ealthy living rules in Santa Barbara, and fitness is king. In our blessed city nestled between ocean and mountains, we not only have a climate that supports year-round athletic activities, but we also have literally hundreds of different options when it comes to unique boutique fitness programs from which to choose. It’s no wonder that SB is an ever-growing hub for fitness and healthy living. There really is something for everyone in our novelty-seeking, health-nut-infused little paradise. With SB on the rise as a mecca for boutique fitness programs, new studios pop up often, which is a blast for the ever-expanding, sweat-seeking population but also presents a tall order for business owners who must compete in a more saturated market, and more importantly, reach their ideal clientele. Fitness has become somewhat of a cultural ritual in Santa Barbara, so there are enthusiastic customers enough for all. Truthfully, you’re more likely to meet your match these days at the gym than at a bar – and lets face it, it’s totally socially acceptable to wear athletic (ahem, I mean athleisure) clothing for, well… any occasion. Whether your preference is for indoor bootcamp-style workouts with pumpin’ music, or a group trail run on a dusty mountain; or whether your sweat method is barre, kickboxing, or lap swimming, Santa Barbara is your oyster. It’s choose-yourown-fitness-adventure in this town, and you really can’t go wrong. So, with so many fabulous options, how is a workout enthusiast to choose the best program, studio, and trainer for him or herself? Although this list is far from complete, we did a sampling of the numerous options in town, attempting to choose studios that represent the variety of alternatives

available. Here is a summary of awesome boutique fitness programs, each offering something unique, fun, and effective: IF YOU LOVE THE BURN or those who love that classic, sweaty, highintensity style workout, Mad Fitness is a great option. Being a privately owned gym, they have all the necessary equipment for powerlifting and functional training, as well as traditional gym equipment. This includes an indoor turf and private spin studio, tires, ropes, chains, hammers, and prowlers, dumbbells up to 100 pounds, benches, power racks, Mad Fitness member rolling tires and looking tough! and boxing equipment. This is serious badass level working out – but truly anyone at any level can get into it. When they opened the gym in January 2016, they saw clients flood in from a range of fitness backgrounds: From experienced athletes to rehab patients, all looking to train at the highest level. If you want to see a change, whether it’s gaining muscle mass, losing weight, or getting relief from everyday pain, Mad Fitness is an outstanding gym to check out. Just be ready to get your sweat on.

IF YOU LOVE ANOTHER KIND OF BURN owever, for some, the high-impact adrenaline-pumping fitness hour just doesn’t hit the mark. Some people need and want a slower, more deliberate kind of toning and conditioning. If this is you, barre and Pilates classes are your jam. Barre classes are definitely the new rave in the fitness world. There are numerous studios

Why You Should Take This Course

F

or a thousand years, wealth and financial independence have been achieved in one of three ways: business, banking and finance, and real estate. Most colleges have an abundance of courses in business, finance, and banking. Few teach real estate, yet it remains one of the greatest paths to wealth for people seeing financial independence. Neither UCSB nor CSU Channel Islands nor Westmont offer any courses in real estate investment. Cal Poly offers only one 4-lecture course. I teach real estate investment (Real Estate Investment FIN 204 — 61449) at Santa Barbara City College. Other than Cal Poly, it is the only such course in the tri-counties. It starts on January 17, 2017. It will be held once a week on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 9:05. SBCC is on the semester system, and the course ends on May 9. It is a 3-unit college credit course. My classroom is located on the beautiful West Campus, where there is plenty of parking in the evenings.

If interested in becoming financially independent, you should take my course If you are interested in becoming financially independent, you should take my course. Why real estate? Unlike the Warren Buffets and Bill Gates of the world, you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to do well with real estate. Real estate investing is something everyone can do and become successful. All you need are the right tools, and that’s what the course is all about. I am not teaching students to become real estate tycoons but rather to be successful people who invest in real estate. As I tell my students, this is a get-rich-slowly class. Why me? I’ve been at this business for 40 years as a real estate lawyer, investor, financier, developer, and manager, so I have a pretty good idea of what it’s about. This is not a course about real estate theory. I have a lot of practical experience, and I teach students stuff that isn’t in the book. The tools I teach work. And to prove it, I regularly bring in successful real estate investors to talk about what they do and how they did it. I have found that all of them use the tools and methods I teach. They all are inspiring in their own way by demonstrating their rise from modest means to financial success. My students tell me that it is a lot of fun, and, often, one of the best classes they’ve had in college. I love teaching. To me, it is a privilege. My students are a mixture of typical college undergraduates, as well as a large contingent of members of our community, and they are all eager to learn the business of real estate investing to better their lives. If I can give them a bit of a head start, it is all worthwhile. And, I get to teach at the nation’s No. 1 community college. If you would like to join us, act soon. You can apply online at www.sbcc.edu/ apply or call 730-4450. Once you enroll, search for “FIN 204” or the CRN number 61449. I hope to see you there.

CREATIVE CHARACTERS Kym Cochran mimics natural formations to bring reality into artificial, concrete rock structures

very fake rock has a story, and it is up to Kym Cochran to tell its tale. As a scenic designer specializing in artificial environments, Kym has crafted waterfalls, trees, boulders, and a myriad of other natural structures using everyday materials. Growing up in rural Maryland, Kym began to express interest in art during high school. Her art teachers encouraged her to pursue scholarships for art school, but she thought a degree in business and finance would be a better choice for her future.

Managing restaurants in college, she received her business degree and began working as an accountant and internal financial analyst. While working for a company in Tucson, Arizona, that specialized in fake environments and pseudo-surfaces, Kym expressed an interest to her boss in the process. A shovel was placed in her hand, and from there she began paving a pathway toward a new career. ...continued p.19

Get Out and See Some Beer

B

eer doesn’t travel well. You have to travel to it. Light, oxygen, and even time can easily damage beer so it is often best to taste a brew while visiting where it was made. Many beerdoes are aware of this and commit much of their weekends and vacation time toward traveling to breweries both nearby and afar. Beer tourism is growing exponentially and its importance has even been recognized by Travelocity, who just announced a Beer Tourism Index initiative that will help inform beer tourists of happening beer cities. The American Homebrewing Association just produced a list of Seven Up-andComing Homebrewing Destinations, but there is no better way to experience the beers that an area has to offer than visiting during its beer week.

