Cute Villa Constance Condo T he balconies of the Villa Constance condominiums sport metal awnings with sweet scalloped edges and decorative, circular-patterned white iron railings. I’ve admired these cute retro details for years, every time I drive past, which seems to happen quite frequently. Given their central location — spanning the block between State and Chapala and Constance and Alamar — it’s not too surprising that they feel so familiar. Visiting an open house on Sunday at Villa Constance South, it was fun to see these ornamental elements up close and imagine what it would be like to live here. Villa Constance is made up of separate, small two-story buildings, each housing eight units. The appointed address was easy to find, with one entrance on Constance Avenue and a back
door opening to the interior gardens of the complex. I walked through the landscaped pathways of Villa Constance, admiring the lush green lawns and perfectly manicured plants, bushes, and palm trees towering overhead. A long, low fountain gurgles near the building, delighting both eyes and ears as it sparkles in the sunlight with a gentle splashing background sound. Inside, a carpeted interior staircase led me up to the doorway of unit number 8. With its one bedroom and one bath, it’s notable that my first impression of this home was how expansive it feels. I stepped through the front doorway to find myself in a large living room with sliding glass doors opening out onto a balcony that runs the length of the room. Whether it’s the big balcony itself or the mountain view that it frames, the living room is a primary reason why this home feels so spacious. An L-shaped alcove between the living room and the kitchen makes an ideal dining space or could be fashioned into an office or even a kids’ play area. While I don’t generally think of a onebedroom home as a family abode, with a little creativity, this one could work. The kitchen itself is long and narrow, in a typical galleystyle design, with the sink on one side and the oven, stove, and refrigerator across from it. I walked in to check out the view from the window on the far wall and was delighted to find that it provides another great mountain vista. Standing in the kitchen, I realized that it has an almost identical layout to my own kitchen. While it’s not ideal for a crowd, I love that everything in my kitchen is within arm’s reach.
In the dining area, doorways lead to the bathroom and the bedroom, with storage cabinets in the hallway between them. The bathroom has been upgraded, with a glass-enclosed shower/bath combo, white-tile floor, and extra counter space. Double windows provide yet another glimpse of the mountains and palm trees. If you’re tired of the views, don’t even bother looking into the bedroom. This bright, airy room has huge windows on two adjoining walls, providing a panorama to rival the living room’s vantage point. The room itself is large as well, balancing out the rest of the home. Other convenient features of this home include a covered garage, an elevator as an alternative to the staircase, and its location within the coveted Peabody School District. The association fees cover all utilities, as well as all of the exterior upkeep. So a lucky new owner can admire the manicured landscaping while enjoying gorgeous views from their stylishly retro balcony perch all year long without ever lifting a finger.

State Street Ballet Puts On Exquisite Evening
J
ust like its productions and past galas, State Street Ballet’s gala this year was an exquisite affair from start to finish. Held at the Four Seasons Biltmore on September 23, the event raised about $80,000 for the ballet’s performances and its education and outreach programs. The evening began with cocktails in the intimate and lush Palmera Garden across the walkway from the Loggia Ballroom. While Chris Fossek performed his own compositions on guitar, the sold-out crowd of 180 guests mingled and celebrated the start of the company’s 24th season. Before entering the Loggia Ballroom, guests were greeted by dancers in white feather costumes from An American Tango. The ballroom was elegantly appointed with goldfabric-covered chairs surrounding tables adorned with black-and-white linens and lamps with shades etched with dancer silhouettes. A center stage allowed for an intimate experience for all the guests, with no one seated more than a table away from the stage. Between three scrumptious dinner courses, guests were treated to superb dance vignettes: “Buona Sera” by Cecily MacDougall and James Folsom, “Electra” by Amara Galloway, and “Tarantella” by various company dancers. During the program, Executive and Artistic Director Rodney Gustafson shared his excitement for the upcoming season, which features five performances at three different venues. Gustafson explained how the company’s work goes far beyond Santa Barbara, with past tours including China, Taiwan, Chile, and states across the U.S. The evening honored longtime boardmember and supporter Arlyn Goldsby, who Gary Dorfman related “leads with her heart, and her heart is truly about the ballet.” He thanked her for all her work and financial support over the many years. Auctioneer Andrew Firestone entertained the guests with a lively auction and then was joined by Leila Drake for a paddle raise for pointe shoes, which dancers wear at a cost of $100 per pair and last sometimes only a performance and at most a week. Fundraising efforts in general are imperative as ticket sales bring in only about 40 percent of the organization’s income. In addition to putting on performances, State Street Ballet offers three training programs: a Summer Intensive program for dancers ages 12-21, a year-round Professional Track Program, and Gustafson Dance, which offers instruction for all levels.
