Historic Mission Canyon Craftsman
T
he lovely home for sale at 2480 Foothill Road has been remodeled to include a long list of state-ofthe-art upgrades, but it remains firmly rooted in its storied past, dating back almost a hundred years. Walking through the house on a recent afternoon, I admired its modern amenities and creature comforts, all the while soaking up its history as well. The home was built on land purchased in 1903 by the Reverend George Francis Weld, a widowed Episcopal minister who moved to Santa Barbara from Boston with his infant son. Reverend Weld went on to become the rector of All Saints-by-the-Sea church in Montecito, while his son grew up and went to school on the East Coast. Upon graduation from Harvard, he purchased land adjacent to his father’s estate, at the corner of Mission Canyon Road and Laurel Canyon Road, which is now known as Foothill Road. This land included a landmark used to denote this significant corner: an oak tree growing through a boulder, known as the Mission Canyon Riven Rock. While the tree is no longer there, the rock remains on the property as part of the stone wall running along Mission Canyon Road. The house, which was originally moved by Reverend Weld from his property onto his son’s land, has guarded this prominent corner at the entrance to Mission Canyon all these years. I could feel this history as I walked up toward the house. The two-story Craftsman is olive green with white trim and rust accents. Solid oak trees sit all around the property, their branches providing a beautiful backdrop from every angle. A sandstone wall hugs the front of the house and continues around to accent the backyard. I wasn’t surprised to learn that existing stones from the property were saved and reused throughout the recent relandscaping. Inside, a front entry foyer opens into the living and dining areas. A striking two-sided fireplace greets visi-
tors, warms both of these rooms, and highlights the stunning walnut floors. The living room, in contrast to many traditional Craftsman homes, is a delightfully bright room with tall windows showcasing the gorgeous grounds. The dining room offers huge bi-folding French doors that open onto a charming back patio. Even on the stormy day that I visited, it was obvious that the backyard — with seating areas on different levels and a stone waterfall as a focal point — would be a natural year-round gathering place. The entire living space is flexible and ready to be reversed or reconfigured as a new owner sees fit. Two bedrooms on the right side of the dining room share a Jack-and-Jill bathroom. Another bedroom is tucked off the kitchen and laundry room on the other side of the house, with its own bathroom and a separate entrance, providing options for guest or nanny quarters. The kitchen itself has Viking appliances, a farmhouse sink, custom alder cabinetry, and a separate walk-in pantry as an enviable bonus. A large countertop that’s open to the dining room is perfect for entertaining or bar-top dining space. As I walked toward the staircase to explore the second floor, I noticed the powder room near the foyer. Lovely Asian-inspired patterned wallpaper plus a unique antique vanity and handsome light fixture make this room a show-stopper. Upstairs, the master suite takes center stage, with a fireplace, a walk-in closet, and a gorgeous understated bathroom. Two sets of French doors open to a balcony
overlooking the front of the house. I’m told that on a clear day, this view extends all the way to the ocean. A large separate sitting room completes the second floor, with a wet bar, built-in bookcases, and another balcony. This balcony looks out over the side of the house to the horse corral and a wooded open space. A separate sandstone outbuilding sits on this part of the property, down a winding path past three beautiful old oak trees. It’s here that the history of this home feels the strongest. The little building sits in its idyllic setting, awaiting a new owner to decide whether it’s destined to be a workshop or a wine grotto, a playhouse or a magical garden shed. The next owner of this lovely home at the gateway to Mission Canyon will inherit the stories of its past and the ability to create the next chapter in its history.

SBIFF’s Pajama Party Raises Funds for Its Education Programs
O
n February 24 at the Riviera Theatre, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF) held a very amusing Red Carpet Pajama Party, which raised about $80,000 for its extensive education programs. The 200 or so guests, clad in their finest PJs, enjoyed a lighthearted mid-afternoon reception in front of the theater and in the lobby, complete with gourmet food and beverages and a king-size bed for fun photo ops. Then guests got to enjoy Oscar viewing on the big screen. SBIFF is well known for its world-class film festival. Less well-known but equally worthy of recognition are its extensive and amazing education programs for youth in Santa Barbara and beyond. Some of these programs, like the Film Studies Program, run in conjunction with the film festival. This three-day symposium for college students includes a private screening and discussion with a filmmaker (this year, Paul Schrader), panel discussions with top industry professionals (this year, the Directors’ Panel and the Women’s Panel), and access to SBIFF’s films, including Q&As with filmmakers. This year’s program, which benefited 30 SBCC students and 30 out-of-area students, was completely underwritten by Lynda Weinman, Bruce Heavin, and Netflix. The 10-10-10 (Ten Writers – Ten Directors – Ten Films) Competition offers 10 high school and 10 college students an incredible mentorship opportunity with industry professionals. Mentors included top talent like Prudence and Robert Sternin, who have written, produced, or developed more than a dozen prime-time series, actor Perry Lang, and multi-Emmy-nominated screenwriter Glenn Leopold. Other community members function as actors, producers, and judges, giving students a large network of support. After five months of work, the resulting films are shown at The Arlington Theatre on the final festival day, complete with an awards ceremony. Mike’s FieldTrip to the Movies, founded by Mike deGruy, brings 4,000 4th, 5th, and 6th grade Title 1 school students to The Arlington Theatre for a film and discussion with the director. The program seeks to use filmmaking to stimulate creativity, confidence, and
cultural awareness. SBIFF provides a study guide and, for some schools, an in-school filmmaker presentation. This year, some students saw Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse while others saw Ralph Breaks the Internet. A discussion with the directors followed each screening, and 700 students had an in-school filmmaker presentation. SBIFF plans to expand this program to include three screenings at other times of the year. In partnership with the United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County (UBGC), SBIFF runs a sixday overnight summer Film Camp at Camp Whittier, free of charge, where 30 lucky UBGC members ages 12-16 learn about film production and appreciation. For these low-income students, it’s an amazing opportunity to learn about the exciting world of film production. Under the Rosebud Program, 10 Santa Barbara County college students participate in SBIFF’s Cinema Society each fall. Students see more than 20 films and attend Q&As. They participate in small group filmanalysis discussions with SBIFF Executive Director Roger Durling and help develop study guides and Q&As. SBIFF also has outreach programs bringing film to underserved audiences. Applebox provides free familyoriented films and refreshments on weekend mornings during the festival. This year, about 6,000 people enjoyed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Ralph Breaks the Internet, and Incredibles 2. The program is targeted for expansion, with plans to eventually show one film per month. SBIFF’s Silver Screenings, in partnership with Easy Lift Transportation, provides free transportation, admission, and refreshments each month to a film at the Riviera Theatre for non-ambulatory seniors. About 700 seniors participate each year. This summer, SBIFF will be opening the Barbakow Family Center for Film Studies at 1330 State Street, which will be a classroom, screening room, community meeting space, and editing suite.

