Surprising Montecito Farmhouse

D

on’t get me started on the topic of daylight saving time. We fell back, gained an hour, and my dog wants to wake up at 5:30 every morning instead of 6:30. While my evenings are already way too short, I was able to visit a romantic house for sale on Romero Canyon Road late Sunday afternoon, while it was still daylight. It was that magical time of day that photographers call the golden hour. As I drove up Sheffield Drive, the sunlight shone through the oak trees with a soft reddish glow, beckoning me up the hill and around the corner to Romero Canyon. Our warm, 80-degree Sunday felt at odds with the 5 p.m. sunset, so I shouldn’t have been surprised that this house would continue to keep me on my toes. I pulled into the rock-lined front drive and parked in front of a wooden fence topped by lush palms and towering birds of paradise. Through a gate, I caught my first glimpse of what appeared to be a discreet little cottage. My evaluation stopped short, however, because as I stepped through the gate, I was astonished to see a beautiful turquoise swimming pool sparkling in the front yard. The pool lies on the right, with a broad path and low stone wall bordering it and leading the way to the house. On the left, a terraced tropical garden offers multiple levels for intimate seating or other uses. I made my way toward the house, getting accustomed to the idea that this house might be full of other surprises, and I was right. From the covered porch, the front door opens into a foyer that transitions into a spacious great room, with soaring ceilings, huge multipaned windows, and white walls. The demure farmhouse exterior doesn’t prepare visitors for the clean lines, elegant design, and contemporary aesthetic of the interior. The living room boasts a striking marble fireplace in

one corner and wide-washed oak floors that continue down one step into the kitchen and dining area. The large bright space is broken up with interesting architectural angles on the walls and doors. The dining area, for example, is given an unexpected window seat along one wall, and a separate alcove to the left makes a perfect family room but could also be used as a formal dining room. I found it hard to resist the magnetic pull of the kitchen. An impressive center island will undoubtedly serve as one of the most-used spots in the house, whether for eating breakfast, doing homework, or enjoying a cocktail while helping prepare a meal. Brass finishes and fixtures on both the prep sink and the deep farmhouse sink somehow blend perfectly with the stainless-steel Viking appliances. The generous tile backsplash steals the show, with a subtle crisscross pattern that ties the space together with a classy appeal that imparts a subtle European touch. Walls of windows, skylights, and recessed lighting are prevalent throughout this home. All four bedrooms have either an en suite or an adjacent bathroom. I kept changing my mind about which would make the best master bedroom. All the bathrooms have luxurious finishes and all the bedrooms have enviable advantages. One bedroom sits upstairs, giving it privacy, spectacular mountain views, and a treetop feel. It’s currently set up as an office but could also be used as a playroom. I decided

it would be my top choice: slightly removed from the rest of the living space and blessed with a sense of seclusion. Back downstairs, one bedroom sits at the very front of the house, with two more at the back. A side exterior door leads into one of the bathrooms, providing the perfect après-swim entrance to avoid dripping through the living room. Originally built in 1924, the house has been extensively remodeled over the past two years, including new structures and systems. It was even added onto the sewer system, while all the houses above it are on septic. With the appeal of Montecito Union School District, it’s easy to imagine this as a family home, with kids running in the yard and splashing in the pool. On the other hand, the home’s luxurious details and creature comforts, such as central heating and air conditioning, make it a perfect lock-and-go second home or an enviable retirement abode with space for entertaining and plenty of guest rooms to fill. As I rush off into the sunset, trying to imagine exactly who might feel most at home here, I’m quickly reminded that since this house has surprised me already, it’s likely to do so again.

