THE GIVE GUIDE

SANTA BARBARA WILDLIFE CARE NETWORK

For over 35 years, the Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network has ventured where the wild things are, and no few years have been as impactful as the last two. The nonprofit recently unveiled a state-of-the-art wildlife hospital, where veterinarians, volunteers, and community members tirelessly nurse over 3,500 animals back to health every year, representing an unprecedented scale and scope. Beyond expert rehabilitation, SBWCN promotes wildlife conservation through education across Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties, as embodied by their Wild Talks lecture series promoting symbiotic living with nature. Notably, SBWCN’s efforts will soon take to the big screen: a vivid documentary called “Wild Rescue: A Second Chance at a Wild Life” will capture SBWCN’s trailblazing wildlife rehabilitation efforts in vivid IMAX, premiering March 2025 at the AMC CityWalk IMAX Theater in Universal City. Until then, its force of volunteers will continue pushing the envelope on wildlife rescue— averaging 45 hours of service every day of the year—and act as a crucial source of conservation as the climate crisis unfolds. “Although we’re the apex predator, in a way, human interaction can uplift the natural world,” Communications Manager Rachel Mattovich shares. sbwcn.org

TEDDY BEAR CANCER FOUNDATION

A pediatric cancer diagnosis brings life—including heartfelt holiday traditions—to a screeching halt. Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation provides holistic financial, educational, and emotional care for patients throughout the year, and their holiday programs give families the extra ounce of festivity they so deserve during this challenging season. Supported by a seasonal food drive, their Project Turkey curates bountiful Thanksgiving feasts, personalized through family requests to ensure each unique tradition is honored true to form. Throughout December, TBCF’s Project Holiday delivers a reason to celebrate by fulfilling the wish lists of children in active families and embellishing their home with decorations, detailed down to Christmas tree trimmings. Executive Director Brittany Avila Wazny knows personally the healing power of holiday joy: years ago, her brother was in the tail end of his chemotherapy at this time. “It was such a sad and dark period for us, especially since you remember it’s usually a joyous one,” she recalls. “Nobody wants to be in the hospital over the holidays, especially a kid who looks forward to them all year long. It’s amazing that we not only take care of those wishlists so inundated parents have one less thing to worry about, but also that we really deliver the holiday to them so that kids can look back and think, ‘I never missed a Christmas.’” Both of TBCF’s holiday programs, serving between 50 and 70 Central Coast families annually, request donations by November 15. teddybearcancerfoundation.org

SHELTERBOX

To those displaced by natural disasters or caught in the crossfires of conflict, ShelterBox acts as a guardian of life. Since its founding in 2000, the locally based nonprofit has deployed humanitarian aid boxes across the globe, delivering over 1.5 million people emergency survival tents and recovery tools including mosquito nets, cooking sets and water filters. Crucial aid is strategically pre-positioned in high-risk areas, and efficiently deployed when disaster strikes without warning— and the hands that guide it firmly hold principles of conflict neutrality and international independence. ShelterBox has provided protection on the ground in Gaza, where over 80 percent of homes have been reduced to rubble, and has helped over 130,000 in Ukraine survive brutal winter months. Aiding throughout drought, famine, earthquakes and hurricanes, their support uplifts those to not be defined by their crises, empowering them to transform their lives on the other side. By serving at the crux of the world’s disasters—increasingly exacerbated by climate change and political unrest— ShelterBox is a lifeline of healing and hope. shelterboxusa.org

DREAM FOUNDATION

This season, the Dream Foundation reflects on its 30th year forming final memories for terminally-ill adults and their families. The philanthropy’s Dream Program—the sole initiative of its kind across the country—has poignantly touched the lives of 35,000 recipients nationally, and nearly 800 locally. Individually tailored by each recipient’s imagination, these Dreams instill every ounce of joy into what may be a final holiday season, whether they honor a recipient’s desire to meet a hero, or a veteran’s final wish to visit a military memorial. Its vision is clear: forging a family’s legacy within those final wishes, and offering serene memories that will be forever cherished. In a former holiday season, Dream recipient Stanley lived out his long-held Dream to revive his childhood experiences riding a “Santa Express” monorail in his local department store—and passed that unforgettable feeling onto his grandchildren, Kai and Zac. “I had a wonderful day. I especially loved how my grandson’s eyes were bright and curious. We enjoyed hot chocolate, and Santa came through with candy,” Stanley reflected.

“My grandsons have now felt the magic I felt as a boy.” dreamfoundation.org

SANTA BARBARA AGRICULTURE & FARM EDUCATION FOUNDATION

At the root of every holiday feast is a farm, yet the source makes all the difference. As the only pesticide-free farm in Santa Barbara County, Santa Barbara Agriculture & Farm Education Foundation makes the impactful statement that regenerative practices are the sole way for produce to sustainably grow—and the only direction our food systems can go. The Foundation feeds unserved communities with food grown on their Summerland farm, ensuring universal access through its weekly contributions to the Summerland Food Bank and Santa Barbara County Veterans. On the daily, locals can visit the Foundation’s Sweet Wheel Farm Stand, now coloring the quaint porch of Farm to Paper and purveying freshly plucked produce to Lillie Avenue. Engaging with school children and community members alike, SBAFE Foundation’s hands-on advocacy programs educate on the disastrous social and environmental impacts of industrial agriculture, and inspire them with opportunities to truly do something about it. sbfafefoundation.com

THE VIBRANTLY REDESIGNED PEARL SOCIAL COCKTAIL CLUB POURS UP A TRANSPORTIVE, THOUGHT-PROVOKING MIXOLOGY VOYAGE

If the newly reimagined Pearl Social Cocktail Club were to have an ideal customer, they would be an epicurean with a literary mind and a discerning palate. They would be the infectiously entertaining and deeply introspective leader of a booze-friendly book club, whose sharp insights are as intoxicating as the speakeasy’s bold beverage offerings. They would speak with a keen wit, carry a Santa Barbarian ease, and dress with proper panache (wrists adorned in pearls, of course).