For years, Palm Springs and vicinity has been a fun and quick weekend getaway for Santa Barbarians and Southern Californians. This region features unique destinations such as the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens and Palm Springs Aerial Tramway and offers a picturesque desert landscape set alongside a historic art scene with an iconic retro flare. This year, the area will be holding its Coachella Valley Beer Week (CVBW) from November 11-20. The Coachella Valley is more than just the location of the annual music festival, Coachella. The area is a worldclass destination for dining, culture. and leisure activities including golf, tennis, spas, and a range of art museums and galleries including The Shag Store, which offers an array of prints and accessories from famed artist Josh Agle, better known as Shag. The beer scene is still blossoming with only three breweries (Coachella Valley Brewing Co, La Quinta Brewing Co, and Babe’s Bar-B-Que and Brewhouse), but there are some wonderful beer bars

This 10-day event will offer a variety of events like Craft Beer Night with the epic ensemble, Ozomatli, or an evening with CVBW founder, Erin Peters (a.k.a. “The Beer Goddess”), for her Beer Goddess Brewmaster Beer Dinner at the Purple Room Restaurant and Stage. One of the most popular events during CVBW is the Props & Hops Craft Beer Festival at the Palm Springs Air Museum on Saturday, November 19, from noon to 5 pm. Dozens of breweries from the Coachella Valley and surrounding areas fill one of the old hangars and outside tarmac with beer, music, and antique airplanes. The signature feature of this event is a mid-flight rare beer tasting inside an vintage DC-3 airplane. Guests get to load into one of these historic planes and go on an hour-long flight while brewmasters and Cicerones serve them a range of exotic brews. Tickets to this portion of the festival are extremely limited and purchased separately, coming in at a price of $195 that includes general admission (normally $35). Birthday Bashes as Song Tributes

T

he brilliant and highly influential singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell has never received the kind of adulation accorded many others of her generation. Sure, the lovely A Tribute to Joni Mitchell – featuring songs by artists as diverse as Sufjan Stevens, Björk, Brad Mehldau, Prince, Annie Lennox, Elvis Costello, and James Taylor – came out in 2007, and local singer-songwriters have performed tribute nights to the Canadian great, but few tribute bands to Mitchell have shown up anywhere. Enter Kimberly Ford. Like many of us who were alive in the 1970s, Ford, the veteran Santa Barbara-based jazz singer-guitarist and educator, has been a longtime fan of Mitchell. Two years ago, she channeled that appreciation into a highly focused project to re-create as closely as possible some of Mitchell’s classics, forming a band that could handle Mitchell’s early folk music, her progressive singer-songwriter era, and the amalgam of rock, jazz, and world music that really set her apart. A Celebration Of Joni Mitchell debuted successful at SOhO two years ago, and ever since Ford has toured the group throughout California and as far away as Canada and Ireland. The project features an L.A. Express-style instrumentation of George Friedenthal on piano, Tom Buckner on saxophone, Charles Levin on drums, Tom Echart on bass, and Lee Rollag on guitar as well as Ford playing several guitars in Mitchell’s original tunings, who are more than able to acquit themselves on songs spanning more than three decades of Mitchell’s career. On Monday, November 7, Ford and Co. bring the show to the Lobero Theatre – on Mitchell’s 73rd birthday, no less – as a benefit for Vocal Point (previously the Santa Barbara Vocal Jazz Foundation), which provides hands-on jazz education and instruction in local schools. Good music, good cause, good vibes. Tickets cost $35-$65. Call 963-0761 or visit www.lobero.com. Neil Young, that other incredibly talented and versatile singer-songwriter from Canada, also enjoys another birthday during this fortnights. The folk-rocker turned Godfather of Grunge turns 71 on Saturday, November 12, and the Plaza Playhouse Theater in Carpinteria pays tribute

with “Forever Young: A Neil Young Birthday Celebration Concert” featuring San Francisco Bay Area’s Shakey Zimmerman and local roots rockers Claude Hopper. The two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee (for both his solo work and as a member of Buffalo Springfield) will be fêted by both Shakey Zimmerman, led by Pat Nevins, who as the band’s name implies channels both Young and Bob Dylan’s unmistakable voices. Santa Barbarabased Claude Hopper, the alter-ego of Ohio native singer-songwriter-guitarist David Cowan (also featuring John McInnes on the bass, Chris Ulep on keyboards and vocals, Andy Webb on lead guitar and vocals, and Chuck Hammel on the drums and vocals) plays most frequently at Cold Springs Tavern and at nonprofit gatherings, so it’s a rare chance to see them at a legitimate theater. Expect some unusual takes on the Young catalog. The 8 pm show carries a $15 ticket price. Call 684-6380 or visit www. plazatheatercarpinteria.com.

Words, Words, Words

There are a lot of them in David Ives’s plays, especially in his short comedies, which have become a staple of school productions companies all over the country because they’re quick and easy to mount and just so damn funny. The budding thespians of SBCC’s Theatre Arts Department are taking on a half-dozen of the doozies – Arabian Nights, Universal Language, Time Flies, Foreplay, Words, Words, Words, and A Singular Guy – all of which are virtually guaranteed to produce smiles even if you didn’t like the results the election that took place just a day before the student showcase opens on Wednesday, November 9. Burak Atsan, Blake Benlan, Paul Brooks, Paisley ForsterSaunders, J. Dean Garcia, Linnea Gustafsson, Austin Hall, Malena McKaba, Benjamin McSherry, Shay Munroe, Eric Naiff, Kerstin Nguyen, Lovisa Samuelsson, Kendrick Surrell, and Johnny Waaler are the young actors taking on the pieces, and while timing is essential in these uber-clever works, that shouldn’t be an issue as the shows are being directed by Maggie Mixsell, the artistic director of Speaking of

Stories, who knows a thing or two about helping folks deliver wordy stuff on stage. Performances take place November 9-19 in the Jurkowitz Theatre on SBCC’s West Campus. Tickets cost $18 general, $15 seniors, $10 students. Call 965-5935 or visit www.theatregroupsbcc.com.

