nown as the Victorian Rose, 319 West Ortega Street is a chameleon of a house, showcasing all of the most charming features of its highly renowned era in a modern converted configuration. Lévy is a philosopher, writer, filmmaker, and activist. According to Vanity Fair,“He is somewhere between gadfly and tribal sage, Superman and prophet.” It has dubbed him and his wife, Arielle Dombasle, the most famous couple in France. At the lecture following the dinner, Lévy discussed his new book, The Genius of Judaism, in which he presents his understanding of what it means to be a Jew and the threat posed by the global resurgence of anti-Semitism. Guests mingled in the Biltmore’s intimate and elegant El Mar Dining Room with BHL, as Lévy is affectionately known in France, and Daphne Guinness, fashion designer and heir to the brewing company. Once seated for the three-course meal, guests were welcomed by Richard Hecht, professor of Religious Studies at UCSB and chair of the Taubman Symposia Program Committee. Erck Rickmers expressed his enormous gratitude to Hecht, as did UCSB Executive Vice Chancellor David Marshall, who thanked Hecht “for being the intellectual guiding spirit of the Taubman Symposia for 20 years.” Lévy, clad in his characteristic dark suit and open-collar white shirt, began by explaining that his “book tour” is limited to New York and Santa Barbara and that he is so grateful for this nice, welcoming evening. As for his book, Lévy stated that of the close to 40 books he has written, this is probably the one to which he has committed himself the most. He discussed some of the themes in his book, including his fear for Jews today because of the tide of anti-Semitism invading all countries. He answered at length a few questions from guests and thoroughly delighted everyone with his insight and charm. The talk at Campbell Hall was a free event. his home on East Victoria Street is a pleasant combination of Italianate and colonial revival architecture. When built, the home was situated at the corner of Garden and Victoria streets. That was a distinguished location at the time due to the proximity to the streetcar, as the trolley line ran from State Street, across Victoria and over to Garden, and then north to the Mission. The first owner was James A. Acheson, who had relocated from the Midwest to Santa Barbara in 1903 with his daughter, Elizabeth. Within a year of their arrival, they commissioned builder J.V. Elliott to construct their single-family, two-story-frame residence at a cost of $2,200. Upon the death of her father, Elizabeth Acheson leased the home to Charles E. Phoenix, a druggist who operated the Gutierrez Drug Store from 1905 to 1918. In addition to his pharmaceutical work, Phoenix was involved with several civic-minded causes in the community and also served as a city councilmember and the president of the chamber of commerce. By 1950, Elizabeth Acheson-Baker sold the home, at which time it was converted into the Lauraline Rest Home. In 1976, the property was fully renovated and today serves as commercial office space for the Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara, whose purpose is to enhance the community’s awareness and appreciation of architecture and the built environment.

ith the regeneration of a brownfield site, a disused railway depot, the burgeoning Batignolles eco-district in Paris is writing a new chapter in town planning. Renzo Piano’s new 500-foot-high courthouse building on the edge of the district will be one of the signature landmarks of Paris when completed. The real heart of the region, however, is the Martin Luther King Park. The emphasis on usability is blended with an awareness of nature and ecological issues. The park has an abundance of recreational and sports facilities, including a fitness trail, bike and Rollerblade paths, nine playgrounds for children, a skateboard park, basketball courts, handball courts, and soccer fields. There is even a “green beach” (grassy area with chaise longues) for the delight of sunbathers. The sound of children at play, the quintessential joy of any city park, is balanced by spaces of quiet nature, renewal, and preservation, where one can stroll, take a lunch break, or escape from the hubbub of everyday Paris. Managing and displaying water is central; it contributes to fun and physical well-being while providing decorative and reflective qualities. Along one artery, a wetland basin collects rainwater to nourish plants. The greenery, especially the rooftop gardens and vegetated walls, helps naturally manage rainwater and create a cooler microclimate through the release of water vapor into the atmosphere. Water jets for children add a playful quality while further releasing water vapor into the air. The diverse natuby Dennis Allen ral areas are vital for biodiversity by providing the conditions required for many species: Waterfowl, dragonflies, birds, butterflies, fish, bees, insects, frogs, and other amphibians all flourish. The arrangement of the 500 types of trees and plants has created a rustic, rural feel right in the heart of the city. In recognition of the rail heritage, the old signal building has been remodeled for new uses. The solar photovoltaic panels covering its roof powers all the lighting in the park. The pathways are made from recycled materials with a train rail embedded here and there in the new walkways. During dry periods, the energy from a wind generator pumps water from the underground storage tanks to the wetlands and powers any needed irrigation. The planning and development of the park and eco-district involved countless workshops and design charrettes with urban planners, architects, landscape designers, politicians, and citizens as well as public and private developers. It was a complex process yielding an extraordinary outcome: carbon neutrality, biodiversity, social connectivity, healthy living choices, district-wide cooling, abundant nature, and increased social justice.
