Dear Readers, In 2017, the Santa Barbara Independent partnered with The Fund for Santa Barbara and launched a year-end online giving campaign that highlights organizations in our community doing crucial social work and provides an easy-to-use online donation platform for our readers. Our third year of S.B. Gives! launches today, November 14, and we hope to continue to grow on the success of our first two years, which raised more than $400,000 for 44 nonprofits in 2017 and $390,000 for 55 nonprofits in 2018. The 53 area organizations chosen this year are only a fraction of the nonprofits in Santa Barbara but reflect the needs of our community. Their work focuses on areas ranging from community engagement to social justice and the environment to homelessness, LGBTQ wellbeing, and youth and education. This year, we are also highlighting four nonprofits that support our immigrant community. The goal of S.B. Gives! is to introduce you to organizations on the front lines that empower systemic change. In 2020, we will be faced with voter ballot choices that will affect us all. At this pivotal point in our nation’s history, it brings me great hope learning about these regional nonprofits that are working to ensure our community can continue to become more accessible and sustainable and to thrive regardless of the political climate. S.B. Gives! is our opportunity to think globally and give locally. If you feel inspired as you read through this guide and learn about organizations and their projects, you can give as little as $10 to the organizations at sbgives.org. S.B. Gives! is not possible without the efforts of The Fund for Santa Barbara, and we are deeply appreciative of their partnership. We also thank the Brittingham Family Foundation, the McCune Foundation, and the Santa Barbara Foundation for their support of this program and the 53 nonprofit organizations participating this year for their tireless work. Finally, we thank you for being an Independent reader. Now it’s your turn to visit sbgives.org and give!
Dear Santa Barbara Independent Reader, The Fund for Santa Barbara is honored once again to be partnering with the Santa Barbara Independent to help raise critical funds for some of our region’s most important community-based organizations. The success of the first two years of the program — over $750,000 raised for dozens of nonprofits — shows that Santa Barbara Gives! has tremendous potential, and we are grateful to the more than 1,500 donors for that success! It’s not often that a media outlet is willing to leverage their platform to help raise that level of support to address community challenges. We applaud the Santa Barbara Independent for stepping up again to help our community in this way. While Santa Barbara County is fortunate to be a region of tremendous prosperity and natural beauty, our region also faces many of the same problems that challenge our society as a whole: poverty, environmental degradation, homelessness, racial and ethnic prejudices, violence against women, homophobia, and many other social, economic, and environmental problems. In this guide, you will find over 50 social change and cultural projects selected by the FUND’s activist-led Grant-Making Committee, who are working to address some of those problems here, where we live and work. Most of these groups are working for change by focusing on the root causes of societal problems by providing long-term solutions while operating in a manner that advances democracy here at home, and being responsive to and directed by the people they serve. We encourage you to take a good look at this guide and consider supporting any number of the organizations featured. And then please share this guide with a friend, or better yet, visit sbgives.org and share it with your social media networks. With much gratitude,
—Brandi Rivera Publisher