Collective Conscious Music Fest

It’s not abundantly clear why this music show at SOhO on Thursday, November 10, is being billed with that title, as we’re not seeing a whole lot of meditation or circle sharing on the lineup. Then again, the roster does include David Segall (formerly Courtenay), who plays roots rock and reggae-inflected soul with an inclusive feel that seems to at least produce smiles if not dancing feet. Segall’s set is sandwiched by the acoustic duo of Lynette Gaona and Jon Payne, a.k.a. The Revelators, and The Big Whoo, a funky, eclectic groove-rock band fronted by concert producer John Whoolilurie, who founded a live karaoke/event band called The Selections and released a live-loop duo record under the name of Whoolilicious over the five years since he moved to town. The night closes with the debut of Santa Barbara Improv Orchestra, which features members of the other three outfits playing more or less improvised music conducted by Whoolilurie – which come to think of it does take quite a bit of collective consciousness. Tickets are $10. Call 962-7776 or visit www. sohosb.com.

Sing Out

Deke Sharon, the artistic producer of reality-TV vocal competitions Pitch Perfect and The Sing Off and the founder, director, and arranger for the House Jacks for almost 25 years, is also the brains and producer behind Vocalosity, a touring live concert event that boasts features 10 singers offering current hits in brandnew arrangements meant to knock your socks off. The show explores any number of musical genres, from Gregorian chant and classical choral to barber shop quartet and doo-wop to the Beatles and Bruno Mars. Sean Curran, an original cast member of

Stomp, provides the movement and choreography, adding a visual element to the Sharon’s culmination of 20 years of experience as a singer, arranger, director, and producer – which earned him the nickname of “The Father of Contemporary A Cappella.” As the founder, director, and arranger for the House Jacks for almost 25 years, the original “Rock Band Without Instruments”. In each city of the tour, local a cappella groups get the chance to compete to fill the opening slot for the concert. Airplay, which grew out of UCSB’s all-male a cappella group Brothas from Otha Muthas with the addition of two more singers, claimed that opportunity, and will hit the Granada Theatre at 8 pm on Friday, November 11, to warm up the crowd for Vocalosity. Tickets cost $24-$73. Call 899-2222 or visit www. granadasb.org.

Fill ’er Up

Look, everybody knows this town – which reportedly has more nonprofits per capita than any other place on Earth – is lousy with benefit events. So why does the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County’s 19th Annual Empty Bowls deserve special mention? Well, for one thing, it’s for everyone – not just the tuxedo-and-cocktail-dress set who like to discuss fashion and real estate over sips of champagne. The donation is just $30, and jeans and pullover shirts are just fine at the afternoon gathering on Sunday, November 13. That’s when you’ll help Foodbank not only raise funds but also awareness about food insecurity throughout our community, which is a lot bigger of an issue than you’d think. And the benefit itself actually involves the actual work of the nonprofit, because this shindig takes place not at some fancy hotel or trendy corporate headquarters but at the Ben Page Youth Center, where visitors can experience the Foodbank in action and take a walking tour of the warehouse facility located next door. For the main event, guests select a handcrafted ceramic bowl made by local artists and art students of all ages, then enjoy a simple meal of gourmet soup and homemade bread created by the more than 20 participating area restaurants – including high-end ones you’d see at other soirées (Olio e Limone Ristorante, Opal, San Ysidro Ranch, The Lark), but also more everyday sort of joins like Benchmark Eatery, Savoy Café, and Fresco Café. Plus, you get to take home the bowl as a reminder of the meal’s purpose. Soup time is 11 am to 2 pm. Call 9675741, ext. 110, or visit www.donate. foodbanksbc.org/SBemptybowls.

ashion is one of the most environmentally destructive industries in the world today. There is no getting around it: the business of looking good looks pretty bad for the planet. The average American household throws away 70 pounds of clothing every year just because it’s not cool anymore. We can do better than this,

however, and it turns out that it’s not only Patagonia who is already doing so. Enter sustainable apparel start-up Saltura, who has set up shop in SB with the singular focus of making timeless apparel built to last that has a significantly lower environmental impact than most of their competitors. Saltura offers a line of elevated basics and beach essentials that feature sustainable fabrics and

modern, minimal designs. The company have also gone to great lengths to see to it that their manufacturing and much of their sourcing is local (and within California) – a tall order these days, when domestic costs often make these decisions nearly impossible. Saltura founders David Malina and Addison Proctor are newbies to fashion design but seasoned pros in their respective “previous lives” in the design world of New York City. After both having moved with their families from New York, the duo formed a friendship a few years back after having met at their kids’ pre-school. They shared an affinity for great design and entrepreneurism, not to mention the joyous experience of having left the hectic grind of city life far behind when they moved to Santa Barbara to start fresh and catch some surf. Neither of the guys comes from a fashion background, which says a lot about their work ethic and creative capacity, having recently released a spiffy line of men’s lifestyle items including elevated hoodies, denim jackets, organic cotton T-shirts, and boardshorts. Their goal is to offer West Coast guys the quality and fit that they love, while maintaining the casual Southern California look that will never die. “We wanted to offer guys like us clothing that can transition from beach to the office, and then to dinner and drinks, simply by adding or subtracting layers.” All of their pieces seem to work in

tandem and speak to the understated beach-chic look that (most guys) in SB pull off pretty well… and now, maybe even better. They recently completed a successful Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign that got the brand up and running. Based out of a downtown SB studio space in the Lagoon District, customers can now shop online on their super slick website, which is an art piece in its own right, designed by their neighbors in the Lagoon District, SLTWTR (sltwtr.com). They will also soon be making a foray into a few local boutiques in the SB/Ojai area and expanding into L.A. as well. So, with a rad website, great local connections, and a solid and timely product, Saltura is ready to make some waves. When describing the ethos behind their commitment to local manufacturing and sourcing, the guys say they compare it to the way they prefer to think about food and wine: “Not only does the locally grown organic stuff taste better, it’s also better for the community, the local economy, and the environment.” Can’t argue with that. After all, local really is the new black.