It’s easy to get carried away with this sort of daydreaming in Pearl Social’s grandiose parlor, the Funk Zone’s whimsical gathering place of well-traveled, well-read spirits. Replete with renovated interiors and a revamped mixology menu, it appears a token of times past, yet beckons for times ahead.

As with any masterpiece, it’s the brainchild of a few creative collaborators. Classic Californian interior designer Nathan Turner is the virtuoso behind the bar’s visual storytelling. His penchant for Wild West motifs—proudly etched across his Cowboy Toile wallpaper—invites a quirky interplay with oil landscapes of rugged coastlines and idyllic countrysides. Dusty blush and hazel tones layer a dreamy haze over the space, inviting escapism and intimate celebrations.

An 18-foot-high bookcase scales an entire wall, brimming with richly colored hardcovers and rustic artifacts, seemingly curated from secret corners of the world. But this salon is not the kind of dark, moody study where tortured artists and intellectuals brood with an aged whisky in hand. Instead, imaginative elixirs get creative juices flowing, and youthful energy abounds from every gilded mirror and golden orb of light. The space sparks a certain wanderlust, but you don’t have to move an inch from the tufted velvet banquettes to be transported.

Thankfully, Beverage Manager Liam Baer has already crafted my international tasting itinerary. I ask him about the philosophy behind his pours. “For me, crafting cocktails is about more than just mixing ingredients; it's about weaving together flavors with stories and emotions,” he says.

MIXTAPE
Jewelry LAYKIN ET CIE
KAMATA HOLLYWOOD CITY Jewelry LAYKIN ET CIE

The seasoned creative has no shortage of material: prior to joining Acme Hospitality this April, Liam mixed at and managed bars across bustling hubs like New York City, Hong Kong, Singapore, and most recently, Los Angeles. Baer also clearly infuses musical memorabilia into his repertoire: several cocktails pay homage to late ‘80s punk tracks (for a proper throwback, try “This Monkey’s Gone to Heaven,” a scotch and banana liqueur tribute to the Pixies).

“Inspiration can come from unexpected places—a song, a location, or even a fleeting memory,” Liam shares. “Each cocktail is a chance to evoke a feeling or share a narrative, transforming a simple drink into an experience that lingers with guests long after the last sip.”

Tonight’s sipping story starts off with a taste of the tropics: the Mixtape, a deluxe twist on a Pornstar Martini. A glassy potion of passion fruit liqueur, sparkling wine, and light rum bubbles with anticipation for what’s to come—and when Liam hovers a siphon over the glass, so do I. He swirls on a luxurious, fragrant mousse that effuses hints of pungent citrus: he explains it’s a passionfruit and vanilla espuma, but to me, it appears a sumptuous cloud of Dole Whip. The foam’s impossibly smooth texture pillows the lips and prepares the taste buds for an assertive, well-rounded tartness below.

Next, I swoon over the Salad Days, a white Negroni that brings a light, bright air of sophistication to a classic. Liam begins squeezing droplets of olive oil from a dainty pipette, suspending liquid bubbles with the meticulous eye of a scientist but the fine-tuned finesse of an artist. The drink provides a delicate emulsion for the eyes, and a bitter, botanical bite for the senses. I relish in the savory complexity of its subtle tomato infusion, which imbues unexpected notes of umami.

Though a library lingers nearby, Liam’s mixology MO is anything but by the books. My gaze wanders, scanning the space for hints of the holidays. From November 16 to January 1, the Cocktail Club will swath its refined, swanky design in glitzy gift wrapping. The fourth-annual Miracle at Pearl Social will ring in the celebratory season with an extravaganza, in the truest sense of the word—I’m booking my spot as I sip.

But for now, I delight in the culinary accouterments by Chef Jason Paluska of The Lark. Of the delicate canapés, The Cheese Board’s earthy honey pistachio praline and whipped goat ricotta perfectly pair, and of more hearty bites, the silky Eagle Rock Oysters and spicy Caribbean Fried Chicken satisfy.

Richly flavored and ruby toned, the Chan Chan Smash cocktail glides in next, a sprig of leafy basil cascading from its sleek stainless cup. The drink marks my first encounter with pisco—a floral, grapey spirit of Peruvian origin—which brings an enlivening piquancy, and achieves dimension with herbaceous infusions of blackberry, basil, and lemon, and a bittersweet edge of amaro. It’s lovely to be acquainted—I know we’ll meet again.

My final nightcap is the funky, elevated Kamata Hollywood City. Raspberry, lemon, and bright shiso vibrantly bloom from a foundation of herbal bison grass vodka, harmonizing with the cherry blossoms of sakura vermouth. A Japanese rose hip tea saturates this Tokyo-inspired blend with a brilliant crimson color, and dried rosehips daintily perch on its film of froth.

As I savor my last sips, I lock eyes with a portrait of a woman resembling the Cocktail Club’s namesake. She looks like 20th century preservationist Pearl Chase—endearingly known as the First Lady of Santa Barbara—who flipped the city from a seaside shantytown to the burgeoning creative, historical hub it is today. Perched atop a myriad of landscape scenes, she proudly watches over her imagined parlor, embodying an authentic, spirited stewardship.

“Drawing inspiration from Santa Barbara’s past and the fresh, contemporary feel of the redesign, the drinks are designed to evoke a strong sense of place and time,” Liam shares. “Just as the décor honors Pearl Chase’s legacy, the menu invites guests to experience her influence in a sensory way.”

Among the dusty books and daring cocktail program, I feel exactly that: a dedicated reverence for the past, blended with an eager desire to revel in the present.*

Buen Provecho!

MONTECITO COUNTRY MART’S NEWEST ADDITION MAY BE SMALL, BUT ALMA FONDA FINA PACKS A PUNCH IN ITS AMBIANCE, ITS FLAVOR, AND ITS AUTHENTICITY

The old adage, “good things come in small packages” is embodied by Alma Fonda Fina, the newest dining establishment to grace Montecito Country Mart. Perched on the corner of the local hot spot, Alma possesses all the potential to be an instant classic. The product of Chef Ramon Velasquez’s Mexican heritage and unique culinary experience in Santa Barbara, Alma Fonda Fina combines the perfect balance of cultural tradition and Santa Barbarian innovation.

