Rarified View from the Ridge I
f you’ve ever hiked Tunnel Trail to Inspiration Point, you know that one of the most dramatic draws — and arguably the inspiration behind its name — comes from the views to be had overlooking the city all the way to the ocean and islands beyond. Last week, I had the view without the effort when I visited the home for sale at 2875 Spyglass Ridge Road. Near the Tunnel Road trailhead, Spyglass Ridge Road is a private lane with only five homes on it. Even though it’s city-close and easy to find, unless you’re invited to visit one of those homes, you wouldn’t have any reason to take the turn-off. This private setting, the amazing views, and the luxurious contemporary house itself combine to create an enviable retreat. I parked in the motorcourt and paused to admire an oversized wooden gate that welcomed me toward the house. My first thought was that in such a secluded location, wasn’t such a grand entrance unnecessary? But once I walked through, I realized its purpose. The gate leads to a patio, with a lawn beyond and a gorgeous pool after that. Striking sculptures are dotted throughout the garden, but it is the pool in the foreground and the mountains in the background that demand full attention. I now see that the gate and its accompanying walled entry make perfect sense, encircling the pool and making it self-contained, even with the thousands of acres of hillside open space as far as the eye can see. The home is stunning from every angle. Stepping through the front door, it’s apparent that the artistic atmosphere continues throughout. The foyer opens into the living room, with pitched wood ceilings; a clean, minimalist aesthetic; and a neutral palette. I’m drawn straight through the living room to the back patio, where the real outdoor drama lies. Panoramic ocean views stretch over the canyon and the city; impressive even on this overcast day. The patio spans the length of the house, and it’s hard to tear myself away from the view to go back inside and complete my tour. With such a vista to behold, the house feels almost restrained, giving center stage to the compelling natural setting.
Stepping back into the living room, I note the fireplace and a dining alcove, both of which can be enjoyed while taking in the view. From this vantage point, two bedrooms, including the master suite, are on the right-hand side of the house, with another bedroom suite to the left. The kitchen and dining area are straight ahead, with direct access to the pool. The kitchen continues the subtle aesthetic, with clean lines and earth tones, including a tiled floor, recessed lighting, and gleaming countertops. Despite its subdued profile, the kitchen is obviously of gourmet caliber, including state-of-the-art appliances. A dramatic built-in eucalyptus dining table is a focal point. Down a hallway, the master bedroom suite impresses with a fireplace, a large bathroom, an equally spacious walk-in closet, and a sitting room with French doors out to the patio. Another full bath serves the second bedroom but also provides easy access to the pool and rest of the house. The third bedroom suite enjoys privacy on the other side of the house, and it has exterior doors to both the front and back of the home. The adjacent two-car garage also contains a separate office or workroom. I walked along the back patio one more time. Terraced deck levels traverse the length of the house, offering different garden and entertaining areas. A hot tub in one corner of the yard is hidden from sight but still provides a compelling ocean view. Avocado trees and gorgeous landscaping surround the area closest to the house, but it’s really the wide-open space and the breathtaking view that make this property special. Looking toward the ocean, the patterns of the ridges and the canyons are captivating, while the mountains on the other side of the house present an everchanging backdrop. This home encapsulates everything special about Santa Barbara, literally in its own backyard.

SBCC Foundation Hosts President’s Circle Garden Party
O
n May 19, the Santa Barbara City College (SBCC) Foundation held a delightful Garden Party for its major individual donors, who make up its President’s Circle, at the lovely Hope Ranch home of Board President-Elect Scott Vincent and his wife, Rachil Vincent. Guests mingled on the terrace while enjoying libations from Seasons Catering and guitar music by Tony Ybarra. During the program, SBCC Interim President Dr. Helen Benjamin shared how an exciting part of her new job is having one of the country’s most outstanding foundations supporting the college. She expressed her gratitude to the donors for enabling students who otherwise would not be able to attend SBCC to obtain an education and lauded them for recognizing the importance of having an educated populace. SBCC student Ana Zepeda also shared her gratitude to donors. After taking a break, Zepeda returned to SBCC last year as a single mom in the SPARC Program (Single Parents Arriving Ready for College). With enthusiasm, she related how SPARC gave her amazing tools and resources to succeed in college, including how to advocate for herself and her children and to “not settle for mediocre.” Zepeda has excelled in her classes and taken advantage of tutoring when needed. Through EOPS (Extended Opportunities Program and Services) and the SPARC Program, she has connected with the nonprofits Freedom for Youth and Youth Interactive, which allow her, she related, to contribute back to the community that has helped her so much. Upon graduating from SBCC, Zepeda hopes to continue her studies at Westmont College. SBCC Foundation CEO Geoff Green related how he is frequently asked by his counterparts at other community colleges how SBCC has excelled, and his reply is the investment of private dollars and the development of community partnerships. Green shared that while the foundation is active in many areas and pursuing some new partnerships, its main focus is making the Promise Program sustainable
and more robust. Launched in 2016 and entirely privately funded, Promise covers all required fees, books, and supplies of any student who has just completed secondary education in the Gaviota to Carpinteria area. The state of California has long covered the tuition of low-income students through the Board of Governors Fee Waiver program (now the CA College Promise Grant), but according to Green, tuition accounts for only about 20 percent of the costs students face. The Promise Program’s coverage of pricey textbooks, fees, and supplies allows college to be an option for many low-income students who otherwise could not attend. While in recent years, Promise programs have been initiated at many colleges, SBCC’s program stands out because of its comprehensiveness (covering all required fees, books, and supplies), its robustness (covering two full years), and its inclusiveness; it is not restricted based on secondary school performance. SBCC does require that students enroll full-time, participate in academic counseling, and remain in good academic standing. As of May 8, there were 1,631 students enrolled in the program and more than 3,000 have participated since inception. Last year, the foundation distributed more than $5.3 million: $2.2 million for the Promise program, $1 million in scholarships, $1.6 million to college programs, and $700,000 in disaster-recovery assistance. Programs supported include SPARC, a sixweek summer bridge program for single-parent students; CARE (Coordinated Agencies Resources for Education), also serving single-parent students; EOPS, serving financially and academically underprepared students; Veterans Support Program; and Guardian Scholars Program, serving foster youth. Last year, SBCC served a total of 17,457 students, 7,922 from within the district, with a $97 million budget.

foreman and starting to think he could run his own business. In 2001, Gijón and his younger brother, Efrien, pulled the trigger. Gijón remembers that business took about six months to ramp up. Since then, he’s expanded his workforce as more project came in. These days — based out of his home office on Santa Barbara’s Westside—Gijón orchestrates as many as 18 employees, enough to handle about three or four projects at a time, mostly along the South Coast, with the occasional job in Ventura or “over the hill” in the Santa Ynez Valley, he says. “We’re as good on foundations as we are on custom finish work,” he added.

y the time Antonio Jesus Gijón launched AJ Precision Concrete in 2001, he already had 17 years of experience in the trade. Clearly, he’d come a long way since setting out at the age of 16 to look for work thousands of miles away from home. In 1983, Gijón and a friend immigrated to the U.S. from Oaxaca, Mexico, arriving in Santa Barbara with little more than the experience they had working on rural farms. “I was good with a shovel,” Gijón remembers. In 1984, he started as a laborer with David Bradley Concrete, which most notably built the foundations for the Gregg Motors car dealership and the Hampton Inn. Four years into the trade, building his skill set along the way, Gijón took a union job with Lash Construction, where he worked as a concrete finisher until 1992. “It was very interesting work,” he says. “For me, it’s always about being a good finisher.” By the time he started with Concrete Impressions, in 1992, he was running projects as a