The company does extensive community outreach. Its Library Dances program links classic literature with dance. Students at Santa Barbara Junior High School are given dance instruction, which culminates in performances that bring to life a piece of literature the students are studying in school. Dancers provide one-on-one mentoring, which provides many benefits beyond dance training. This year’s production is Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. Each year, State Street Ballet does special performances for area youth. The company provides schools with a study guide to enhance the educational value and enjoyment of the performance. This year, about 2,400 students will see The Jungle Book at The Granada Theatre. State Street Ballet also provides complimentary tickets for its performances to various nonprofit organizations and provides a couple of scholarships for its Summer Intensive program. State Street Ballet’s 2018-19 season features Chaplin this Saturday, October 6 (read more on p. 50); The Nutcracker December 15-16; and The Jungle Book March 24, 2019, all at The Granada Theatre. It also includes the mixed repertory program Ballroom at the Lobero Theatre April 13-14, 2019, and contemporary dance works in Modern Masters at the New Vic on May 10-11, 2019. The company will be on tour this season in Spokane, Washington; Durango, Colorado; Fresno; and Flagstaff, Arizona.

rothers Joe and Tom Mathews started out when they were kids, sweeping sawdust at their dad’s cabinetmaking shop. As they got older, they came in on weekends and during summer vacation to absorb the trade. Then it was off to college to get in some more book work before coming back to help run the place as business ramped up and the small shop became a big shop. occupies the corner of Nopal and Quinientos streets in Santa Barbara’s lower Eastside industrial neighborhood, directly across the street from where Joe and Tom’s dad, Ron Mathews, opened it in 1969. “Working as a foreman in a construction company at the time, my dad saw an opportunity to build cabinets,” Joe says. “He started out renting
a microscopic room with a table saw in it.” Today, Architectural Millwork hums and buzzes inside a 19,000-square-foot facility with a showroom, conference space, upstairs offices, and, of course, a state-ofthe-art woodworking shop. Joe and Tom’s crew consists of draftsmen, estimators, project managers, and more than 20 sets of hands in production and installation. You name it: cabinets, doors, windows, moldings. All of it expertly crafted to look good, function perfectly, and last a long time, like the quarter-sawn white-oak ticket counter at the Santa Barbara train station. And there’s everything from big jobs, such as fabricating dozens of identical wardrobes for dorms at Westmont College, to “a custom fireplace mantel for the little old lady up the street,” says Joe, who understands the bond between man and wood. “Wood is a very therapeutic, enjoyable product to work with,” he says. “It’s the feel. The smell. From working with your hands on a small piece to the heat from the fire in your cabin.” Then he circles back to the realities of running a business: “But it’s a whole different thing to do it as a living,” he explains. “You really have to be on your game. It’s all about relationships — listen-
ing to your clients and understanding their needs. You have to be relentless about taking care of them.” In that respect, Joe and Tom are big on communication platforms more traditional than texts and email. Call your clients, says Joe. Meet them, shake hands, and have face-to-face conversations about custom bifolding glass doors (pictured above). In business for nearly half a century, Architectural Millwork is building pieces for the children of some of their former clients. “We try to grow with our clients,” says
Joe, a sentiment shared by Giffin & Crane. “Working with Bruce and Geoff is the best,” Joe says. “They have great staff, and the work flows well. They’re honest, and they pay their bills on time: 100 percent professional. “At the end of the day,” Joe adds, “it’s not just Giffin & Crane building a house. It’s Giffin & Crane and 40 subcontractors building a house. They know that, and that’s why we all succeed together.”