WHAT WE DO:
To empower a community by educating adults, providing help in finding a pathway to legal residency, and sharing the hope of the gospel.
WHAT WE DO:
IMMIGRATION
CAUSE’s mission is to build grassroots power to invoke social, economic and environmental justice for the people of California’s Central Coast Region through policy research, leadership development, organizing, and advocacy.
SOCIAL CHANGE PROJECT: LEGAL REPRESENTATIVES IN IMMIGRATION COURT AND USCIS
SOCIAL CHANGE PROJECT: 805 IMMIGRANT RAPID RESPONSE
Under the Trump administration, immigration raids have been tearing our families apart. We are building a rapid response network for raids, deportations, and family separations that is connected to similar statewide efforts. We use a hotline for reporting raids and dispatching volunteers to respond to, verify, and witness the presence of ICE throughout our region. We warn our communities of immigration sweeps through a text-alert network of thousands of local residents and inform people of their rights. When local families are impacted by the detention of a loved one, we work to connect them with local support services and court representation. An organized community is a strong community. IMPORTA WHAT WE DO:
IMPORTA is committed to providing affordable, high quality legal immigration services to our local immigrant communities without charge. Our work contributes to enhanced trust, stronger immigrant families, and increased participation by immigrants in our county’s economic, civic and cultural life.
SOCIAL CHANGE PROJECT: HELPING LOW-INCOME DACA RECIPIENTS TO PAY THEIR $495 GOVERNMENT FEE
DACA—“Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals”—provides temporary protection to young children who were brought to the United States by their parents. It requires a $495 renewal fee every two years. Many of the young people who have received DACA work very hard, but still struggle to pay school tuition and contribute to family expenses. IMPORTA has provided more legal representation than any other legal provider in the County and all without any charge to the DACA recipients. However, we have no way to help DACA applicants who are facing financial hardship cover the $495 government fee. Every dollar contributed will go directly towards paying the $495 government fee of a deserving DACA recipient. Contribute what you can—every dollar helps!
According to the law, only attorneys and Department of Justice (DOJ) accredited representatives are able to represent immigrants to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for applications or in Immigration Court for removal proceedings if fully accredited. In Santa Barbara County there is a need for pro-bono or low cost representation for our immigrant neighbors to USCIS and in Immigration Court. Currently, we have three partially accredited representatives to assist individuals with immigration applications. With your help, Immigrant Hope SB will be able to apply for one of our partially accredited representatives to become fully accredited and by law will be able to represent people in Immigration court. The lack of legal representation has a profound impact on immigrants’ ability to receive a fair hearing and be able to seek relief from deportation. Additionally we are hiring and training an additional partial accredited representative to take over the full accredited representatives’ caseload and assist with our increasing immigration caseload. SBC IMMIGRANT LEGAL DEFENSE CENTER WHAT WE DO:
SOCIAL CHANGE PROJECT:
The Santa Barbara County Immigrant Legal Defense Center (ILDC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing immigrants with equal access to justice and due process by providing no-cost legal representation for those detained or in removal proceedings and through community education to help people understand and assert their basic civil rights.
SOCIAL CHANGE PROJECT:
PROVIDING LEGAL REPRESENTATION IN DEPORTATION PROCEEDINGS
The ILDC aims to hire an experienced immigration lawyer to represent locals who are in deportation proceedings and cannot afford an attorney. We have a waiting list of 71 people, including asylum seekers and unaccompanied minors, in need of this assistance. The attorney would also assist our volunteer attorneys. Santa Barbara County is home to 100,000 immigrants. Of them, more than 43,000 are undocumented, and nearly 48 percent of all children in the region have one or more foreign-born parent. Approximately 1,400 local residents face deportation and potential separation from their families, often including their U.S. citizen children. CHALLENGE GIFT:

IMMIGRATION
WHAT WE DO:
The mission of Pacific Pride Foundation (PPF) is to advance advocacy and education efforts to meet the ongoing and emerging needs of a diverse population in order to create a thriving and visible LGBTQ+ community and to prevent the transmission of HIV/AIDS. We serve Santa Barbara County and the Central Coast with a dynamic range of health, education, outreach, advocacy, and social services that support the needs of LGBTQ+ individuals of every race, gender, age, sexuality, religion, and socioeconomic status.
LGBTQ+ youth in Santa Barbara County often feel isolated in their daily lives while facing bullying and harassment. Self-harm and suicidal thoughts and attempts are not uncommon. Pacific Pride Foundation reaches out to LGBTQ+ youth to say: YOU ARE NOT ALONE! Our social change idea is to empower community youth with peer support, leadership development, and community involvement. Our Youth Connect Conference and PROUD prom offer safe environments and new tools for building self-esteem. The goal is to encourage and support youth so they can emerge from the shadows of isolation with a strong sense of self-worth and feel free to be who they want to be, without shame.

GENDER AFFIRMING CARE
PFLAG SANTA BARBARA WHAT WE DO:
We envision a world where diversity is celebrated and all people are respected, valued, and affirmed inclusive of their sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. PFLAG realizes its mission through support for families, allies, and people who are LGBTQ; education for ourselves and others about the unique issues and challenges facing people who are LGBTQ; and advocacy in our communities to change attitudes and create policies and laws that achieve full equality for people who are LGBTQ.
SOCIAL CHANGE PROJECT:
MAKING PFLAG SANTA BARBARA ACCESSIBLE TO LANTINX COMMUNITY
We are launching a project to expand our accessibility by providing Spanish-language translation and making our support meeting inclusive of the Latinx community. This program will offer much-needed support to Spanish-speaking LGBTQ individuals and their families. PFLAG works to ensure that people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer and their families are safe and secure, no matter where they live, work, study, pray, or play. We focus on generating family support, which is critical to the well-being of LGBTQ people. CHALLENGE GIFT:
As part of our commitment to providing high-quality sexual and reproductive health care, we launched Gender Affirming Care in June 2019. From responses to our LGBTQ+ Community Needs and Assets Assessment, conducted in partnership with Fielding Graduate University, we understand the impact of gender-affirming care on those who seek access to safe, inclusive, trusted health services. Gender Affirming Care includes collaborating with community partners, extensive training for staff, hiring a gender-affirming care navigator, expanding options on all patient and registration intake forms, and identifying referral options. Planned Parenthood is proud to advance gender-affirming care throughout our affiliate service area so that every patient will feel seen, heard, respected, and cared for with dignity and professionalism.