Though new, stepping into Alma feels intensely familiar. Golden hour light streams through wide panel windows, illuminating intricate tile floors, lustrous bronze flatware, and floral accents. Chic magenta velvet seating and sleek furnishings add a modern flair amongst the cozy details that make Alma so welcoming. Alma’s shelves are lined with decorations that echo home and family,

from staple cookbooks like “Tu Casa Mi Casa” to pops of fresh greenery. With a view of the kitchen and bar just steps from the table, Alma provides the feeling of being in your home kitchen with loved ones—without all the work, stress, and prep!

Once seated, our server explains that Fonda Fina means “little restaurant.” An intimate space with elevated dining that aims to bring fresh coastal Mexican cuisine to Montecito with local ingredients, Alma Fonda Fina holds true to its namesake promise.

Chef de Cuisine Alan Alva asks us how hungry we are—and he delivers! Alan provides exquisite service while guiding us through our meal, offering beautifully presented food in rustic stoneware dishes that are cleaned nearly as soon as they appear on the table.

To begin, the salsa & tlayudas are a classic first bite, offering a satisfying blend of heat and crunch. The thin, crispy Oaxacan tortillas provide a delicate base for the flavorful salsas, creating a harmonious combination that’s both comforting and satisfying.

The tuna tostada is a standout dish, showcasing the freshness of the local albacore atop a dressed crisp tostada. The morita mayonnaise adds a smoky element, and notes from the leeks and avocado bring a refreshing contrast. The ponzu salsa macha offers a complementary fiery kick while allowing the taste of the fresh albacore to shine.

Just when we thought we found the evening’s best, we’re met with the award-winning ceviche cuixmala. This appetizer has bursts of flavor in every bite, with the local halibut as its cool, refreshing star. The vivid colors of the ceviche are almost as beautiful as its flavors. Coconut aguachile offers a creamy base, while the grapefruit and passionfruit deliver bright, tangy notes reminiscent of a vibrant vacation.

As a welcome source of greens and a break from the sea, the ensalada de tomate is a refreshing and tasty salad. The heirloom tomatoes are ripe and juicy, alongside the purslane which adds a unique texture and slight bitterness. The sikil p’ak, a pumpkin seed salsa, provides a rich and earthy flavor, transporting the ancient dish and recipe to our table.

Ending on a high note, the rib eye chicharron & tortillas are an aromatic and satisfying dish. Perfectly cooked with the optimal char, the rib eye chicharron is delectable combined with the creamy queso fundido. The fusion of flavors and textures make each bite a melt-in-yourmouth experience, making this an instant favorite.

Each dish is perfect for sharing (or saving!) and showcases that Alma can execute it all—from surf to turf. We finish our incredible meal as bright fuchsia flowers are replaced with candlelight at each table, making the cozy setting even more intimate. As the sun sets on Montecito, Alma remains lively—a celebration of heritage with old and new friends. Whether it’s the warmth of the dishes, the company, (or the tequila), Alma’s fresh food, family-friendly atmosphere, and authentic charm ensure that this small restaurant has already made an immense impact.*

RIBEYE CHICHARRON & ENSALADA DE TOMATE

A DECADE INTO THEIR LATEST SKINCARE ENDEAVOR, THE FORMER KIEHL’S DYNASTY IS EMBRACING EVOLUTION

the renaissance of retrouvé

Ifirst interviewed Jami Morse Heidegger for a profile in the May/June Visionaries issue, a spread celebrating trailblazers and tastemakers at the vanguard of their industries. To crown this beauty doyenne as a visionary is an understatement: she’s effective skincare royalty as the former heiress of Kiehl’s Since 1851, and the clinical mind behind over 100 of its formulas. While scaling up the company alongside her husband (and former alpine skiing world champion) Klaus Heidegger, Jami engineered what are now industry standards, developing waterless solutions and infusing squalane into the brand’s backbone. Her elixirs ushered in the original dewy glow that cosmetologists now lust after, reflecting the healthy sheen of cellular harmony.

Now, Jami and Klaus’s legacy lives through Retrouvé, the Heidegger’s ethically sourced, ultra-high-end collection that stands as a beacon of integrity to the likes of skincare professionals and celebrity makeup artists. Yet in our interview, Jami didn’t self-aggrandize. Rather, she earnestly reflected on everything she’s learned—and unlearned—in the last few formative years.

Long after our initial conversation, a certain quote of hers stuck with me. “The wonderful thing about life is you never get to an age where you can’t still learn, can’t still improve,” she said. “Otherwise, what’s the point?”

While this year marks Retrouvé’s 10th anniversary—a verifiable glow-up from its debut in a chic Parisian boutique—Jami insists she will always have much to learn. After all, Retrouvé means “to find again” in French: an evolution fueled by an insatiable curiosity and a pursuit of excellence.

When we speak again this September, Hannah Heidegger, Retrouvé Vice President and Jami and Klaus’s daughter, joins us in conversation. And it becomes clear: in formulating a company that’s all their own, the Heideggers are once again sculpting the skincare landscape with an ethos of authenticity.

For starters, consider their pace-setting equity and education efforts. As the beauty industry’s exclusionary history came under scrutiny in recent years, the Heideggers took notice, championing change that echoed beyond their small-business boundaries. In June of 2020, Retrouvé became the first company to sign on to the Beverly Johnson rule, an eponymous standard ideated by the iconic model, Vogue’s first Black cover star. Her standard mandates that beauty, fashion, and media companies interview at least two Black candidates for all open positions, starting at the C-suite, board of directors, and other executive roles.

As Hannah points out, this move joins her family’s long record of pioneering with principle. Her parents sparked a philanthropic spirit within Kiehl’s, which became the first cosmetic company to donate 100 percent of sales to charity. Underlying it all? A fundamental view of skincare, and self-care, as a revolutionary force for good.

“Skincare is something that touches almost everyone. It’s such a beautiful space to spark change because it’s deeply personal—literally being in our skin. It is such an individual process, but at the same time, is something that connects us all,” Hannah expresses.

