Rancho Dos Vistas Is Stunning in Any Weather
L
et me be perfectly clear: I am not complaining about this weekend’s rain. We need the rain. We want the rain. I’m super-happy that we finally got a taste of the sweet wet stuff falling from the sky. However, I did not miss the irony this past Sunday when I took the drive up to the top of Refugio Road to view Rancho Dos Vistas—and there was absolutely no view. Remember Sunday? It was pouring. I could barely see four feet in front of my face, let alone enjoy the panoramic view. From its name alone, one would expect a worthy view from Rancho Dos Vistas. To add to my anticipation, I had previewed the property’s marketing materials. They were full of gorgeous photos of the views and promised “some of the best views that Santa Barbara has to offer of both the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez Valley.” So you’ll forgive me if I was the tiniest bit disappointed that the rain completely prevented me from seeing the views for which the ranch was named. There were multiple consolation prizes, however. On the drive up to the house, I saw two deer scamper across the road and climb up a steep hill. I also experienced the rare treat of watching and listening to the falling rain while I was cozily ensconced inside the beautiful ranch house. There was plenty to enjoy on this stormy Sunday visit. Rancho Dos Vistas, which literally means two views, is composed of 1,440 acres full of history and scenic splendor. The land includes a private pond and more than 40 miles of roads and trails with caves and rock formations. While most of these features were off-limits to me on Sunday because of the weather, the boulders and oak trees that I was able to see were stunning, rivaling any scenery that I’ve seen in any part of Santa Barbara. One of Rancho Dos Vistas’ most notable details is its location. The ranch is adjacent to former president Ronald Reagan’s Rancho del Cielo, known as the “Western White House.” The two ranches sit behind one gated entrance and share a private road dubbed Pennsylvania Avenue. Signs of the Secret Service activity from Reagan’s term of residence— such as additional fencing and signage—are still

in evidence as one drives that road today. Since the weather forced me to limit my explorations to the house, I got a good look at every room. The main house consists of three distinct levels that flow together well, giving an overall impression of spaciousness yet still providing separate, defined areas. The front door opens into a dining room and living room combined into one great room that unabashedly focuses on the ocean view beyond the house. The far wall is all windows and glass doors, bringing the outside in and inviting visitors to step out onto the flagstone porch beyond. Around a corner is another living room opening onto a side porch, sharing the same amazing view but in a cozier space. Back at the front door, up a few steps to the right, is the kitchen. It is an understated room, with a mix of natural materials blended beautifully into a functional yet minimalist space. A rustic white-tiled backsplash combines with subtle blue-patterned tiles above the stove for the only real
decorative touches in an otherwise neutral palette. The kitchen has its own views, both out the front and back of the house, plus skylights for even more light. There is a big island in the center of the large room, as well as a breakfast nook in one corner. A separate laundry room behind the kitchen provides further convenience and smart use of the space. Upstairs is the master suite, where the huge bathroom features a rainfall shower and double walk-in closets. The whole house feels like a hideaway, but the master bedroom is the pièce de résistance. With big windows facing three different directions, it’s easy to imagine waking up in that room, to those views, and never wanting to leave this haven. The entire house has beautiful hardwood floors, beamed wooden ceilings, and myriad touches throughout combining natural materials and state-ofthe-art convenience. One example is almost invisible retractable screens on every window, providing unobstructed visibility with the option of screens at your fingertips if you want to open any of the windows at any time. Almost connected to the house, and functioning as an additional wing, is a separate one-bedroom, one-bath guesthouse. Built with the same substantial feel and understated yet impeccable style as the main house, it is one long wing with a living room, a bathroom in the middle, and a bedroom on the end. It doesn’t have a kitchen, but a coffeemaker sitting out on top of a console in the bedroom made me feel like I could easily live in the guesthouse. Food? Who needs food? As I drove back down the hill, I felt awash in the awe of nature and enveloped in the Zen bubble of supreme calm and privacy that Rancho Dos Vistas exudes. Nothing about the house screams for attention. Rather, it sits regally and comfortably, content to take a backseat to the natural beauty of its surroundings. Even without experiencing its namesake views, I had fallen in love with the house and the setting of Rancho Dos Vistas.

Ensemble Theatre Company’s Ghost Light Night
O
n Friday, October 28, Ensemble Theatre Company (ETC) threw a “spirited benefit bash”—a fundraiser unlike any other in this town. Thanks to generous sponsorships, they refrained from speeches, auctions, paddle raises,, etc., and guests had a blissfully grand time. The evening began at ETC’s home, the New Vic, for a lovely courtyard reception and then an entertaining concert presentation of an X-Files episode with the show’s creator, Chris Carter. The party continued in “The Lair” at the Fess Parker DoubleTree hotel, where more than 200 guests were greeted by haunting characters before entering an enormous tent, which was elegantly furnished with a mix of comfy lounge chairs and formal dining furniture. A red theme permeated the space, with tablecloths, flower arrangements, and accent lighting augmenting the crystal chandeliers. The talented Replicas Music played party tunes throughout the evening, while guests mingled, dined on gourmet fare from multiple food stations, had their faces painted, and danced. This evening, ETC showed that not only does it consistently put on world-class performances, but it can also throw a world-class party.
ETC, Santa Barbara’s only professional theater company, has much to celebrate this year. In 2013, ETC completed a $12.6 million restoration of the New Vic, which transformed it into a magnificent venue, and this year ETC acquired full ownership of the theater. Thanks to funding from the Léni Fé Bland Performing Arts Education Fund and Sara Miller McCune, this year ETC introduced a program in which practitioners from Globe Education—part of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London—provided in-school programming for students who attended matinee performances of Macbeth. The practitioners also lead programs for teachers, groups of children with their families, and adult groups. ETC has been offering $10 student matinees for years, and the matinees typically include a post-performance talk-back. ETC also offers student group pricing and $20 tickets to those younger than 30. ETC presents both new plays and new interpretations of classic works. It also makes the facility available to other performing arts organizations. Upcoming plays are Neil Simon’s Chapter Two, George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, Tennessee Williams’s Baby Doll, and Allan Knee’s Syncopation.
Haunting characters welcome guests.
Guests enjoy The Lair.