The Santa Barbara Transgender Network educates individuals and organizations on best practices for transgender and gender-expansive clients, patients, students, congregants, and families and creates and develops spaces, actions, and policies that advance the welfare of transgender and diverse gender nonconforming individuals, their families, and allies in California’s Central Coast communities.
SOCIAL CHANGE PROJECT:
IMPROVING THE DAILY LIVES OF TRANSGENDER AND GENDER NONCONFORMING PEOPLE IN OUR COUNTY
SBTAN has succeeded in providing access and improving policies in schools for transgender and gender-expansive youth, but health care remains our biggest hurdle. We have hosted three annual medical symposiums, educating medical professionals throughout the region on best practices. To date, we have not seen significant change. Transgender and gender nonconforming people still do not have many clinicians they feel comfortable seeing in our community; many either go without proper care or travel to Los Angeles for their medical needs. We need help in doing more outreach to medical professionals to ensure that the transgender community feels safe at local medical facilities. CHALLENGE GIFT:

FOOD FROM THE HEART
HEALTH & WELLNESS
WHAT WE DO:
In every community, there are individuals who are homebound and managing illness or recovering from major surgery and do not have a primary caregiver nor the resources to hire someone. Part of the healing process is being cared for nutritionally. Food From The Heart recognizes that need by preparing nutritious, healing meals delivered by caring volunteers to those in crisis due to illness or injury or who are under the care of hospice, visiting nurses, or other medical professionals. Food From The Heart does not charge for this service.
SOCIAL CHANGE PROJECT: PROVIDING FOOD TO LOWINCOME INDIVIDUALS LIVING ALONE AND BATTLING ILLNESS OR RECOVERING FROM SURGERY
Food From The Heart provides prepared food each week to 160 individuals in our community who live alone, are managing illness or recovering from surgery, and do not have the financial resources to hire a caregiver. We address food insecurity issues by ensuring our clients have nutritious food to eat while they are managing their illness or recovering from surgery. We serve adults of all ages. WHAT WE DO:
The Santa Barbara Alliance for Community Transformation (S.B. ACT) exists to equip the community to lovingly engage the marginalized while actively working for the betterment of their physical, emotional, and mental needs.
SANCTUARY CENTERS WHAT WE DO:
Sanctuary Centers was established with the purpose of helping individuals with mental illness regain independence in their lives. Many things have changed since that time; medications have improved, therapies have changed, the recognition of the intersection that so often exists between mental illness and substance abuse has risen dramatically, and our jails have become the largest housing provider for the mentally ill. What has not changed is the stigma that these individuals face when seeking housing and employment.
SOCIAL CHANGE PROJECT: THE GET WELL INITIATIVE
Sanctuary Centers has identified three current, critical needs of adults living with mental health and substance use disorders: a dramatic shortage of affordable, supportive housing; significant barriers to preventative health care; and limited specialized counseling and support services. To address these needs, Sanctuary Centers launched a $15-million dollar initiative to build a five-story facility located in the heart of Santa Barbara, adjacent to Sanctuary’s existing Outpatient Mental Health and Housing campus. The Get Well Initiative will help countless more individuals with mental illness have that chance. Please support our efforts to help make this a reality! CHALLENGE GIFT:

In 2017, a staggering 205 million pounds of agricultural pesticides were used in California, roughly 20 percent of the national total — with 5.4 million pounds used in Santa Barbara alone. Many of these pesticides are hazardous to humans and the environment. Our goal is to build the pesticide reform movement in Santa Barbara County. We will build local leadership, identify local campaign priorities, cultivate relationships with local decision makers, maintain a sustained media and social media presence, and connect local efforts to statewide work in order to promote the transition to safe, sustainable farming in Santa Barbara County.