UCSB Holds Opening for 75th Anniversary Exhibit

O

n October 24, about 70 guests, including UCSB trustees and faculty members, gathered for the opening reception of the exhibit Campus by the Sea: Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of UC Santa Barbara. Featuring items from UCSB’s Special Research Collections, the exhibit traces the school’s history from a sleepy liberal arts college into a world-class research institution. It is housed within the Special Research Collections, which is in a third-floor space created by the massive 2016 library expansion and renovation. The 75th anniversary is in reference to the year (1944) that the school joined the UC system. UCSB traces its beginnings to 1891. It moved from the Riviera to its current location in 1954. During the reception, guests viewed the exhibit and visited with the curator, UCSB Archivist Matt Stahl, and other contributors. During the program, Chancellor Henry Yang recounted his inauguration 25 years ago, which he didn’t want to have, preferring to just start working. When the trustees insisted, he invited Neil Armstrong to give the keynote address. The students were so elated to have a man from the moon here, recounted Yang, that they decided not to go through with their planned protests. As a sign of UCSB’s progress, Yang noted that 25 years ago, there were 17,000 applications for freshman admissions. This year, there were 93,000, which placed the school fifth in the number of freshman applicants among all private and public schools in the country. Yang pointed with particular pride to the six Nobel Prizes and the Pulitzer Prize faculty members have won and to UCSB’s election in 1995 into the Association of American Universities, a collection of 62 leading, research-intensive institutions in the U.S. and Canada. Stahl explained to guests how the exhibit traces the school’s growth by showing a few highlights from each time period. For the 1940s-’50s, the focus is on the acquisition of Santa Barbara State College by the UC System, and the relocation from the Riviera to the present site. For the 1960s, one focus of the exhibit is on UCSB’s Home Economics program, for which the school was known. The exhibit contains a 1964 letter demonstrating the administration’s commitment to maintaining and growing the department, though the program was then shuttered in 1969. The exhibit also highlights that decade’s protests, which culminated in the Isla Vista Riots and the burning of the Bank of America building in 1970.

For the 1970s, the exhibit shows the expansion of the school’s Environmental Studies, Black Studies, and Chicanx Studies programs. It further spotlights scientific research, including the pivotal moment in 1979 when the Institute of Theoretical Physics was founded. The exhibit has research and teaching materials from Alan Heeger, including an overhead projector and slides he used in his course on conducting polymers. Heeger, along with two others, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2000 for light conducting and emitting polymers. For the 1980s-2000s, Stahl related that there was a dearth of material, and in a lighthearted moment, he urged guests to get records to him soon, because the 100th anniversary is only 25 years away. The exhibit is rounded out with a section on UCSB’s research and its awardwinning faculty, including photos of the six Nobel Prize winners and a bronze replica of Walter Kohn’s medal, donated by his family. The exhibit concludes with a wall of photos of current students and written passages setting forth their hopes for UCSB’s future. The public is invited to view the exhibit until July 4, 2020, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, and 9 a.m.-8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. It is closed on weekends. The exhibit is cosponsored with UCSB Alumni.

If you’re a task-driven person, as I tend to be, this may not seem like the most productive use of your time. But I’ve learned the rewards—both personal and professional —are worth it. What are you most looking forward to doing in retirement? The first thing I’m going to do is build “a room of my own”—in my case, a studio in the backyard where I can resume my first love, which is art. I want a quiet space to write, read, and just generally make stuff. I’m also looking forward to more extended travel. I love learning languages but have never had the opportunity to live in another country long enough to become fluent in another language. I’m also going to take our border collie, Mazi, to the beach more often.

Speaking of the beach, how do you go to the beach (metaphorically) in your day? I read! I read the national newspapers, research about my field, or articles from McKinsey, the Stanford Social Innovation Review, or the Harvard Business Review. Some of my best ideas come at a café with a cup of coffee in one hand and an article in the other. It gives my mind the freedom to wander, to make associations without the distractions of an office. What’s your greatest career accomplishment? Two things. Starting WEV—and also letting go of it. I’m so proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish over the past 28 years. But I’m especially proud of the WEV team: the staff, board, volunteers, and donors. I’m thrilled to be handing over the reins to Kathy Odell, who has the experience, commitment, and drive to keep WEV relevant —if not indispensable—for new generations of women.
