Anne–style homes also had towers (round, square, octagonal) to further draw your eye upward, as well as decorative details under a gable on the front façade. On a modest version of a Queen Anne–style home, sometimes the only decoration is tucked up underneath the gable. I’ve noticed that a number of homes in Santa Barbara have a wooden ornament under the gable that resembles a rising sun.
Very often the exterior walls are covered with one or more types of decorative shingles. Sometimes there will be one style on the second floor, and another style on the first floor. Occasionally, the very decorative “fish-scale shingles” are used. These have a bottom edge shaped like a semicircle. Windows can be noticeable as well. Bay windows are common, as well as the use of stained glass
in interesting patterns.
Moving down to the front porch, decorative spindles, railings, brackets, and spandrels were common means of adding details. Although Queen Anne–style homes often had plenty of “look at me” ornamentation, they were often painted somber colors: tan, brown, dark green, or maroon. Definitely not the fluorescent colors that hippies painted Queen Anne–style homes in the HaightAshbury district in San Francisco in the 1960s. The William Carson Mansion in Eureka, California, is probably the most famous Queen Anne–style home in the U.S. It is painted in historically appropriate quiet colors.
Some Queen Anne–style homes in Santa Barbara that you may have noticed are at 501 Chapala Street and 901 Bath Street. I wrote about a couple of Queen Anne–style cottages at 519 Brinkerhoff Street and 324 North Soledad Street in this column in recent years, and I’d love to write about more. Contact me if you have one that you’d like me to include in a future column through my website below.
Please do not disturb the residents of these homes.

Reducing Chemicals in Mainstream Agriculture
by
Since the 1950s, farmers across the world have used chemical treatments of their seeds to protect them from pests, pathogens, and disease. The downside of this practice has been negative impacts on human health and the environment. A new chemical-free treatment, however, has been developed, thoroughly tested, and widely deployed in Scandinavia, gaining mainstream use there. Seeds are treated with steam rather than chemicals.
ThermoSeed, the Swedish company that has pioneered this biological innovation, uses intense bursts of steam to pasteurize seeds. It discovered that different types of seeds have different optimum requirements for humidity, temperature, and exposure times. Consequently, it has developed a tailored recipe for each type of seed. This pas-
teurization process has proven to deliver yields comparable to, or even better than, traditional chemical seed treatment.
Initially, ThermoSeeds were only used by organic farmers, but within half a dozen years, they started making inroads into conventional farming. Farmers tend to be wary of innovations, especially of non-chemical solutions, so the process of adoption has been relatively slow. A Swedish agricultural co-op that supplies about half of Sweden’s seeds adopted the steam seed treatment in 2008, and Norway’s large co-op got on board in 2011. In Sweden alone, an estimated 3,000 cubic meters of chemicals have been avoided.
One problem for farmers is the dust associated with chemically treated seeds, which gets all over them when they open seed bags and pour them into bins or hoppers.
Steam-treated seeds are easier to handle and better for their health. Another notable advantage is that unused seeds can be reused. Unlike chemically treated seeds, they can be safely fed to livestock or sold, cutting down on disposal expenses, or even planted the following year.
The inspiration for steaming seeds came to Kenneth Alness, the inventor of ThermoSeed, when reading about farmers treating seeds with hot water before the introduction of artificial pesticides. Although organic farmers continued to use this process after chemical seed treatment became widespread, it was inefficient and expensive due to the costly process of drying the seeds after bathing them in hot water.
New pesticide reduction laws in the European Union are spurring the adoption of pasteurized steam seeds beyond Scandinavia. The European goal is to reduce the use and risk of chemical pesticides by 50 percent by 2030. To spread into the developing world, however, the hurdle of high-cost equipment needs to be removed. Alness is addressing this issue by developing a scaled-down version of his ThermoSeed machine that will make it cost-effective to utilize the steam technology for smaller markets. His goal is to expand this chemical-free technology to farmers around the world, thus cutting their dependency on pesticides without sacrificing yields.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU: 2025 SBAOR PRESIDENT SUMMER KNIGHT
Here we are, already in mid-January, and our thoughts are with those impacted by the devastating fires in the Los Angeles area. The destruction has been unimaginable, and we extend our heartfelt support to everyone affected. If you know someone in need of housing, the members of the Santa Barbara Association of REALTORS® are actively working to assist by finding rentals or other housing solutions. Please reach out to your local REALTOR® to explore how they can help. Additionally, if you would like to make a donation, please feel free to reach out to the Association and they can provide you with a list of resources.
As we embark on a new year, the Santa Barbara Association of REALTORS® Board presidency has transitioned from Michele Allyn to Santa Barbara native Summer Knight. Michele recently sat down with Summer to discuss her vision and goals for 2025.
What are you most excited about for 2025?
I plan to work hard, not only for our members, but for the community, as REALTORS® are an integral part of our County. Not only d?o? we ‘sell’ homes, but we help families build stability and financial wealth through homeownership. Working with a first-time buyer is extremely rewarding. And I am hoping to highlight all we do for the community in terms of volunteering and donating to important local causes.
Do you have concerns for 2025?
We already knew insurance was a large issue for Californians and the devastating LA fires have certainly not helped. So, insurability and the effect it will have on homeowners and the cost of ownership will be a hot topic.
Tell us a little about yourself.
Well, I was fortunate to be born and raised in Santa Barbara (a 4th generation local) and that my family is still in town. I will admit to being a workaholic, but I have been blessed with 5 kids (aged 24, 23, 21, 19 and 13) and will be married for 30 years this summer. My family loves to travel and we feel exposing our kids to different cultures and customs has been instrumental in their having a well-rounded outlook on life. We have been to 36 countries! I also love to read, hike and walk on the beach. I volunteer with 3 other local non-profits as well, if I am not running a million miles a minute, I go crazy!
Thank you, Summer Knight, for helping us to navigate 2025 as President of the Santa Barbara Association of REALTORS®. We look forward to your leadership and supporting you this year.
has been a member of the Santa Barbara Association of Realtors for over 20 years and currently serves as the President of the Board of Directors. Reach Summer at 805-886-1261 or summer.k.knight@gmail.com.