HOMELESSNESS
ENVIRONMENT
Partners in Housing helps people who are experiencing homelessness to secure and retain permanent housing through our network of private landlords.
FINDING HOMES FOR THE HOMELESS
Our social change idea is to use the business sector to solve a social sector issue. Instead of relying on social service practices alone to address homelessness, PHS draws on landlords and the private housing market to fill in the substantial gaps not covered by the social service model. Because we work with clients who are farther along in their ability to maintain permanent housing, we take some of the pressure off the public housing system by freeing up units that can then be used for the most disadvantaged and hard to house. AHA! inspires communities to feel safe, seen, celebrated, and emotionally connected. We equip teenagers and adults with socialemotional intelligence to transform schools and communities into welcoming, nourishing spaces where all work together toward the highest good.
SOCIAL CHANGE PROJECT:
PARENT GROUPS FOR INTEGRATIVE SOCIALEMOTIONAL HEALTH AND INTERGENERATIONAL SUPPORT
In AHA!’s 20 years, our approach to socialemotional learning (SEL) has been singularly recognized for improving campus climate and reducing student conflict. In our experience, reaching adults alongside youth is the most effective path to long-term change. Thus, in addition to training teachers, we wish to expand our parent group offerings. Today’s teens face unprecedented anxiety, and parents are experiencing parallel tension. AHA! Parent Groups will offer tools to recognize red flags in youth; to intervene in cyberbullying/digital addiction; to communicate; and especially to model positive coping strategies for their children. When adults and teens work together on social-emotional intelligence at school and at home, the possibilities are boundless. CHALLENGE GIFT:

Freedom 4 Youth (F4Y) has established a centrally located Center where youth that are justice system impacted work alongside volunteer mentors from UCSB, SBCC, and Westmont. The objective is to support and empower Santa Barbara County youth with the resources and skills needed to either not enter the justice system (diversion) or to help leave the system once they are involved (reentry). F4Y is requesting community support to create two self-sustaining STEM after school classes where students will study Robotics along with 3D Game Design. Students will learn robotics engineering and programming along with basic artificial intelligence. F4Y needs community support to continue providing a safe space for youth throughout the county to support one another through reciprocal mentorship in order to raise rates of academic achievement, gainful employment, and self-efficacy while reducing recidivism, incarceration, and violence in the community. WHAT WE DO:
WHAT WE DO:
The mission of Children and Family Resource Services is to provide high-quality, familyfocused, strength-based, culturally appropriate educational and health services to build resilient communities throughout Santa Barbara County. The S.B. County Network of Promotores program aims to empower families and individuals with respect, dignity, and compassion by enhancing the quality of all aspects of their lives through education and promoting healthy behaviors.
The Goleta Education Foundation (GEF) engages the community to invest in and enhance an excellent educational experience for all students attending schools in the Goleta Union School District (GUSD).
SOCIAL CHANGE PROJECT: WHOLE-CHILD EDUCATION THROUGH SCHOOL GARDENS
As part of its commitment to enhancing an outstanding, whole-child educational experience for Goleta Valley’s young scholars, the Goleta Education Foundation (GEF) is raising funds to provide materials and supplies to improve, enlarge, and, in some instances, relocate the school gardens at all nine Goleta Union School District sites. Educating the whole child — ensuring every student is healthy, engaged, supported, and challenged in a safe environment — is increasingly important to balance the effects of today’s fastpaced, technology-driven world. In outdoor learning environments, students’ abilities to focus, cooperate, socialize, and gain self-confidence soar as they learn to integrate math, science, art, health, and social studies with the natural world. Together, with your donation, we can build school gardens where knowledge grows, learning thrives, and kids achieve. CHALLENGE GIFT:

Our services are in English and Spanish, often at no or nominal cost to reduce financial barriers.
SUPPORTING THE SOCIALEMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF YOUNG CHILDREN

SBHS COMPUTER SCIENCE ACADEMY FOUNDATION WHAT WE DO:
The CSA’s mission is to expose as many SBHS students as possible to computer science and to demonstrate its relevance to their academic and career interests. Through innovative courses, opportunities outside the classroom, and industry partnerships, academy students will expand their knowledge and experience in computer science and gain preparation to pursue a career in this dynamic field.
SOCIAL CHANGE PROJECT: CODING FOR CHANGE
Our social change idea is to give all students at SBHS the opportunity to be exposed to computer science and acquire the computer science skills necessary to enter the workforce. This includes those aiming at jobs right out of high school or a two-year college as well as those aiming at a four-year college and/or graduate school. As computer-related professions grow rapidly, the field remains overwhelmingly white and male. We are helping to change this story through student-led outreach to young people who might not receive exposure to the rewarding opportunities accessible through a computer science education. We are proud that the CSA’s demographics approach the diversity of our school at large. This is how we build a more equitable future.
The Santa Barbara Police Activities League (PAL) strives to build positive mentoring relationships among teens, the police department, and members of the community through educational, athletic, cultural, and leadership development programs. PAL programs help steer low-income and disadvantaged teens toward successful academic and career goals while fostering positive relationships between the youth and law enforcement personnel. PAL focuses on three primary areas: Teen Center Enrichment, Teen Leadership, and Family/Community Outreach.
SOCIAL CHANGE PROJECT: POSITIVE MENTORING WITH POLICE EXPLORER POST
Fractured relationships between law enforcement and minority populations continue to abound, and healing that distrust is a valiant effort. The Explorer Post program offers positive interaction with law enforcement and a glimpse into the daily lives of law enforcement personnel. The program provides weekly mentoring, training, and education on the purposes, mission, and objectives of law enforcement and public safety. PAL hopes to be an instrument in reversing the negative view of law and authority and an avenue for creating a stronger, united community.

