here are certain phrases I find myself uttering lately that make me think that maybe I’ve turned into a crazy dog lady. For example, when I went to visit an open house off of Turnpike Road last week, I realized that I had been in the neighborhood recently. It wasn’t until I heard myself say out loud,“I was just down the street at Blueberry Hill Park this weekend, for a photo shoot with my dog Scout,” that I realized a dog photo shoot might sound a little wacky. But yes, I’ll admit it. I had a date with my friend Kristen, who owns a photography business called Veils & Tails (see veils andtailsphoto.com). She shoots both weddings and, you guessed it, pets. Not only was it a fun afternoon, watching her try to capture Scout’s good sides, but I discovered this tranquil neighborhood nestled between Calle Real and Cathedral Oaks, and Turnpike and Patterson, with an idyllic pocket park called Tarragona Open Space, but known to locals as Blueberry Hill Park. Just down the street, and within walking distance of Foothill School, lies 736 North San Marcos Road. I approached this lovely one-story home through its courtyard entryway. The private brick front-porch area provides a transition from outside to indoors and also serves to separate the main house from a one-bedroom guest house. Standing in the courtyard, the guest house lies to the left, while the front door of the main house is to the right. Stepping into the main house, I found myself in the quintessential great room. The spacious living room is straight ahead, with soaring ceilings, gleaming hardwood floors, and a show-stopping stone fireplace stretching floor to ceiling. Wooden window treatments match the floors and accent the multi-paned windows and French doors. The kitchen is open to the living room, but separated by granite-topped counters. A breakfast bar on one side
is destined to be a favorite place for cookies and homework, or lingering and chatting with the cook. Stainless steel appliances combine with custom white cabinetry and recessed lighting for a sleek yet comfortable kitchen setting. A large window over the sink and two smaller windows artfully nestled between the upper and lower cabinets open the kitchen up to the outdoors and offer views of the backyard while prepping or cooking. Two bedrooms lie to the left of the great room. The master has a walk-in closet and French doors out to the backyard. The master bath has dual sinks and a gorgeous, updated glass-enclosed shower. Having gotten peeks of the backyard from various rooms, I didn’t fully appreciate it until I walked out onto the back patio and saw the whole yard. The lawn wraps around the house with fruit trees, artfully landscaped focal areas with boulders and bushes, and a high fence for privacy. The covered brick patio provides a perfect shady spot for entertaining, even on a hot day. While this home looks and lives like a stand-alone house, it is technically part of a planned unit development called Villa San Marcos. There are tennis courts, walking trails, and a landscaping service that includes front-yard maintenance. The two-car garage opens into the house, and air-conditioning adds to the list of creature comforts. Before I left, I took another look at the guest house. This one-bedroom, one-bath separate little house could fill many functions: an exercise room, a private office, or even a darkroom for your favorite pet photographer. I’m told that homes at Villa San Marcos don’t become available very often. When people buy, they tend to stay. As I drove away, past the split-rail fence of Blueberry Hill Park on this perfect September afternoon, I could see why.

t the World Business Academy’s (WBA) annual Awards Gala, a sold-out crowd of 240 guests gathered at El Encanto Hotel to celebrate the WBA’s 30th anniversary and to honor world-renowned endocrinologist and author Deepak Chopra and the Santa Barbara Independent’s editor in chief, cofounder, and co-owner, Marianne Partridge. The WBA honors individuals who have demonstrated “a responsibility for the whole,” a core tenet of this think tank and advocacy organization that seeks to advance social and environmental justice. Master of Ceremonies Geoff Green kept the evening lively. Jerry Brown, director of the WBA’s Safe Energy Project, introduced the WBA’s documentary, Beyond Nuclear Energy, which urges

A tribute film to Partridge included comments by social-justice activist Suzanne Peck, on Partridge’s lifelong commitment to feminism, and the Independent Senior Editor Tyler Hayden, who spoke about Partridge’s love for the Santa Barbara community and how “that is reflected in the stories we choose to cover.” Sara Miller McCune, this year’s honorary chair and last year’s award recipient, introduced Partridge as a “woman who cares so much about journalism” and about “the four justices: economic justice, educational justice, environmental justice, and social justice.” Partridge accepted the award thanking the Independent’s staff, who, she said, have made her “the luckiest editor in America,” and to the audience, who make the paper possible. A tribute film to Deepak Chopra followed his distinguished career as a writer of best-selling books that advance the understanding of how the body, mind, and spirit are interdependent and as a voice for transcendental meditation and other paths to inner wisdom, as well as his commitment to environment causes. WBA founder and President Rinaldo Brutoco introduced Chopra, his friend and a WBA fellow for more than two decades. He noted Chopra’s intelligence and breadth of knowledge, along with his extraordinary heart and commitment to human civilization. In accepting the award, Chopra said that our species is at a critical moment in the history of this planet. It is a time when we must decide to act in ways that will allow our survival or not. amboo is perhaps the most versatile material on earth, having been cultivated for more than a thousand uses. It can be used in nearly every aspect of building, from structural frames to shingles to flooring and even plumbing. It provides human food, paper, fabrics, and animal feed. It is fabricated into furniture, cabinetry, bicycles, and boats. It becomes energy in the form of biofuels and charcoal. A more recent appreciation of its virtues focuses on its environmental positives: According to Zero Emissions Research and Initiatives, a bamboo forest can sequester 17 times as much carbon as a typical tree forest. Bamboo takes carbon out of the air faster than almost any other plant and can thrive on unproductive lands such as steep, eroded hillsides. In addition, bamboo can purify water from manufacturing processes, intensive livestock farming, and sewage treatment facilities. Amazingly, it can also desalinate seawater. As a building material, bamboo has impressive properties. It has greater compressive strength than concrete and the same strengthto-weight ratio as steel; is lightweight, making it easy to use; and, since it is a wild grass, regenerates itself every few years. Bamboo is beautiful, flexible, and resilient when incorporated into buildings. With all these positives, why are there so few works of contemporary architecture that use bamboo as a primary building material? Mostly because it presents unique challenges to those who build with it: It is round, hollow, and tapered. It also can be degraded by pests, moisture, and weathering. The degradation has been successfully addressed in recent years by a boric acid treatment — a process that is harmless to humans and protects the bamboo from insects and weather. The other main challenge, how to make strong, lasting connections where round members come by Dennis Allen together, has also been essentially solved. Joints used to be lashed and pinned, but they would eventually work loose through expansion and contraction as structures cycled through wet and dry seasons. Bolts are now being used, combined with injecting the cavity around the joint full of cement-lime mortar. This assembly is strong and immune to changing weather patterns. Bamboo made a big entry into the Western building product market in the mid1990s as flooring and cabinetry. But the key was that it was turned into standardized products by shredding it into small strips that were then glued into dimensional boards. Bamboo’s perceived constraints—its roundness and dimensional variability—are exactly what give it its special versatility. We are seeing more and more beautiful structures, many curvilinear, in countries all over the world, even in Europe and the U.S. Don’t think just of bamboo scaffolding anymore but rather of elegant, inspiring school buildings, offices, bridges, cathedrals, community centers, and even a sports arena, completed last year, for international basketball and volleyball competitions.
