Chapala Street Charmer H ummingbirds have always been symbols of luck for me. They visit so fleetingly, and they move so quickly, that any sighting feels fortunate, and any extended interaction feels downright auspicious. So I was sure that it was a good sign when, to my surprise and delight, I found a hummingbird accidentally fluttering inside the master bedroom when I visited the house at 2423 Chapala Street last week. This three-bedroom, two-bath house is a charmer. Its location on the 2400 block of Chapala puts it close to Cottage Hospital, one block from State Street, an easy walk to the restaurants and shops on De la Vina, and a short uphill ramble to the Mission and its adjacent rose garden and hiking trails. It’s in the epicenter of everything. Yet the house itself sits back off the street, surrounded by a lush green lawn behind a quintessential white picket fence. A trellis over the front gate is covered with jasmine, providing an appropriately romantic entry to the storybook cottage itself. Built in 1932, the house is tan with white trim, accentuated by dark green shutters on several of the windows. Its classic cottage facade is distinguished by a Tudor-style cross-gable roofline that adds character. Two steps lead

up to a small front porch ready to welcome visitors. The charm continues on the inside of the home. The living room is to the left of the entry, with tall, vaulted, angled ceilings; hardwood floors; and a lovely brick fireplace on the far wall. The dining room is to the right, with the same romantic feel, and is open to the kitchen behind it, separated by a half wall with a breakfast bar. My first glance at the kitchen made me realize that there was more to this vintage home than I originally realized. It has all the allure of its era with plenty of bonuses. The kitchen is huge. Defined by a light tile floor, its white countertops, appliances, and custom cabinetry are set off by recessed lighting and windows looking out onto the side yard. Down a short hallway, two of the bedrooms share a bathroom in between, with the master bedroom at the back of the house. The master has the same lovely ceilings as the living room, plus several large windows. With dual sinks, a tiled walk-in shower, and a deep soaking bathtub, the master bathroom is larger and more luxurious than one would expect of a house of this period.

A side door off the hallway opens to the fully fenced, delightfully private backyard with tall hedges all around. A separate side yard can be accessed by a kitchen door and would be ideal for a vegetable garden or an enclosed pet or children’s play area. The other side of the house features a sunny brick patio perfect for outdoor dining and entertaining. But perhaps the most surprising bonus of the entire house is at the back fence. A detached two-car garage and a distinct workshop space are at the back of the property, along with two additional off-street parking spaces. All are accessed by an alley that runs the length of the block, giving this property block-to-block access and more parking than one ever expects to find downtown. I love discovering secrets, and this house feels like it has plenty of hidden treasure. I walked back into the house with a smile on my face and was delighted to learn that the hummingbird had been coaxed to freedom, flying out one of the master bedroom windows on his own. I left feeling positive that the hummingbird had been a lucky omen, and that this charming cottage’s new owner will feel the good fortune when they make this their home sweet home.

The Jacksons Host Holiday Party for Granada Donors

n December 10, 2019, the Santa Barbara Center for the Performing Arts Board Chair Palmer Jackson Jr. and his wife, Susan Jackson, hosted a lovely holiday gathering in their beautiful Montecito home for about 50 major donors and past and present boardmembers. The S.B. Center for the Performing Arts (SBCPA) operates the Granada Theatre and provides production, sales, and admin support to its eight resident companies and to the Lobero Theatre and the New Vic. The event was a lighthearted, relaxing one full of holiday cheer, with Chris Fossek providing delightful music in the dining room and guests mingling throughout the festively decorated and elegantly appointed abode. Major donors are critically important for the Granada, which does not receive ongoing financial support from any government sources and covers only half its budget through ticket sales and earned income. Donors stepped up on a grand scale to enable the restoration of the theater, which was built in 1924. The restoration was completed in 2008 at an undisclosed cost, but it exceeded the budget by $20 million, largely due to new seismic requirements and increased material costs, which gives one some idea of the magnitude of the undertaking. The result is a world-class theater for all genres of performing arts. According to SBCPA Chrisman Executive Director and President Caren Rager, the restoration has created a beautiful, state-of-the-art landmark that allows SBCPA to bring the very best in the performing arts from around the world. Rager, who has served in various capacities at SBCPA since 2002, including as director of administration and finance since 2010, assumed the helm last summer upon the retirement of Craig Springer. The theater offers about 115 public performances each year by its eight resident companies: CAMA (Community Arts Music Association), Santa Barbara Choral Society, Music Academy of the West, Opera Santa Barbara, State Street Ballet, the Santa Barbara Symphony, American Theater Guild, and UCSB Arts & Lectures, as well as numerous other premier entities. Palmer Jackson Jr., a musician and managing trustee of the Ann Jackson Family Foundation, a major benefactor to the SBCPA, has been involved with the SBCPA/ Granada for years. In an interview, Jackson shared how

the SBCPA’s resident companies are the cornerstone of the performing arts in Santa Barbara and these companies would have a hard time functioning without the facility and the subsidies SBCPA provides. Jackson noted that the Granada is one of the best venues of its size in the entire country, an opinion he related that is shared by many performers. Usage of the theater has increased in the past decade, and, according to Rager, further growth is anticipated in coming years. The theater also hosts nonprofit and other community events and private events. The SPCPA’s community outreach comes through the Jurkowitz Center for Community Engagement, which was established in 2010 with a gift from the Jurkowitz family. Each year, SBCPA provides to area nonprofits more than 2,000 free tickets to a wide range of performances. The nonprofits sell the tickets for a nominal fee, which they keep. SBCPA also provides vouchers for nonprofits to use in their fundraising, and a one- or two-day fellowship program each year for about 15 high school students interested in a theater career. Some upcoming performances of note are Pictures at an Exhibition by the Santa Barbara Symphony (Jan. 19 and 20), Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo presented by UCSB Arts & Lectures (Jan. 27), and Broadway in Santa Barbara Series’ performances of The Sound of Music (Jan. 29 and 30).
