Mid-Century Magic on the Mesa

ne has to get creative when one’s home doesn’t include a garage. I realize this is a first-world problem, but through some quirk of the universe, the past four houses I’ve lived in have been garage-less. I’ve kept camping gear in my bedroom closet, bicycles in the hallway, and shuffled beach chairs from one car trunk to another. My current cottage is so compact that it doesn’t even have a broom closet. I therefore suffer from a serious case of closet envy, and you’ll catch me gawking at many of the garages in the homes that I visit with undisguised greed. That wasn’t top of mind, however, when I visited the house at 239 Cordova Drive last week. The artistry of this Mesa home charmed me before I even got through the front door. A palm tree stands majestically in a corner closest to the street, framing the face of the house with its gently draping fronds. Surrounded by a low fence with two gated entrances, the front yard is a colorful mix of native grasses, boulders,

birds of paradise, and other exotic flora. Walking up the curving path toward the red Dutch door, I felt as if I were about to experience an abode more interesting than your average Mesa tract home. And I was right. Built in 1958, this three-bedroom, twobath, single-story home has a long, low profile with mid-century modern lines. Through the distinctive front door lies a combination living room, dining room, and kitchen, forming an airy great room that’s cheery, livable, and filled with artful details. The kitchen has a perfect blend of open and covered shelving and cabinets in a neutral palette of wood and white, with stainless appliances, a farmhouse sink, and multiple surfaces for both meal prep and conversation. With a wood-topped breakfast bar on one side and a tall set of cabinets on another, the kitchen is perfectly defined without any enclosing walls. The living room has a fireplace against the far wall and glass-fronted pocket doors that slide open to reveal an office with built-in custom cabinetry and a desk. French doors from the dining area open out onto a covered patio and a dreamy backyard. Outside, a trellis covers a patio large enough for comfortable dining, plus a separate area where a massive stone fire pit promises to be another favorite gathering spot. A large lawn is surrounded by walls high enough for complete privacy, covered with lush greenery and bougainvillea. Atop a raised wooden platform sits a family-sized hot tub that is sure to be used year-round.

Back inside, down a short hallway to the right of the front door lie two of the bedrooms with a full bathroom in between, sporting a colorful antique vanity and matching mirror. The back bedroom opens onto an attached two-car garage, which is definitely worth a second look. The garage contains a laundry area with a sink, plus a utility closet and plentiful built-in shelves and cabinets. The enviable amount of storage space had me daydreaming about how much more organized my life would be if I lived in this house. The master bedroom took this daydream one step further. In addition to an en-suite bathroom with a glassenclosed dual-head shower and a double farmhouse sink, the master bedroom boasts an amazing walk-in closet with more efficiency-inducing storage than just about any closet I’ve ever seen. If my organizational wheels weren’t already turning, this closet would certainly have made them spin. I walked away from this lovely Mesa house with an appreciation for its details, both artistic and structural. I’m sure that the next family that moves in will enjoy laughs around the fire pit, meals made in the cheery kitchen, and many productive hours arranging the closets and systematizing the garage storage space exactly to their specifications. Meanwhile, I’ll just keep dreaming.

Storyteller Holds Dirty 30 Anniversary Gala O n October 20, Storyteller Children’s Center held a swanky Dirty 30 Anniversary Gala at the Hotel Californian. The event netted more than $400,000 for the organization, which provides therapeutic preschool for homeless and atrisk children and comprehensive support services for the children and their families. A Rooftop Patron Party kicked off the black-tie gala, with martinis flowing and guests mingling on the ocean view deck. Another reception in the courtyard below followed, where food stations allowed the 275 guests to dine at their leisure inside or out. Andrew Firestone then welcomed the guests and shared how the evening was as much a celebration of the past 30 years and the thousands of kids who have benefited from Storyteller as it was a challenge for guests to help provide funding for Storyteller to continue its mission. After being introduced by Firestone as the one who leads with passion and compassion, Executive Director Donna Barranco Fisher explained that Storyteller’s job is to get children ready for kindergarten, the grade level which has the highest expulsion rate. Children arrive at Storyteller having experienced trauma, which has caused their brains to not develop properly. The organization provides therapeutic counseling through a partnership with CALM (Child Abuse Listening Meditation). Storyteller provides health, vision, and dental screenings, as well as speech, language, and occupational therapy. Storyteller also offers clothes where needed and a nutritious breakfast, lunch, and snack daily. Fisher emphasized how Storyteller seeks to break the cycle of poverty so that its reach goes beyond the children. Families are held accountable: Parents and guardians must work or attend school full-time. Parents and guardians are provided with therapy, education classes, case management, and referral services. In an interview, Fisher shared, “Storyteller provides children a chance at success in kindergarten and beyond. Without Storyteller’s therapeutic educational programs, many of our children would easily be expelled in kindergarten due to their challenging behaviors. Our therapeutic, intentional approach works to rewire areas in the brain, such as self-regulation, that have not developed due to early childhood trauma.” James S. Bower Foundation President Jon Clark was honored for his 16 years of service to Storyteller, including eight years as board president and as chair of the capital campaign for the purchase of the De la Vina Street facility. In presenting the award to Clark, Santa Barbara Foundation President and CEO Ron Gallo noted how Clark is driven by empathy and an instinctual sense of social justice and praised his dedication to Storyteller and the community.

Clark displayed his self-effacing nature and sense of humor before sharing how when he started at Storyteller he was driven by the shocking differences between his life and the lives of those it served — having food and shelter and feeling loved and safe. After years of involvement with the organization, he sees everyone as being on the same journey, but the families Storyteller serves are just at a different place. He shared a poignant story of someone helping his father as a youth and how he Event Cochair Rachel Stein, Event Chair Robyn Bartling, and Event Cochair Sarah McFadden views his work for Storyteller as simply paying it forward. In a spirited auction conducted by Andrew Firestone, Earl Minnis showed his tremendous support for Fisher and Storyteller by bidding $100,000 for a Pedro de la Cruz painting (which was valued at $2,500). Sister Sparrow & the Dirty Birds then took to the stage with their powerful modern soul music. Founded in 1988, Storyteller now has two centers, both at capacity, serving a total of 80 families each year. Another 133 families are on the waitlist. Just over half the families served live on the street, in shelters, or in overcrowded housBoardmember Erinn Lynch and Peter Wood ing. More than 90 percent live Boardmembers Ken Radtkey and Lizzie Peus below the 2018 Federal Poverty Guideline, which is $25,100 for a family of four. Nearly half the children have developmental delays or disabilities. Parents often suffer from substance abuse, domestic violence, or medical conditions. State and federal funding cover only about a third of Storyteller’s expenses, making fundraisers like this imperative. The cost to provide one year of comprehensive services to a family is $15,000. An anniversary fundraising campaign had the motto: Sponsor a child today and change a life forever!

It is almost as if when we aren’t busy and don’t have a full calendar, it means we aren’t important or aren’t successful.