“The wonderful thing about life is you never get to an age where you can’t still learn, can’t still improve. Otherwise, what’s the point?”
“In formulating a company that’s all their own, the Heideggers are once again sculpting the skincare landscape with an ethos of authenticity.”
HANNAH, KLAUS, AND JAMI HEIDEGGER

Jami chimes in: “In that, it’s so important to have selfacceptance first. If we’re feeling bitter about ourselves, it’s hard to be accepting of others. But when you start giving yourself grace and empathy and acceptance, it’s easier to expand that: to respect and care for people who are different in skin type, body type, age, and individual challenges, all things that come through skincare.”

Beyond Retrouvé’s complexion-enhancing salves and serums is a tradition of storytelling, which seeks to inspire more universal understanding. The brand’s Instagram Live series, “Every Skin Has A Story: Creatives of Color Take on Beauty,” amplifies leading voices at the intersection of social justice and skincare, touching topics such as meaningful representation, multicultural approaches to beauty, and motherhood.

“It can be hard to have empathy for someone who is completely outside of your scope of experience. So through the show and our efforts, we try to enable viewers to walk a mile—or 10 miles—in another person’s shoes by hearing their remarkable feats of perseverance,” Jami says. “We see it as a celebration of people’s accomplishments, measured in all metrics of how success, in their view, is defined.”

Another ongoing livestream, Jami’s “In Conversation With” series, hosts innovators in fields from medicine to mindfulness, who shed light on allowing oneself grace (and often, great skincare). Retrouvé’s product education programs—like its master classes hosted at retailers across the globe—are another effort to enlighten its audience, providing clarity around proper skincare routines in a convoluted, oversaturated market.

“It’s not just about our products or trying to sell something, it’s about trying to help people take the best possible care they can of themselves with a holistic approach,” Jami says. “We see it as our mandate and our honor and our pleasure to help share knowledge as best we can, to try to give the complete facts and not hyperbole. We hear so many things out there from different companies, often that are not completely possible, so we like to keep people's expectations in the realm of what's possible.”

On the subject of reality, it’d be remiss not to acknowledge that Jami’s premium elixirs are priced according to their unfathomable quality: a 30 ml cylinder of Revitalizing Eye Concrete Skin Hydrator runs a bill of $415. Touted as “gold dust amongst those in the beauty-know” by Vogue Paris, Retrouve’s product line occupies an exclusive coterie in the upper echelons of skincare, and has constant slots in ‘Best Of’ beauty lists to show for it. A quick scroll through the brand’s Instagram feed unveils its true star power: Demi Moore, Lucy Liu, Alessandra

Ambrosio, and even Tom Hiddleston radiate a brilliantly hydrated, porcelain foundation for red-carpet-ready glam.

Yet as Retrouvé’s slogan insists, “skincare is science, not celebrity.” The tightly curated line began as what Jami coins her “personal vanity project” catered to her own mature skin, expertly formulated in the shadows of the non-compete she signed after selling Kiehl’s to L’Oreal in 2000. “What’s going to help my skin as much as possible, at any cost, with no compromise?” she recalls asking herself. So, Retrouvé’s formulas boast the highest grade and concentration of active ingredients—concocted of, quite literally, the crème de la crème of her Kiehl’s days.

Hannah knows best that luxury and accessibility rarely go hand-in-hand, and through several of her products in the pipeline, she’s hoping to bridge that gap. She’s spearheading a collection of products for the youthful, blemish-prone visage (stemming from her own struggles with acne), and aiming to sell it at more introductory price points. “[My mom and I] always joke that these products she makes are her babies, and she spent years formulating and perfecting them. So that’s really instilled a desire in me to want to do the same, wanting to create products that treat your concerns, perhaps with acne now, and are doing so in a way that also promotes long term skin health and balance,” she says.

For those who can’t wait, Retrouvé’s existing Balancing Face Oil already offers equilibrium for younger clients with oilier skin types. Hannah’s more inclusive innovations are in the works with urgency, but without rush—there’s a reason, Jami says, that Retrouvé has only released 10 products in 10 years.

“We are never bringing things out just because it's Christmas or for PR value: we only bring new products to market when we think we can make a difference with them, when they have something new to say, or can in some way improve upon what we see out there,” she expresses.

So goes the raison d’être of Retrouvé: making a statement with every move, whether that be in forwardfacing education or performance-driven products. As Jami constantly learns (and hopes to teach), a more understanding, empathetic, loving world begins at the individual level: in the intentional synergy of self-improvement and skincare. “That’s another extension of the word Retrouvé: to refine your relationship with yourself. There are things we all have that we love about ourselves, so dote on those for a moment and reflect,” she shares. “In the long term, taking a few steps every day for self-care is going to make a difference.”*

In today’s digital landscape, fast fashion has exploded. In order to keep up with the rapid trend cycle, many brands lower their quality standards to produce more and produce faster. This practice goes beyond apparel; the jewelry industry has been heavily impacted by fast fashion practices. Madison Snider is trying to change that. She believes in investing in fewer, higher-quality pieces that can be worn all the time—which is why she named her jewelry brand Fewer Finer.

Snider didn’t start out in the fine jewelry business. Before founding Fewer Finer, she worked in New York as a photography producer for an agency specializing in luxury travel marketing. But she always loved jewelry and dreamed of starting her own business one day. “I loved the idea of building a collection that focuses on well-made pieces that are sentimental to the wearer,” she says. “That's what Fewer Finer is about: not having tons of stuff, but having high-quality items that are meaningful to you and that you can put on and never take off.”

MADISON SNIDER

For Snider, Fewer Finer isn’t just a name for her brand. It’s her personal ethos. “As I’ve gotten older, I’ve enjoyed refining—myself, my closet, my skills, and I’ve found that less is more, if less is fewer and finer,” she says. “I had the concept for the name before I even knew it was going to be a jewelry brand. I have always had a deep appreciation for craftsmanship.” And so, after two years of research and planning, Snider decided to take the plunge and create her jewelry brand.

Snider was set on designing the pieces despite not having previous jewelry design experience. “I learned as I went,” she says modestly (as if learning how to design jewelry doesn’t require immense talent and work ethic). “I've learned so much more through doing than anything else. People ask me for advice for starting a jewelry business or a business in general, and my advice is that you just have to get out there and do it.”