e have some amazing Pinot Noir being produced in our region. Although the most significant growth of Pinot plantings has been over the last 10 to 15 years, grapes were planted as early as the 1970s with a number of producers planting here in the 1990s. Even though I tend to write about smaller or newer producers for this column, I have much respect for those who have been in the business for a while and helped set a standard for Santa Barbara County wines, especially when it comes to the finicky Pinot Noir grape. Ron Melville was one of those producers who, in 1996, purchased 40 acres of land in what is now the Sta. Rita Hills AVA. Although he was ...continued p.18

in town that offer barre and Pilates classes. We chose a few that are particularly loveable and stylish, and each has a lot to offer in its own way. FYI: What is barre? In a nutshell, they are ballet- and Pilates-inspired classes that use a traditional ballet barre as a prop to balance while doing exercises that focus on isometric strength training. Generally, you’ll do high-rep, small range-of-motion movements. These classes are not only effective and fun, but they are lower-impact, and many individuals’ bodies respond well. THE DAILEY METHOD: amed after its founder, Jill Dailey, this ballet-inspired barre fitness program offers the diversity and challenge of a workout you really could do, on a daily basis – meaning – you won’t get bored of it, which is ideally what you get when signing up for a membership with a specialized boutique fitness studio. There is proof of their model in the numbers: The Dailey Method’s first studio was in San Francisco in 2000 and the business has since opened 57 more studios worldwide. In each class, you get a solid mix of cardio, muscle toning, and strength training, as well as stretching. These classes allow you to focus on your individual practice and specific physical Women in class at The Dailey Method needs (if, for example, you are like me and nursing a mysterious onslaught of knee-cracking that really shouldn’t be happening for at least another 30 years). What is great about this workout is that, whether you are 72 or 27, the strong focus on alignment makes exercises safe so that you can stick with it – which is, of course, how you see results. Also, they play really uplifting, relevant music (an absolute must in my book).

N

VIRTUOSA: his super-cute Pilates/barre/fitness fusion studio has its own creative flavor that feels highly personal. They offer smaller class sizes that really give you that one-on-one feel, with lots of personal attention as if you were taking a private class. Located in the upper State Street area (between Las Positas and Ontare) when you walk in, the atmosphere is friendly and you come to appreciate that the smaller class sizes, which give you a chance to get to know the other people in class. Virtuosa has two different rooms full of all the bells, whistles, and props, offering a creative variety of fusion classes on its schedule. For example, in addition to barre and Pilates classes, they also offer reformer classes (that’s the big plank “machine” with levers and springs). They also offer such amenities as golf training programs, pre- and post-natal fitness, and even bride and bachelorette group classes (which I’m pretty sure include champagne at some point). With a clean, stylish studio environment stocked with thoughtful amenities, this studio is worlds away from the big-box gym vibe.

already growing grapes in the Knights Valley AVA in Sonoma, Ron was drawn to this region after realizing its climate and proximity to the ocean were suited to growing grapes – particularly Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah. So, upon acquiring the land in 1996, Ron planted 16 different clones of Pinot Noir, six different clones of Chardonnay, and nine clones of Syrah. The following year, Ron’s sons, Chad and Brent, started working with their father; Melville Winery has been familyowned and operated ever since. Melville currently has 120 acres of vineyards – 85 of which are dedicated to Pinot Noir – to produce their 100-percent estate wines. Working exclusively with grapes from their own vineyards allows the Melvilles to control all aspects of winemaking, from vineyard management to production. Their first vintage was in 1999, and today the Melvilles are producing 12,000 to 15,000 cases annually of 16 different wines. Chad Melville, who has been the head winemaker since 2015, explains that their goal is to produce wine that showcases the unique climate and location of their vineyards. With the help of new assistant winemaker Wynne Solomon, they take special care to nurture the land

through a holistic approach to farming. They also employ simple winemaking practices such as abandoning the use of new oak and SO2 to retain freshness and to ensure the fruit remains as pure as possible. Melville produces mineral-driven Chardonnay and elegant Syrah that shouldn’t be missed, but they’re particularly known for Pinot Noir, produced in a variety of styles highlighting different blocks on the estate. One of their most popular is the reasonably priced Melville Estate Pinot Noir, which is a collection of all 16 Pinot Noir clones grown on the property. Floral, red fruit, and herbal aromas lead to savory, herbaceous flavors and a smooth, velvety mouthfeel. Also

lovely, but produced in much smaller quantities, is the 2014 Sandy’s Pinot Noir, showcasing four different clones from a specific four-acre block on the property. Notes of cherry, licorice, and tea leaves are followed by a rich yet delicate finish. Melville Winery may not be new, but it continues to be relevant with its consistent selection of highly regarded wine year after year. Driven by passion and tradition, the Melville family has certainly made their business a Santa Barbara County winery with staying power.

