Wedding ResouRce Guide

Trends, Tips, and Resources for Planning Perfect Nuptials

S

o you’re “goin’ to the chapel” and you’re “gonna get ma-a-arried"? Before you book the venue, just know that barns are out. What’s “in” are beaches, mountains, and historical buildings, or regal settings (think fancy hotel) for more of a refined atmosphere. In the following pages, discover some of the other hot trends that may inspire you, find out how to become an officiant for your friend’s wedding, and read about a Santa Barbara family’s connection to the first wedding performed at El Presidio Chapel 200 years ago. This year’s issue also includes complete listings featuring names and information of all the area vendors needed—including cake bakeries, photographers, florists, and more. With countless magazines to pore over and hundreds of web articles to fall asleep to, we hope our annual wedding guide will help you execute the most unique and perfect wedding in beautiful Santa Barbara County. —Terry Ortega

Look for information on how to be listed in next year’s guide in our paper and online in January 2018. Listings are user submitted and do not automatically roll over from the previous year without verification.

Top 5 Reasons to Use

do You TAKe Me To Be YouR

LaWfuL officiAnT? Insights on Officiating Your Friends’ Wedding by riChie demaria

C

ongrats! You’ve been asked by your friends to officiate their wedding! As with many in these days and ages, friends turn to friends to help them mark that special occasion, preferring a tried-and-true pal over a reverend or professional officiant. This is a tremendous honor I was fortunate to fulfill for not one but two very different and wonderful weddings, and I learned a few things along the way. You can become an officiant speedily and freely online, and then it is up to you to file the marriage license within 10 days to the County Clerk at our beautiful S.B County Courthouse. Be very careful not to make any errors on the license, as penmanship mistakes will result in a fine and a new license will need to be filed; the same goes for coffee or beverage stains. The California Department of Public Health has a FAQ section about wedding laws on their website, and you’d do best to review it. See cdph.ca.gov/certlic/birthdeath mar/Pages/FAQforMarriageLicense CeremonyInfo.aspx. Officiating a wedding is an important responsibility as you are legalizing a marriage, so you must follow the law. In many cases, you will also be sanctifying

the union in a religious way, so you may have to consider and follow the religious rites. Beyond the rules and laws, you should be as individual as possible. No one needs clichés about love or the same old statements about compromise and patience; think of your friends’ marriage as a unique love story. Maybe it’s the journalist in me, but I’d suggest just talking to or even interviewing them as a couple, learning their story—how they met and why they’re choosing to officially combine their life journeys, and what they love about one another. And remember, you must have a reservoir of great memories of times shared with your friends, times of abundant love and friendship— this is a chance to talk about what they’ve taught you about love and what they’ve learned from each other. Last, write out your speech in advance, and take time to practice, ensuring these important words runs smoothly on the actual day. This is your honor to say something truly meaningful, to pronounce your friends married, so take the time to know the laws, and create an unforgettable moment for those who mean a lot to you. n

Wedding ResouRce Guide

by terry ortega

THE DRESS: Martha Stewart Weddings and Real Simple are among many sites that say that brides will be wearing dresses that are off-the-shoulder; have 3D embellishments, lace appliques, and embroidery; and have a cape or capelets. Don’t change last year’s dream of metallic colors woven into your day, because according to most sources, that aesthetic will remain in fashion. FOOD & DRINk STATIONS: Still popular this year will be food and

drink stations, but taken to a new level such as cheese and charcuterie boards and craft beer or bourbon-tasting drink stations. Couples can also share their palate and personalities with guests with creative snack stations, such as soft pretzels with dipping sauces like melted cheese or cinnamon and sugar; a french fry bar with chili, gourmet vinegars, and artisanal ketchups such as Sriracha honey ketchup; or even a trail mix bar with sweet and savory ingredients. BOOTHS: A staple at most weddings is the photo booth, but now there are slo-mo, animated-GIF, and flipbook booths that will create the same fun effects that you produce on your phone every day. A new take on still photography will be the use of drones overhead to capture both videos and aerial stills.

willa kveta photography

THE COLOR: According to Pantone, its 2017 Color of the Year is greenery, a yellow-green shade (think lime zest, freshly manicured lawns, and sunlight streaming through summer trees), considered nature’s neutral. The Knot, Style Me Pretty, and Bridal Guide agree with the color greenery for dresses, accessories, and color theme and greenery as in plants, bringing the outside in and putting it on tables and hanging it from walls and the ceiling, even creating the feeling of being in a forest.

o you think you know what you want at your wedding — chalkboard signs, outdoor lounge areas underneath softly lit lanterns hanging from tree branches, mason jars, and cream lace … but wait. Have you heard about this year’s trends? While rustic, shabby-chic weddings are still popular, there’s a new color of the year, for example, a new look in wedding gowns, and innovative reception must-haves. Below are just a few of the fads making nuptial news in 2017.