Despite her passion for fine jewelry, Snider knew a team of professionals would be the key to bringing her vision to life. “The style I wanted to make was very refined, and it requires well-trained tradespeople who have been doing their specific trade for a long time, like metal polishing, stone and diamond setting, and hand engraving,” she says. “The man who does our hand engraving is 77 and has been doing hand engraving since he was 12. My diamond setter has been doing diamond settings since he was 18.”

Building a team of highly-skilled tradespeople may seem like a daunting task to some, yet it came naturally to Snider. Her background as a photography producer lent itself well to producing a beautiful jewelry collection. “As a photography producer, I was assembling a team of the best photographer, the right models, and the right stylist,” she explains. “And so I assembled a team of amazing tradespeople.”

How did Snider find these professionals? The old-fashioned way, she says, since it’s an old-fashioned industry. “I hit the pavement and walked around the

diamond district. I met people and was introduced to others. It was a word-of-mouth kind of thing,” she laughs. “It’s still a very old-school industry. A lot of the vendors I work with don't have emails, and they definitely don't have websites or branding.”

Working with these specialists is one of Snider’s favorite things about Fewer Finer. “I'm a generalist: I'm interested in a lot of different things and love to explore different paths,” she says. “The people I work with who actually create or assemble my pieces are really, really good at one thing, and I admire that so much.”

These specialists embody Snider’s Fewer Finer mentality. “In addition to loving and respecting things that are well made, I love the idea of being thoughtful in everything that you do,” she says. From clothing to relationships, Snider says investing in fewer high-quality things is one of the most rewarding actions we can all take. “And when it comes to jewelry, being thoughtful about every piece and ensuring it has meaning or significance is a cool thing.”

That’s why Snider offers so many ways to personalize jewelry at Fewer Finer. “If you're going to wear something all the time, it's almost like a tattoo,” she says. “It should be personal to you. It should fit you exactly.” As such, the brand provides custom sizing in almost everything. Customers have the option to trade out stones in different pieces, swapping an emerald for a sapphire, if they wish. Fewer Finer also offers the best hand engraving in the business, Snider says.

There are also endless possibilities when it comes to custom work at Fewer Finer. “We take someone’s old ring they got from their grandmother, and we turn it into a necklace they can wear every day,” Snider says. They’ll take a brooch and redesign it, or they’ll take someone’s wedding ring from a previous marriage and make it into something completely new. “That sort of customization is the opposite of fast fashion because it's made for and tailored to you.”

“I’ve found that less is more, if less is fewer and finer.”

This approach to fine jewelry has been immensely successful for Snider. Fewer Finer has been profitable since day one, and Snider has maintained full ownership. And while those achievements are thanks to her perseverance, courage, and talent, she says they’re also largely due to her time in Santa Barbara.

A year into her jewelry business venture, the pandemic hit. Snider figured she could continue to grow the brand and make ends meet by getting a second job. She moved to Santa Barbara with her parents (her mom grew up in Montecito and has since moved back), and got to work.

“That was when the business started to grow,” Snider says.

“I had built the business for a year before that, so I had a following on social media and had established my

Snider hasn’t forgotten about her loyal following in Santa Barbara and has come back to do a number of trunk shows and pop-ups. Those interested in attending the next Fewer Finer event in Santa Barbara can follow the brand’s website www.fewerfiner.com and Instagram @fewerfiner for updates.

What’s next for Fewer Finer? For one, a new showroom will be opening in Brooklyn in 2025. But Snider says she’s most looking forward to making more connections with customers and making more meaningful items for them.

“Continuing to grow our existing relationships and creating new ones is something that really excites me and fulfills me,” she says. Listening to her speak, it’s clear

HISTORY STANDS STILL AT SEA RANCH MONTECITO, AWAITING YOUR STAY TO BRING IT TO LIFE

Sea Ranch Montecito, hidden away in the peaceful and elegant seaside community of Montecito, invites guests to experience the best of California's coastal living while immersing themselves in a property steeped in history. The four-acre estate was historically inhabited by Chumash Indians; for thousands of years, this land has been a place of gathering, and today, Sea Ranch continues to honor that tradition.

The property was built in 1871 and initially used for farming. Soon after, the Neal family constructed a carriage house. Then, Emil and Hattie Danielson expanded the grounds in the early 1900s by adding a water tower, two guest cottages, and a well house. The Danielsons' influence, combined with the heritage of the Hammond family through marriage, helped shape the ranch into a beloved family space, keeping to the guiding ethos of "gather."

The reimagined estate is home to the beautifully renovated main house (initially the carriage house) and two guest cottages, each offering a balance of modern luxury and historical authenticity. No two rooms are alike, as the interiors reflect a mix of beachy comfort and rustic elegance, featuring limestone countertops, wood accents, and Spanish tile. Within the tower section of the main house, which retains the original floor plan, a tranquil pillow room overlooks the large oaks and eucalyptus trees lining the ocean.

In typical California fashion, Sea Ranch is a celebration of outdoor living. Anchored by a stunning pool, complete with a hot tub, the vacation rental estate beckons guests to spend their days soaking in the Mediterranean climate. Tropical plants, including many varieties of palm trees, are found throughout the estate, making for vibrant, lush grounds. The sweet scent of the flora mixes with the salty breeze, reminding guests that the ocean is a mere three-minute walk from the back gate.

The ultimate al fresco dining experience is at guests' fingertips at Sea Ranch. From the wood-fired pizza oven to the professional-grade Santa Maria BBQ, guests can cook in the fully stocked outdoor kitchen. The wooden pergola arching over the kitchen is even equipped with heaters for cooler nights.

For those who prefer to leave the cooking to the pros, guests can (and should) take advantage of the Santa Barbara Chef Collective, which offers top-tier catering and drop-off meals.

An homage to the farming history, on-property vegetable gardens and herb beds allow guests to gather fresh ingredients. Even the bee hives on the far side of the grounds contribute, offering honey while aiding in pollinating the surrounding flora.