C
and pedestrians can actually help keep traffic moving. We looked at tax data in New York City and found that retailers thrived where we built plazas, bike and bus lanes. Data provided a bigger context for understanding how our streets work and for prioritizing our efforts. If you think your city will somehow build its way out of congestion and into economic prosperity with more roads, I’ve got a bridge to sell you.
ity planners are faced with a perplexing future. Congestion, population, and pollution continue to squeeze our commuters, consumers, and residents. Janette SadikKhan has responded with a dramatic idea: Build fewer roads. Instead, she asks us to view our streets as dynamic and safe public space. Her innovative programs focus on simple redesigns and inexpensive reallocation of space, and she invites readers to reimagine the role streets play in our lives in her data-driven book Streetfight: Handbook for an Urban Revolution.
You say that using the perspective of moving people, instead of just moving cars, when designing streetscapes improves the quality of life of city residents. Can you explain this? Wide streets don’t make cities great. It’s the people and places that make a city worth living in, working in, and visiting. So it’s not the cars that you want; it’s the people in them. Investments in streets that make it easier for people to get around without a car are investments in a city’s economic vibrancy. People argue about bike lanes, but their impact is felt well beyond the lane, improving the safety and function of the entire street.
You emerged as the clear winner of the brutal “streetfight” in New York City. Has that affected the way that smaller towns like Santa Barbara are looking at their streets? I took a lot of the heat along the way, but New Yorkers were the biggest winners of the streetstreet fight. A lot of cities don’t have grand plazas or town squares, so streets are our de facto civic, cultural, and community spaces.Yet streets in cities big and small have been designed for cars for the last century, and we’ve forgotten that they could be any different. This is an incredible missed opportunity. Making streets work better for transit and for people who walk and bike is controversial at times. But we’ve seen in many cities that once you scratch the surface, that there’s a real need to update our infrastructure and that people are really hungry for new ways to get around. Given the choice, people will choose better streets. The biggest lesles son for cities large and small is that if we can transform streets in New York City, you can transform them anywhere.
How do you suggest cities like Santa Barbara foster more bicycling routes without eliminating the already limited amount of street parking available? When you
How has your careful attention to data helped drive your street designs? The fight over city streets tends to get stuck on misconceptions about how they function. People assume that building more highways or widening streets will somehow solve congestion, or that traf traffic hot spots can be erased simply with new signs and signals. If that were the case, then Los Angeles, Houston, and Atlanta would be moving at highway speed after 60 years of highway building. Meanwhile, a lot of people fear that bike lanes, bus lanes, and increased pedestrian space will bring car traffic to a standstill and crush small businesses. There’s a growing trove of data that shows that the opposite is true: More roads lead to more traffic congestion, and creating space for buses, bikes,
suggest taking away a parking space, some people react as if you’re taking away their firstborn child. But streets aren’t a zero-sum game, and there’s a lot more flexibility to our lanes than meets the eye. A lot of our greatest street designs retained parking, either with “floating” parking lanes that protected a curbside bike path, by reducing lane widths instead of removing entire lanes, or by taking a new look at parking regulations to accommodate deliveries and customers on side streets. Every city has its own opportunities, and designs can be tailored to each city’s needs. Global research also finds that business owners tend to overestimate their revenue from customers who drive while undervaluing how many of their customers walk, bike, and take transit. If you think a business is 100 percent dependent on every customer arriving by car, there may be more to the story, but it’s a problem that can be fixed by providing more transportation choices, not more car lanes. Santa Barbara is a particularly scenic city with great year-round weather. Some would say that we are an optimal city to implement some of your transportation policies. What kinds of benefits do your streetscape designs offer us? Good weather conditions are an important plus, but we found that a safe, intercon interconnected network of bike infrastructure is the primary determinant of whether people want to ride. We have brutal winters and summers in New York City, and still we see large numbers of people riding because the streets are safer and more accessible to people on bikes bikes—including to women and families families—young and old. I think there’s also a misconception that riding a bike is a recreational activity. Biking, walking, and quality transit aren’t just fun and games, and they’re not politi political statements or lifestyle choices. They’re essential pieces of a 21st-century transporta transportation network, and cities aren’t going to sur survive this century unless they diversify their streets. In Santa Barbara, as elsewhere, when neighborhoods “get better,” the longtime residents—from renters and homeowners to residents artists and businesses businesses— often get displaced. How do you design cities to accommodate the people and workers who have always lived there? Everybody deserves better streets. They’re not out-of-place in any neighborhood or in conflict with traditional neighborhood patterns. What we’ve seen in city after city is that street designs that support more transporta transportation options help make neighborhoods thrive, whether they’re in existing or emerging com communities. And we see that support and public opinion eventually catches up with the experience as fears over changing the street give way to appre appreciation for a new road order.