WHAT WE DO:
The mission of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee of Santa Barbara is to foster positive relationships among the many diverse groups in the Santa Barbara community and the surrounding areas; to sponsor programs and events that exemplify the teachings of Dr. King; and to observe and celebrate the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.
SOCIAL CHANGE PROJECT: MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. S.B. WEEKEND OF EVENTS
LEGAL AID FOUNDATION WHAT WE DO:
Legal Aid Foundation of Santa Barbara County is a nonprofit law firm that provides free legal assistance to Santa Barbara County residents. Our mission is to provide high-quality civil legal services to lowincome and other vulnerable residents in order to ensure equal access to justice. We change lives through direct representation, legal advice and information, and community education.
Our Social Change work is the presentation of programs that inspire and engage the community pursuing the ideals of Dr. King, who believed the elimination of racial discrimination to be a moral imperative. The committee works throughout the year to create programs that include arts and cultural events that showcase the richness of our community and to engage our diverse audiences in activities that enhance cross-cultural understanding and encourage peaceful coexistence. CHALLENGE GIFT:

SOCIAL CHANGE PROJECT: EMPOWERING SURVIVORS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Legal Aid Foundation of Santa Barbara County seeks support for our Family Violence Prevention Project. We provide free legal advocacy for survivors of intimate partner violence, including children, to get protection from abusers. Once individuals and families are protected, we provide a holistic range of legal services to ensure that survivors can permanently live free from abuse and rebuild their lives.

NAACP WHAT WE DO:
The National Association For The Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is the nation’s largest, oldest civil rights grassroots organization. Founded by some 53 white abolitionists and seven African Americans in response to the horrific lynching taking place across the nation, our mission is to ensure the social, political, educational, and economic equality of rights by removing barriers such as racial hatred in order to eliminate racebased discrimination and ensure the health and well-being of all persons. Our vision is to ensure a society in which all individuals have equal rights without discrimination.
SOCIAL CHANGE PROJECT:
RENOUNCE REJECT RACISM HATRED AND BIGOTRY PROJECT (RRRHBP)
Through RRRHBP, where we consider silence to be acceptance, each month we address issues relevant to racism, hatred, bigotry, inequality, equity, and discrimination of all kinds with workshops and speakers; unity rallies, marches, and circles; collaborations with like-minded organizations; tabling at various events such as Pride and Labor Day; hosting events such as a Martin Luther King Jr. celebration and Black history celebration; and holding monthly meetings with open discussion on topics such as diversity and tolerance, implicit bias, privilege, inclusivity, and ethnic and gender studies.

SOCIAL CHANGE PROJECT:
THE ONE COMMUNITY PROJECT
SELF-ADVOCACY FOR PEOPLE WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES
PathPoint supports people with developmental disabilities in learning about their personal rights and advocating for themselves. We partner with self-advocacy groups such as People First to amplify their voices in local policy decision-making processes. This year PathPoint completed a successful campaign to request more funding for developmental disability services from the state, with self-advocates calling and writing letters to their local legislators and visiting elected officials. Help us strengthen the self-advocacy skills of people with developmental disabilities by sending them to the California Disability Services Association’s Legislative Affairs Conference in Sacramento this year!

PEOPLES’ SELF-HELP HOUSING CORPORATION WHAT WE DO:
The One Community Project will host monthly public art projects, speaker forums and workshops, topical documentary films, and other interactive activities that build community and identify and address local issues of social and environmental justice, racism, women’s rights, health care, and civic engagement.
We build affordable homes with site-based services that offer opportunities to change lives and strengthen communities on the central coast of California.
SOCIAL CHANGE PROJECT: ISLA VISTA RESIDENT LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
Creating great neighborhoods needs engaged residents who are unafraid to use their voices. Rather than passively accepting decisions made by others, residents of Peoples’ Self-Help Housing’s Isla Vista Apartments deserve to have a say in decisions that affect them. They will build on two years of leadership development as they tackle neighborhood safety, create beautiful shared spaces, and build their capacity to collaborate with city and county representatives. This project empowers low-income people to participate in decisions around building a safe, inclusive community. To date, residents have improved the safety of Children’s Park, worked with the UCSB Community Garden Network, and received training through the county Sheriff ’s Office.
