Community Dividends Awards Luncheon

n the Monday before Thanksgiving, Montecito Bank & Trust (MB&T) hosted its Community Dividends Awards Luncheon, where it awarded $1 million to 203 nonprofits in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. The event started with a reception in the warm sunshine at the water’s edge on La Pacifica Ballroom’s terrace at Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore’s Coral Casino. The warmth, however, went beyond the weather. There was a genuine, palpable sense of a caring community where bank employees casually mingled with nonprofit leaders. Over the past 14 years, MB&T has given away $14 million in Community Dividends awards. This year, a record 351 applications were received and a record 203 awards granted to nonprofits in

the arts, health-care, education, and social-services fields. Grants typically range from $1,000 to $10,000. After a gourmet, three-course, Thanksgiving-inspired meal, MB&T owner and Chair Michael Towbes shared that the bank makes these awards because of the “invaluable role that all of the nonprofits play in enhancing the quality of life for all segments of society” and “to encourage other organizations to follow, to encourage our employees to volunteer and support these worthy organizations, and, most importantly, we do it because we think it is the right thing to do.” Together with the Anniversary Grants program and other forms of support, MB&T donates more than $1.3 million annually. Towbes touched on some of the other ways

MB&T gives back to the community, including teaching financial literacy in schools and providing workshops to educate seniors and their families on how to avoid falling victim to financial scams. In addition, MB&T employees volunteer more than 2,200 hours annually, serving area nonprofits. Bank President and CEO Janet Garufis eloquently thanked Towbes for his “seemingly boundless generosity and his capacity to care so much for so many.” Santa Barbara is one lucky town. MB&T has more than $1.3 billion in assets and 10 offices. It is the market leader in Santa Barbara for small business loans of $1 million or less and a major provider of loans for low- and moderate-income housing.

A Water Efficiency Breakthrough ain patterns are changing all over

the planet. Being in the fifth year of a drought, Southern California is acutely aware of this indispensable resource and our lack of it. Santa Barbara has cut its non-agricultural water consumption by 35 percent. If we can cut usage even more, we can minimize additions to our water supply from the most costly, most energy-intensive sources such as desalinization or the California State Water Project. A promising development that can help cut water consumption even more is the atomizer mist technology. Nozzles harnessing this technology can be attached to most faucets, or by Dennis Allen the concept can be incorporated into showerheads. The Swedish firm Altered has created a simple device that atomizes tap water into a fine mist. Although simple, it has been years in development. The result, per the company,“is a 98 percent reduction in water use, with no loss in functionality.”Although using only about two percent of the flow from a tap with no flow restrictor, the dispersion of millions of tiny droplets of water created by the widely spread mist, makes it just as effective in performing tasks like washing hands, cleaning a toothbrush, rinsing vegetables, or, for that matter, doing most other tap-related tasks. At times, more water is needed more quickly than the atomizer can provide. Because it takes minutes to fill a glass or a pasta pot with water in the mist mode, the nozzle can easily be switched to a higher-volume flow, called the Saver mode. This mode increases the flow to almost a gallon (0.8 gal) per minute. Since, on average, about 18 percent of household water consumption is through sink faucets, retrofitting with these small, attractive devices could reduce overall household water usage by 15 percent or more. Another recently developed product using the same atomizing approach is the Nebia showerhead. Produced in the U.S., it similarly disperses water into millions of microscopic droplets to create 10 times more surface area than a regular shower’s water pattern while saving 70 percent of water in the process. It has a built-in multilayer filter to catch sediment and other solid buildup. The Nebia comes with a wall-mounted bracket that allows the showerhead to be adjusted vertically or even detaches completely to be used as a portable unit. Both of these devices — new players in the strategic game to make more efficient use of our available water resources — show great potential as they move into the marketplace.