Kym specializes in crafting artificial rocks, trees, and other natural environments

Happy Thanksgiving! Years later, Kym has worked on countless projects in theme parks, resorts, zoos, museums, and private residences around North and South America. From the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Orlando’s Universal Studios to Cars Land in Disney California Park, Kym has toiled as a scenic painter and dimensional designer to help craft the objects and subtle background touches that brings these constructed areas to life. Each piece adds a sense of magical realness that sparks children’s imagination and immerses audiences in these environments. While concrete and rebar are the building blocks of most projects, Kym must also use a variety of paints, stains, and epoxies to color and finish each object. Every project is different and needs to consider everything from plumbing to lighting and water and weatherproofing. The environment in Florida is much different than in California. When building, Kym looks at weather patterns for the next week or so to make sure the materials she is using will set and cure correctly. There is also a need to look at the longevity of the object. If it’s going to stay in Florida, the materials being used need to be able to handle the high-humidity conditions that they’ll endure. In addition, every state has different regulations for concerns such as concrete formulations and OSHA regulations that need to be considered as well. Kym believes that her background as a financial analyst has helped her look at these projects systematically and manage the wide range of concerns. All of those factors must be woven into the object while maintaining its sense of realness.

For Kym, designing an artificial object is about understanding the “nuances in nature.” Individuals can mimic the lines and colors of a natural object such as a tree, but unless they put a story within it, that object will be missing its own energy and the illusion of reality is broken. If a tree is leaning left, why is it leaning that way? If a tree has a scar, is it a fresh mark or has the tree started to heal itself? When designing an object such as a rock, Kym will study geological references of the regions she is replicating. For example, when designing pieces for the “Australia” display at the National Aquarium in Baltimore, each object needed to accurately reflect the natural resources and geological processes at work in Australia. With this research, she seeks to answer where the object came from and how nature would have created that object. At the workshop one day, I watched her work on a boulder set to go in the SB Natural History Museum. She carefully watered down a jar of mossgreen paint to the right consistency. Dabbing her paint brush along cracks and crevices with a quick twist of her wrist, Kym began to perfectly replicate lichen patterns, explaining to me that it would take several more layers of paint to make the proper color texture. In Santa Barbara, Kym has partnered with other creative types to explore the potential of projection art, participating in projects including Lightworks Isla Vista Festival and events at SBCAST. This new direction signals a chance for her to learn about how light interacts with the organic surfaces she has studied, but really, it is just another tool for Kym to tell a story about nature.

women and their lives. What can people coming to see the show expect? Sydney Wesson (Alice): Lizzie is a rock concert in the form of a musical about Lizzie Borden — visually stimulating in the way of special effects, lighting, and Victorian costuming and audibly pleasing with a great rock and roll score. There’s truly something for everyone.

with Mark Léisuré

Mark spends much of his time wandering Santa Barbara and environs, enjoying the simple things that come his way. A show here, a benefit there, he is generally out and about and typically has a good time. He says that he writes “when he feels the urge” and doesn’t want his identity known for fear of an experience that is “less than authentic.” So he remains at large, roaming the town, having fun. Be warned.

Slicing Through the Times

L

izzie, Out of the Box’s punk rock musical tale of the axe-wielding double-murderer Lizzie Borden, already opened earlier this week, kicking off the adventurous theater company’s seventh season. The piece stars just four cast members, all women, who portray Lizzie, her sister Emma, the family maid, and Lizzie’s friend Alice Russell, all of whom have insight not only into the murders that rocked Massachusetts in 1892, but also the era of repression and more that contributed to the crime. This company rarely disappoints, as their shows are almost always expertly acted, tightly directed, and addressing themes and approaches that are a lot closer to edgy than the sort of safe stuff you’d see, say, at the Granada’s Broadway series. (This is the group that once splatted so much blood that audience members in the first row were handed

rain slickers to protect their clothes). So I was hoping to see Lizzie before my deadline, but the timing didn’t quite work out. So I can’t report anything about my reactions. But we do have some things that the director and a few members of the cast had to say last week, while rehearsals were getting intense. Here are what four of them offered. Q. What makes Lizzie different from other rock musicals? A. Amy Soriano-Palagi (Emma): First of all, Lizzie consists of only four women carrying every single song, complete with harmonies and highenergy vocals. While the songs still tell a narrative, it is not traditional musical theater mixed with rock. Instead, you’ll hear songs reminiscent of heart, Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, and the Runaways – to name a few. Not only that, this story

Ax and you shall receive: Center Stage cautiously hosts Lizzie

– while about an infamous (alleged) ax murderess in 1892 – works well with this style of music because these women use the songs to break out… while in life, they were contracted in all aspects. Not many shows could tackle material like this and do it successfully, making you understand each of these

What are your favorite moments of the show? Katie Moya (Lizzie): I especially enjoy the song “Thirteen Days in Taunton”, which takes place within the courtroom during the trial. I look forward to it every night because you get to see a culmination of how each character has played a part in the events that led to the murders, as well as what happened afterward. Plus, we get to rock out and it’s so fun. What do people take away from the show, what do they learn? Samantha Eve (director): If they get anything at all beyond enjoying the music, I’ll be a happy camper. But for me, the story is a hypothetical. It’s a “what if.” They used the facts as

a jumping-off point to come up with what might have happened. It gives the audience an inside look at one of those theories. So we get to see what makes an American legend, the story behind a legendary song that kids sing about when they jump rope – the story behind real problems that led to the murders. Lizzie run November 3-13 at Center Stage Theater in Paseo Nuevo Mall. Tickets cost $28 general, $18 student, and seniors. Call 963-0408 or visit www. centerstagetheater.org. Move on Down the Road Actually, Kevin Marvin will be just moseying across the hall as the executive director of the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra has accepted a position as the new executive director of the Santa Barbara Symphony. It’s a step up for Marvin, and both organizations are sounding upbeat about the transition, but it’s also got to be a bit challenging to have the guy who turned around your smaller ensemble get poached by the big boys in classical music who share space in the same office building. Stay tuned.