The amenities do not end there—for moments of pure relaxation, a traditional sauna, steam room, and outdoor shower provide a spa-like retreat. Though it may feel impossible to leave, e-bikes are available to explore the scenic paths of Montecito, and beach gear, including surfboards, are ready for a ride on the waves at the nearby Hammonds Beach.

For families, Sea Ranch offers a range of activities—a trampoline, croquet set, cornhole, bocce ball, and spike ball—the fun never ends. It is understandable why guests typically remain on the property during their stay, relishing in the wonderful oasis.

Sea Ranch Montecito is a sublime experience where guests can enjoy an entire estate brimming with amenities while feeling a rustic, tropical vibe thanks to a rich history and a modern renovation. Here, people can gather, whether it be outside lounging by the pool, cooking with fresh ingredients from the garden, or relaxing around the historic carriage house fireplace; visitors are invited to create their own memories while being part of a legacy that has endured for generations.*

urban escape

1 HOTEL SAN FRANCISCO BRINGS A FRESH VISION OF URBAN TRANQUILITY AND SLOW TRAVEL TO THE CITY BY THE BAY

There are many reasons why San Francisco should grace any vacationer’s list of top getaways this holiday season: the short drive and even shorter flight; the timeless charm of cable car-lined hills and historic landmarks; the fact that the temperature cools just enough to elicit a cozy winter wardrobe, yet never drops below freezing. If the above didn’t quite have you enticed, do be warned that there’s a new kid on the block: 1 Hotel San Francisco is reinventing the wheel for what an eco-luxe urban hideaway should look like, reason enough to book that round-trip ticket.

Amidst loads of butler-clad, gilded establishments that ooze tradition—some of which predate the Golden Gate Bridge—1 Hotel San Francisco, located along the city’s gleaming Embarcadero waterfront, is infused with a light, earthy coolness that embodies the spirit of a new social hub at the height of a modern century. For a city that has borne the brunt of bad press in the wake of a brutal pandemic, the introduction of the 1 Hotel brand, known for its mission-driven sustainability efforts and wellness-centered ethos, is a major player breathing new life into San Francisco’s reawakening downtown.

I check in on a Friday afternoon, exhausted and primed for a weekend of restorative healing. Even the lobby’s air is perfumed with an arborescent spa-like scent, as if diffused by the living plants seeping from every inch of the cream-colored walls and ceilings. Earth-toned wood and woven furniture handsomely scatter the lengthy lobby, providing perfect alcoves to linger late with nocturnal talk and a nightcap in hand.

After briefly dropping by my suite, whose floor-to-ceiling windows reveal a million-dollar view of a sea dotted with sailboats and the iconic Bay Bridge, I make my way up to Bamford Wellness Spa, an indoor-outdoor sanctuary situated on the rooftop. After a blissful signature massage augmented with geranium oil, I slip to the terrace to partake in what I can confidently say is San Francisco’s most unique spa experience—an aromatic bath salt soak suspended between the city’s skyscrapers. I sink into the stone tub, sipping on chamomile tea and munching on fruit and chocolate, while taking in a view of the looming Salesforce Tower, the city’s tallest building, to my right. Although I’m technically in the heart of the Financial District, I couldn't feel further distanced from the hustle and bustle of daily city life.

As dusk begins to settle in, the evening scene comes alive at Terrene, 1 Hotel’s Mediterranean-inspired restaurant fueled by ingredients sourced within a local 50-mile radius. Cumin-spiced roasted carrots over a bed of whipped tahini, za’atar fries with spicy harissa ketchup, steak skewers doused in zesty chimichurri, and smoky baba ganoush are menu standouts that successfully meld international flavors in an approachable-yet-authentic take. We smell the “green” flatbread before we see it; umami truffle aroma wafts throughout the dining tables until landing on the tongue, brightened by peppery arugula and balanced with sweet fig preserve, goat cheese, and Asian pear.

Glimpses of the hotel’s unique sustainability efforts are seen at work in the menu, where, for example, the “zero waste” cocktails (not to be confused with zero proof) are made with creatively recycled ingredients, such as avocado pit falernum and acidified carrot, to reduce the bar’s carbon footprint one cocktail at a time.

We opt to finish off the meal with a Napa Dreaming, an intriguing concoction of Meyer lemon vodka, sage and white wine syrup, and pink peppercorn topped with a Napa cabernet float, before hitting the terrace to admire the Embarcadero’s beauty at night. Unknowingly, this

very spot is where we’d be participating in a Saturday Sunrise HIIT workout class just hours later, blasted by morning sun rays in place of city lights. While there were no weights involved in this workout, I can attest to the lingering soreness that begged for attention even several days later.

As a post-workout treat, we take to Terrene for brunch, this time venturing to its outdoor patio and selecting a plush couch for people-watching while we wait. Eggs Benedict, sweet potato waffles doused in “butter snow,” and spicy fingerling potatoes only slightly set us back for the calories burned off an hour prior. To walk off such an indulgent feast, a stroll through the renowned Ferry Building Saturday farmer’s market is a must. Chock-full of local farm stands overflowing with fragrant lavender, seasonal produce, empanada carts, and fresh-baked bread, the market comes to life three days per week, a wise tip when planning your visit.

My blissfully brief stay culminates with a seasonal workshop in collaboration with Juniper Ridge, a Bay Area-based brand using sustainably harvested plants to create natural fragrances. I work to select my ideal top, middle, and base notes from an array of essential oils to design a customized cologne that smells as good as it is for the environment. A myriad of other immersion experiences are open to the public, from sound baths and floral design workshops to a “farm to city” feast held in partnership with local nonprofit Foodwise, so you’ll quite literally never run out of options.

If you were searching for a reason to get excited about San Francisco again, 1 Hotel is it. Whether it’s through details like the thoughtfully curated menu or reclaimed wood accents, fun twists like the “Do Not Disturb” sign that’s been replaced by a “Not Now” stone, or the deeply-rooted emphasis on highlighting communities that make this city tick, this urban sanctuary is leading San Francisco back to a more vibrant future (though to me, it was always bright).*

SHA MEXICO’S INTEGRATIVE APPROACH TO BIOHACKING

At SHA Mexico, cutting-edge biohacking technology and ancient wisdom are woven together with expert precision to deliver tangible (and measurable) health solutions, with the tantalizing turquoise backdrop of the Caribbean Sea. I arrive in Costa Mujeres, where the first of SHA’s expansion into every continent is already drawing program regulars and discerning wellness enthusiasts to the pristine stretch of beach just past Cancun’s chaos.