willa kveta photography

S

A Few Fads Making Nuptial News in 2017

WHAT’S NEW: The hippest wedding trend I found most fascinating in 2017 is image mapping. This projection technology allows you to transform a space (or your cake) with lighting and moving pictures. You can bring the ocean or mountains into your ceremony, and at the reception, you can project an actual forest on the walls, creating a magical vibe while saving money on décor and flowers. As you plan your day, try not to incorporate every new fad you are excited about as you don’t want to overwhelm your guests in a Pinterest pandemonium. It’s perfectly fine if you had your heart set on small suitcases filled with succulents as centerpieces or honoring a relative’s wishes. Just remember what the day is really about. n

ne story began in 1782, when Spanish soldiers and their families journeyed to Alta California and created the Santa Barbara settlement. The village grew around El Presidio, a military base that protected the Mission and functioned as an important center of civic activity. El Presidio, which still stands downtown, included a Catholic chapel where Jose Calisto, a soldado de cuera (“leather-coated soldier”), and Juana Maria Vitalia Feliz were wed on December 3, 1786. They were the first couple to be married in the little adobe church, which remains a popular wedding venue to this day. Another story began more recently. Jacqueline Berniard and Josh Briner of Santa Barbara got engaged and planned their wedding for the fall of 2016. While Jac, a Catholic, had always looked forward to a church wedding, Josh had been previously married, and the Catholic church requires more than a legal divorce for a formerly married party to be eligible to marry in a church again. They require an annulment from the Vatican, a process that, according to the priest who broke the devastating news, would take at least a year. With the deposit for the reception site already paid, 12-18 months was time the young couple did not have. Jac led the charge to secure another location, but weddings venues in Santa Barbara are commonly booked at least a year in advance. After an exhaustive search, only one location was available on their date: El Presidio Real’s chapel, recently relinquished by the Catholic Church and currently owned by the Santa Barbara Parks & Recreation Department. Then, the two stories overlapped: After they booked the Presidio, Josh, an eighth-generation Santa Barbaran, learned that he is a direct descendant of Calisto and Feliz, the first couple to marry in the Presidio chapel. Josh’s mother and great-

aunt, who have a long-standing interest in family genealogy, made the exciting discovery when they consulted their family tree to confirm vague knowledge of relatives who’d been married in the early days of the Presidio. Suddenly, the Briners’ wedding had an added significance of almost 250 years of history and tradition. Last October, 230 years after Josh’s ancestors were married in the little Franciscan church, Jac and Josh said their vows in front of the very same altar. The bells rang for three minutes after the couple married, and they, along with their wedding party, including Josh’s two sons, paraded from the Presidio to the Santa Barbara Historical Museum for the reception. A mariachi band played, and the couple had Spanish elements in their décor in honor of the family history. Being the children of Santa Barbara’s original sons is unique, and the Briners have enthusiastically embraced the newfound depth of their family’s roots. Looking forward, Josh and Jac hope for children and continued health and happiness in Santa Barbara— and maybe some Fiesta soon, Jac said, there’s “El Presidente” in their future. The Briners’ wedding story, which began simply, became a tale of romance and tradition dating back to the first Spanish immigrants beginning life in the New World — certainly an auspicious start to the Briners’ new life as husband and wife. n

self-proclaimed hopeless romantic, Bonnie Hope has deejayed around 3,000 weddings since 1982. She grew up as the go-to girl for music at parties, but she left her musical sensibilities untapped when she went to school fulltime to become a licensed therapist. After school, Hope decided to explore spinning records again and became an apprentice to a deejay downtown. She soon began booking gigs at sorority and fraternity parties in Isla Vista. With some experience under her belt, Hope branched out into weddings. “I really love weddings, so I wanted to explore that a little more,” she said. She decided to rent a booth at an area wedding fair and was flooded with phone calls following the fair. She founded Music by Bonnie and has been providing wedding music ever since. I recently spoke with Hope about the ins and outs of being a wedding deejay. What are your most consistently requested songs from the past? The party classics that people say, “Please do not play this at my wedding,” other people request, like “YMCA,” “Twist and Shout,” “Macarena,” and “Sweet Caroline.” Some people will play a run-of-the-mill reception song to make a special guest happy. Some people say, “If my mother asks for it, then play it.” What is the most played song for the first dance and father/daughter dance? One of the most popular songs for the father/ daughter dance is “I Loved Her First” by Heartland. What I’ve noticed for these dances is they will pick a song that was special to them when the daughter was younger. For couples without a song, I tell them to pick one with appropriate lyrics and a danceable beat. Whatever song cou-

ples pick, they should practice at home so that they’re not on the dance floor and realize they can’t dance to it, especially when everyone is watching. What’s the most uniquely themed wedding you’ve worked? We did a Star Wars–themed wedding last year. For the grand entrance, the bridal party had the lightsabers up for the couple to walk through. How do you compete with live wedding bands or more niche musicians? A reggae band won’t be able to play Glenn Miller big-band songs. What we try to do is encourage people who want a live band to consider a deejay to play before and after the band plays or during their breaks. Do you see the desire for deejays disappearing in the future? The need for deejays won’t be disappearing. When iPods came on to the scene, people thought, “Oh, I’ll just make playlists and rent equipment,” and that didn’t last very long. I think people are going to always need a deejay to play the right music at the right time, make announcements, and keep a smooth flow going, making sure all aspects of the day are seamless. Do you see yourself doing this for another 20 years? I will do it as long as I love it and my clients love me. It’s so much a part of my life that it doesn’t feel like a job.
