s I walked toward my car after touring the Jorgensen Ranch House last week, the owner came back outside, and asked, “By the way, did you want to see the studio? I’m sorry I forgot to ask you earlier.” I felt as if perhaps I had already overstayed my welcome. The house had so many interesting details, and I had the unexpected pleasure of having both of the owners there to show me around. We had gotten to chatting on many different subjects, and I asked a million and one questions about everything from the bathroom sinks to the proposed office wall paint colors to the reasons behind the decisions they made when they were remodeling. However, since he asked about the studio, of course I said yes. The studio is a converted garage that’s in a separate building. As it turned out, the studio featured one of the best sneak peeks of the day. In fact, the entire visit to the Jorgensen Ranch House was a sneak peek. It is one of seven properties that can be visited on October 1 during the eighth annual ArchitecTours, which is open to the public and provides a behind-the-scenes look at various residential and commercial properties. Some, such as Jorgensen Ranch House, are historically significant, while others are more contemporary. The tour is presented by the Santa Barbara chapter of the American Institute of Architects with the goal of making architecture more accessible to the public. Architects from each of the projects will be on hand to answer questions and discuss the challenges and solutions involved in designing the sites on the tour. With this in mind, I didn’t feel guilty asking my zillion questions. The house itself is a one-story adobe brick residence, designed in the 1950s by architect John Ward Pitman before he even received his license. It was designated as a “Structure of Merit” by the City of Santa Barbara in 2009 and purchased by its current owners in 2011. The house was remodeled extensively, but as you walk through it today, it’s not apparent at first glance which parts of the house are original and which are new. The front door opens onto the expansive great room, with the living room to the right, dining area straight ahead, and a gorgeous open kitchen to the left. The main focus, however, is straight through the

house. The wall beyond the dining room is an architectural marvel, with a 120-degree angled door opening onto the back patio and the view beyond. This NanaWall door folds onto itself, letting more of the outside in and allowing the focus to be on the view rather than the door. This view includes beautiful native landscaping and terraced gardens that blend into the surroundings. Back inside, the beautiful dining room set stopped me in my tracks. Designed by woodworker John Spivey, the naturally gleaming table and chairs are works of art. I appreciated them even more after sitting in one of the chairs; their function is just as enviable as their form. Spivey’s influence is seen throughout the house, including thick wood bathroom sink surrounds and shelving. We wandered through the kitchen and family room and to the downstairs office. The master suite, with its view from the bathtub onto the back patio and the canyon beyond, is undoubtedly my favorite part of the house. Although this portion of the house is new, with more than 1,100 square feet added in the remodel, it blends seamlessly with the style and lines of the original house. I was treated to first-hand details of the extensive remodeling experience. The original kitchen door was recycled for use in the new family room, and other touches

melding the old and new are evident. Deep tile windowsills in many of the rooms show off the thick adobe walls and echo the beautiful Saltillo tile flooring throughout the home. Natural materials abound, including the wood-beamed ceilings. Admiring the ceilings leads to stories of the sandblasting that went into uncovering the natural wood beneath the dark finish that had been added by a previous owner. There appeared to be some distinct differences of opinion between the two owners about how much was too much when it came to revealing the natural beauty of the house. This was most apparent in our visit to the studio — the aforementioned portion of our tour that almost didn’t happen. Not only had the natural wood been uncovered from the ceiling beams, but part of one wall was also boldly stripped to reveal the original adobe bricks inside. Being able to see the straw mixed in with the mud showcases their beautiful simplicity and construction. However, showing the mud in the walls for all the world to see was a little too rustic for the rest of the house, so this show-and-tell is confined to the studio. I departed the Jorgensen Ranch House feeling as if I had gotten a glimpse into not only the history of the structure itself but also the lives of its owners. On October 1, the architect of the remodel, Paul Poirier of Paul Poirier + Associates Architects, and the landscape architect, Margie Grace of Grace Design Associates, will both be on hand, as will the principals of the six other projects being highlighted.

cal teams to restore sight, typically through cataract removal, to underserved populations worldwide. There are an estimated 39 million blind people in the world, 48 percent of whom are blind because of cataracts. SEE’s volunteer eye surgeons pay their own travel expenses, most supplies are donated, and SEE keeps a lean staff. As a result, for every $100 SEE receives in donations, it can perform a sight-restoring surgery. After their full day of training, the 11 surgeons, one nurse, and four volunteer instructors joined a group of SEE board-

members, staff, and donors for cocktails and dinner on Brown’s sprawling patio. Two of the instructors, Dr. Janak Shah and his wife, Dr. Preeti Shah, traveled 30 hours from their native India to teach the course. Janak Shah has gone on 144 SEE Expeditions and performed close to 20,000 sightrestoring surgeries in 14 countries over 20 years. He related that when the bandages are removed after the surgery and the patient can see,“the blessings they give you no money in the world can buy—it is bliss.” Guests were treated to heartwarming stories from the field by Shah and the other incredibly dedicated instructors. The all-day training held at UC Santa Barbara taught how to perform manual small-incision cataract surgery—a quick, safe, highly regarded method that doesn’t

Last year, SEE conducted 182 clinics in 50 countries, drawing on its roster of 600 volunteer medical professionals. It performed 15,057 sight-restoring surgeries and conducted 36,544 vision screenings. SEE also operates here in Santa Barbara, providing free eye exams, medicine, and surgeries to the uninsured. ‘Sticks on fire’ plant (Euphorbia tirucalli)