A salty breeze welcomes me to the open lobby that spills out into an infinity pool; just below it, the glistening ocean beckons. Designed by the award-winning Sordo Madaleno architectural firm, SHA’s structure alludes to a double helix, which can be seen from an aerial view, as a symbol of the regenerative effects of the bespoke programs.

After a quick stop in my room, whose balcony overlooks the very view that captivated me moments ago, I meet with the first member of my dedicated SHA Care Team, my agenda planner. Projected atop a wooden table is a detailed layout of my “Rebalance and Energize” itinerary for the four days to come. I snap a photo, but learn that it’s not necessary, as SHA has its very own app, that not only provides a schedule with locations—the ten-level spread of the facility makes it easy to get lost—but a detailed description of each treatment and activity, while also holding test results and diet plans. Brilliant!

On a tour of the vast grounds I pass a beauty salon, the Well-Aging Center, a movie theater, the kind of gym that puts Equinox to shame (equipped with virtual reality machines by Icaros and Pilates reformers), a boutique filled with clothing and accessories by Latin American designers, luxe residences (thirty-seven in total), a library where daily tea is held, a hydrotherapy circuit on the grounds level, and an art gallery.

I make my way to Shamadi, the on-site restaurant where daily meals adhere to each guest’s unique regimen, for my last unrestricted dinner before my dietician’s recommendations kick in. Nutrition is one of SHA’s nine key principles upon which each guest’s program is built, and every aspect of the restaurant is impeccable, from the stunning view and ambiance, to the presentation and surprising satiation the sugar, gluten, dairy, and meat-free (fish, however, is part of the menu) meals provide. A sleek white piano plays what sounds like Adele’s “Someone Like You,” while I enjoy a cantaloupe and vegetable tartare topped with flavorful fennel and capers followed by a shitake stir-fried rice that feels like a (sophisticated) belly hug after a long day. In spite of the emphasis on wellness and detoxing, there’s dessert—and it’s a gastronomic dream: basil ice cream atop yuzu foam and apples. As if that wasn’t enough, my agenda takes me to a private moonlight healing meditation and sound bath, which lulls me right to sleep. This should be part of every nighttime routine.

OCEANFRONT DELUXE SUITE
INFINITY POOL

I take a morning stretch on my balcony, overlooking the ocean—the definition of waking up in paradise. The SHA app directs me to my nutritionist consultation where I do my best to paint an honest picture of my diet, food vices, and digestion. My on-going Candida issue means I need to cut out caffeine and sugar—there go my dreams of indulging in guilt-free desserts for the next three days... The goal is to not only make proper recommendations for the duration of the stay, but to empower guests with tools and tips they can integrate into their daily lives post-SHA. My shopping list now includes umeboshi (a Japanese pickled plum), to aid with digestion and fend off sweet cravings thanks to its antibacterial properties, seaweed, miso (SHA is obsessed with miso, adding it to the start of each main meal), and an array of legumes. From there I head to a Sexual Health Consultation, followed by a Functional Assessment and Training to determine mobility, analyze form and create a workout regimen that aligns with my body and goals.

The many questions, requiring a lot of self-reflection, leave me starving—just in time for my private healthy cooking class. A unique offering that is both a fun experience and provides visitors with recipes and tips that can be incorporated into their own kitchens. On the menu: gluten-free muffins, miso soup (of course), sea bass burgers, and “caramelized” apples. I learn a lot—like that ginger is best peeled with a spoon and starting the day with miso soup helps the body absorb nutrients—all while genuinely enjoying myself, and after, the delicious fruits of my labor. Chef’s kiss!

Following my meal it’s time to dive into a detoxifying treatment circuit. First, I’m lathered in seaweed and swaddled like a baby, before being placed in a hydrotherapy tub filled with essential oils to calm and soothe my mind and body. The lack of access to my arms (which are tightly pressed against my body) or sight, fires up my need for control; however, after a few minutes, the gentle vibrations of the tub quell my over-active mind by activating my parasympathetic nervous system. It seems there’s a method to the madness. The final hydro jet portion of the treatment, is to my dismay, not a jacuzzi but consists of me standing while the practitioner blasts me with cold water to remove the seaweed. Meant to “tone the body and restore energy,” the finale definitely jolts me back to reality.

It's back to testing and questioning, for my General Health Examination and Advanced Preventative Diagnosis. Unlike a traditional doctor’s office visit, SHA uses the latest diagnostic technology to assess everything from cardiovascular health and stress levels to basal metabolism, and even cognitive function—all sans needles. I’m genuinely exhausted by the time dinner rolls around and welcome the preset menu with open, yet languid arms. A group of girlfriends are seemingly celebrating a special occasion (a few even have red wine in their manicured hands) while other tables hold couples and solo visitors like myself. The vibe is calming, as is the warming Apple Kuzu beverage that’s served nightly post-meals to regulate digestion, hypoglycaemia, and help with inflammation—plus, its natural sweetness helps fend off sugar-cravings. I return to my room and collapse into bed for a very deep sleep.

Day three begins with a meditation on my balcony to soak up some morning rays, which naturally boosts serotonin levels and vitamin D production. After the prior day’s feast, I choose to stick to the “Biolight” menu for the remainder of my stay. SHA offers three equally tasty options to guests: the SHA Menu, Biolight, and Kushi—the third being for guests whose goal is weight control or intense detoxification. No matter the focus on wellness, the days begin with shots— apple cider vinegar that is—followed by the program’s holy trinity of breakfast beverages: miso soup, herbal tea, and fresh juice work to energize and purify the system. A seeded micro-loaf stuffed with avocado (as if it aspires to be a taco) is accompanied by veggies with chickpea hummus, followed by a coconut-based beet yogurt topped with papaya and goji berries. As I sip on my end of meal green tea, I find myself completely satiated, even full. That’s the power of proper nutrition—we don’t need heaps of food, rather balanced and complimentary portions to fuel and fill our bodies.

