PUBLISHER’S NOTE
THE LAST OF THE SPRING BREAK CROWD is still in town, savoring our incredible snow as well as early spring in the City Different. By all accounts, all the rain and snow over the winter is going to yield wonderful dividends in our flowers, plants and trees this spring. I am especially happy to report that Ski Santa Fe has decided to extend the ski season by an extra week, meaning we will be on the mountain until April 14. Of course, there are lots of other things going on in town too. Friday, March 22, Charlie Burk’s Journey in Abstraction show kicks off at Winterowd Fine Art. Charlie's art has been evolving through the years and he is now considered a true star in the Santa Fe art world. La Moda IV, a rare fashion show, comes to Santa Fe on the 22nd at noon, presented by natasha SANTA FE. Given the number of folks from Santa Fe that have made it onto Project Runway, this could be significant. Later on, enjoy some nightlife with great music everywhere around town. Some of my favorites are Savor, a Cuban-infused band at La Fonda, future house music DJ Malsaa at Meow Wolf, and jazz at Tonic. Check out the music listings—they’ve become extensive. Our little town is truly coming alive on the music scene. It’s amazing to look at all these activities and realize it isn’t even summer yet. If you’re still shaking off the winter blues, this is the perfect weekend to celebrate spring and soak up all the great activities available to us. Just be sure to have fun.

THE EZRA DUO
STAN FORD
PERFORMANCE Jacob Clewell, viola, and Sasha Bult-Ito, piano, have performed together as The Ezra Duo since 2016, when both musicians were studying at the Glenn Gould School in Toronto. The young duo already has won several awards. They swing through New Mexico on their Women in Music tour, presenting a program of works by female composers. Rebecca Clarke (1886–1979) is one composer included on the program. A violist herself, Clarke was a professional symphonic musician as well as a noted composer. The Ezras will also perform Jennifer Higdon, Clara Schumann, and other composers current and historic.—Lisa Van Sickle The Ezra Duo, March 21, 7 pm, $13–$25, First Presbyterian Church of Santa Fe, 208 Grant, theezraduo.com. EVENT This group fashion show, produced by natasha SANTA FE, presents art to wear by some of the best designers Northern New Mexico has to offer. Models showcase eyecatching original clothing, jewelry, and accessories at ELOISA Restaurant in the Drury Plaza Hotel. CIVIL WAR ENCAMPMENT
EVENT At this annual event, experience life in New Mexico during the Civil War. Sprinkled throughout the day are expert lectures on the era, including one covering medicine and another on the surrender of Vicksburg. At noon is a live raptor presentation from the New Mexico Wildlife Center, and at 2 pm a black powder presentation shows off the raw power of weapons such as rifles, cannons, and muskets. In the kids’ tent, children can see what it was like growing up in the 1860s, decorating corn husk creations and playing popular historical games like trap ball and quoits. Full of opportunities to observe and interact with living history participants, the day offers learning experiences for all ages.—SE Civil War Encampment, March 23, 10:30 am–3:45 pm, free, Pecos National Historical Park, 1 NM-63, Pecos, nps.gov/peco.

Ryan Singer (Diné) is influenced in equal parts by popular culture and the Navajo culture in which he was raised. The Albuquerque-based painter is known for looking at Native American and mainstream life through a Pop Art–inspired lens, creating profoundly unique narratives that examine racial stereotypes and ecological issues. In Ryan Singer: Childhood Mythologies, showing at form & concept through May, the artist weaves memories of vivid childhood nightmares with subtle sociopolitical commentary. The result is dozens of acrylic paintings of bright desert landscapes imbued with personal meaning and full of recognizable comic book and pop culture characters.—Sarah Eddy

PREVIEWS
JOURNEY IN ABSTRACTION Winterowd Fine Art 701 Canyon fineartsantafe.com March 22–31 Reception March 22, 5–7 pm
After many years of painting watercolors, Charlie Burk switched to oil in 1999. Burk’s current paintings are much larger than is practical in watercolor, measuring as much as four or five feet in either direction. He continues to paint the landscape, although his current work shows a fascination with abstraction. Rather than paint huge, sweeping vistas, Burk’s gaze goes toward the earth and zeros in on the long and lush grasses that grow wild. He explores light and shadow, color, pattern, and form in the blades of grass, the angles they create, the spikelets that punctuate the blades, and the sunlight illuminating the shapes of the landscape behind the grass.—Lisa J. Van Sickle

COLOR SNAPS Globe Fine Art 727 Canyon globefineart.com March 22–April 22 Reception March 22, 4–6 pm
Ginnie Cappaert’s paintings are the end result of 30–40 layers of oil paint and other media, added, scraped away, dissolved into one another, and rebuilt. The finished paintings are landscapes, although they portray mood and atmosphere more than specific landforms. She uses texture and color to render a serene and unspoiled view of nature. The paintings in Color Snaps are small—as little as 6 x 6"—while Cappaert’s previous work was measured in feet rather than inches. She intends the small pieces to show the beauty and importance of fragments, not just the big view. Cappaert divides her time between Door County, Wisconsin, and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.—LVS Above: Ginnie Cappaert, Meandering, oil and cold wax on panel, 6 x 6" Left: Carlos Mérida, Two Men From Huixquilucan at the Fiesta of the Huehuenches, lithograph on paper, 18 x 13"
CARLOS MÉRIDA: CARNIVAL IN MEXICO Hecho a Mano 830 Canyon hechoamano.org March 29–April 27 Reception March 29, 6–8 pm
Canyon Road’s newest gallery opens with a show of early work by Carlos Mérida (1891–1984), a Guatemalan-born artist who lived and worked in Mexico. Mérida created the nine lithographs in the series in 1940. A set of illustrations of costumes worn during Carnival, the week of indulgence before the solemnity of Lent, the series combines Mérida’s modernist outlook with almost ethnographic subject matter. Hecho a Mano’s mission is to exhibit historic and contemporary jewelry, ceramics, and printmaking from Mexico, New Mexico, and the rest of the United States. Owner Frank Rose says, “I’m interested in the intertwined history of the United States and Mexico, the endless art versus craft debate, contemporary and traditional art. These players, usually opposed to one another, exist on a spectrum and they’re all important.”—LVS March 21, 2019 NOW 15