Rock on When the Lights Go Out, which late last month staged a five-day run at the Lobero in which the audience was immersed in the performance via being seated on stage and interacting with the dancers, as the kind of spectacular we just don’t get to see in this town often at all. The success was partly due to the terrific choreography by Jason Young, who has done similar work creating the movements for Madonna (and backup dancers) and other pop stars on tour for years. He’s hoping a video of Lights will someday find its way to the air, but in the meantime, Showtime will be showing Madonna’s Rebel Heart Tour, featuring Young’s work, beginning on December 9. The show was created and produced by Kerrilee Gore, a former professional dance who is married to Depeche Mode’s singer-songwriter-guitarist Martin Gore. Just before the lights went out for the show to start came the news that Depeche Mode is among this year’s leading nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, along with Pearl Jam and Tupac Shakur. Also on the list: fellow Montecito resident John Kay, who hit the stage at SOhO for a solo acoustic concert to benefit his own foundation’s work in preserving wildlife just a day after When the Lights closed. That would be quite a local celebration if both of them got in. Inductees will be announced in December for the April 2017 ceremony.

are workouts that are challenging and give results. The cool thing about this studio is that you really get the feeling that they are out to build community, by hosting events and the likes of group fitness challenges for members. The studio itself is large (about 2,500 sq. ft.) and bright, flooded with natural lighting that just has a classy shine to it. When you’re buzzing around your day like most of us are, being able to drop in for a class and have access to conveniences such as locker rooms, showers with fresh towels, a coffee/tea bar as well as childcare really helps out a lot. Located in La Cumbre Plaza, they definitely win when it comes to ample free parking, which is a huge perk in this town! Bar Method offers first-class service in every way. IT ALL COMES BACK TO THE BREATH

It is precisely this level of depth and attention that Natalie Diane and Terrance Carfrae, founders of Temple, are extremely passionate about offering their clients. Bringing years of training in a diverse array of disciplines, they have created a breakthrough health and fitness program that offers personal training and small group training classes that emphasize balance and self-care as the foundation for fitness and weight loss. Carfrae uses a unique combination of orthopedic rehabilitation, natural hormone balancing, nutritional analysis, and emotional coaching to help clients heal from imbalances such as pain, injury, and disease in the body. Diane draws upon a background in a dynamic eating psychology that takes a mind-body nutrition approach to help clients discover which foods work for their bodies and lifestyles. Their lovely little studio is located right downtown, just behind Divinitree Yoga Studio (which is across from De la Guerra Plaza). Clean, calm and intimate feeling, their personal training and coaching sessions are offered right out of their private studio space. THE CLASSIC ONE-STOP SHOP ome of us, however, love the idea of being able to go to one gym and get a variety of classes, including the traditional weights and cardio room, along with all the amenities that gyms offer including showers, saunas, a pool, and a rockin’ smoothie bar. (All I need is a smoothie and a sauna and I’m sold.) For this, one of the longest standing fitness establishments in town, SWELL: Santa Barbara Athletic Club, is right on-point and you need look no further. Many people don’t know that SWELL offers an array of different classes from spinning to Pilates, yoga, kickboxing, weights classes, and even group runs and swims offered by local athletic clothing company Lole. Best of all, for those of us who really just want to dance (and, yes, get in shape too) SWELL also offers fun, upbeat dance classes Brazilian Dance, Nia, and hip hop! For those who like the gym vibe but also appreciate the one-on-one attention, SWELL also offers in-house private and small-group personal training sessions. The point is, there is a reason that many patrons have stayed with them for years.

ith all the opportunities for sweat, toning, and iron pumping, it’s essential to balance it all out by dropping in, getting focused, and taking a deep ole breath. That means, yes, Yoga – a physical practice guided by the breath, is a critical part of a balanced fitness regime. SB has many amazing yoga studios to choose from in town (lucky us!). YASA Yoga occupies a building that has a unique historical legacy that lends itself well to the creative and vibrant practice that they offer their students: the YASA Yoga building was home to The Flying A studios in the early 1900s and was one of the largest film studios in the country at the time, frequented by stars such as Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pickford. It is possible that many of Chaplin’s famous poses and silent expressions were created in the building, in the same space people now practice yoga poses and express themselves in an entirely different, more introspective way. Why we’re obsessed with it: Interesting note for those who suffer from hearing loss, YASA is the only yoga studio on the West Coast to offer solutions for the hearing impaired (hearing loss affects a shocking 20 percent of the population). Through the use of a “hearing loop” technology made by a local company OTOjOY, those with hearing loss can attend yoga classes here worry-free. Find out more at: otojoy.com. YASA Yoga also offers a beautiful space, loads of great classes, and the sweet OM Lounge and shop. It’s a modern twist on the age-old art and practice of yoga. YOUR BODY IS YOUR TEMPLE

hile on the subject of mind-bodyspirit wellness: a lot of fitness programs claim to offer holistic mindbody transformation. Many programs also offer nutrition advice and meal planning options as additions to their fitness programs. These accompaniments are often Terrance Carfrae leading a group class at Temple helpful, but the reality is that making changes on all levels often requires a lot of support and customized guidance.

FITNESS F.O.M.O.? YOUR PRAYERS ANSWERED hile the goal of many of these boutique studios is to attract customers who resonate with their offering, there will always be those (yours truly) who just can’t stand the idea of missing out on all of the great options. So, for those who truly suffer from fitness program FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out), fear no longer – there is a solution for you! One technology-driven platform has come to town, offering an option for those who want to experience the many different studios here and mix up their workouts, without having to buy multiple monthly memberships (which would get pricy fast!). Enter Santa Barbara StudioPass, a universal fitness membership that gives you access to multiple studios in town (offering somewhere between 70 to 90 classes per day at every hour). There is one set fee, and you can cancel at any time. One thing to note, however, is that you are limited to three classes per studio each month – but with 17 different studios to choose from, it’s really not too big of a deal! The idea is to offer access to a variety of classes to help keep you engaged in workouts through variety and balance (some of the programs mentioned in this story are part of StudioPass, by the way). It’s really a cool concept and one that’s growing in popularity in major cities throughout California. Definitely check them out (especially if you can relate to fitness FOMO – it’s a real thing).