It's time for some movement. The monotony of cardio is broken by a sweeping view of the scintillating sea. Sailboats and catamarans glide by, as I build up speed on the elliptical in preparation for my private Pilates class. The attention to detail and my form makes the workout ten times more effective than any studio I’ve attended. I leave feeling revived and better equipped for my weekly classes back home.

I meet with the final member of my dedicated SHA team, my on-site doctor, to go over the results of the various tests I took. My stress levels, muscle mass, and vascular health are minimized (or maximized—depending on how you look at it) to daunting numbers, all sprawled across a screen. Unsurprisingly, my mental stress levels are high, yet so are my resilience levels, meaning I can handle a lot. The more you know. I depart with actionable steps to take to improve my overall wellness. As SHA’s Vice President (and son of Founder Alfredo Bataller), Alejandro Bataller explains, “Health is not only the absence of illness, but an optimal state of complete physical, mental, and spiritual well-being in harmony with the environment.”

My packed itinerary finally has some gaps for exploring the property's amenities. I lay by the outdoor pool reveling in the sunshine, as the wind directs my now-curly hair into wild contortions. Timing is on my side and the indoor pool is vacant, along with the array of hydrotherapy options. A steam room, cold plunge, pressure jets, and hot tub offer any experience, from relaxing to invigorating, at each guest’s discernment. And for those looking for an extra dose of serenity, heated-stone loungers looking out on a mangrove forest offer a repose—which for me turned into an unplanned nap.

“Given the beautiful day I take lunch outside, overlooking the private beach below. The full spectrum of blues stretches as far as my eyes can see in either direction, only ending at the emerging skyline far off in the distance.”

LAP POOL

I awake to the peaceful sound of icy water coming down behind me, and recall my appointments, which I attend in a robe—a welcome unofficial uniform for guests looking to lean into comfort during their stay. An ayurvedic-based ginger compress is followed by the latest in anti-aging innovation, the Iniba facial. Such a lineup perfectly encompasses how SHA marries science with holistic medicine to create truly impactful solutions. The non-invasive radio frequency treatment rebalances cell interaction, diminishing wrinkles, improving dark circles, and toning the skin. I leave feeling very posh, and ahead of the beauty curve.

My last full day arrives, and although I’m loving every minute of the self-optimization and rejuvenation journey, the influx of new-ness makes it seem like I’ve been here much longer (in the best way possible). It’s back to the gym for another private workout, but this time I’m time-traveling to the future of fitness on Icaros’ VR machine. Aimed at strengthening the core and coordination while improving sensory function and motor skills, amongst other benefits. Equipped with a VR headset I lay on my stomach with my arms and legs outstretched. I’m meant to use micro-movements while bracing my body to hit targets while zooming through the sky at a speed that feels too high for comfort. I quickly learn that this is not for me due to the onset of nausea. However, I can see how this makes fitness more exciting, especially for video game fans. I cut my session short and opt for what I know and love: the Reformer.

More new-ness: an Integrated Bioenergy assessment followed by an Optimal Electromagnetic Balance session to strengthen the immune system and adrenal glands, balance the nervous system and boost meridians. Having no idea what I was going into, I find myself surprised to once again be in what appear to be VR goggles. These are different; they flicker a consistent bright green light right before my eyes—I ask if I can close my eyes, and that helps me from losing my mind in the process. Needless to say, science is definitely interesting. I’m not sure what effects I feel from the session, but I do know that the acupuncture that followed helped ease my chronic back pain, and that I am very thankful for.

Given the beautiful day I take lunch outside, overlooking the private beach below. The full spectrum of blues stretches as far as my eyes can see in either direction, only ending at the emerging skyline far off in the distance. To start, hearts of palm atop a purple onion compote—delicious The main dish is quinoa and tabbouleh with beet cream, finished off with the most refreshing panna cotta. I’m still

baffled that dessert can be a part of “healthy” meals. And yes, I caved and chose to indulge. Although nutritionists make their recommendations, this is not boot camp, and guests are free to break diets—that is, after signing a document acknowledging the deviation from their plan...

I can’t resist the allure of the beach any longer, and with my treatments being done for the day, I make my way down a short staircase to explore familiar territory. The water is warm and the sand is reminiscent of mud, white mud. I float along for what I consider a mind-body-and-soul reset—nature is the best medicine after all—before returning back to the property for another hydro-therapy circuit at my own pace.

Wanting to soak up as much of SHA as possible, I take dinner in my room, where I have spent an alarmingly short amount of time due to a packed schedule. The food is truly up to par with fine dining standards in terms of flavor and presentation, proving that healthy cooking doesn’t have to be bland, boring, or casual. The line up is as follows: miso, a small side of seaweed (as per the nutritionist’s orders) and lightly crisped fresh prawns atop smooth guacamole. I take my dessert in bed, enjoying the chef’s take on a pineapple upside down cake. Heavenly.

After cheating on my diet, guilt kicks in and I opt for miso soup, hot tea, and a carrot-ginger juice before getting my last fix of the luxurious gym. On theme, the app guides me to my Detox Therapy appointment for lymphatic drainage performed with glass suction cups and essential oils to enhance the metabolism system and purification process, before hydro-colon therapy. I rehydrate with water and herbal tea while strolling on the beach before my final, and most-anticipated appointment, O-zone therapy. Popular with biohackers and celebrities, the intravenous application boosts energy, immune function, improves circulation and oxygenation of tissues, all while having anti-aging effects. A goldmine if you ask me.

I grab a few more juices for the road, and am pleasantly surprised to find The Power of Healthy Food, SHA’s cook book, waiting for me in the backseat. Now I can (attempt) to recreate the recipes that won my belly over, back home. I land feeling truly energized, in a way I’ve never experienced, especially after a day of travel on no solid food. I’m ready to return and inquire about the cost of the private residence, because I’m hooked on SHA’s wellness.*
