hen my sons were growing up, I believed in letting them get messy. Sand followed us home from the beach, paint sometimes ended up on the table, and using your fingers to get the last of the chocolate pudding out of the bowl was acceptable. They cleaned up well when they needed to. But I’ll admit I avoided forcing them into white-glove situations. Keeping T-shirts white was challenge enough. They’re adults now, and they’re able to hold their own in any situation. But I had a bit of a flashback when I visited the house for sale at 396 Woodley Road in Montecito this past Sunday afternoon. I was dressed for the weather, with my rain boots on and my umbrella close at hand. When I neared the appointed address, I saw a gorgeous white modern castle on the hillside above me, getting larger as I got closer, literally rising into view as the mist cleared. My awe turned to slight nervousness. Fortunately, there were no toddlers with chocolatey fingers nearby, but the pristine house before me made me hope that my rain boots weren’t muddy, and that my umbrella wouldn’t surreptitiously drip. I forgot my fears as I stepped inside. The house is striking, but it’s so intriguing that I focused on what was around me rather than what might be dripping behind.

From the front foyer, one can either turn right to ascend a dramatic floating staircase to the bedrooms above or turn left into the common areas that make up the heart of this home. The foyer itself is crowned by a glass-and-steel ceiling high overhead that lets in light from above. I decided to tour the first floor first. Twelve-foot ceilings and dramatic lighting plus the almost-all-white decor meld with the natural beauty outside. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide not just glimpses but huge vistas of the sycamore trees nearby and the mountains beyond. The house seems to be courting these lovely views, inviting us to appreciate them from a different angle at each vantage point. The living and dining rooms have pocket-glass walls that disappear when they’re open. Even with them closed against the rain, I almost felt as if I could put my hand straight through to feel the trees beyond. With the doors open, the house would feel even larger, with wraparound patios adding even more living space to enjoy. Outside the dining room, a 15-foot flagstone waterfall delights the senses and must be especially mesmerizing on a sunny day. Inside, an equally stunning feature presides over the dining room table. It’s hard to admire the dazzling textured red chandelier with LED “flames” without cracking a smile. In the kitchen, beautiful blackveined marble countertops and imported dark oak cabinets join a huge island with both prep space and breakfast counter seating. Two luxuries that caught my eye are a builtin espresso maker and a separate pantry that doubles as an expansive wine storage area. Outside, a hidden staircase in the backyard leads to a secluded hillside spa. Making my way back toward the

foyer, I noticed a bright red-elevator. But the majestic floating stairway was my conveyance of choice. The steps are black granite, flanked by a clear glass railing that makes the staircase appear to float in a solid yet sparse architectural statement. When I commented on the striking light fixture hanging above, I learned that it was crafted by a student of Dale Chihuly’s especially for this home. At the top of the staircase, the beautiful glass ceiling I had admired from the foyer was now the floor, with a textured skylight high above it. On one side are two bedrooms, each with en-suite baths, plus a laundry room and a handy rear exit. On the other side, a short flight of steps leads to an enormous, luxurious master suite that includes a sitting room, an exercise room, two bathrooms, and two walk-in closets. Oh, and the bedroom itself, which opens out onto a large glass-walled balcony patio. Even on this drizzly day, the ocean views beyond the treetops were jaw-droppers. As I admired the view, I realized I had forgotten about my clunky rain boots, and I wasn’t afraid to reach out and touch the surfaces around me. This house reminded me that contemporary doesn’t need to be cold. This lovely modern residence is uncluttered in a calming, meditative manner. Had my rain boots squished, or my umbrella dripped, it would have been okay.

Cottage Hospital Foundation Holds Tiara Ball

ast Saturday night, in between waves of rainstorms, Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital Foundation held its grand and oh-so-elegant Tiara Ball at the Ritz-Carlton Bacara. More than 500 people RSVP’d for the event, billed as the Party of the Year, and most of them braved the foul weather to support our community nonprofit teaching hospital. The event grossed more than $500,000 for the extensive remodeling and expansion of the Emergency Department currently underway. Guests, many in smashing formal attire, some with fashionable tiaras, mingled during the cocktail hour before adjourning to the ballroom, which was exquisitely draped in red and gold satin, with silk- and velvet-dressed tables and enormous chandeliers covered in transparent silk drums. Projections of red leaves graced the walls and big screens. The ballroom was the creation of Host Committee Chair Alex Nourse, who has been at the helm for the past three balls, and her committee of 15. Nourse welcomed the guests and incoming Board Chair Greg Faulkner addressed the crowd, praising outgoing chair Steve Ainsley for setting a tone of civility, intelligence, and compassion and thanking guests for their generous support, which is necessary for Cottage to provide the excellent level of service it does. Faulkner noted how since the hospital opened in December 1891, patient care has continued uninterrupted every day; the hospital doors have never closed. He attributed this remarkable feat to dedicated and visionary physicians, excellent staff, committed volunteers, and the ongoing financial support of the Santa Barbara community. President and CEO Ron Werft gave a special shout-out to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) for its amazing job of helping staff get to the hospital during the 1/9 Debris Flow and again in the last 24 hours. After quickly thanking many others, Werft drew lots of nods and much laughter when he remarked how there are two characteristics of this event that have made it so successful: a short program and no auction. He kept his word, though before yielding the floor to Impulse Band to start the dance tunes, he did share some brief but important remarks.

In paying tribute to the staff, Werft stated that the “events of early 2018 made evident the skill, professionalism, and compassion of the caregivers at Cottage.” For two weeks, staff arrived by plane, boat, and CHP-led caravans. And every day, Werft noted, staff works quietly and consistently to serve the community. Werft shared his excitement that after 14 years of building and operating a hospital at the same time on the same site, Cottage recently completed all of the new construction. He thanked the “Dream Team” of the capital campaign: Lady Leslie Ridley-Tree, Peter MacDougall, Palmer Jackson, and Michael Towbes. He noted that while the majority of the hospital opened in 2012, the last phase added much more, including having all services of Cottage Children’s Medical Center adjacent to one another. There is a new amphitheater for medical, nursing, and community education and a museum to honor the 127 years of service to the community. The capital campaign raised $110 million from more than 6,000 donors for the $820 million project. The only remaining work is the renovation of the existing emergency room, which is slated for completion in the fall of 2020 and will feature an innovative new model of emergency care. There will be private treatment spaces, a dedicated pediatric area, and a CT scanner. Last year, the ER served about 46,000 patients. Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital is the only Level 1 Trauma Center in the region, serving all of Santa Barbara County and parts of Ventura and San Luis Obispo counties. For the entire hospital last year, there were 18,000 admissions and 134,000 outpatient visits (including ER). In closing, Werft reported how in 2018 Cottage continued to receive its unbroken string of Five Star ratings for quality care and patient safety from the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital is one of only six California hospitals — out of 450 —that are Five Star–rated. Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital is one of the other six.

The youngest of 12, he left his native Italy on or around 1912 to join his uncle in New York, building brownstones along the Hudson River by day and playing saxophone by night. Working his way across the country with his trade and talent, including a stint in the copper mines of Jerome, Arizona, Da Ros came to Santa Barbara because he’d heard the Marisol Hotel — located where Alice Keck Park Memorial Garden is today — was looking to put together a house band. Da Ros got the gig. At the same time, he launched what is now Da Ros Masonry. Naturally, his line of work required the accumulation of masonry materials, and according to his grandson, Peter Da Ros,