W

BECAUSE IT FEELS GOOD! n any given day of the year in Santa Barbara, you can choose from hundreds of different ways to workout and be active, indoor, outdoor, with community, or on your own… the options are really only limited by the imagination. And luckily we have a community of imaginative and entrepreneurial people who are part of the ever-expanding array of boutique fitness options in town. When it comes down to it, though, the coolest part about the rising fitness scene here in SB (even though, yes, athletic clothing really can make your butt look 10 years younger) is that so many people are getting committed to their health, being active, and improving their overall wellness. Of all things for people to be going ga-ga over, it’s awesome that fitness is what’s trending. The difference with this fad is that it’s most likely here to stay. Why? Because being strong and fit just feels good, and the addiction to a vital natural high is a good one to have, and a hard one to break! The day that squat jumps and Pilates become your vice (or, one of them) is a good day, indeed.

Valley, I have joined in on the festivities and will be partnering with the Coachella Valley Art Scene to create the event Beer Craft. At this easygoing social event, guests will get to enjoy craft beer and adorn their own beer coozies and other brew-related crafts while listening to DJs and interacting with local artists. As attendees finish their beers, they will get to decorate the empty beer bottle with marker pens and other art supplies. Once guests are finished beautifying their bottle, they will get to place it into an interactive, mobile sculpture that will illuminate their drawn images onto the surrounding surfaces. The event promises to be an evening full of creativity, music, and tasty brews. Buckles ‘N’ Brews Recap This past week saw the first annual Buckles ‘N’ Brews Invitational festival at the Carriage and Western Art Museum of Santa Barbara. The event was organized by the producers of Surf

‘n’ Suds as a benefit for the Kiwanis Club of Santa Barbara and entertained an intimate crowd with specialty brews from about two dozen brewers. In addition to the range of rare beers offered, there was a competition for “Best Beer” organized by the local beer app, Loyale, where attendees could vote for their favorite brews using a QR code vote. After an afternoon of tasting, the crowd voted Captain Fatty’s Calypso Cucumber Sour as their favorite brew of the bunch. This one featured the refreshing character of cucumber accented by the snap of lemons on top of a tart Berliner weisse-style base beer.

This beer has become so popular, it is going to be made one of Captain Fatty’s mainstays – so swing by the brewery sometime to give it a try. Although Calypso Cucumber Sour was voted first place, there were many other interesting brews at the event. Four Horsemen of the Abockalypse from The Brewhouse was an amber bock beer that used a mélange of chiles including ghost peppers and the world’s hottest, the Carolina Reaper. The spiciness was particularly wellbalanced and added a warm burn that embraced the malt flavors without overpowering them. brewLAB brought a 2015 Elderflower Saison that had a subtle perfume of elderflowers amid bright, fruity esters, and an extra dose

of funkiness from aging the beer on Brettanomyces, a wild microorganism. Ladyface Ale Companie from Agoura Hills brought one of the strongest offerings at the event. Trebuchet was a Golden Farmhouse Sour with Lactobacillus cultures and aged in Sauvignon blanc barrels. The tangy acidity of the beer was accented by a complex fruit character of peach, apples, and passion fruit. Their La Trappistine 2015 was a Dark Belgian Strong ale with Sangiovese grape must and had a peppery earthen flavor with undertones of cranberries and red grapes. Overall, the festival was an entertaining afternoon set among games, carriages, and specialty brews.

REJUVENATE AND RELAX WITH OUR SUMMER SPECIALS: SWEDISH MASSAGE AND PEDICURE: $109 SUGARSCRUB AND PEDICURE: $109

WHAT: “Tuscan-style Retreat” – Just so you can feel even more like you’re on vacation all the time, even though you already live in Santa Barbara! WHERE: 86 Skyline Circle, Santa Barbara HOW MUCH: $1,869,000 WHY: (SO many reasons!) This stunning 3-bedroom, 2.5-bath Tuscan-style home is a sweet Mesa area find. It’s located a short drive from Hendry’s Beach and Mesa Lane, and is also a few minutes’ drive from downtown Santa Barbara. The house is situated on about a quarter acre of manicured grounds and has a pretty complete set up for living la vida mellow: with a pool and a pool cabana, as well as an aboveground spa, you’re pretty much set up for an in-home retreat. Once you’ve gotten your R&R, however, this home is set up quite nicely for entertaining with nice big decks that will inevitably have your friends assuming that you will be hosting the party from now on. For the chefs, this home includes a gourmet kitchen with commercial-style appliances, custom cabinetry, and an oversize island (my favorite feature). The master suite is quite sumptuous, with cathedral ceilings and spacious walk-in closet (really, who doesn’t love a walk-in closet?). The master bath has dual vanities with custom tile and, yep, a Jacuzzi tub. If you need space for your cars like you do your clothes, you’ll have an oversized detached two car garage, which can be accessed via private driveway in addition to ample additional off-street parking – one of the perks of this area, for sure. This home is a joyful hidden oasis that is centrally located and dreamy all at once.

