toured two exquisite vintage homes this week, located only two blocks from each other in Santa Barbara’s Upper East neighborhood. Both houses contained more than at first meets the eye, both inside and out. On the corner of West Valerio and Chapala streets sits a tall, two-story American-colonial-style home with olive wood shingled siding and white trim. White banisters and four brick steps lead up to the stately pillared front portico of 111 West Valerio Street. As it was built in 1894, it’s not surprising that this residence has seen many different uses. Originally built as a home for one of the founders of Cottage Hospital, over the ensuing years it has served as a sorority house, a bed-and-breakfast inn, a boarding house, and a school. For the past fifteen years, it has been a family home. When you walk through it today, this home certainly feels loved and lived in. The living, dining, family room, and kitchen are downstairs, along with an enclosed sunroom and a covered deck. With pocket doors, three fireplaces, built-ins, and period details galore, vintage charm is apparent at every turn. Two separate bedroom suites, currently configured as a library and an office, round out the first floor. Upstairs are four more bedrooms and three baths, including a spacious master suite with a clawfoot tub, a shower, dual sinks, and a surprising walk-in closet. Notable details include two adorable Juliet balconies, two more fireplaces, and, through the smallest of the bedrooms, a wallpapered, under-the-eaves bathroom with another clawfoot tub and sitting area that is undeniably the cutest bathroom I’ve ever seen. Outside, there are spacious deck areas plus plenty of room to play. The property spans almost one third of an acre and sports multiple mature trees, including a stately date palm in the back yard, situated at the corner of Chapala and Valerio. I left the house wondering if maybe its front entrance had once been at this corner. With its long history, just about anything is possible. Walking toward the house, I felt like I was sneaking into a secret garden hidden away from the street and neighbors. I stood considering my options, certain I wasn’t the first guest to pause reverentially before entering. The vintage style and impeccable details are immediately evident. The living room has walls of casement windows and a gorgeous white-on-white fireplace on one wall. Hardwood floors, crown moldings, and tons of natural light are impressive here and throughout the house. I stepped outside to the back deck and was 1817 Anacapa Street stunned to see a beautiful swimming pool below. NEWCOMERS CLUB Holds President’s Summer Party

O

n June 26, about 130 members of the Santa Barbara Newcomers Club gathered at Sandpiper Golf Club for a fun President’s Summer Party. This was just one of about 80 events the social club had last month and has every month year-round. Guests mingled on the Sandpiper Grill patio and lawn while enjoying the stunning, sunny view of the golf course and ocean; lively music by member Larry Williams and his band RML; margaritas; and a tasty buffet dinner catered by Taco Man Express. Moving to Santa Barbara with all its offerings can be overwhelming, related President-Elect Samantha Haentjens, but by joining the club, members have dozens of events planned out for them. The club gives them a nudge to try a new activity or a local business. Members meet people who are equally brave in moving here to paradise, she added, so they already have that in common with others. VP of Activities Elect Curt Luthy lived in Orange County for 24 years before moving here six months ago. Thanks to Newcomers, he noted, he already has three times as many friends here as he did in O.C. He likened the club to living on campus as a college freshman. Everyone seeks the same thing — to meet people and do stuff, and Newcomers provides the perfect means. Some of his favorite activities have been golf, hiking, and small arranged dinner parties in members’ homes. Member Nancy Upton, who is also a big fan of the club, noted that the business

model would appear problematic: an allvolunteer-run organization whose entire leadership changes every six months, yet it works amazingly well. Founded in 1955 and with a current membership of more than 700, the club is designed to introduce newcomers to each other and to the community. While there are plenty of purely social events at members’ homes and public venues, many others revolved around an activity. There are book clubs, performing arts outings, local heritage tours, outdoor activities, community service events, and oh-so much more. Having events structured around common interests helps foster friendships, as does joining a committee and planning events with other members. With more than 40 committees planning events each month, there really is something for everyone. While the membership skews older, there is a very active Young Professionals Group (YPs) that hosts several of its own events each month. Haentjens, 37, used to lead the YPs and starting in August will lead the whole organization. Anyone can join during his or her first 18 months of arrival to the Carpinteria-toGoleta area. A two-year membership costs $135, and if a member serves on committees, another year can be added. As a nonprofit, the club seeks to just cover its expenses, so most events have low fees or are free.