The Power Is in the White Space I n design school, artists are taught about the power of “white space” — the area between elements — to draw the viewer’s eye toward what is most important and to help create a feeling of clarity and simplicity. White space makes an impact. It allows the work to breathe. This is true in our lives as well. Consider your last hectic day: You jam-packed your calendar from 8 a.m. through 5 p.m., you didn’t leave SIMPLY 805 a single minute to by Sara Caputo regroup at your desk, to eat lunch, or to get back to anyone that has emailed or called you. You scrambled out of work to pick up the kids or to get to an appointment … and realized you still had a good three hours of actual work left to do. When you take a step back and consider your calendar on a consistent, weekly basis, you allow yourself to pinpoint days and times when you’ve squeezed things just a little too closely together, and this lets you make better scheduling decisions. Instead, adding some “white space” back on the calendar and in between activities gives you the chance to take a
breath and re-center yourself. It helps you focus, giving you more clarity when you’re actually in those meetings and working on those important projects you need to get done. While you can’t always control the amount of white space in between activities, a regular look at your schedule will give you some measure of control, restoring some much-needed balance to your day. Here are four simple steps to help you put more white space in your days: (1) Stop and assess your calendar as it’s currently configured. How much space do you leave yourself between meetings and other obligations in your day? If you’re rushing from one thing to the next with no breathing room, consider spending more time planning. Give yourself bigger breaks in between commitments, and you’ll notice a huge impact on your performance and your day. (2) Learn to say “no” to things — or at least “not right now.” When you say no to something, remember you’re saying yes to something else. White space doesn’t just happen. You have to schedule and insist on it. Which leads us to the next step.
(3) Leave time at the end of your day for planning and cleanup — just like you learned to do in kindergarten! This must be scheduled time. Consider it the most important appointment of your day and make it a priority. Use this time to recap the day, clean up your desk, empty that email box, and, most importantly, plan for the next day. This way, you get to leave work at work and focus on the things and people in your life during your off-hours. (4) Let go of the feeling that you have to get it all done right now! This mind-set is reinforced by a lot of office cultures, but it’s very counterproductive. We all want to appear
busy and important making calls, hurrying off to meetings, ticking off item after item on the to-do list. But in the end, you’re not leaving yourself enough white space — which leads to stress and burnout … and makes you much less productive. Prioritize the most important tasks of your day, early on if possible, and set realistic goals for your day. Remember: If everything is important, then nothing is important! The next time your mind starts buzzing and you realize that you haven’t had a second to stop and take a breath in your day, ask yourself, “What’s missing here?” As with design, the answer might just be more white space!

Where do you get new clients, and what sort of discussions do you have with them initially? A new client will come from
Most, but not all, clients already know that Santa Barbara is a more difficult environment to design and build in. That’s also part of the first meeting, to get them acquainted with the design and build process. Sometimes they’ve heard about it and are concerned or apprehensive. Other times, they know nothing. As far as Santa Barbara goes, building permits are pretty much nuts and bolts — you fol-
low the code, you get the permit. But the plan-review process, the following of different community plans, that’s a whole other deal. It’s thorny and strewn with little landmines. Lastly, what kind of characteristics do you see in the most successful design-build teams? Communication and interest. A
shared understanding that there’s value in early design-build discussions. I believe in the collaborative process. Not all contractors are interested in that, and it really takes a caring and interested client to make it happen.

It’s about 50-50: Half say they haven’t given a thought [to speaking with a contractor], and the other half say they’ve already met with one or have a few names in mind. For me, the way I like to work, it’s always better having a contractor as a sounding board in the earliest stages of design. I try to encourage that. That’s how I like to work.