JAK THE RIPPER

I

s it nature or nurture? Genetic versus learned? Inherited or acquired? Whatever the answer, local boy Jak Zeits has got something going for him. “I learned to surf Leadbetter on a soft top with my dad when I was six years old. Wait, really, I was standing up on my boogie board when I was five,” Jak remembered. Now he’s 10 years old, sponsored by Billabong, Channel Islands Surf Boards, Tiki Toss, and Surf Happens – and on par to be a prodigy. Jak has both nature and nurture on his side. He lives on the Mesa, just doors up from the Pacific Ocean. His dad, Adam, is an avid surfer and is credited by Jak to be his favorite coach (along with Chris Keet from Surf Happens). Since Jak was born in Santa Barbara, he has never been far from the beach. Right now, Jak is undefeated in his age division in the NSSA (National Scholastic Surfing Association) Gold

Jak’s in action

the Volcom Totally Crustaceous Tour at Surfer’s Point in Ventura, the Coffin Brother Surf Out, and two Lakey Peterson Keiki Bowl contests here in Santa Barbara. He even took first in the Billabong Still Frothy Festival at the Pismo Beach Pier after slicing open his foot on a pier piling while paddling out for in the final. With all of this winning, Jak is now being invited to international competitions, and the sponsors continue to line up at his door. The ripper himself

Coast Explorers conference and is a solid 2nd place overall in the Southwest Open conference, the most competitive of its kind in North America. In the past year, he has numerous titles including

HANG TEN “My favorite surfers are Parker and Connor Coffin,” Jak commented, “and the best spots to surf around here are Sandspit and Lowers Left.” The Coffin brothers grew up surfing the same Santa Barbara spots that Jak loves. They are now professional surfing sensations and Jak’s idols. Surrounded by neighborhood talent and sweet surf locations, Jak has a lot going on to support his passion. He started out with the Surf Happens program that led to him being invited to join the elite travel team. This was the beginning of his competitive career. This town has a great deal of backing for young riders. Davey Smith, a

recently retired local legend and coach from Channel Islands Rider Sessions, helped Jak to foster his goofy-footed talent. Chris Keet from Surf Happens continues to coach Jak and other groms. Surf Happens offers lessons, after-school programs, and camps for kids (and adults) who are interested in the sport. All of this would be nothing without parents who are willing to put their kids’ passion as a priority. Jak’s biggest sponsors, Adam and Sabrina (a.k.a. Mom and Dad), travel up and down the coastline to take him to all of his competitions. They wake at the crack of dawn to get him out in the water before the day unfolds. They follow his sandy footprints to reinforce his dreams of one day being a pro surfer. “I love to surf because I can do whatever I want when I’m out on those waves,” Jak exclaimed. Aren’t you lucky, little Jak, that you can hop up on a board and bridle those waves! There aren’t many 10-year-olds who can conquer the ocean.

BRIANA’S BEST BET

D

o you want to go out and watch these little rippers do their thing? The next Gold Coast Conference NSSA competition will be held at Ventura Harbor on December 10-11. Jak will be out there, alongside many other talented riders. Also, the 2016 Lakey Peterson Keiki Bowl is happening at Leadbetter Point in Santa Barbara on Saturday, December 17. Both of these spots will highlight the talented youth in our community. If you are interested in getting started with the sport, be sure to contact the guys at Surf Happens for more information: www.surfhappens.com.

THE SENSITIVE GENE

I

t’s around nine in the evening as we turn into my parents’ neighborhood, tired from five days of road trips and friend visits. All I want is to lie down on the couch and do nothing. In my head, I’ve already picked out the perfect pair of sweats to slip into. “I can’t wait to chill, put on the fire, and watch a movie,” I said. He shrugs his shoulders. “Yeah, but it’s a gas fireplace. Not very efficient.” I feel my chest tighten and I restrain from biting back. That lasted a good five minutes. “I feel like you’re criticizing my family! Like their home isn’t good enough.” He throws his hands in the air and huffs, “That’s not what I meant at all!” He shakes his head and heavy silence fills the car. I take a beat. I know he didn’t mean it that way. He’s been nothing but supportive. Just a day before, he spent three hours at my grandmother’s retirement home – in a 14-by-12-foot room – hearing stories from my crazy aunt, an uncle, my parents, sister and her husband. He survived with no complaints, and now I’m questioning his motives? Lord, help me. We empty the car luggage in silence. No eye contact. No words exchanged. A first for us. I start to feel guilty. After the last bag is dragged out, I block the doorway from the garage to the house so we can talk it out and get the bad mojo out fast. “Babe, talk to me,” I said.

My immediate family is a tight unit “I just feel like I have to walk on eggshells with you,” he says. “I have to watch every word I say to make sure you don’t get mad!” This isn’t the first time I’ve heard this. Almost every past boyfriend has mentioned this before. And here it is again, only this time coming from the love of my life, which makes it hurt even more. “I’m sorry,” my words crack as tears blur my vision, “I’m sensitive and I don’t want to be!” My initial reaction is to act defensive, argue back, and not admit I’m in the wrong. But I don’t want an ego trip to stain this relationship. I love this man and see a life with him, yet the icky-ness had surfaced and I began to wonder if he can deal with me dealing with it. I know I have to work through this personal BS at some point. I just hope I can get through this one quickly and with him by my side. “It’s a learned trait and something I have to work on… I am working on it!” He pulls me close and tears make little rings on his gray shirt. “It’s me! I’m the one critiquing,” I sniffle and wipe my nose with the back of my hand. “You got thrown in the crossfire. It’s not fair!” Welcome to the inner torture of a highly sensitive being. It’s been in motion since the day I was born. I guess you could say I’m a “Daddy’s girl.” My immediate family is a tight unit. From elementary on, school days ended with a beautiful dinner spread created by mom, and the four of us around the table exchanging news, grades, and whatever else a traditional American nuclear family may discuss. But with my dad, we were always careful. He took some words as a critique rather than comments. And more than a handful of conversations ended with the classic backtrack: “No! That’s not what I meant!” Now the past was haunting me in a new way. In a way that could threaten my relationship. I had turned into my father in this regard, and it scared me. To be fair, dad has always done the best he could, making our childhood wholesome, traditional, and safe. I think how much he worked to alter ways from his parents, vowing not to pressure his kids to perfection as he experienced as a child. Now I’m in a similar position and it kinda feels like admitting to this makes me a bad daughter. That I’m losing an identity by letting go of what I’ve always known. But I just have to be vigilant, aware, and work hard to become the best person I can be. And if I’m strong enough, I’ll evolve into a better person for the loved ones in my life. Just like my father taught me.