Sticks on Fire, Not So Dire

A

Santa Barbara Independent reader wrote in to suggest a possible story based on an incident she had while working in her garden. It seems that her husband was in the yard, trimming the branches on their ‘sticks on fire’ plant (Euphorbia tirucalli). Apparently, she became very ill and was in substantial pain for a week after cutting up the branches and disposing of them in the green bin. Since her close call with this plant, the reader has noticed how prevalent this showy, succulent, yet potentially dangerous plant is in the landscapes and gardens around town. Well, this scenario does not surprise me since one of the characteristics of the plants in the Euphorbia genus is that many of them have an often poisonous, white, latex-like sap. Depending on the type of Euphorbia — whether it be a poinsettia, crown of thorns, African milk tree, or the previously mentioned sticks on fire, the plants can vary in toxicity. How toxic the plant is also depends on whether you eat it, get the sap on your skin, or, worse yet, get the sticky white stuff in your eyes. In part of the description for this plant on the San Marcos Growers website, President and General Manager Randy Baldwin writes, “Be very careful when handling this plant as the stems break easily and the milky sap can burn the skin or cause welts if one is sensitive to it, and certainly is not something to get into the eyes. When working with this plant, use protective goggles, and if you do get it in the eyes seek medical attention promptly. For this reason, this plant should also not be planted near paths or locations where a casual visitor to the garden might accidentally come in contact with it.” Baldwin unofficially mentioned that there is a folk remedy to use as an antidote in the event that a person gets the sap of sticks on fire in their eyes. He suggested I call retired UCSB horticulturist John Bleck to find out more about this. Bleck, who is absolutely the last word on everything plants and an old swimming buddy of mine, suggested that if you’re using sticks on fire in your landscape, you may also want to consider growing Aeonium sedifolium and Aeonium lindleyi since the sap from both of these succulents acts as an antidote to the worrisome Euphorbia. He also added that although this striking and colorful plant makes a nice contrast in the garden — almost as if something were in bloom — it is best not planted in high-traffic areas where people and pets may come in contact with it. Okay, this is my take on all of this. I would hope that folks don’t get unduly alarmed and run willy-nilly out to their gardens and start yanking their sticks on fire plants out of the ground. If they do this, they may as well dig out their azaleas, rhododendrons, hydrangeas, angel’s trumpet (Brugmansia), oleanders, foxglove, and larkspur, too. And while they’re at it, they can go in the house and dispose of their devil’s ivy (Pothos), mother-in-law’s tongue (Sansevieria), peace lily (Spathiphyllum), and dumb cane (Dieffenbachia). Oh, and don’t forgot to confiscate your grandmother’s anemic and dusty philodendron because, yes, amigos, all of these plants are also toxic to some degree. My point is this: You wouldn’t landscape your daycare center playground with saguaro or prickly pear cactus, right? Well, sticks on fire is a plant that can add beauty and interest to your garden. If you are drawn to this plant and want to use it in your landscape as well as other potentially toxic or threatening plants, google them, educate yourself, be aware of the risks, and use them n appropriately and with caution.

Batteries for off-grid Homes

P

eople keep asking about Tesla’s Powerwall, its new lithium-ion battery for homes. Now that the price of photovoltaic modules has dropped to $1 per watt or less, the missing piece for going off-grid, or even just for having a reliable backup power system, is an affordable battery. This is what the Powerwall is trumpeted to provide. It is a great product, except for three problems: It is undersized, overpriced, and unavailable. The typical American home uses 31 kWh (kilowatt hours) per day. To provide backup power for three days, usually considered the minimum (the sun doesn’t shine every day), would necessitate at least 14 Powerwalls, each rated at 7 kWh. This assumes that each Powerwall can be fully discharged without damaging the battery — still a question at this point. The cost would be about $49,000—each Powerwall costs $3,500 — not counting installation. Because of this high price, it would be wise for any homeowner to buy new energyefficient appliances and light bulbs before considering the purchase of a huge battery array. After reducing the electrical load as much as possible, lead-acid batteries are by Dennis Allen still a better option, costing less than half that of a lithium-ion battery array of the same capacity. Lead-acid battery technology is mature and well understood. Cost, however, is not the only consideration: Lead-acid batteries require frequent maintenance (mainly adding distilled water to the cells and cleaning the terminals); they can be easily ruined, either by undercharging or overcharging; and at best, they will last eight years but, in most cases, get damaged from improper care or usage and need replacing in five years or sooner. Not enough is known about the Powerwall to know what its issues will be. Compared to the 30-50 year life of a solar-electric array, a battery bank—whether lithium ion or lead acid—will need to be replaced multiple times. Furthermore, the fabrication and disposal of all those batteries have negative impacts on the environment. Considerable research and capital are focusing on storage systems for renewable energy, both distributed and large-scale. This focus makes it likely that prices will drop for existing types of batteries and that entirely new technologies will be developed. As these breakthroughs are realized, the initial employment by homeowners will probably be not to go off-grid but rather to load-shift— load-shift that is, reduce the use of grid electricity during peak hours, especially in areas that offer time-of-use billing. Homeowners will be able to make a little money by charging their batteries at night, when grid power is cheap, and selling electricity back to the utility during peak hours. (Utilities also benefit from this strategy by being able to get along with less generating capacity.) Homeowners with electric vehicles may be able to use their car batteries for the same purpose.
